Authors note: My ninth story ._.
I read through this 4 times so if there's any spelling mistakes then they'll most likely just be small ones. I have a bad habit of missing words/letters out when I'm writing but don't notice so sometimes there'll be missing words/letters but it's not suuupppeerr common. :)
I don't own The Harry Potter universe, Joanne Rowling does tho. Have a good day and a good time reading this! :)
Sirius sat on his bed in excitement. Today was his eleventh birthday which meant he was getting his Hogwarts letter. His parents said that he had to stay in his room until seven o'clock the night before, so, Sirius was sitting on his bed carefully watching his watch. As soon as it hit seven he jumped up and sprinted downstairs.
"Careful." His father was sitting at the kitchen table smiling at him. "Is it here!?" Sirius asked quickly and his father held up a letter. Sirius snatched it from his father and was about to rip it open when his mother snapped at him, "Don't open it now, stupid, you have to wait for your brother!" Sirius slumped down at the table grumbling something about how his brother always wakes up too late in the day.
"Can I go wake him up at least?" Sirius asked. "Fine." His mother snapped turning away. Sirius jumped up and ran back upstairs.
He swung open his brother's door and slowly crept right up to his brother. He then lowered himself so his mouth was right next Regulus's ear and screamed. His brother jumped up quickly and then slowly slid out of bed, "Blimey Sirius, do you have to do that every morning?" "Yes, I do, it's hilarious."
The two boys ran down stairs back to the table and sat down together.
"Sirius, how many times have I told you to not wake Regulus up by screaming in his ear?" His father said sternly. "Zero." Sirius said grinning. "True." His father said thoughtfully. "Open it already!" Regulus said quickly. Sirius tore open the letter read it through three times then handed it to his brother so he could see to. "I can't wait 'till I go." Regulus said enviously. "Well, you'll have to." Sirius smirked and handed the letter to his father. "I can't wait to go; I hope I'm in Slytherin." Sirius told his brother. "Well, you'll have to." Regulus grinned. "Oh, so funny." Sirius said sarcastically.
"Eat your breakfast then we'll go to Diagon Alley to collect your things." His father told him. "Is mother coming?" Sirius asked quietly, secretly hoping the answer was 'no' and to his delight; "No, I've got more important things to do then shopping." His mother snorted. Sirius gave his brother a secret grin from behind his hand and grabbed a plate of bacon and eggs. Regulus took another and then looked below the table, "You can have this, Kreacher." He handed the elf a piece of bacon and grinned at the excitement on the elf's face.
Sirius always hated Kreacher, he was creepy.
Sirius stood on platform nine and three quarters filled with excitement.
"You look like you're gonna implode." His brother whispered to him making Sirius laugh.
"Now remember, write once every week and don't interact with mudbloods or blood traitors." His mother said. "Yes, yes I know." Sirius waved off her comment. "I'm gonna be lonely all year." Regulus mumbled. "No, you won't, you'll have the evil creeping Kreacher." Sirius told him. "Don't be mean to him he hasn't done anything." Regulus frowned. "He existed." Sirius said before suddenly grabbing his trunk and running up to the train door. "Okay bye!" He jumped onto the train and waved quickly.
Sirius walked down the train trying to find a compartment.
"Hi there!" A boy with black hair and glasses walked up to him. "Hi, um, I don't have anywhere to sit, can we sit together?" Sirius asked. "I don't have a compartment either but if we can find one, then sure." The boy answered.
They walked down the train checking every compartment but didn't find an empty one. "Dammit." The black-haired boy muttered. Sirius walked to the last compartment and found it empty. "You didn't check this one." He told the boy. "Yes!" The boy jumped up and ran inside. "I found it first." Sirius grumbled, walking inside.
"So, what's your name?" Sirius asked. "James Potter, you?" "Sirius Black." He answered. James looked at him judgmentally and then leant back in the seat. "What?" Sirius asked. "Your family's one of the ones following you-know-who." James said carefully. "Well, I'm not my family." Sirius snapped at him. "Well then, what do you think of muggleborns?" James asked. "They're stealing our magic!" Sirius said quickly. "How exactly are they doing that?" James asked. "They just are." Sirius answered. "They can't control who their parents are or that they have magic." James said coolly. Sirius thought for a moment, they couldn't be stealing magic, like James had said; they can't control anything. "My whole life is a lie." Sirius muttered. James snorted, "None of that mudblood stuff is true." Sirius shrugged.
