"Monsters come in all shapes and sizes"

-Neil Gaiman

In the old days, the Yokais lived in the forests, hidden from humanity or living in hiding among them. It was not an easy time, especially for the more vulnerable Yokai, but despite this, they managed to live as best they could. That is until the great war between the Yokai and a village of humans that betrayed them, a very important event that forever changed the lives of these beings.

However, if there is something to highlight about them, it is the fact that they have their own traditions just like human beings.

And one of the most important is the "Saisei no Gishiki" (再生の儀式) or "Rebirth Ritual".

A holiday that only the Yokais know and celebrate, a date that occurs every 100 years, more specifically, at the end of winter, just before the beginning of spring.

An event where all those Yokais of great power and status belonging to the Yokai Council must gather together with their families at the top of a mountain and perform a ritual, which will be repeated just after another 100 years have passed. Always the same process, fulfilling the same requirements without exception.

For the Yokais it is of vital importance to carry out this ritual, because it is thanks to it that they obtain their strength, vitality, longevity and above all power. If not carried out correctly, the consequences for each of them will be devastating.

But that is a separate issue.

Originally Nurarihyon, former leader of the Council and of the Yokais in general, was the one who carried out this event, but after his death at the hands of Osamu Yureimoto, his responsibility fell to him and his wife Amaya.

Who just now were in "The Yokai Mountain", an ancient mountain located in Gensokyo where for generations the Ritual of Rebirth has been carried out. Just outside a huge stone gate only visible to the yokai and remained closed, with several engravings on it, which are nothing more than the symbols of each of the yokai clans.

They were awaiting the arrival of their old Yokai companions, being the leaders of the other villages. They were somewhat reluctant to interact with their old sparring partners, however, being a whole society of monsters, they could not be separated forever, they will inevitably have to coexist and cooperate in some way.

And the Saisei no Gishiki was a good example of this.

"They should have arrived by now." Amaya said rather bitter.

"Be patient my dear, the way here is long and tedious, and not everyone has the ability to teleport in the shadows like you." Osamu replied calmly trying to lighten his wife's impatience.

"That's no excuse for them to be late, they know perfectly well that they wake up today to start with the planning of the ritual, and you know they don't tolerate delays, but look at this, they haven't arrived yet." Amaya spat coldly "I'm not surprised actually, what can you expect from a bunch of inept people like them."

"Watch your words Amaya, you don't know who you can provoke." a voice said behind her back.

It belonged to Inari Takagi, a very powerful Kitsune, ruler of the village closest to Yureimoto Village.

Inari was a 9-tailed Kitsune with great beauty and majesty, adding a serious, wise, intelligent, benevolent and kind personality. Well, contrary to what many Yokais may think, Inari despite her social status as a village leader, treated everyone equally, always looking out for the welfare of her family and her villagers. At the same time he had a marked rivalry with Amaya since they were young, and despite the passage of centuries he continues to have friction with the Kitsune.

"Inari, my old friend." Osamu bowed to the Kitsune.

"It's been a while Osamu." Inari returned the bow. "The last time I saw the two of you was at the Night Parade. As usual you wanted a battle, but your daughter was smart enough to step in and let us go in peace."

"I know, Fumiko is like that, always so considerate as to stop her old father from fighting and getting hurt." Osamu said proudly together.

Inari found Osamu's impudence in claiming that his daughter prevented the conflict for him unbelievable. But she decided not to recriminate, it was not worth it at all.

"I can see that Osamu, the truth is I wonder who she got it from, because I don't think from your wife, except for that bitter woman, unfortunately." Inari mocked, looking into Amaya's eyes.

The Yureimoto matriarch snapped her teeth at the kitsune's comment, she wanted with all her might to tear out her tongue or use one of her spells to cause her an agonizing death, but she had no choice but to endure her presence.

"Aghhhh, by Santiago, I hate walking here!" someone's voice was heard complaining.

The three yokai leaders turned, and before them the rest of the yokai generals began to appear.

