Chapter 13
I am the lost prince!
(Author's Note)
Varian's getting ready to find out he's the lost prince that was taken away from the castle 18 years ago!
Father Cap is going to be annnnngry. (And so is Varian because he was kept this all his life.)
And poor Cassandra in this chapter.
But thankfully, we know that the thugs (that have a dream!) are going to protect her.
Also, please note that it gets extremely dark at this point.
Yes, it is still the plot of the Tangled movie, nothing's been changed, but it's still dark.
I want to make sure. There is a lot of dark/morbid scenes in this chapter and in these scenes of the Movie.
Enjoy!

Meanwhile at the dungeons, Cassandra was being taken to the place where she'd paid for her crimes. She stayed quiet, trying to figure out how the people knew about Varian and his hair.
She glanced and saw Angry and Red in one of the cells and she glared.
She rushed into the guard on her right with her shoulder and then headbutted the other guard on the left, then she jumped over them and grabbed onto the bars of the cell.
"How did you know about her?! Tell me, now!" She screamed at the two, grabbing a hold of Angry's shirt. Angry looked surprised, "It wasn't us! It was the old man!" She gasped.
"Old man?" Cassandra raised a brow.
Captain Gothel and another guard grabbed Cassandra by her shoulder and pulled her away from the cell. "Wait, no, wait! You don't understand, she's in trouble. Please! Wait!" She pleaded.
Father Cap had heard the tables fall and wandered to the room Varian was in. "Varian?"
"Varian, what's going in there? Are you all right?" He asked.
Varian came out of the room, which made Cap stumble back. "I'm the lost prince." Varian mumbled. Father Cap sighed, "Please, speak up, Varian. You know how I hate the mumbling."
Varian raised his voice, "I am the lost prince! Aren't I?"
Cap stared blankly.
"Did I mumble this time, Father?" Varian raised a brow, then glared even harder; "Or should I even call you that?" There was extreme, silence. "Varian, do you even hear yourself? Why would you ask such a ridiculous question?" Father Cap laughed it off, pretending that Varian was just going delusional.
Varian roughly shoved him back, "It was you! It was all you!"
Cap looked shocked, before he sort of glared.
"Everything I did, was to protect you." He assured, until Varian pushed him out of the way and walked off. "Varian!" Father Cap looked very offended and turned around to face Varian.
Varian rambled, "I spent my entire life! Hiding from people who would use me for my power!"
"Varian!"
"I should have been hiding...from YOU!" He pointed at Father Cap.
Cap wasn't pleased, "Where will you go? She won't be there for you."
Varian growled, "What did you do to her?!"
Father Cap raised a brow. "That criminal is to be hanged for her crimes."
Varian stumbled backwards and gasped, "No!"
Cap walked to Varian and comforted him. "Now, now. It's alright. Listen to me."
"All of this is as it should be." Cap went to pat him on the head, until Varian grabbed his wrist.
"No! You were wrong about the world! And you were wrong about me! And I will never let you use my hair again!" Varian screamed at her.
Father Cap managed to get his wrist out from Varian's grasp, causing him to hit the mirror and it shattered across the floor. He stared shocked at Varian, who stormed away angrily.
"You want me to be the bad guy?"
"Fine." Cap spat.
"Now I'm the bad guy."
Meanwhile, back at the dungeon...
Cassandra forcefully tried to get out of the Royal Guards' grasps, but couldn't. She glared at the floor, then glanced up a little ways at the wall... To see a ceramic unicorn? Why was that there?
Suddenly, once Gothel had gotten herself to the door, it closed. And the other ones did too.
"What's this?!" She raised her brow, then faced the door she was going to go out of and slammed on it. "Open up!" She shouted. Only to be met with Shorty through the peephole.
"What's the password?" He asked, drunk.
Captain Gothel paused, "What?"
"Nope." Shorty closed the peephole.
"Open this door!" Captain Gothel hissed.
