"Don't forget me."

One-shot, inspired by the Adele song Someone like you. Set after 9x09. Jay/Hailey, past Jay/Ally, from Ally's POV.

I do not own the song, Chicago PD or any of the characters.

This is different from my story, but I was inspired by the song and I wanted to write it. I haven't written an Upstead one-shot for quite a while, so I'd love to hear your thoughts. I hope you enjoy it :)

Ally was surprised when she heard from her parents that Jay was married. They said that he and his girlfriend, now-wife, had eloped a couple of weeks ago and Jay had called them to share the happy news. Even though Ally hadn't seen Jay for close to 9 years, she still felt a sense of loss: Jay had been her first love. The last time she had seen her, he had wanted her to move back to Chicago, but she hadn't. Now Jay Halstead was married. In as casual way as possible, Ally asked her mum how long Jay and his now-wife had been together and Gail said just over a year, but they had already been partners for years before that and they had been living together for a couple of months. "She's really lovely, Ally, I know you'd like her. She's really good for Jay." Gail paused, before she suggested, "Honey, why don't you come home and have dinner with Jay and Hailey?" Hailey. That was her name.

Ally agreed, before she put her phone down. She smiled to herself, remembering Jay on the night of their prom. The way he had smiled at her, the way he had kissed her. Now Ally had to put those memories away, because Jay was married. She knew that she would always love Jay. There had always been a part of her which had, somehow, believed that they would end up together; that she would go back to Chicago and he would be there, waiting for her. It seemed so foolish now. That was her regret now : That she hadn't stayed when he had wanted her to, when he had asked her to.

In a slightly apprehensive manner, Ally made her way back to Chicago and she was glad that she was first to arrive at her parents' house and, as she entered, her eyes landed on the kitchen table and she remembered all of the times she and Jay had sat there, in their teenage years, and talked about their future. A future which had ended when Jay had enlisted. A future she had still wanted the two of them to have, but it would never be.

"Ally, dear. You're still so skinny!" It was her mum's usual greeting as she hugged her, but it made Ally smile. She was their only child since her brother's death. Jay had carried so much guilt over what had happened to her brother. Ally also knew that her parents appreciated all that Jay had done for their family during that time. It had been years since she and Jay had broken up, but he had been there. That was just who Jay Halstead was and that was one of the things Ally loved about him. Had loved. "I'm making pasta, your favourite!" Gail told her with a loving smile. Ally knew that her mum knew how she was feeling. Her mum always knew and she had always known about her love for Jay. Ally felt as if she were holding in a long breath.

For about an hour, Ally held that same breath, until she heard the front door opening and she heard her dad greeting Jay and his wife. Jay. The sound of his voice brought memories flooding back and she smiled to herself and braced herself, busying herself with laying the table for dinner.

Danny walked into the kitchen, followed by Jay and his wife and Ally looked up to see Jay. He looked so different from when she had last seen him. Ally couldn't describe it, but there was something different and it wasn't just how he looked. His wife, Hailey, was beautiful, with long, blonde curls and bright, blue eyes. As if no time had passed, Jay walked over to Ally and said, "Ally, its's so good to see you." He gave her a gentle hug, before he said, with a smile, "I hope Phoenix is treating you well."

Forcing a smile, Ally nodded. "It is, yeah, thanks." Her eyes fell on the black wedding ring on Jay's finger and she was saw an identical one on Hailey's finger.

Jay passed a bottle of wine to Gail before he ushered to Hailey, who was standing silently, but Ally knew that she was watching everything. "Ally, this is my wife, Hailey. Hailey, this is Ally."

Before Ally had a chance to say anything, Hailey walked over to her and shook her head, saying, in a sincere voice, "It's so nice to meet you, finally, Ally. Jay's told me so much about you, over the years." He had? Ally didn't believe that, but, when she looked into Hailey's eyes, she knew that it was true.

Jay seemed more grown up, which made sense. It had been almost 9 years since Ally had seen him, but he seemed steadier and more confident. More like the Jay she had known before he had gone to Afghanistan. He and Hailey were clearly very connected and Ally could see, in that evening, the love and support they gave to each other. As a way of dealing with her nerves, Ally asked, "When did you propose, Jay?"

Hailey blushed and bit her lip, before she replied, "Well, actually, I was the one to propose first and then Jay proposed afterwards."

Unable to help herself, Ally inquired, "Did he get down on one knee?"

With another blush, Hailey nodded and replied, shortly, "Yes, he did." Jay also cleared his throat and blushed. Hailey broke the silence, by saying, with a smile, "Ally, tell me all about Jay in high school."

For about an hour, Ally shared stories with Hailey and she was surprised how Jay wasn't embarrassed. He sat there and smiled and she saw how his eyes kept going to Hailey, watching her reaction to some of her stories. His eyes let up whenever he looked at Hailey.

At the end of the evening, Hailey offered to help Gail with the dishes whilst Ally went outside and Jay followed her, not saying anything, like so many times before, but this was different. Finally, Ally admitted, "I was surprised when Mum told me you were married, but I'm not surprised now, Jay. I can see how happy you and Hailey make each other and how much you love each other."

Jay just nodded and said, simply, "Yeah. Hailey's pretty great." There was a silence, then Jay told her, as if he was reading her mind, "You'll find someone, Ally. I know it."

In barley a whisper, Ally replied, "I know." I'll never find you again, will I? Ally wanted to tell him the truth, but she knew that she couldn't. Forcing a smile, she said, "I wish you and Hailey the best, Jay. I really do."

"That means a lot, Ally." Before Ally knew it, Jay pulled her into another hug and Ally closed her eyes and enjoyed the moment. Please don't forget me, she silently begged.

At the end of the evening, Ally watched Jay and Hailey as they walked away, with Jay's hand at the bottom of Hailey's back and, only when they were out of sight, did she allow her tears to fall. Her love with Jay hadn't lasted and now she had lost him forever. Sometimes, love didn't last and it hurt, but Ally was happy for him. Jay had found his person, the love of his life, even if, in her heart, Ally knew that Jay was hers and always would be. Even if she did find someone else, someone like Jay, he would never be him. He would never be Jay Halstead.
