The Promise

Friday

Burt removed his baseball cap and rubbed his head as he laughed heartily at Carole's story. "That is hilarious, Honey!" Wiping the tears from his eyes.

"I swear! The little munchkin pulled down his underwear and went right there on the floor! Right in front of the nurses' station." Laughter could be heard around the table from Burt, Carole, Kurt, and Blaine.

They were glad to have had a corner booth in the back of the restaurant. Tonight Burt treated everyone to Breadstix. Instead of their regular Friday night dinner at the house. Kurt leaves for New York on Sunday. He had quit his job at The Lima Bean a week earlier to spend more time with his loved ones before leaving.

"The things that go on at your hospital, Carole. There's never a dull moment. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much. I'm going to miss your stories." Kurt fondly grabbed Carole's hand across the table and held it as he smiled at her.

"I'm going to miss you too, Kurt, so much. With Finn away in the Army, you're heading to New York, the house is going to be so quiet." She took her tissue and dabbed at her eyes. Careful not to smear her makeup.

"Hey, none of that, now. Kurt will come home to visit. We will see Finn soon, and Blaine is still here. Look at them, there's no way they'll stay away from each other." Burt pointed at the boys. "Blaine, we're expecting you to continue coming to Friday night dinner, Kiddo. I know Kurt has got you checking up on me."

Blaine looked up from his lap when he heard his name. "Of course! I'll be there, Burt."

Kurt looked at Blaine cautiously for a moment. "Are you okay?" Kurt whispered. "You're being quiet tonight."

"I'm fine, Kurt." Blaine tipped his head sideways and sighed. Kurt noticed he's holding back tears.

"Well, the bill is paid and we have our dessert to go. Carole and I are heading home. We both have work in the morning. See you at home, Kurt. Don't stay out too late tonight, boys. Blaine, goodnight." Burt patted both boys on the shoulder before leaving.

Carole kissed both boys, "I love you, both. See you later."

"See you later, Carole. Goodnight, Dad. We're going to finish up our cheesecake. I'll be home shortly."

"Goodnight Burt. Goodnight Carole. Thank you for dinner."

"Look here Blaine, there's no need to thank us. We think of you as one of our boys." Burt smiled as he took Carole's hand and led her out of Breadstix.

Kurt and Blaine smiled as they watched them leave the restaurant. Carole turned around and waved goodbye, they waved back at her.

"Your parents are amazing."

"They are." Kurt answered proudly. As he watched them walk out the restaurant holding hands.

Kurt turned to face Blaine. With a concerned look on his face, Kurt asked, "now that we're alone, want to tell me what's bothering you? We promised to communicate better with each other."

"I'm sorry Kurt. I didn't mean to bring everyone down tonight. It just hit me, so suddenly."

"You didn't bring anyone down. What's hit you?"

"It hit me that in a couple days, you're gonna be gone. With this brand new life, brand new friends…brand new everything. And I'm going to be right here……by myself." Blaine affirmed with tears in his eyes.

"Oh, Blaine baby. I'm going to miss you, too! So much. But I promise, you won't be alone. You're going to come visit me, right? We're going to talk all the time." Blaine shook his head, yes. "And I'll come home to see you. Blaine, we're going to be fine." Kurt kissed him on the cheek.

Kurt took a bite of his cheesecake and moaned. Blaine watched him and smiled. 'I'm going to miss this. No one can eat cheesecake and make it look as sexy as Kurt.'

Blaine started to eat his own cheesecake.

"This cheesecake is so luscious and delicious. I may ask you to ship me one once in a while."

"Kurt, you're moving to New York! I'm sure they have the best cheesecakes on the east coast. In the event you don't find it, I'll gladly ship you one or two per month."

Kurt smiled at him and took his hand. "You truly are the best boyfriend ever!"

"I do my best. Let's go home."

Saturday

"Good morning, Dad."