Shorty reopened the peephole, "Not even close." He chuckled and closed it again.
Captain Gothel snarled, "You have three seconds. One...Two...Three..."
TWONG!
Attila had opened the door when Captain Gothel turned around (to see what happened to her guards, who had been a little too quiet and aparentally went missing) and had hit her with a frying-pan. Cassandra laughed, "Frying pans. Who knew, right?" She looked at him.
Suddenly, the other door busted open and a bunch of guards came charging into the hallway as Attila undid Cassandra's handcuffs. They quickly ran off together, heading outside.
The guards were stopped by Ulf, one of the thugs who was a mime.
Ulf mimed and pretended that there was a wall in the way, then slowly looked to the other hallway and suddenly, Vladimir ran into the guards, which made the guards scream and then fall over like bowling pins upon Vladimir's impact.
Ulf put his hands on his cheeks like he was surprised.
Once Cassandra, Attila and now Hook Hand, got outside, they saw a bunch of the Royal Guards practically pouring down the staircase. Hook Hand grabbed Cassandra and put her on a wheelbarrow. "Head down." Hook Hand said.
"Head down" Cassandra repeated.
"Arms in."
"Arms in."
"Knees apart."
"Knees apart"
She stopped.
"Knees apart?" She asked confusedly, "Why do I need to keep my-"
Suddenly, Vladimir jumped on the other side of the wheelbarrow and sent Cassandra into the air, needless to say she screamed. Then, in the same posistion as Hook Hand told her to be in, she landed on the back of Fidella. "Fidella! You brought them here?" She asked surprised.
Fidella nodded.
"Thank you. No really, thank you. Uh, I feel maybe this whole time we've just been misunderstanding one another. And we really just-" Cassandra was stopped by a look given by Fidella. "Yeah you're right, we should go." She shook her head.
The guards came out of one of the doors, holding crossbows and shooting arrows at Cassandra. Fidella and Cassandra quickly ran. Once getting intercepted by guards on the other side, Fidella, she kept running. "Fidella..." Cassandra said. "Fidella?!" Cassandra panicked.
Fidella jumped off of the wall, "FIDELLAAAAAAAAA!" Cassandra screamed.
Fidella landed on a red roof, sliding down it and causing the shingles to fall off quickly, then landed on the streets and kept running.
"Okay Fidella... Let's see how fast you can run." Cassandra said determinedly.
Fidella picked up speed and Cassandra ran through the town square, down the bridge, into the woods and to the tower where Varian stayed.
Once arriving, she got off of Fidella and looked up to the window.
"Varian?!" She called.
"Varian, let down your hair!" She repeated.
She heard no response, so she tried her best to climb the tower without any arrows, but the window opened and suddenly, Varian's long hair whipped out of the window and landed on the ground. Cassandra quickly grabbed a hold of it and climbed it.
She climbed through the window and smiled brightly, "Varian! Varian, I thought I'd never see you again-" Then she stared afraid when she saw Varian bound by his wrists, gagged.
Varian struggled and tried to tell Cassandra to leave, but he was not understood.
Abruptly... Cassandra gasped sharply...
She had been stabbed in the chest.
Cassandra fell to the floor, grasping at her wound. Father Cap holding the knife.
"Hhmm! (Cassie!)" Varian cried, but his voice was still not understood through the white cloth around his mouth. "Now look what you've done, Varian." Father Cap clicked his tongue, looking at Varian, who was starting to cry, tears rolling down his eyes quickly.
Cap said calmly, "Oh don't worry, sonny. Our secret will die with her. And as for us? We are going where no one will ever find you, again." Father Cap grabbed Varian's chains and tried to pull him away, but Varian tried and tried to get to Cassandra, no matter how much the chains rubbed his wrists and how his back ached from having his hands behind his back, and how hard it was to scream through the gag. "Varian, really?! Enough already! Stop fighting me!" Father Cap hissed.
