Chapter 4
Maya led Sam down many corridors that would be hard to find for those who did not know the cave system. Above was a hole that led to their sleeping chamber. David told her he was keeping Sam in this room until he could trust him. Apparently, Paul and Marko had already took the time to decorate the room for Sam.
Maya opened the door motioning Sam to go in. When Sam walked in, he froze. All his stuff from grandpa's home was here in this new room except for the furniture. Sam looked back at Maya. She smiled and shrugged her shoulders. "Paul and Marko collected everything last night. They decorated it before Marko came to get you. They want you to feel welcomed here."
Sam nodded before sitting down on the bed. He kept glancing at her. He wanted to ask questions, but he didn't know if he wanted to know the answer.
Maya sighed. "Just ask your questions, Sam."
Sam raised his eyes to look at her. "Was any of it real?"
Maya wrapped her arms around her body. She did not feel cold but right now it was almost like she could feel it.
"At the beginning, no. I was only supposed to introduce myself and start convincing you to join us. It changed after the third time we were together. When we got stuck in the house of horror ride." Maya said.
FLASHBACK
Maya had her arms wrapped around Sam's chest giggling as she observed the ghost. "I can't believe they think this is scary."
Sam smiled and glanced at the machine. "Well at least they are trying. I don't really like horror, but they could have at least tried harder on the monsters."
Suddenly the cart shook and stopped.
"Attention riders. We have a maintenance issue. Please remain seated as we work on fixing the problem" A voice sounded from above their heads.
Maya, Sam, and the other riders winced as the light came on. The other riders started talking loudly either to complain about the issues or gossiping with each other.
Maya and Sam glanced around at the differences they could see now that the lights were on. It really was not as scary as it seemed. They spent the next 10 minutes joking about the machine monsters which turned into debating which movie monster could go against superheroes from Sam's comics.
Maya watched as Sam went on talking about the difference between Superman and Batman with a smile. She loved to see him go on the rants. It was almost like her big brothers when they went on rants about their interests.
Sam noticed Maya staring at him and blushed, looking away. "You must think this is stupid."
Maya cupped his face and turned it toward her. "No. I love it. I love that you are so passionate about this stuff. I think it's cute."
Sam's eyes widened. "You do?"
Maya smiled and nodded. "I do."
Sam and Maya slowly moved closer to each other. Sam's eyes drifted to Maya's lips. Just as they leaned toward each other the carts jerked hard.
"Attention Riders. We have repaired the damage and will continue the ride. Please remain seated. Discount tickets for a free ice cream will be given to each rider upon leaving. Thank you for your patients."
Maya and Sam laughed while blushing. Maya snuggled up to Sam's chest while Sam wrapped an arm around her. They each had the same thought: I almost kissed her/him. I wonder what it would have felt like.
END FLASHBACK
Maya walked over and sat down beside Sam. "I never lied to you Sam. Everything after that was real."
Sam stared into her eyes and could see the truth in her eyes. His mom always said the eyes were the window to the soul.
Sam glanced around the room before looking at her. "How did you come to be part of this group? You don't look or act like them."
Maya sighed and laid on her back with her head on the pillows. "It was an accident."
Sam frowned as he laid beside her. "How?"
"I was homeless. I remember some cops calling us street rats."
Maya stopped speaking as emotions bubbled up. A tear ran down her face as she tried to remember what her past was but not coming up with hardly anything. Sam watched the tear fall. He reached forward and ran his thumb along Maya's cheek wiping the tear away.
"So, what happened next?" He asked.
"I was a part of this group filled with about 8 kids. We were different ages, but we knew to survive we had to work together. There was this boy. I can't remember his name, but he somehow found the cave. At that time David kept his blood in a glass wine bottle. The boy found the bottle and Marko's jacket. He took both items when he left the cave. He hated me and I hated him. The funny thing is that I can't even remember why I hated him. I just know I did. Somehow, he realized that it was blood in the bottle and as a joke he convinced me to drink it."
Sam gasped. "You're kidding?!"
Maya shook her head "I kept drinking until this other kid stopped me. I passed out after that. When I woke up, I was completely messed up. Everything was spinning and I felt so sick. It was scary at the time. I thought for sure I was going to die. I walked this little girl to the police station because she wanted to go home but, on the way, back to the tire factory the hunger pains hit."
Maya sat up and moved away from Sam. She was not sure how he would take the news. "There was this guy walking down the alley where I was. He was a creep. He saw me and tried to feel me up. His neck was right by my mouth, and I just lost it. I bit him. By the time he realized what was happening it was too late. David and the other appeared. We went back to the factory and killed everyone there. We took back the blood and Marko's jacket before burning the building to the ground."
Sam sat up and pulled Maya to him. Sam didn't like that what happened to those humans but he couldn't find it in himself to blame her. Maya pulled away from Sam.
"David and the others are good to those part of the clan, Sam. They will look out for you and take care of you if you show that you will do the same for them. I know it's not ideal. The whole blood drinking thing but David is willing to work with you if you just feed. I don't feed on the innocent. I refuse too. David allows me to feed on the surf Nazis and other known bad guys. I can survive in this life and so can you."
Sam frowned "I don't know if I can Maya. You're still killing someone every night."
Maya frowned. "Sam I…"
"Time for bed children"
Both teens jumped and glanced toward the door where David stood.
Maya glanced between David and Sam. She didn't want to leave Sam.
"Maya" David gave her a look.
She slowly stood up and walked to the door. "Good Morning Sam. See you in the evening."
Maya disappeared out the door leaving Sam with David.
David walked into the room placing two bottles of water on the side table. "This is in case you get thirsty during the day. There's a bathroom through that door and, before you get any ideas, we already made sure there was nothing in there that could hurt us."
Sam frowned.
David sat down in the chair by the desk. "You will be expected to try and sleep during the day so that you can be with us at night. You will not go anywhere without one of us with you. That does not include Maya or Laddie. There are rules you will have to obey but we will get to those later."
Sam nodded his head. He was not sure about this at all.
David rose from the chair and walked toward the door "until you have earned my trust this door will be locked during the day. There's a flashlight and batteries in the side drawer for you to use to see with. Any questions?"
Sam shook his head.
David smiled "Good. Have a good sleep Sam. See you this evening."
David shut the door and locked it with a click.
The kid was taking this better than Michael had. Maybe the Lost Boys could shape him to be one of them.
David turned and disappeared into the dark. He deserved some peaceful rest after the last couple nights he had to deal with.
Sam sighed. He laid down on the bed and started thinking about his future. Bad thing in all this is he had to feed on people. Good part in all this is he would never die, and he would be with Maya. He would be able to read all the comics from long ago and what came from the future. He and Maya could be together. Sam rubbed his eyes as he started feeling more tired as time went on. As he fell asleep more and more ideas of all the fun things he could experience now that he was a vampire came into his mind. The blood was already working on his subconscious mind to accept his fate. Sam just didn't know it yet.