"Morning, Kurt. There's fresh coffee and warm bagels over on the counter. Carole has already left for work and I'm leaving now." Burt opened the door and thought for a moment. He turned around and asked, "Kurt, what time is your flight leaving tomorrow?" So I can set my alarm tonight."

"About that, Dad. Change of plans…."

After eating his breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, Kurt decided to text Sam.

Kurt: Hi Sam. Are you busy today around 10 this morning?

Sam: Hey Kurt. Nope. Playing Call of Duty later with the guys from Glee. What can I do for ya

Kurt: Can you come by today at that time? It's really important

Sam: Sure. See you then

Kurt: Please don't tell Blaine

Sam: Kurt I'm flattered but I'm still straight. And I'm in love with your best friend, Mercedes, remember

Kurt: Haha, very funny. Just be here at 10. Thank you

Sam: I'll be there

Sam left at 11:30. Kurt finished getting ready for his date with Blaine.

At 12:00 pm there was a knock at the door. Kurt opened it.

"Hey! Right on time." Kurt pulled Blaine inside and kissed him tenderly.

"Kuurrtt, If you do that again, we won't leave this house today. By the way, you never told me where we're going. Are you going to tell me now?"

"Blaine, do you trust me?"

"Of course I do."

"We're going to have a picnic, I'll drive." Kurt hugged Blaine, while Blaine smiled into it. Fitting perfectly on Kurt's shoulder.

"It's a great idea. Anything you need me to do?" Blaine asked as he looked around the living room.

Kurt pointed to the picnic basket. "Can you grab that basket and blanket and take it out to my car for me? I'll be right out. I just have to grab something from my bedroom. Here's the keys."

"Sure."

Kurt returned with his jacket over his arm.

"This is Faurot Park. It's one of my favorite places. Quiet and not very crowded. If you're up to it, we can go bike riding afterwards. I thought it'll be a fun way to enjoy this weather and spend the day together."

"This park is amazing, Kurt! How did you ever find it?" Blaine looked around, he's never been here before.

"I used to come here with my mom all the time when I was little. See over there? There's a huge playground for the kids." Kurt pointed toward an area where they could see children running and playing with their parents watching close by on a park bench. There were swings, slides, monkey bars, even boat rides. Older kids playing baseball. There was a basketball goal, too. There's so much for kids to enjoy here.

"After my mom died, my dad would bring me here a couple times a month, when the weather permitted. I think he did it to help me remember my mom. I always felt so close to her when I was here. This place is very special to me. When I got older, I came here on my own." Blaine looked around to take it all in. The leaves have begun to turn colors of red, orange, yellow and brown. Autumn was definitely here.

"It's beautiful here." Blaine empathized.

Kurt spread the blanket out on the grass.

"Come on, let's eat. I made chicken salad." There's chicken salad on sandwiches. He added tomatoes, crisp lettuce, rich cheese, and of course, two slices of flaky croissants. He also packed grapes, orange slices, apples slices, strawberries, pretzels, chocolate dip, caramel dip, and sparkling water.

"This looks so good, Kurt."

"Thank you."

"This is delicious! You know I love croissants. When did you have the time to do all this? I mean, after we fooled around in the car last night, I thought you'd go right to sleep." Blaine winked and a blush spreaded across Kurt's cheeks.

"I did, actually. I went straight to bed. I got up early with Dad this morning. It didn't take long. I went to the store a couple days ago." Kurt admitted while he fixed Blaine's plate, then his own.

"This chicken salad is so good. My boyfriend is so talented." Blaine pulled Kurt onto his lap and wrapped his arms around his waist. Planting soft kisses on the side of his neck.

"Bl…..Blaine." Kurt's eyes were closed as he enjoyed the kisses.

Blaine's voice sounded low and raspy. "How am I going to survive without you? Without your kisses? Without your lovin? Without your cooking, Kurt?"

"I knew you were only with me for my cooking!" Kurt teased as Blaine laughed and popped a chocolate covered strawberry in his mouth.

"That and so many other talents, my dear. So many others. Like last night when you put your m ..."