Ruddiger tried to bite Cap, but Father Cap kicked him across the room.
Varian struggled enough that the gag slipped off of his mouth, "No! I won't stop. For every minute of the rest of my life I will fight! I will never stop trying to get away from you!" He screamed at him; then he tried to calm his breathing and he spoke.
"But, if you let me save her... I will go with you." He said through his teeth.
Cassandra painfully winced, loudly, and her voice cracked; "No... No, Varian..." She begged him not to do this. "I'll never run, I'll never try to escape. Just let me heal her. And you and I will be together. Forever, just like you want. Everything will be the way it was. I promise. Just like you want. Just let me heal her." Varian told Father Cap...
Ruddiger looked sadly at the two, then at Cassandra, and back at the two again.
Father Cap put the chains that was originally on Varian's wrists, onto Cassandra's one wrist. "In case you get any ideas about following us." He forcefully tugged on Cassandra's arm and then let it go, Cassandra letting out a painful wince from her pain.
Varian ran quickly to Cassandra, kneeling down before he had even reached her, causing him to slide across the floor. He put his hands on Cassandra's face, cupping her face.
"Cassie! Oh, I'm so sorry. Everything is going to be okay, though." Varian apologized, comforted and assured her, panicking too. Varian looked at where Cassandra was holding, gently moved her hand and opened up her vest to see blood, a lot of it.
Varian felt very light-headed, and he thought he was about to pass out at some point. He closed the vest back up and looked at Cassandra, "Everything... is going to be okay..." He repeated.
Cassandra gritted her teeth, "No, Varian!"
"I promise, you have to trust me." Varian added, putting his hair on her wound.
Cassandra winced, "No...I can't let you do this."
Varian's voice cracked too, "And I can't let you die." He whimpered.
"But if you do this..." Cassandra tried to speak through a devastatingly big amount of pain.
"Shhhhh." Varian calmed her down. Cassandra kept trying to speak, "Then you...will die."
Varian put his hand back on Cassandra's cheek, "Hey. Hey. It's gonna be alright..."
"Varian, wait..." She whimpered. She was going to let Varian heal her, but then she remembered that she would have to face death either way. By the guards, or by this wound.
"Cassie, what?" Varian said.
Cassandra pulled Varian closer to her and using the last bit of strength she had to grab a mirror shard that came from the mirror that Father Cap had broken earlier...
And cut Varian's hair.
Quickly, Varian's blonde hair flooded with brown as the power vanished from it. "No!" Varian cried out. Father Cap began to age rapidly as the power was lost. He screamed, "NOOO! No...NO! What have you done?! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!" He turned to the mirror and saw his reflection, he was a grey-haired, old man again. "No, no, no, NOOO!"
Ruddiger dragged Varian's cut hair into path of Father Cap, causing Cap to trip and fall out of the window. Varian tried to reach out for him, but failed to catch her and Cap's body turned to dust and the cloak fell to the ground outside the tower.
Varian slowly looked over at Cassandra, who was dying.
"No, no, no, no, Cassie..." He cried, kneeling back down to her and holding her face.
Cassandra only coughed in a response, her head falling back slightly.
Varian panicked, "Oh, look at me, look at me, I'm right here!"
"Don't go, stay with me, Cassie..." He sobbed.
Varian tried to sing the healing incantation, even with his brown hair.
"Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine."
"Make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine..."
Cassandra weakly spoke, "Varian..."
Varian whispered, "...what?" Tears rolled down his face.
Cassandra weakly smiled, "you were my new dream..."
Varian sniffled, "and you were mine."
Then Cassandra succumbed to the injury given to her by Father Cap, closing her eyes and her head falling back down like a ragdoll. Varian panicked and sobbed, so he tried singing it again.
"Heal what has been hurt, change the fate's design."
"Save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine..."
