"Hey, how are you feeling?" 47-year-old Jesse St. James asked his 45-year-old wife Rachel, as he entered the house with their younger daughter, 4-year-old Clementine. The couple's older daughter, 18-year-old Olive, was still at school.

"Hi Mommy! I painted a snowflake for you!" Clementine handed Rachel the art project.

"Aw, thanks Clemmy. And I'm feeling better - much better now that I have this beautiful snowflake to put up on the fridge," Rachel smiled at her daughter and husband.

"Good!" Clementine said. "I'm gonna go play!" She said, racing out of the room.

"Go to the bathroom first, please!" Jesse said, laughing.

"Okay!" Clementine called back.

Jesse sat down next to Rachel.

"Any new symptoms?"

"No - my fever broke, though," Rachel said absentmindedly.

"Well, that's good," Jesse smiled. "Did you think about what I said - about going to the doctor and getting a flu test just to be sure?"

Rachel sighed.

"I'm starting think I need to take a different test," she said looking down at the floor.

Jesse paused. "What?"

"Well, I thought the fever indicated I was just sick," Rachel said. "But I Googled it and it can be a sign of…other things. And on top of that…I'm two days late."

"Oh God," Jesse said, putting his head in his hands.

Jesse and Rachel had known for years they wanted to have two children together. They had started trying for baby #2 when Olive was two but hadn't been successful. Two years later, they both had gotten fertility tests done and the results were normal. They had continued to try for a second baby for years and while they always remained hopeful, it had gotten very disheartening. So imagine their surprise (and Olive's) when they made the big announcement shortly after she turned 13.

In addition to Olive and Clementine, Rachel had also been an egg donor and surrogate for her friends Kurt and Blaine, and had their daughter Maya 11 months before Olive was born. While Olive and Maya hadn't always gotten along, and Olive had initially had a hard time accepting Rachel's being pregnant again, these days, Maya, Olive, and Clementine were all very close and Rachel considered them all her girls.

But three pregnancies and childbirths were enough for her - and she and Jesse were perfectly happy with their family of four. The thought of having a college freshman, a kindergartner, and a newborn was terrifying.

"I think you should just bite the bullet and take the test," Jesse said. "Do you have any left over?"

Rachel shook her head.

"I used them all up with Maya, Olive, our numerous attempts at getting Clementine, and then finally Clementine," she replied.

"Okay," Jesse said slowly. "I can pick one up after rehearsal tomorrow and you can take it when I get home. Then we'll know and we can go from there."

Rachel nodded. She knew that if she spoke she'd burst into tears.

"We're gonna get through this," Jesse squeezed her hand.

After school that evening, Olive had gone to a sleepover at her friend Sara's house, but returned home the next morning.

"Hey Clem de la Clem!" Olive greeted her sister as she made her way upstairs and passed Clementine's bedroom on the way to hers.

"Hi Oli Green Giant," Clementine giggled. She loved the silly nicknames she and her sister had for each other.

"Where's Dad?" Olive asked, after giving Clementine a hug.

"He's at rehearsal," Clementine said.

"Oh did that start today?" Olive asked. Her parents were both actors, as was she, while Clementine was starting to take an interest in sports.

"Yep! Hey Oli, I got a question for ya," Olive had sat down on Clementine's bed, and Clementine was making herself comfortable in her sister's lap.

"What's up?" Olive asked.

"Well, yesterday when Daddy and I got home from pre-k, I went upstairs to play in my room - but then I remembered I forgot something downstairs - I went to go get it and I heard Mommy and Daddy talking. They were talking about Mommy taking a test."

Olive was puzzled. "A test? What kind of test?"

"Well all I heard was Mommy say 'and now I'm two days late' and then Daddy said 'well I think you should just bite the bullet and take a test. I'll pick one up after rehearsal," Clementine answered. "Is it like the kind of test you take at school?"

Olive let out a hearty guffaw which covered up how she was really feeling. "No, Clemmy," she replied.

"Well what kind of test is it?" Clementine demanded.