"LaLaLaLa… Blaine you can't just say things like that! We're in public!" A red faced Kurt pointed out. Blaine laughed until his side started to hurt.

"Oh Kurt, Honey, I'm sorry. I was only teasing." As he kissed Kurt on the forehead. Kurt treasures these tender moments. Blaine's arms wrapped around his waist. Kurt's back pressed up against Blaine's chest.

"We're going to talk to each other all the time. Thank God we both finally have an iPhone. We will FaceTime, text, email and call. Because I'm going to need to hear your voice after dealing with Rachel. We'll even FaceTime from our iPads. If you play your cards right, Mister, maybe you'll get cyber-lucky." Blaine choked on his water. Kurt patted him on the back.

"You okay?"

Blaine shook his head and wiped his mouth with his napkin, "Kurt Hummel! You're offering me phone sex or is that cyber sex?"

Kurt just shrugged his shoulders. "You're going to be the death of me." Blaine confirmed as he held Kurt tighter.

"Seriously though, let's not go to bed angry no matter what. That we will always make time for the things that matter. And this, this here, what we have…" Kurt said as he pointed back and forth from him and Blaine, "matters to me, Blaine. You are what matters to me. Promise me."

"I promise." Blaine held Kurt tightly and rested his chin on his shoulder. Blaine would've promised Kurt the moon if he asked him. There's nothing he wouldn't do for the love of his life. Nothing.

"Kurt, I love you so much."

"I love you, too." Kurt turned around, faced Blaine and kissed him passionately. Blaine laid down on the blanket with Kurt over him.

A couple hours later, they rented bikes and rode around the park. This was a first for them. They had so much fun! They raced each other. Then it happened! Kurt fell off the bike while Blaine was ahead of him. Blaine looked back, saw Kurt on the ground, dusting off his knees. Blaine's heart sank, he quickly turned around and rode towards Kurt.

"Kurt! Are you okay?" A worried Blaine rushed back to check on Kurt.

"I'm fine, it's just a little fall. I ran over a rock, I think. Can you take a look at my rear reflector and see if it's broken or cracked?"

"Sure. Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yeah, nothing hurts."

Blaine got off his bike, walked around Kurt's bike to check it out. Kurt took off like a bat out of hell! Laughter can be heard coming from Kurt. "Last one at the concession stand is buying ice cream!" He shouted over his shoulder.

"Oh, you're going down, Hummel!" Blaine jumped back on his bike and sped off!

"I don't think so!" The race was on!

Kurt won. Blaine paid.

The boys returned their bikes to the rental shop. They got their ice cream and they walked towards the parking lot. The sun was setting, it was time to go home.

Kurt's phone buzzed with a text message from Sam.

Sam: I've mastered it

Kurt: Great!

Kurt was able to put his phone back in his jacket pocket without Blaine noticing. At the moment, Blaine only had eyes for his ice cream.

They got into the Navigator and ate their ice cream in silence. Kurt had a chocolate sundae with nuts and a cherry on top. Blaine had a banana split with sliced banana, garnished with chocolate syrup, whip cream and cherries. They knew their time together was limited. They knew it would be weeks or months before they're together again. Neither wanted to think about that right now. They sat there, being together, enjoying their ice cream. Today was a perfect day.

Once they finished eating, Blaine finally spoke up. "Uh, before we go home, I have something I'd like to give you. You don't have to wear it. You can wear it around your neck if you want. Or keep it in your drawer. It's completely up to you."

He reached into his messenger bag and pulled out a blue velvet pouch. He removed a ring.

"Blaine?" Blaine continued as he looked into Kurt's beautiful eyes.

"This is a promise ring. I know I gave you one last year at Christmas, made out of your favorite gum wrappers. I know you've kept it safe. This one's sturdier and I think it's more your style. It's sterling silver with our names engraved on the inside. It comes with a heart on the outside and the inside."

