Chapter 2 The Emergency Room

(When they get there, Skye is out there waiting on them)

(Ryder gets off his four-wheeler and goes to talk to Skye)

Skye: Took you long enough.

Ryder: How's Marshall doing?

Skye: I don't know, I haven't gotten to see him since they took him from the helicopter.

Skye: All that I heard them say was something about surgery.

Ryder: That probably means that they are preforming surgery on his leg.

Ryder: Why are you waiting out here?

Skye: One, because they don't allow unsupervised dogs in the building and two, because someone in the waiting room was "allergic" to dogs.

Ryder: That's fine. Here, we'll go check in.

(Everyone heads in behind Ryder)

(Ryder walks up to the check-in)

Ryder: Hi, is it possible to go see someone?

Worker: Sure, who is it that you want to see?

Ryder: Marshall. A small Dalmatian pup.

Worker: (repeating it to herself as she types it into the computer) Marshall…

Worker: Yup, he is in room 143.

Ryder: Okay thank you!

(Entering the room)

Ryder: Hey Marshall, how are yo… oh, he's asleep.

(Doctor knocks on door)

Doctor: Hello, my name is Doctor Stephenson, I am taking care of Marshall at the moment.

Ryder: Okay great. Um… how long is he going to be asleep?

Doctor Stephenson: He shouldn't be asleep for too much longer. The anesthesia should wear off soon.

Ryder: Okay so what injuries did Marshall sustain from this incident?

Doctor Stephenson: He had sustained a few minor injuries here and there but there is one major injury that we are paying close attention to.

Ryder: What is it?

Doctor Stephenson: He has broken a patella bone in his knee. We had to put him under almost as soon as we got him but he should make a full recovery.

Ryder: Is there anything that we have to do afterwards?

Doctor Stephenson: We will have to do rehab for a while and will probably have knee pains when he does anything using his knee.

Ryder: What do we do when he has these pains?

Doctor Stephenson: You can give him Tylenol but he will also be wearing a knee brace for a few weeks that should help with the pain.

Ryder: Okay, how long will he be in the hospital.

Doctor Stephenson: It will be anywhere from 1-3 weeks. He needs time to heal and allow the stitches to dissolve. He won't be able to walk for a while.

Ryder: What will be the deciding factor?

Doctor Stephenson: If you think he will be okay with having to stay still for a while so we will have to take a few measures in order to keep him immobile.

(Marshall starts waking up)

Chase: He's waking up!

Marshall: Where am I?

Chase: You don't remember?

Marshall: I remember chasing a volleyball one minute and then the next I was flying on a wet stretcher in a lot of pain.

Doctor Stephenson: He may be a bit out of it right now but he will remember soon enough. You may just have to fill him in for now.

Ryder: Okay sounds good but, what kind of "measures" are we talking about?

Doctor Stephenson: Well, he is not allowed to use the leg so that means he cannot use the leg to walk or use the bathroom.

Ryder: So what is he supposed to do about that?

Doctor Stephenson: We will have him in a wheelchair and have to be put in diapers.

Marshall: DIAPERS?!

(All the other pups try to hold in their laughs)

Doctor Stephenson: Yes, because in order to use the bathroom you must use your leg. Am I correct? Or are you now a female?

Marshall: No, I use my leg to use the bathroom.

Everest: Even if he was a female, he would still have to use his leg to use the bathroom.

Doctor Stephenson: I guess you're right.

Marshall: But is it really necessary? Can I not just have Ryder hold me?

Ryder: I don't want to have to hold you to use the bathroom. Besides, I wouldn't be able to hold you without hurting you.

Marshall: Fine but I'm going to need one kinda soon…

Doctor Stephenson: Alright. I'll get a nurse to help you out. If you have any other questions feel free to ask anyone for me and I will be there as soon as possible.

Ryder: Alright, thank you.

Doctor Stephenson: No problem.

(Doctor Stephenson leaves)

(Pups talking to Marshall)

Rocky: You were chasing after the volleyball and didn't see the cliff and… you… fell.

Marshall: Into water?

Rocky: We wish

Marshall: Then why was the stretcher all wet?

Skye: I don't think you want to know.

(Marshall starts blushing)

Rubble: What was it?

Rocky: Was it oil from the helicopter because I can fix that if it was a leak.

(Chase realizes)

Chase: It was a leak alright.

Marshall: (Blushes more) CHASE!

Chase: What? I didn't tell them

(Everest realizes)

Everest: Ohhhhhhh

Rubble: Tell me!

Marshall: Everest…

(Everest tells Rubble)

Rubble: You peed yourself?!

(Everyone tries not to laugh but can't)

(Marshall turns as red as his uniform)

Chase: He may need the diapers after all!

(Everyone continues to laugh)

Skye: It's okay Marshall. Chase peed himself when I almost crashed the other day.

Chase: SKYE! You said you wouldn't tell anyone!

Skye: This is your fault.

Chase: I didn't say anything!

Skye: Yes you did. You know he doesn't like flying!

Chase: Yeah but… but… (sigh) I deserved that… But you were in danger!

Skye: Marshall was in danger too.

Chase: Fair enough. Just glad I don't have to wear diapers for a month.

Skye: CHASE!

Marshall: A MONTH?!

Skye: Chase… we were trying not to tell him…!

Everest: It's okay Marshall it will be over before you know it.

Marshall: Easy for you to say.