He couldn't, his voice cracked too badly. He couldn't keep singing... But, he tried, he tried, he tried and tried and tried and tried! He had to, He had to!
"What once was mine..."
And Varian put his head down on Cassandra and cried even more and even quicker.
One of Varian's tears fell on Cassandra's cheek, rolling down her cheek slightly, and then suddenly, a Coronian, sun-shaped glow shines on her cheek and gold and white light in shape of the Sundrop flower began to flood out of Cassandra's wound and dance around the tower, and it begins to heal Cassandra's wound. Varian looked up and saw this, his eyes lit up with surprise (and the reflection of the light in his eyes) as he watched it.
The light slowly faded into Cassandra's wound, and it was no longer there.
"Varian?" Cassandra spoke after a while.
"Cassie." Varian quickly looked at Cassandra.
Cassandra slowly smiled, "Did I ever tell you, I've got a thing for brunettes?"
Varian suddenly hugged her, causing Cassandra (and him both) to roll over and shouted, "Cassie!"
Cassandra hugged him and slowly sat up, still holding Varian to her.
Varian jerked back from Cassandra, wide, happy eyes and smiled brightly at her. He let out a beauitful laugh and then pulled Cassandra's vest collar and proceeded to kiss her deeply.
Cassandra was alarmed at first, but slowly nodded her head to get a better kiss...
At the castle, a guard busted through the doors of the castles' throne room, telling King Quirin and Queen Ulla that the lost prince had returned. The two ran down the hallway and opened the door to the balcony and there he was... Varian, along with Cassandra.
Ulla slowly approached Varian and Varian slowly approached Ulla.
She looked in Varian's eyes, and he had the exact same eyes...
Ulla smiled, though she was at the edge of happy tears.
And Varian, did the exact thing.
Ulla and Varian then hugged each other, and Quirin slowly walked over and joined the hug as well. They all knelt down to the ground and kept hugging. Cassandra watched, thankful that Varian had been reunited with his parents. Ulla looked up at her, and gently held her hand out.
Cassandra raised a brow and gently grabbed her hand, and then Ulla pulled her into the hug and they all began hugging eachother in a big, hug pile, on the castle balcony's floor.
Cassandra's POV
Well, you could imagine what happened next. The kingdom rejoiced.
The lost Prince had returned. The party lasted an entire week.
And, honestly I don't remember much of it.
Dreams came true all over the place.
Hook Handwent on to become the most famous concert pianist in the world. And Big Nose? Well he eventually found some to love. As for Ulf, well, I assume he's happy. He's never told me otherwise. Thanks to Fidella, crime in the kingdom disappeared almost over night. As did most of the apples. Ruddiger, never changed. At last Varian was home, and he finally had a real family.
He was a Prince worth waiting for. But above all, he led his kingdom with all the grace and wisdom that his parents did before his. And as for me, well. I started going by Cassandra again. Stopped thieving, basically turned it all around.
Varian's POV
But I know what the big question is; did Cassie and I ever get married?
Well I'm pleased to tell you.
After years, and years of asking, and asking, and asking. I finally said yes.
"Varian." Cassandra spoke.
Alright... I asked her.
"And we're living happily ever after." Cassandra smiled.
(Author's Note)
And that's all! I can't believe I made this in a day and a half! It took so long, even with having the transcript and lyrics to go by!
I want to say a couple things before I end this fanfiction though~
I was inspired by pictures of Varian as Rapunzel, Rapunzel as Varian, etc.
I really wanted to make this, and one night, I was having the hardest time motivating myself to write anything and I ended up deciding to do this TangledSwap, roleswap AU project, because I was able to used the transcript and lyrics as a guide.
I really, really hoped that you, the reader, enjoyed this Roleswap take on the Tangled movie using characters from Tangled: The Series and I'm really thankful to have finished this project. (But now I'm tired, lol...)
Thank you!
Have a good day/night!
Unless you don't want to, then, uh. Don't, I guess. :)