Kurt is silent for a moment. "Blaine." He murmured with tearful eyes. Kurt was so touched.

"Kurt, I meant everything I said to you when I gave you the ring last year. I'd like to add to that. Kurt, will you accept this ring as a symbol of my faith in our future? I hope that when you look down at this ring you will remember that I have promised to love you forever. These rings are a reminder that we will always be together. Regardless of distance, time or circumstances. We will always be true, loyal and respectful. Most of all, we will love each other forever." Still holding Kurt's hand, Blaine looked into Kurt's gorgeous glasz eyes. He slowly breathed in deeply, then calmly let it out.

"Kurt, I'm going to marry you someday. I intend to keep my promises."

"Wait, you are still going to bake me cookies twice a year, right? Because your cookies…."

"Kurt?" Kurt smirked at Blaine.

"Yes." Kurt said excitedly. "I'm thrilled to wear your ring, Blaine."

Kurt's ring reads….

Blaine (heart) Kurt Love You Forever 2012

Blaine's ring reads….

Kurt (heart) Blaine Love You Forever 2012

"May I?" Blaine asked as he held Kurt's hand.

"Yeah."

He was so emotional and unable to say anything else. Blaine slid the ring on his finger. Kurt took Blaine's ring and slid it on his finger. Blaine took his thumb and gently wiped the tears from Kurt's face. Kurt jumped into Blaine's arms and held him tightly. 'Someday, I'm going to replace these rings with engagement rings.' Kurt promised to himself.

"It's beautiful. Simple, sleek and elegant. I love it! I love you, Blaine."

"I love you, too, Kurt."

"I…I have something for you, too. Compared to your gift, you probably…."

"Kurt…Kurt, I am sure I'm going to love it." Kurt sighed, then reached into the back seat and moved his jacket. Underneath was a large gift bag well hidden. Blaine looked puzzled for a moment. He didn't remember Kurt carrying the bag. Kurt handed the bag to Blaine.

"Go ahead. Open it!"

Blaine pulled out his gift and he laughed out loud! There in his hand was a pillow with their names engraved on it. With the state of Ohio showing Blaine's name and an airplane landing in the state of New York, showing Kurt's name. The writing on the pillow: Distance Means So Little When Someone Means So Much. At the bottom, under their names it goes, Hug This PILLOW Until You Can Hug Me! The pillow is off white with black and red writing. The State of Ohio is red, and the state of New York is black and white. Like their rings, there's a heart in Ohio, and a heart in New York.

"Kurt! I LOVE it!" He sniffed it, "It even smells like you."

"You like it? You're not just saying that because I can get you another gift."

"Kurt, no! I absolutely love this. I am going to sleep with it every night."

"I got one for me, too. I may have borrowed your cologne and sprayed it on mine. It's going on my bed."

"The states, Ohio to New York is everything, Kurt. I truly love my pillow. Thank you."

Blaine kissed Kurt and held him close.

"I can't wait for you to join me in New York next Summer." Kurt whispered in his ear.

"Neither can I."

Sunday

This is Blaine Anderson's favorite time of the year. The weather's warm during the day, but not too warm. The night's are cool. Sweater weather. It isn't hot, nor cold, it's perfect. Just like the man lying next to him. Perfect.

It's still dark out. Kurt and Blaine went to bed quite early last night. They were tired from all the activities they shared throughout the day. Blaine's bedroom window was opened, the cool night air gently caressed their faces. The room still smelled faintly of vanilla and sandalwood. The candle Kurt lit last night. Blaine purchased it because he knew it was Kurt's favorite. The room also smelled of sex. Last night was beautiful. After leaving the park, they had planned to go back to Kurt's house, but somehow ended up at Blaine's. Mr. & Mrs. Anderson are away on an Alaskan cruise. They found themselves with an empty house and all that. They showered and changed into comfortable clothes. Kurt had a bag packed in the car. Something he started doing in high school. Getting drinks thrown at you often would teach you to do that. They changed into sweat pants and t-shirts. Blaine was wearing his red Dalton t-shirt and gray sweats. Kurt was wearing a gray Hummel Tire Shop t-shirt and black yoga pants. Blaine ordered pizza for dinner. They watched Real Housewives on Blaine's TV in his room.