The compartment door opened. "Hi, can I please sit with you?" A brown-haired boy asked quietly. James nodded, "What's your name?" "Remus Lupin." He said quietly, shutting the door and sitting down next to Sirius. "This is Sirius and I'm James." James told Remus. "Can we be friends?" The boy asked shyly. "Sure!" Sirius grinned. "Really?" Remus looked amazed. "Of course!" James exclaimed. Remus looked like he was going to cry, "I've never had friends before." He said between sniffs. "What!?" James cried incredulously. "I haven't either." Sirius said only just realising. Sure, he'd had his brother and cousins but they were family not actual friends.
James stared at the two boys in horror. "I've just been at home most my life." Remus mumbled looking embarrassed. "What he said." Sirius grinned.
The compartment door opened and a short boy stood in the doorway, "Can I sit with you? Everywhere else is full." James nodded and the boy grinned, shut the door and sat down. "We should have some kind of club." James told them. "Yeah." Sirius said thoughtfully. "Like the 'Can I sit with you everywhere else is full club'." James said grinning. Sirius snorted, "Yeah because everyone here but you has asked that question."
Remus fiddled with the end of his shirt, "What's your name?" He asked the newest boy quietly. "Peter Pettigrew." The boy answered. "I'm Remus and that's Sirius and James." He said pointing. "I'm famous no need to introduce me to anyone." James said sitting up straight and flashing a grin. "Sure you are." Sirius smirked. James ran a hand through his hair. "Er, James you've messed up your hair." Remus pointed out. "Have I?" James asked looking in the mirror of the compartment door. "Oh, I like it like that." He smiled at his reflection and sat down again. "You look messy." Remus told him. "Thanks."
There was yet another knock at the compartment door and it opened. "Hello, come to join the 'Can I sit with you everywhere else is full club'?" James asked grinning. A girl with red hair and a boy with shoulder length black hair stood in the doorway. "No, I didn't even know that was a club." The girl said sounding confused. "Oh yes, it's a club where people come and sit with James and I." Sirius told her. The girl looked annoyed but the boy behind her smiled. "What's your names?" Remus asked. "Lily Evans and this is my best friend Severus Snape." She smiled back at Severus. "Snivellus?" James asked. "No, it's Severus." Lily answered. "Snivellus is a good nickname though." Sirius said thoughtfully. "Yes, that's what we'll call him." James added. "You two are very annoying." She said. "Thank you and goodbye." Sirius said shutting the compartment door.
"Hey! I wasn't finished talking." James complained. "You do enough talking." Sirius told him.
"So, anyone here have siblings?" James asked changing the topic. Everyone shook their heads except Sirius, "I have a younger brother." He told them. "What's he like?" James asked. "Good prank material." Sirius said simply. At this James grinned evilly. "His name's Regulus." Sirius continued, "And he's a year younger than me." "Perfect." James said.
"What's perfect?" Remus asked. "Next year we can cause mayhem either with or on him, depending on which he chooses." James answered. Sirius's eyes shone with excitement, "Do we have to wait till next year?" "Not unless you sneak back home and smuggle him in." James said thoughtfully. "You mean kidnap?" Remus asked with a small smile of amusement. "Technically it's not kidnapping since he's my brother." Sirius told him. James nodded quickly, "Yes, it couldn't be kidnapping as he's Sirius's brother." "How do you plan on getting back?" Peter asked. James shrugged, "It was just a suggestion."
"Let's go on the roof." Sirius suggested. "The what?" Remus asked incredulously. "The roof." James repeated climbing out the window. Sirius laughed at Remus and Peter's horrified faces and climbed out after him.
"It's – so – windy!" James yelled over the wind. "It's because we're on top of a speeding train!" Sirius shouted. "Huh!?" James screamed. Sirius shook his head and sat down clinging onto the rails on the roof. James copied him. "Why are we out here again?!" He called. "Huh!?" Sirius screamed over the wind. "Nevermind! Let's go back inside!" James suggested. Both boys quickly slid back inside. Sirius slammed the window shut panting for air.
Remus laughed at him and leant back in the seat.
"Let's not do that again." James said sitting down.
"What d'you wanna do?" Peter asked. "Exploding Snap?" Sirius suggested. "Sure."
The four boys spent the next hour playing Exploding Snap.
"We'll be there soon; we should get changed." Peter told them. "We've hardly been on the train at all we can't already be nearly there." James said incredulously. "That's what the driver said over the speakers." Remus added. "Well let's change into our robes then." Sirius mumbled. "I'll go change in the bathroom." Remus said pulling his robes out of his trunk. James shrugged and grabbed out his own. Remus left shutting the door behind himself.
Sirius pulled on his robes and sat back down looking out the window.