The first one being Kano Miyamoto, to whom the voice that complained a moment ago belonged, was an Otakemaru (a kind of Oni) with blue skin, yellow eyes, long black hair and beard, from which sprouted some white hair denoting his old age, and wearing an elegant and somewhat tattered kimono of red and yellow colors along with a pair of leopard skin pants. At the same time, like many oni, he had a pair of long horns, similar to those of a goat, protruding from his head. Always with a strong character and a rather carefree personality, he had been a great yokai warrior, fighting in many battles and killing most of his enemies, something that his numerous scars showed.

Next to him was Tetsuo Fujita, a Hitotsume Nuydo (large statured cyclops) of stout build, with a small tuft of hair on his head, his one eye of a dark blue color, and wearing a bright blue kimono and black pants. With the patience, humility and wisdom of a Buddhist monk, this cyclops was someone difficult to get on your nerves, preferring to maintain a neutral attitude and posture with the people around him. He would ask his companion to calm down, reminding him that he was in the sacred place, to which the latter complained about how he had constantly tripped over trees and rocks all along the way.

Behind them followed Ozuru Osaki, a Hoo, a kind of phoenix of great height endowed with a beautiful plumage of bright colors, and wearing on his back a dark green cloak. In his best years he was characterized by his eccentricity, charisma and grace, qualities that made him beloved by many yokais, while he was also a great strategist when it came to surprise attacks. However, after the war and after losing one of his wings, he changed a lot, becoming more angry, bitter and frivolous with those around him, leaving aside what was once a very nice yokai.

"You really have to be so unbearable Kano!" Ozuru complained, who was already fed up with his Oni companion. For he was forced to travel along with him and Tetsuo after crossing paths with them on the way.

"It's easy for you to say chicken face, you don't have blurred vision!" Kano said angrily, showing him his left eye, a blind eye through which a huge scar crossed and was covered with a thick gray layer that barely let you see his pupil and iris.

"Comrades, it's not worth fighting about it anymore, we're already here and we have work to do." Tetsuo said, mediating between the two before things got out of control.

Osamu approached them bowing, which they returned, although Kano did so very reluctantly. The daitengu welcomed them, assuring them that they were waiting for them and that they had arrived on time as the stone doors had not yet opened. The big cyclops thanked him for the warning, while Kano just gritted his teeth and Ozuru just nodded.

Suddenly they heard a rather creepy laughter, and right from the shadow of Tetsuo emerged a dark figure, which moments later was positioned next to the yokai cyclops, he jumped in surprise and his skin crawled, feeling chills by that heavy aura and icy air emanating from that entity.

She was Kyoko Oonishi, a disembodied female entity, consisting of a large dark shadow with multiple eyes all over her body. Most yokais were afraid of this sovereign, not only because of her disturbing appearance, but also because of her sadistic, vain and mysterious personality. She had a great ability to sneak into the shadows and appear to people by surprise, while she had a great knowledge of spells and potions, a skill comparable to that of Amaya.

The shadow woman began to tease the poor Cyclops, telling him that he looked like a scared chicken, and that he was always the easiest to scare with simple tricks like that. However, this did not cause Tetsuo any amusement.

Finally, Ichiro Morimoto, a Furaribi, a kind of lion with wings wrapped in flames, wearing a kind of incomplete kimono, as it had only one sleeve, was yellow with a red ribbon. He was characterized by a spontaneous, naive and friendly personality. Being the youngest of the yokai leaders, and ruler of the most secluded village, his opinion was not taken into account by the majority, although over the centuries and having gained enough experience he managed to earn the respect of his peers.

"Sorry for the delay, friends." the lion yokai apologized with a bow..

"Late as usual little Morimoto, you really have no shame." Amaya said coldly.

Ichiro just shrugged his shoulders and lowered his ears feeling embarrassed. Amaya had always had this strange habit of addressing him as a child, even though they were all full-fledged adults.

"I-I'm sorry, Amaya." Ichiro apologized nervously. He out of respect and fear for the kijo herself and her magic, never sought to lash out at her. He had known her for a long, long time actually, and knew what she was capable of.