Blaine woke up wrapped around Kurt. Limbs intertwined together. With his hand and head resting on Kurt's chest while feeling his heartbeat. He loved waking up with Kurt in his bed. He looked up at Kurt and smiled. Kurt was still asleep. He was so beautiful like this. Blaine slowly traced his fingers over Kurt's face as if he was trying to memorize every little feature. He moved from his forehead, down to his nose, over to his eyes, he gingerly took his finger and let them feel the sensation of his lips. Oh, how he loved his soft lips. He traced Kurt's well defined jawline, up to his pointed ear, then down to his Adam's apple. Then Blaine started all over again. Barely there touches, so light, so gentle, yet, affecting him so strongly. Blaine was getting aroused just by touch. He watched Kurt's chest rise and fall. His breathing is steady. Kurt, asleep on his back with his arms above his head. The gray and red plaid comforter slid down around Kurt's narrow waist. The sight of Kurt's chest took Blaine's breath away. He could never get tired of staring at his lover. Kurt's body is gorgeous! Lean, lithe, firm and muscular. Still, his pale, flawless skin is soft to the touch.

Kurt slowly opened his eyes and faced Blaine. A smile quickly covered his face. Blaine kissed him tenderly on the lips. Spark exploded throughout their bodies.

"What time is it?" Kurt rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

"Almost 5:00"

"Can't sleep?"

"I know it sounds silly, but I don't want to miss anything with you. I can sleep when you're gone, Kurt. The last few days with you have been perfect. In a few hours you will be on a plane to New York." He started to panic.

Kurt sat up and placed his hands on Blaine's face, and looked him in the eyes. "Blaine, Blaine, Sweetie, look at me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared. I am. I'm scared shitless!"

"You are?"

"Of course."

"I'm scared of not getting into school. I'm scared of not finding a job when I get there. Of getting lost in the city. I'm scared I might not fit in. But Blaine, Sweetie, listen very carefully. There's one thing that doesn't scare me. There's one thing that I'm absolute about." Blaine looked at Kurt with raised eyebrows. "You and me. Us, Kurt & Blaine, or Klaine, as Sue Sylvester so lovingly called us."

"We are going to make it. I meant every word I said to you. I know you meant them, too. We love each other and you're it for me, Blaine. We will get through this. Will it be hard at times? Yes! But nothing worthwhile comes easy. And we are tough! We're tougher than most our age. We've been through so much crap in our lives, we can and we will survive the distance. We've dealt with so much worse. Years of bullying, you were hurt so badly in a gay bash at your Sadie Hawkins Dance that you spent weeks in the hospital recovering. A closeted Neanderthal threatened to end my life after he stole my first kiss. We both transferred schools to feel safe. Losing my mom, and I almost lost my dad. Your parents' absence and aloofness. We got through it all. I thank the Universe or whatever deity that guides my life everyday for letting us find each other, Blaine. Distance? We can do this! As long as we keep talking and tell each other what we need. As long as we're honest with one another. Our rings are a physical reminder of our promise to each other. We've got this, Blaine. We are forever!"

Kurt wrapped his strong arms around Blaine with such tenderness. Blaine held on to Kurt for dear life.

Now it was Blaine's turn to cry. "Kurt, you're it for me, too. I love you so much. You're right. We can do this. We have survived worse."

"Of course we can! We're Kurt & Blaine! We are unstoppable! I love you, so much!" Kurt raised Blaine's hand and pressed a kiss to his ring.