He spaced out thinking about the sorting when he suddenly heard someone laughing. He looked around the compartment to see Peter sniggering. "What?" Sirius asked. Peter pointed at James still laughing. James was still not dressed completely and was struggling to unbutton his shirt so he could put it on. The door opened and Remus entered. He quickly shut the door when seeing James shirtless and sat down next to Sirius with a grin. "It's not funny." James snapped. "Never said it was." Sirius said smiling. James gave up and threw his shirt on the ground angrily. Remus snorted and picked the shirt up. He started to unbutton it, humming an unfamiliar tune. He finished and handed it back to James.
James put it on and started to button it back up. He fiddled with the top button for a while before giving up again. "Oh, merlins beard, James." Sirius stood up and started buttoning up his friend's shirt. James didn't seem at all uncomfortable he just sunk into the seat muttering about how 'he was doing just fine'.
The compartment door opened making both Sirius and James jump. Lily stood in the doorway watching in amusement at seeing James's half buttoned up shirt and Sirius sitting cross legged next to him. Sirius huffed and continued with James's shirt. Lily smirked and said, "Came to tell you that you should probably get changed but seems like you got that covered." James scowled at her and Peter slammed the door in her face. Remus shook his head, sighed and pulled out a book to read.
Sirius finished James's last button and went back to his preferred seat near the window. James pulled out his tie and looked at it in disgust. He put it around his neck and tied it into a knot. "Oh, not again." Sirius muttered. James undid his knot and looked at his tie in a judgmental way before flinging it around his shoulders.
"You're meant to look your best for the sorting." Remus said looking over his book. "I am looking my best." James said defensively ruffling up his hair again. Remus snorted and went back to his book.
James slung his robes over his left shoulder and began twisting his hair around his pointer finger absentmindedly.
Sirius looked over at Peter who was still laughing, "Why you still laughing?" "Why are you still laughing." Remus corrected him. "Oh whatever." Sirius muttered. Peter pointed at James, who's hair was now in curls. "James stop fiddling with your hair." Sirius told him. James jumped and looked over at himself in the mirror. "Oh, I liked it messy, not curly." He said sadly. He ran a hand through his hair to get rid of the curls but they didn't go away. He then tugged on his hair angrily only to screeched in pain.
The compartment door opened, "Is there a bird in here?" A blond-haired boy asked. Sirius snorted, "No, it's just James." The boy looked over to James who was now lying on the floor clutching his hair and whimpering. "Weird." The boy shut the door and left.
They felt the train slow down and were already off the train when they all realised that James wasn't with them. "He's probably ahead of us." Peter told them. "How naive are you?" Sirius muttered forcing his way through the crowd like a fish trying to swim upstream. He shoved past a few people before yelling at everyone, "Get out my way you idiots!" The whole school stopped suddenly and just stared at him. He had a bad feeling about wherever James was. No one moved they just gaped. "Merlins beard! Did no one hear me!?" He screamed. A few people moved out his way giving him a path back onto the train. He walked quickly onto the train searching for James.
The few people left on the train watched him with interest.
Sirius walked quickly to the compartment they had been in and opened the door. He looked down to see James on the floor. "What the bloody hell happened here!?" He exclaimed. James didn't answer he just grunted and closed his eyes again. "Mate, you need to stand up if you don't want to go back to London." Sirius told him. James grunted again. "James." Sirius said exasperatedly. James pushed himself up and grabbed onto Sirius's arm. He moved his arm up until it was on Sirius's shoulder and then slowly walked down the train with Sirius muttering about how it was too early in the year for something like this to happen.
They got off the train, took a few steps and then James fainted.
A crowd formed around James and Sirius, everyone wanted to know what was happening. "Just great, great timing dude." Sirius grumbled kneeling down next to his friend.
"Firs' years over here!" Someone shouted but not a single first year listened, they just all hovered in the crowd watching.
Sirius studied James's face, his eyes had rolled to the back of his head and blood was trickling out of his mouth.
"What's goin' on here?" A tall man pushed his way through the crowd but stopped when he saw James and Sirius.
Sirius poked James in the side but he didn't move.
"Everyone get to the school!" The man shouted. All the students shuffled away to the school except the other first years.
"What happened?" Remus said walking up to Sirius. He shrugged and looked around desperately for a teacher.
"No one go anywhere, I'm going to get a teacher." The man said walking off up a hill. Sirius looked down at James.
James jolted upright and looked around quickly. "Hi." Sirius grimaced. James turned to Sirius and spat out a mouthful of blood all over his robes. "So, you gonna tell us what happened?" Sirius asked. "Avery." James shuddered and wiped his mouth covering his sleeve in blood. "Bloody hell." Sirius muttered. "Bloody, hah." James grinned. "Oh, stop it. You just fainted and the first thing you do is make a bad joke." Sirius looked at him raising an eyebrow.