Amaya wanted to continue her reprimand towards the yokai, but was interrupted when a strange noise was present.

All the members of the extinct Yokai Council turned their gazes towards the stone doors and observed that the huge stone doors began to show a kind of blue glow and then slowly opened, inviting those present to enter.

"Good news my friends!" Osamu said joyfully, standing in front of the entrance and raising his arms in jubilation "The Three Wise Monkeys have awakened!"

The basin, if you could call it that, was a huge place, with a beautiful engraving on the floor consisting of lines and circles with some kanji, which connected to a series of 7 huge circles, which had the symbol of each clan of the yokai council engraved on them.

In addition to this, the walls of the huge cave showed a series of paintings that seemed to tell a story, or rather a kind of ritual. It showed a series of figures dressed elegantly on clouds, and below a representation of Japan with its villages and mountains, figures of humans and yokais, the volcano, the cave and most notably, a series of yokais divided into eight groups, each forming its own circle, while a kind of light or red auras enveloped them, these lights then came out of the volcano to cover all of Japan, and the yokais scattered were also enveloped by this light.

Basically, that was the Saisei no Gishiki.

Osamu, Amaya and company went into the center of the volcano, where right in the middle of it was a huge mouth where the lava was, and of course, this was not active so there was no danger of it jumping out and hurting someone.

Moments later, small clouds appeared and gradually took shape, revealing a figure of what appeared to be three animals. Following this, the clouds poofed, revealing three monkeys, one carrying another and one carrying another.

They were 3 brown monkeys, dressed with kimonos made to their size, one had a yellow kimono, the second one was red and the third one was light blue. This trio upon noticing the presence of the yokais broke their formation and settled one next to the other, having the one with the red kimono in the middle.

"Kikazaru, Mizaru, Iwazaru, my lords." Osamu spoke, bowing to the three monkeys, and both his wife and fellow yokai also bowed to them as a sign of absolute respect.

"Osamu, and everyone, we meet again." Kikazaru, the monkey in the yellow kimono who seemed to be the leader, greeted us.

"100 years again?" spoke the second monkey, Mizaru "Time flies fast"

The yokai leaders stood up, Amaya was about to ask the three monkeys something, but the third one prevented her.

"You said it, Mizaru! It's incredible, only 100 years ago you were here, then you weren't and now you're here again!" Iwazaru shouted with enthusiasm and a gleam of excitement in his eyes.

This monkey always stood out for his joy and eccentricity, something very different from his older brothers Kikazaru and Mizaru, who were more serious and calm.

"I know Iwazaru, I know."

Amaya cleared her throat to get their attention. The three monkeys then turned to her.

"My Lords, I wanted to know what plans you have for the Saisei no Gishiki."

"I'm glad you asked dear Amaya, we have a lot in mind for each of you." said the first monkey.

"Yes, we have many ideas in mind." the youngest of the brothers shouted.

"But, all in good time dear brother, before..." the monkey named Mizaru snapped his fingers, making those eight large circles carved in the ground begin to emanate an intense light blue glow.

"Go ahead children, go to the place that belongs to you, we have a lot of work to do. " applauded Kikazaru giving them the order to move, the yokai leaders obeyed.

Osamu and Amaya went to their respective circle, and when they placed themselves in the middle of it, the symbol that represented their family began to shine with more intensity, a light that did not bother them at all. The same happened with their other companions, who had already placed themselves in their respective places, although Kano covered his healthy eye claiming that the light hurt his eyesight, but the rest ignored it. After that they directed their sight towards the center of the mouth of the volcano where the three wise monkeys were, waiting for their next instructions.

Big brother Kikazaru began to float and go around the huge circle the rulers had formed, as he began to explain.

"Very well children, as tradition dictates, each of the patriarchs and matriarchs of the royal clans must gather their descendants, place them around their shield to form the circle of life." He pointed to the circles on which they were standing.