Kurt continued on, "you know when I was fifteen, I'd be in my room, lying there on my bed. My room was in the basement at the time, at our old house. I'd find myself looking up at the ceiling and wondering if I would ever find love. Was there anyone out there who would love ME? I was so unhappy and so alone, Blaine. I mean, I had Mercedes, but she couldn't understand the severity of what I was going through. I also did my best to keep it from her and from my dad. School was hell. Everyday, the bullying never ceased or let up. Glee was just getting started and we were a few misfits trying to create music together."

"At night, I'd lay on my bed and wonder what's the meaning of it all, you know? Why am I here? What's the point? Life just seemed so hard all the damn time. Then I'll close my eyes and I'd imagine a guy interested in me, Kurt Hummel. He'd be a Disney Prince, tall, dark and handsome. He would be dressed immaculate."

"Of course," Blaine interrupted. "I'm sorry, go on."

"He'd ask for my hand and we'd dance all night. We'd fall deeply in love. I would always fall asleep before there was more. It always felt so real! He felt so real. Some nights I would even dream of him. Blaine, you're better than any prince I could ever dream up. I couldn't have pictured a more perfect man than you. You are perfect for me. There's nothing I'd change about you. You are mine! And I am yours. I would gladly endure eight months of distance, to end up spending a lifetime with you."

"Kurrrtt…." Blaine murmured as Kurt kissed the tears from his cheeks.

"Come here, Baby. Let me hold you. Want to be the little spoon?"

Blaine replied in a whisper, "yeah."

"We have a couple hours before we need to get up. Let's go back to sleep." Blaine melted into Kurt's embrace, closed his eyes, and smiled. Kurt kissed his temple and held his man lovingly. Blaine's eyes became heavy. He began to take deep, relaxed breaths. Kurt realized Blaine was fast asleep. He closed his eyes and soon followed.

"Well, thank you Kurt for calling me last night and letting me know you were staying at Blaine's. Good morning, boys."

"Dad, I'm sorry. We fell asleep. When I realized the time later, it was too late to call you."

"Thank goodness Blaine texted me. Otherwise I would've been worried sick."

Kurt mouthed thank you to Blaine. Blaine shrugged his shoulder and mouthed, no problem back to Kurt.

"Breakfast is ready. Are you boys hungry?" Carole asked as she dried her hands on her apron.

"Just coffee for us. We've already eaten. Blaine made blueberry pancakes this morning. I have a few hours before I need to leave."

"So, what have you boys been up to?" Burt inquired as he rose from his chair and walked towards the kitchen.

Kurt and Blaine both blushed thinking about the things they did this morning; in the bed, in the shower. Kurt looked over at Blaine and took his hand. Blaine bashfully looked down.

"Dad, we went bike riding in Faurot Park yesterday."

"We had an amazing time." Blaine stated as he smiled at Kurt.

Burt stared at Kurt, "I didn't even know you still go to that park, Kiddo."

"Yeah Dad, I do. Not often, but when I want to feel close to Mom."

Burt hugged his son. "She'd be so damn proud of you, Son."

As they walked into the kitchen, Burt noticed Kurt and Blaine's joined hands. "Somebody wants to explain to me what's with the matching rings? I know my son did not elope last night!"

Carole looked at their rings and gasped.

"No, no, Dad! Blaine got us promise rings. They're promise rings! Dad, calm down."

Looking at Kurt's finger, "Didn't he give you a promise ring last year?"

"Dad, it was made of paper. Gum wrappers if you must know! This is one I can actually wear. They're not wedding rings, Dad!"

"Could've fooled me. Looks like a wedding ring to me." Burt held up Kurt's hand and observed the ring on his finger.

Burt looked over at Blaine who made himself small in his seat. Eyes cast down on his coffee. Kurt squeezed Blaine's hand under the table and tried to send him a telepathic message…It's okay, he's kidding.

"I might need to get the shotgun out of the garage."

"Dad!"

"Burt, leave them alone and eat your breakfast! Blaine honey, he's kidding. I think the rings are lovely, boys." Carole gave Burt a warning look.

"Thank you, Carole. Kurt replied as he removed his left hand from his father's grasp.

Carole sat down across from Kurt.

