Chapter 14 Jay: Faith in friends
Jay's point of view
Much like my friends Tony and Bruce, I had been raised in a very strict Christian home. For as long as I could remember, my sister and brother and I went to a homeschooling co-op taught by Tony's parents. That's how we became friends. When I was 11 years old, I got really, really sick with pneumonia and a nasty sinus infection and I was stuck at home alone in bed… it was Sunday and my parents and siblings had gone to church… they never returned.
Mrs Stark called me and said she and Mr Stark would be visiting me.
I had a shower, washed my hair and got dressed for the first time in four weeks, I fixed some quesadillas and tea for the visit.
"How are you feeling, Jay?"
"A bit better than I was… I had a hot shower and washed my hair, and I actually feel OK just now."
"Jay, I'm afraid we have some bad news"
"Go on?"
"There was a bad fire at church"
"Oh…"
"No one made it out"
"Oh…"
"When you and Tony first became friends when you were 4 years old – in preschool – your parents added an addendum to their will… that if anything should happen to them, we should adopt you"
"Thank you… I appreciate that more than I can say."
Per my parents' will, the house and most of their belongings were sold at auction, the money went into trust for me. I went to Hogwarts when I was 12 and from there I went to MIT and then into the Air Force…
