Operation Halloween

"Daddy! You're finally home!" Angie ran at Steve as soon as he entered the house. He had enough time to drop his keys on the table just inside the door and catch the catapulted form that was his daughter.

"That's some greeting." He grinned and kissed her cheek. "I'm sorry I missed storytime and breakfast."

"It's okay, you were finding a lost person." She tightened her hug before leaning back in his arms to see his face. "And she's home with her mommy and daddy now, Mommy said."

"Mommy's right." He placed her on her feet and she followed him upstairs to secure his weapon. "Everyone is fine." He and the team had worked 18 hours on the kidnapping of a high schooler who'd been taken from a beach on the north shore. A robbery gone bad when two local thugs tried to grab the girl's backpack from a moving car in a snatch and grab but it was over both shoulders and she couldn't let go. The more stoned of the two grabbed her and lifted the screaming teen into their vehicle and drove off in front of her two friends who'd ran the better part of a mile while calling 911.

Luckily, the guys holed up in an abandoned home that was on the property of a relative and hid out. Kaley Onomoto was scared, but unhurt, after they'd locked her in a room and tried to come up with a ransom note even after realizing the girl had blue collar parents who were unlikely targets for a kidnapped child. Once located by the team, they'd surrendered without incident and a very relieved and happy Kaley was reunited with her frantic parents.

"Good job, Daddy." Angie held out a little hand and he fist bumped it with a smile.

"Thank you, baby girl." He'd showered and changed at HQ and was more than ready for dinner with the family.

"Mommy and DJ are on the deck with Cammie. We're havin' cheeseburgers and salad and fries." She led him downstairs and out towards the deck hand in hand.

"Sounds great, I'm starving."

"Hi Daddy!" DJ greeted him the minute he stepped foot outside. "The food's almost done. We started the burgers as soon as you called." He wrapped his father in a hug. With a glance towards his sister, who had begun carefully placing the salad bowl on the table, the nine year old lowered his voice and said, "You were on the news, but Angie didn't see it. Are the girl and her family okay?"

Steve kissed his head. "She's fine. The paramedics even checked her out before she went home with her mom and dad."

"That's so good. I'm happy you and the team saved her and she's okay." His large, dark eyes were filled with their usual compassion and Steve wrapped an arm over his shoulder as they walked to the table.

"Hey, sailor, bet you're hungry," Catherine said by way of greeting as she stepped up to kiss him hello. "Missed you last night, we read the goat books twice."

They shared a smile when Angie piped up with, "We can read them again for you, Daddy," with a smile as she took a seat and he slid over next to her.

"How was everyone's day?" he asked as he spooned salad onto the children's plates.

"Good!" "Very very fun!" they responded together, and glancing at each other, both siblings giggled.

"Angie has something important to talk about," DJ offered. "Go first, Angie."

The five year old smiled excitedly at her brother. She'd been waiting since right after school to bring up her topic to Mommy and Daddy and didn't want to wait another minute. "Halloween is almost here!"

"It is." Catherine grinned at Steve, suspecting what was coming.

"We need to pick out costumes."

"We do," her mother agreed. "Last minute choices are a thing of the past." She caught his eyes as she passed Steve the ketchup.

"I want to match Daddy!" Angie announced.

Steve gave his wife an amused smirk. "You want us all to match or you want to match me?" he clarified.

"I want to match you and be Five-0 and catch bad guys like you did in Costco!" She'd been more keenly aware of what her father did after seeing him in action, however briefly. She asked about if a bad guy tried to run away after every mention of a case and had even asked her Uncle Danno, Uncle Chin and Auntie Kono if they'd had to run after any bad guys that day more than once.

Catherine pressed her lips together and raised her brows. "You want to wear regular clothes to match Daddy?" She held back a snort of laughter at Steve's hopeful expression when she said 'regular clothes'.

"Not his regular clothes. No boardies, and not court clothes." She pointed to his pants. "Those color pants and a t-shirt and your other shirt on top and a badge and holster and my tac vest with my name on it."

Steve smiled at how observant his daughter was - how she knew the details of what he normally wore to work.

DJ smiled. "That's a cool idea, Angie! Daddy, what do you think?"

"I think if that's what you really want to wear, I'm happy you want to be like me, baby girl." He thought of Gracie wearing Catherine's old, altered uniform so many years ago and smiled. "Should I wear my work clothes and match you?" His voice held a hopeful tone that only Catherine picked up and again she stifled a smile.

"But that would mean you'd be yourself for Halloween," DJ said.

"I can do that…" Steve began, but Angie shook her head. "No, Daddy, you hafta be something else, you can't be yourself." She smiled. "You can be a goat!"

Catherine couldn't hold in a laugh, and widened her eyes at him. "Brown pants and t-shirt and little horns, Steve."

He grinned. "A goat. I like it."

"Yay! We can take pictures and show Felix, he'll love it so much!"

"So what about DJ and Mommy?" Steve kissed her little cheek. "Any thoughts, buddy?"

"I was thinking of a superhero, maybe Spiderman, but I'm not sure yet."

"You have time to think. You don't have to pick today." Catherine refilled his glass and smiled.

"Hey!" he said, a thought popping into his mind. "Mommy, if you're a goat too, you and Daddy would match."

"Yay! You could match Daddy," Angie added with hopeful eyes on her mother.

"That's a great idea, sweetheart." Catherine kissed DJ's head and smiled conspiratorially at Steve; it was also super easy.

DJ's eyes widened and he grinned broadly.

"That looks like an idea face." Steve pointed at his son with the fry he was about to eat.

"It is." The little boy nodded. "But I need to call Grandpa after dinner first."

"Oh, a surprise costume?" his mother asked.

"Maybe. I'll call him right after we eat."

"Sounds like we're on the road to Operation Halloween" Steve grinned and winked at his family. "I can't wait."