Blaine wanted to get away. He asked, "Are you all packed? Anything you need to do? I can go up and help while you spend time with your parents."

"There's very little to do. Most of my things are being shipped tomorrow. I'm only taking a suitcase and a carry-on. I have everything packed except the pillow, a couple outfits on my bed, and my toiletries in my bathroom. That's all I'm taking with me. Thank you, though."

"I'm sure I can handle that. Stay and spend time with your parents. I'll finish packing for you." He looked at Burt and Carole and uttered, "excuse me, please." Blaine was about to kiss Kurt as he stood up from his chair. He quickly decided against it with Burt watching him. He wasn't sure if Burt was kidding or somewhat upset. Maybe a combination of both and he wasn't about to find out. He got up from the table, smiled at Kurt and headed upstairs to finish his packing.

"Burt, look what you did! You've run the poor boy off."

"I was just messing with the kid!" Burt snickered out loud.

"Well you need to let him know." Carole scolded. "Kurt, you two are so sweet together."

"We are, aren't we?" Kurt beamed.

"Pffft!" Came from Burt as he ate his scrambled eggs and turkey bacon.

After they finished their breakfast, Carole started the dishes and Burt suggested he and Kurt go into the living room.

"Kurt, I know you are an adult, now. And I trust you to make the right decisions for your life. Truth is, you've been an adult your whole damn life. You had to deal with so much more than a lot of kids at a much younger age. Losing your mom at such a young age caused you to grow up so quickly. Your mom and I always knew you were special. You've always been a good kid. It's been a pleasure being your dad. I really lucked out with you, Kiddo. Elizabeth would be so proud of you. Going off to New York. No matter what you chose to do, Broadway or designing clothes, or whatever you want to do, you're going to take that city by storm! Remember, you're a Hummel, Son. Don't let anyone push you around. Don't let anyone shit on your dreams. You're going to make it, Kurt. And I can't wait to see the amazing life you create for yourself. The amazing life you're planning to share with Blaine. I mean, you're wearing his ring, did I read that right?"

"He's it for me, Dad. He's the love of my life." Kurt beamed once again as he looked down at the piece of silver wrapped around his finger.

"I know, Son. I knew that when you first brought him home."

"How? We'd just met and we were barely friends at the time."

"A parent knows, Kiddo. I saw the way he looked at you, even then. The way you looked at him when you introduced him to me. What do you young folks call that? Making heart eyes at each other. Burt chuckled as he rested his hand on Kurt's shoulder.

Burt handed Kurt a credit card. "Look here, I want to talk to you about something. This here is your debit card for everyday purchases. Such as food, clothes and utility bills. Use it wisely. Your phone is on my plan, so I'll continue paying for it. You have your insurance card?"

"In my wallet. Thanks Dad, but I'm going to find a job as soon as I get there."

"That's good, but don't stress yourself out about it if you don't find one right away. When you start school in January, I want you to concentrate on your studies. You have your whole life to work. And you've been working at the garage since you were eight. I've been preparing for this moment for eighteen years. As a business owner and Congressman, I can afford to send my kid to college. Carole and I can afford to send both our boys to college. If Finn decides he wants to go back to school, we will support him as well.

"I also have this." He handed Kurt an envelope. "Now this here is all the information to access your college fund. Your mom started it when you were born. I kept it up. Your grandparents even added to it on your birthday and Christmas every year. This is to pay for your college tuition, books, materials, even rent and furniture. Since you're not staying in a dorm. You can access the account online. Be smart. I'm trusting you to use it wisely, Kurt. I will be checking the account to make sure you're not being too extravagant. I want you to have everything you deserve, Son. Your mom wanted this for you, too. Don't forget to send your grandparents a note once you're settled in and thank them also."

Kurt wiped the tears from his eyes with the back of hand.

"You truly are the world's best father! I am so grateful for everything you've done for me, is doing for me. I love you, Dad. I won't let you down."

