Chapter 3 – For Someone to Listen
Luka wasn't expecting his shift to be any different.
That wasn't a bad thing, same was good. And the café and the Dupain-Cheng's and the customers were amazing.
It was familiar and nice.
He was content in that.
But then, he was sitting there, in the back.
Luka wasn't expecting much to come out of that, either.
But he was nice.
Adrien. Adrien was nice.
And then, already, after only 5 minutes of talking, Luka wanted to see him again.
And then Adrien had left.
And he wasn't sure he'd ever see his gorgeous green eyes again.
But then he did.
Adrien ran into him.
And Luka felt the excitement rage a fire in his chest, he could hear the melody that had gotten stuck in his head since meeting Adrien the day before.
Adrien's melody.
Adrien.
And then it felt like the universe was telling him something, because Adrien got a job at the Dupain-Cheng café, and Luka felt that excitement raging again.
And Adrien lived next to him – right next to him!
He played Adrien's melody that night.
And the next.
All in the hope that Adrien was listening.
He knew that the blonde boy was.
But
Adrien didn't come again that week.
He didn't come back until it was for his shift, and he'd hoped that maybe they would be able to go to work together, but Adrien had already left.
He'd been hoping that they'd be able to go to the park together.
And it seemed like maybe Adrien was avoiding him.
Why?
What was wrong?
What had he done wrong?
But then Luka had seen Adrien standing there behind the counter, and Luka couldn't help the smile that grew on his face.
A soft, warm smile. Glad to see Adrien again.
He swore he could hear the melody playing in the store, not whatever was playing over the speakers.
He'd barely known Adrien a week, they'd hardly spoken for even half an hour yet.
But he was getting attached.
He always did.
So quickly.
And though Luka knew it wouldn't last, that he would pull away afraid to commit, to get hurt, he wanted so desperately to have Adrien as his.
Even for the whirlwind month it would last.
That was enough.
It was always enough.
Then he would move on
Get attached to another
Like he always did.
Because that was how it worked.
Just long enough for someone to listen to his music.
Just long enough to be held by someone.
Have rough nights of fun, nights which meant more than the hookups he had.
He knew how it would go.
They'd start talking, casually.
Check.
Then Luka would get attached. Attached because they were attractive. Because he wanted to fuck them. And so he'd begin his pursuit.
He'd start flirting with them, more than he would casually flirt with anyone when all he was after was a one night stand, or just for a few minute distraction.
And then they'd get closer.
But Luka wouldn't become romantically attached.
But then they'd have sex, and then for a month all would be good.
And then Luka would end it.
And maybe sometimes they'd have sex again.
Because he was toxic.
He knew he was.
He was a playboy, because commitment terrified him. He didn't want people to leave and hurt him, so he did it first.
And maybe because of that Adrien should be off limits. They were coworkers, and he couldn't be sure that Adrien was interested in guys.
Maybe being friends would be good enough.
And it was.
But he wanted more.