"Remember that every blood member of the family must be present in this circle or else the ritual will not recognize you as a clan." Mizaru said imitating his brother and floating around the room while looking with serious eyes at each of the yokais present.

"Because if that happens, the ritual will fail, and remember that the consequences can be..." Iwazaru spoke making a death gesture "You know... horrible."

All the Yokai leaders nodded in unison, accepting the directions and warnings the monkeys were giving them. Even though they already knew all this by heart a lot, it never hurt to keep the rules of their tradition in mind. For they did not want anything to go wrong.

"Next, we will check how many members of your families will be present to organize the circles of life." said the eldest as he motioned to his siblings.

Without wasting any time, they each went to a different circle, raised their hands and made a gesture pretending to pass them over the circles, thus causing other circles but this time smaller ones around the outline of the main circle. These small circles basically represented each of the members of the respective clans.

Mizaru began first with Inari, revealing 15 small circles, to which the main circle was extended along with these, also took the opportunity to congratulate her for her grandchildren and for the new ones that had just been born, to which the Kitsune thanked her. Then she went to Ichiro, who was 12 and also congratulated him for his family, then to Kano, who was 14 and Ozuru, who was 10.

Iwazaru on his side saw that Tetsuo had only 6 circles, and likewise congratulating him, he then turned to Kyoko, who had 11. Finally, he turned to Osamu and Amaya revealing that they had 24 circles.

Wait, 24 circles?

"Wait a moment, master Iwazaru!" Amaya shouted, calling the attention of that monkey as well as that of the other brothers and the other yokais. "There must be a mistake in our circle, there can't be 24 of them."

"My wife is right my lords, our family is not so big, because if my calculations are correct, we are 13 in total, with my wife, my children, my granddaughters and my son-in-law." Osamu spoke serenely, believing like his wife that it should be some mistake.

"I'm afraid to tell you both that it's not like that, these are all members of your clan, and let me congratulate you both, I didn't think the family was going to extend so much, hehe." Iwazaru said smiling and congratulating the couple.

They turned to look at each other, sharing the same feeling of confusion, not understanding what was happening.

"I insist that there must be some kind of mistake, we only have seven children and three granddaughters, not counting my daughter's husband." Amaya said with special emphasis on the word "husband" and saying it in a very dry tone.

"It's no mistake, Amaya, let us clear it up for you." Kikazaru flew towards her and Osamu. "Some of these circles belong to your children and granddaughters, plus your son-in-law who is human and one of your half-human granddaughters, a novelty honestly."

"It is, never a human and a hybrid between human and yokai had been part of a clan, but there is always a first time." Mizaru said.

"Exactly, however, the rest of the circles belong to other children who, as far as I can see, do not have your blood but do have your husband's blood." said the eldest of the monkeys with incredible serenity.

"What do you mean by that?" Amaya asked, who had already formed an idea of what that meant, but didn't want to confirm it.

"Those circles belong to the rest of Osamu's children and grandchildren."

Everyone present, excluding the three monkeys, gasped in response, it was a huge surprise, but more so for Osamu, who was undaunted, perhaps trying to process those words.

He had other children and grandchildren!

The daitengu coming out of his impavor realized that his wife was watching him with a murderous look, silently telling him explain yourself.

No doubt this was going to be a very long day.

Hi everyone!

Yes, I know you must have a lot of questions at this point.

What is going on?

Who are the three wise monkeys?

Osamu has other children?!

Don't worry everyone, these questions will be answered in due time.

For now, enjoy this first chapter of one of my most ambitious projects. I had been thinking about it for a year, but instead of doing it in a stupid way, I took the necessary time to plan it and polish it to my liking.

Another thing I can also assure you is that all the important characters from the original comic will appear, as well as new ones (OC's) created by me and the roles they will have in this story will be very interesting.

Of course, there will be some important changes in the Lore of the comic as it is an Alternate Universe, besides I will take into account only the events that happened up to The Night Parade part. 44, the episodes that follow this one do not influence the story at all, but the essence that characterizes the original comic will be maintained as much as possible.