"Out of my way!" Both boys turned back to see an old lady walking through the small crowd. She looked down at James. "You're going to be one of those students, aren't you?" She raised an eyebrow at him. "How could you tell?" James grinned at her. She sighed and shook her head, "Hagrid, take the first years, I'll bring him up to the castle." "Can I come?" Sirius asked excitedly. "Fine."
Sirius wrapped an arm around James and both boys stood up.
The other first years followed Hagrid while James and Sirius trailed after the lady.
"Hurry up." She told them. "James just fainted I don't think he can walk that fast." Sirius grumbled. She ignored him, "My name is Professor McGonagall, you are?" Sirius stumbled, tripped and fell to the ground pulling James down with him. "Sirius Black." He muttered pulling both himself and James back to their feet. "James Potter." James grinned at Sirius's annoyed face.
They continued walking in silence until they reached the top of the giant hill, though a better word in Sirius's opinion would be mountain.
They walked up to the giant entrance doors but didn't enter. Professor McGonagall raised her wand and pointed it at James face. James didn't seem to care, he just stood there waiting for her to cast a spell. She flicked her wand and the blood instantly disappeared. James sighed, "It's not sore anymore." "Good." Professor McGonagall then knocked sharply on the front doors and they swung open.
Sirius and James practically skipped after the Professor in excitement. "The other first years are already in the Great Hall. Follow me."
They followed her inside another pair of giant doors and immediately everyone's eyes turned towards them. Neither boy seemed to mind and just stood there looking around at the four different tables. "Stand over there with the other first years." She told them and then she walked past the crowd of first years and stood up on some sort of podium.
Both boys joined Remus and Peter quickly and started a whispered conversation. "Do you know how we get sorted?" James asked quickly. "We put on the hat and it chooses what house we get in." Remus said pointing to an old, patched hat. "I don't know what house I wanna be in anymore." Sirius muttered quietly. "Be in Gryffindor with me." James whispered. "How do you know you'll be in Gryffindor?" Sirius asked. "All my family have been." James said proudly.
"Where's Peter?" Sirius asked looking around. "I'm right here." Said an annoyed looking Peter. Sirius looked down, "Oh sorry, didn't notice you." Peter scowled, "Thanks." He said sarcastically.
"When I call your name, you will sit on the stool and put on the hat." Professor McGonagall called out.
She called out a few names and then she said, "Black, Sirius!"
Sirius jumped and then slowly made his way to the stool. He sat down quickly and jammed the hat on his head.
"Ah, a Black." A small voice in his ear said making him jump. 'What house am I?' Sirius thought. "Exactly." The small voice said. 'What?' Sirius thought, confused. "You're brave, thoughtful, courageous." 'I should think so.' Sirius thought, now a little annoyed.
"GRYFFINDOR!" The hat shouted.
Sirius ripped the hat off his head and scrambled off the stool and over to the Gryffindor table.
People stared at him;
"A Black in Gryffindor?" "There's never been a Black in Gryffindor before." People all over the hall whispered in shock.
Sirius tried to shrink away but that was near impossible when the people next to you were staring as well, so he just sat in silence watching other people being sorted.
"Evans, Lily!"
Lily rushed up to the stool and carefully place the hat on her head, "GRYFFINDOR!" More and more people got sorted until it was Remus's turn.
"Lupin, Remus!"
Sirius looked up quickly to watch his friend being sorted. Remus walked slowly to the stool and then put it quickly on his head, within seconds the hat shouted, "GRYFFINDOR!"
Remus grinned, passed the hat back to Professor McGonagall and then ran to sit next to Sirius. "Hey." Sirius grinned. "Hi! I got into Gryffindor can you believe it? I'm not even brave and I got in!" Remus said quickly. "You never know, you could defeat you-know-who one day." Sirius grinned. Remus snorted, "I very much doubt that." "You never know, you never know" Sirius said in a mysterious tone.
"Look Peter's getting sorted." Remus pointed over to the small boy who was running quickly up to the stool.
"GRYFFINDOR!" Peter squealed making Sirius burst out laughing and then he rushed to sit at the table. "He's not much of a Gryffindor." Sirius muttered to Remus. "Don't be rude." Remus snapped.
"Potter, James!" Professor McGonagall called.
"Look it's James." Sirius said quickly. All three boys looked up to see James practically sprinting up to the stool. He shoved the hat on his own head and sat on the stool for about five seconds before the hat shouted;
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Yes!" James pumped his fist into the air and threw the hat at Professor McGonagall. He then ran over to sit next to Sirius. "Hey." Sirius smirked at James's excited face. "I'm a Gryffindor!" James said happily. "Just like the rest of us." Sirius grinned.
