39-year-old Rachel Berry St. James could barely contain her excitement. Her daughter Olive, 12, was at school, and her husband Jesse, 41, was at rehearsal.

Rachel and Jesse were both actors - originally from Ohio where they had met in high school, they were now living in New York where they balanced busy careers with raising Olive.

Olive was Rachel and Jesse's first child together, but she had not been the first baby Rachel had given birth to. Having been conceived with an egg donor and born to gay fathers herself, when her high school friends Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson annouced they were ready to have a baby, Rachel had eagerly offered to be the egg donor and surrogate. They accepted this offer, and just eleven months before Olive was born, Rachel gave birth to Maya Hummel-Anderson.

Rachel had always considered Maya as much "her girl" as Olive, but the pair hadn't always gotten along. It wasn't until a then ten-year-old Maya had spent some time with the St. James family while her dads were on vacation, that she and nine-year-old Olive had bonded. They were now inseparable and often referred to themselves as sisters, much to the delight of their parents.

Rachel was beyond happy having Maya and Olive in her life - she might be biased, but they were so smart, so talented, and she couldn't be more proud of her girls.

However, Rachel and Jesse had always known they wanted to have two children together. Clearly, Rachel had had no trouble getting pregnant with Olive - she and Jesse had been just barely in the clear to "get it on" after the postpartum-phase, and the one time they'd done it before that point Jesse had used protection to ensure Rachel wouldn't get pregnant again so soon. But that March night - and Rachel could remember it so vividly - emotions had been running high and the couple had, quite frankly, thrown caution to the wind. While Jesse had been worried about what getting pregnant and giving birth again soon would do to Rachel's body, things had ended up going better than expected.

That being said, the couple had been more careful in waiting to try for their second child. Shortly after Olive's second birthday, Operation Second Baby had been underway…and nothing.

After two more years of trying, Rachel and Jesse had gone to the very fertility clinic Rachel had gotten pregnant with Maya at, in order to get tested - and results were clear on both ends.

Ten years later, they had never given up hope. It had been hard, though, Rachel had made the mistake of looking at baby pictures of Olive one day after another failed attempt at having a second child. And she lost it.

But now, as she held this tiny stick in her hands - and her tears blurred the two lines in front of her, she thought about how those two lines also represented the two beautiful children she and Jesse had made together.

She had been debating how to tell him. With Olive, she had woken him up screaming in the middle of the night because she couldn't wait a second longer. She finally decided to take the same route she and Jesse had taken when announcing her pregnancy with Maya to Kurt and Blaine. She had hopped on the website of the boutique she'd ordered Kurt and Blaine's "World's Greatest Dad" shirts and ordered Jesse a shirt - it had a different message, though (she'd already gotten him one of those shirts for Father's Day years ago and put Olive's name on the card.)

She was glad he'd be home from rehearsal before Olive got home from school. She was sure telling her daughter she was going to be a big sister was going to elicit a much different response than telling Jesse he was going to be a father again.

Olive was a good kid - and she did have a big heart. But she was used to having her parents all to herself, and Rachel was sure a big part of the reason she'd had such a hard time getting along with Maya initially was because of her jealousy over Maya's bond with Rachel, and the attention both Rachel and Jesse gave her when she was around. Olive was going to have to share her parents' attention with the new baby all the time and that…was going to take time.

Rachel gingerly thumbed Jesse's shirt - she'd wrapped it up in some plaid wrapping paper she'd picked up while running errands today.

The garage door startled Rachel out of her thoughts and she squealed in both surprise and excitement. Jesse entered shortly thereafter.

"Hey, how was rehearsal?" Rachel asked.

"Great! I can't wait for you to come see the show - Olive, too. It's hilarious and you'll both just love it," Jesse kissed Rachel's cheek.

"I can't wait for us to see it either," Rachel smiled.

"I'm in the mood for a glass of wine, how about you, Rach?" Jesse asked.

"I'm good with my water," Rachel smiled.

Jesse furrowed his brow. The last time his wife had turned down wine, she'd been pregnant with Olive.

Still, he didn't think anything of it. She *had* mentioned trying to cut back a little.

"What's that?" Jesse asked, noticing the package.

"It's for you!" Rachel said excitedly. Rachel's enthusiasm both surprised and delighted Jesse and he chuckled.

"Aw, you didn't have to get me anything," he smiled, sitting next to her.

"I did," Rachel kissed his nose.

"I feel bad that I didn't get you anything," Jesse lamented, starting to open the package.

"Oh, believe me - you did," Rachel practically squealed.

Jesse furrowed his brow again, harder. "Okay," he laughed awkwardly. He opened the package and removed the shirt.

"Ooh - so soft," he said. Rachel had wrapped the shirt so that Jesse would have to flip it over to read it.

He flipped it over and opened it all the way up.

"What's it say?" Rachel asked, about ready to scream from anticipation.

"Daddy of 2," Jesse said. "It's cute, babe. Thank - " Jesse started.

"What's the matter?" Rachel asked slyly.

"Who's the second kid?" Jesse asked. He knew there was only one possible explanation, but he'd almost given up hope that that would never happen.

"I imagine we'll find out this summer," Rachel said.

"Oh my God," Jesse whispered. "Oh my God!" He cried louder. He scooped Rachel up and had started to twirl her around before stopping suddenly.

"Oh my God! The fetus!" He gently set Rachel back on the couch. "Sorry - are you okay? How are you feeling? Can I get you anything?"

Rachel laughed. "I'm fine. Just…sit with me a while," Jesse obliged and Rachel leaned her head on his shoulder.

"I'm going to be 42 when this baby is born," Jesse said, stroking Rachel's hair.

"I know - I'll be 40," Rachel sighed. She hadn't said that out loud yet.

"And Olive…" Jesse started.

"She'll be a teenager," Rachel sighed again, harder. "A teenager and a newborn."

"When did you want to tell her?" Jesse asked.

"I think we should wait until I'm in my second trimester. We'll tell her and then we'll tell…everyone else. I've been thinking about how to tell her. I want to get her a Big Sister t-shirt, but I think we should just break the news verbally," Rachel said.

"Break the news?" Jesse asked.

"You know what I mean," Rachel said. "She used to beg us for a younger sibling but I can tell that she's since been under the impression she'd be an only child forever and she loves being the center of our world. I think she'll be excited eventually, but it's going to be a lot for her to take in."

"You're right," Jesse said. "For now, it'll be just between you, me, and this one," he affectionately rubbed Rachel's belly and whispered, "don't tell your sister, okay?"

Rachel laughed.
