Pregnant. The word had been swirling in Hermione's head since Mrs. Weasley had mistaken her for being so, but she knew better there was no way she was at least not with his child. Sitting on her and Ron's bed she took a couple of deep breaths. Hoping to calm her racing mind Hermione tried to remember when she had last had her monthly visitor but for some reason nothing came up. Frustrated with herself Hermione got up off the bed and decided to just get a test that was the logical thing to do.
Getting out of bed Hermione went to the closet and grabbed a light jacket it was only fall but it was getting chilly outside. Making her way down the steps she could see Molly whispering with Ginny in the kitchen. Wondering what they were talking about Hermione crept closer tiptoeing hoping the floor wouldn't creek under her feet.
The whispers grew louder with each well-placed step she took.
"And what if Hermione is pregnant?" She recognized the youngest Weasley voice.
Now in front of the kitchen door she leaned into it and listened intently hoping to find out why they were talking about her. The sound of chopping could be heard from the other side of the door. No doubt Molly was preparing lunch already.
"Well I hate to be that parent but Ron and her would have to get married and she would have to learn to be a homemaker." Hermione couldn't believe what she was hearing. There was no way someone was going to tell her what she was going to do with her life. The thought alone made anger rise in her but before she could storm into the room and give the older woman a piece of her mind Ginny spoke up.
"She's never going to go for that though Hermione wants a career and I don't think a kid would stop her from doing that."
Holding her breath to hear better Hermione's heart was racing and she knew her face was pinched in anger. The seconds felt like forever as she waited for the elder Weasley to answer.
"Well that just shows what your younger generation knows how you think pureblood wizards controlled their wives and made sure they didn't put the heirs in danger." Molly said matter a fact.
Hermione's blood boiled as she listened to the words come out of the mouth of someone she had looked up to and hoped to be apart of her family but now she wasn't so sure about that.
"How?" Ginny's voice cut through Hermione's angry thoughts.
"Simple there is a marriage vow you take it's similar to that of the unbreakable vow but it doesn't cause death to the mother it causes a miscarriage, because the woman did not listen to her husband who is just trying to protect the fetus and the future of his house."
What? Hermione couldn't believe what she was hearing there was no way this was happening to her. The thought of someone making her take a vow she didn't want to she wanted to punch something or someone, she didn't think Ron would make her do that, but she also knew Mrs. Weasley could easily persuade her son to do it that's why they were still living with her. Hermione had decided enough was enough she didn't care if she was pregnant, she certainly was not going to continue to live here. And besides even if she was pregnant it wasn't Ron's anyway Hermione would love to see Mrs. Weasley face if it turned out to be true that she was pregnant and there was but one possibility that of a former Death Eater Lucius Malfoy. Hermione was sure the older woman would have an aneurism. Not wanting to listen anymore she quickly turned on her heel and ran out the door. Feeling she was past the anti apparation wards Hermione closed her eyes and felt the familiar pull as she landed on shaky feet in front of her parents' old house.
Staring at what was once her childhood home Hermine couldn't help but feel a pang in her chest for the parents who had no idea they even had a daughter, but she knew it was the right decision at the time they would have been killed if not for her actions that night. Shaking away the memories Hermione made her way to the now abandoned house. The gravel crunched under her boots and echoed off the porch, she mentally prepared herself to enter the house she once called home.
The first thing she noticed was the musty smell of the house she forgotten how long it had been shut up for. Walking through the threshold the first thing that caught her eye was the couch that her parents had been sitting on when she had taken all that was precious to them. Willing herself to focus Hermione went up the stairs. Turing, she came face to face with her childhood bedroom door slowly reaching out her hand wrapped around the bronze door handle and pushed until it gave way.
Stepping inside Hermione surveyed her surroundings everything had been left the way she last seen it. The table in her room facing the window with assorted papers and pens neatly in their place, her bed was up against the wall on the left hand side, and her dresser still full of clothes was on the opposite wall next to her equally full closet door this realization made her remember she took hardly anything with her when she left except and few clothes, a couple of books, her toothbrush, and her wand.
Walking further into the room memories stated to race in her mind involuntarily; like losing her first tooth or the countless times her mom would read her a bedtime story. The tears started to form in her vision Hermione took a deep breath to settle her emotions. Remembering why she came here she quickly opened to drawer to her desk and reached inside retrieving the muggle money she knew that was stashed here.
With the money in hand Hermione raced down the stairs and out the door her heart pounding the whole way she only stopped when her boots hit the asphalt outside slowing herself down the beating in her heart subsided. Reaching up and runner her hands through her hair Hermione let the tears flow freely she didn't know why she was crying, was it for the way Molly wanted to turn her into a mini version of herself or for her parents who would know what has happened to her. Hermione couldn't be sure.
Suddenly her thoughts shifted to that Lucius Malfoy the father of her maybe baby. If it was true and she was pregnant she would have to tell him that was the right thing to do but knowing him he would want nothing to do with the baby. The last time she had seen him was the night he asked her to go to bed with him in exchange for him helping her escape his house.
The wind began to pick up, so Hermione grabbed her jacket and wrapped it around herself more snuggly. She was almost there. Thinking on it some more, Hermione hadn't even realized if she was having a baby how she would act as a mother and would she be any good at it. She always wanted kids but later down the road.
Arriving outside of a large building Hermione quickly went inside and looked at the signs above each isle until she found one marked with Pregnancy Test. Turning down the aisle her eyes scanned different products like Menstrual pads, tampons, adult diapers, and condoms which she felt was mocking her because those could have saved her a lot of trouble, even though she doubted Lucius would use them being a muggle invention after all. Cursing the blasted condoms Hermione continued down the aisle finding what she was looking for.
Looking at the pregnancy test she couldn't believe how many there were, and she wasn't sure what brand to get but in typical fashion she didn't want to cheap out, so she skipped the four pound ones and went with one priced in the center range Ten pound. With test in hand Hermione made her way to the check out.
Giving the cashier the money, she swiped up her purchase and made her exit back to her house. Looking at her watch Hermione was in shock it was ten past eleven she knew she ought to hurry before her friends came searching for her or worst Ron went looking for her. Then a thought came crashing down if she was pregnant how was she going to explain to her fiancé what had happened. Hermione already knew that this was the end of her relationship and her friends would never speak to her again. The thought alone made her eyes fill with tears, sniffling she decided she wasn't going to start crying until she had a good reason so far it was all speculation and that was all.
Making it back Hermione urgently opened the front door and taking the stairs two at a time made it to the bathroom. Not even bothering to close the door she ripped the test out of the bag and tore it open. Reading the instructions nodding to herself Hermione followed the directions after she was done, she set in on the counter and set her watch for three minutes. The longest Three minutes of her life.