"Umm…that's a great question to ask Mommy and Daddy sometime - but maybe not today," Olive said. "I'm going to go unpack from my sleepover," Olive said, slowly rising.

"Okay!" Clementine said happily, picking up her toy ponies.

Unbeknownst to their daughters, later that day (although Clementine wouldn't have understood what it meant anyway), Jesse had been at the drugstore browsing the pregnancy test aisle when he received a text from Rachel.

FORGET THE PREGNANCY TEST! AUNT FLO HAS ARRIVED!

She'd also included various confetti, balloon, and champagne bottle emojis.

It took Jesse a minute to register what the text meant. At first he was puzzled - one of Rachel's dads was an only child and the other only had two brothers. Then it hit him and he nearly cheered in the middle of the drugstore. He put the test he was holding back and instead made his way to the convenience store next door where he bought frozen lemonades for himself, his wife, and their two beautiful children. Their ONLY two children. Then, he went home, picked Rachel up and spun her around, gave her the lemonade, and sat down to look up vasectomy appointments.

Olive had been in her room, trying to debate whether or not to ask her parents about what Clementine had told her. Finally, she couldn't take it any longer, surely Mom had taken the test by now.

Olive went downstairs to find her parents in the family room, Dad was on his phone, and both he and Mom were laughing at the TV and drinking frozen lemonades.

"Hi," Olive said softly.

Jesse looked up.

"Hi, Oli - how was the sleepover?" Jesse asked.

"Great…uh, how was rehearsal?" Olive asked.

"Good - a lot of fun," Jesse replied. "I've got frozen lemonades for you and your sister in the freezer," he smiled and Olive smiled back.

"Thanks. Um…speaking of my sister," Olive began. Rachel and Jesse were staring at Olive now. "She told me something kinda interesting when I got home from Sara's."

"Oh?" Rachel inquired.

"Yes…she, of course, didn't understand but I sure did. She said she'd heard you say that you were late and that Dad said he'd pick up a test for you. Might that test have been a pregnancy test?" Olive asked.

Rachel and Jesse laughed.

"Yes," Rachel replied. "You know I haven't been feeling well and then my period was late…but I got it this morning so I'm not pregnant."

"Oh, thank God," Olive muttered. Her parents looked at her quizzically.

"I mean there are no better parents than you two," Olive said. "Especially to children that happened to come at very unexpected points in your lives - this isn't unfamiliar territory to y'all by any means," Olive paused as her parents laughed.

"But…in terms of siblings I'm perfectly happy with just Clementine…and Maya. As stubborn as I can be, it turns out they're both pretty dang swell and I can't imagine myself loving another sibling as much as I love them. And, I know the two of you weren't planning on having any more babies either, so I'm glad you don't have to worry about…that," Olive said.

Jesse chuckled again.

"Yes, this is a relief to your mother and me, too. We couldn't be happier with the family that we have, and it took one hell of a journey to get where we are today."

Olive hugged each of her parents and sat down.

"So, out of curiosity - what produce item would you have named this one after?" Olive asked.

"Hmm…well since it's strictly hypothetical now - I think Berry after my maiden name would've been cute," Rachel said. Truthfully, she and Jesse hadn't had a theme or anything when picking their daughters' names - Olive's name had in fact been inspired by a trip to the grocery store Jesse had taken, while Clementine's name had been inspired by Rachel hearing "Oh My Darling Clementine" on the radio one day in the car.

Clementine entered the room excitedly. "Hi Daddy!" She exclaimed, quickly climbing on her father's lap.

"Hi, hon," Jesse smiled back, kissing Clementine on the forehead.

Clementine's smile suddenly turned into a serious facial expression.

"You know what I want more than anything?" Clementine asked.

"What's that, love?" Jesse asked.

"A baby brother or sister. Can I get one, pleeeeease?" Clementine pleaded.

Jesse paused.

"The best I can give you is a frozen lemonade," Jesse replied, kissing Clementine's forehead again as Rachel and Olive laughed.