Burt pulled his son in for a bear hug. "Love you too, Kiddo." He removed his cap and wiped the tears from his eyes. "Love you, too."

Two Hours Later

Kurt looked up at the sky as he took his luggage to Blaine's car. It's partially cloudy today. It's also time to leave.

"Here, I packed you a little lunch, Kurt. In case you're hungry on your way to Columbus. Blaine, this one's for you. I know your parents aren't home much. If you're bored, and don't want to be alone, you're always welcome to join us. Always! Not just on Friday nights, you hear?" Blaine embraced Carole warmly.

"Thank you, and thank you Burt." Burt patted him on the shoulder. Then pulled Blaine in for a hug.

"Thank you, Carole for everything. I couldn't have chosen a better woman for my dad, for me. I know you'll take good care of him. I know you'll make sure he stick to his diet. I love you. When you talk to Finn, please tell him to call me." Kurt hugged Carole affectionately.

"I will, honey. I love you, too, Kurt. I'll see that Finn calls you." They held onto each other for a few seconds as Carole gently rubbed his back. Kurt closed his eyes as he inhaled her perfume. He really did love Carole. It's as if his own mother sent this wonderful woman to them. She was an amazing wife, mother and stepmother.

"Kurt, it's time to go.." Blaine announced as he walked towards the car.

"Goodbye, Dad. I'll call you when I board and I'll call when I land, I promise. I'm taking a cab to the apartment I'm sharing with Rachel. I programmed my address in both your phones. I also left it on the refrigerator. The boxes in the garage are already labeled and ready to ship. You just have to take them to the UPS store tomorrow."

"Kurt, we got it. C'mon, give your old man another hug." Kurt hugged his dad once again.

In a low tone, Burt murmured to Kurt. "Goodbye, Son. Some might think this is just you going off to school. But I know differently. This is you going home…home to New York. You were always too big for Lima. You were always meant for greatness." Burt wiped his eyes again. "But I expect to see you here for Christmas. No excuses, I'll take care of the tickets."

"Of course, Dad."

"Blaine, kidding aside, I expect to see you around here all the time."

"Yes, Sir." Blaine answered as he got into the driver's side.

"And none of that Sir stuff. See you boys and be safe."

Kurt waved goodbye from the passenger's seat. Blaine started the car and slowly backed out of the driveway.

"I don't understand why you wouldn't let me take you to Columbus."

"It's faster on the train. It's okay, really, Blaine. It will be easier this way."

Kurt sends a quick text message.

Kurt: On my way!

Sam: Great

They arrived at Amtrak in ten minutes. As they exited the car, Blaine grabbed Kurt's luggage from the trunk. Blaine saw Sam a little ways up on the platform. Confused, he turned to Kurt, "what's Sam doing here? Kurt, what's going on?"

"Blaine, I realized you are having a harder time with my leaving than you're letting on. I saw a glimpse of that over the weekend. I asked Sam to help me as I sing this song to you. My parents used to play it on their record player all the time. I want you to listen to the words because I mean them from the bottom of my heart. This is my promise to you."

Sam had his guitar. Kurt walked over and stood next to him near the platform.

Kurt gave Sam a nod to start. Kurt then stated, "we slowed the arrangements down just a little bit. The name of this song is called Babe."

Babe

Babe, I'm leaving, I must be on my way

The time is drawing near

My train is going, I see it in your eyes

The love, the need, your tears

But I'll be lonely without you

And I'll need your love to see me through

Please believe me, my heart is in your hands

And I'll be missing you.

Blaine couldn't believe this. He smiled into his hands. When? How? Kurt is always so full of surprises. God, I love this man!

You know it's you Babe

Whenever I get weary and I've had enough

Feel like giving up

You know it's you Babe

Giving me the courage and the strength I need

Please believe that it's true

Babe, I love you.

Blaine is blown away. Kurt is singing Styx! To him! In public…in Lima, Homophobic Ohio! Sam sang background vocals.

You know it's you Babe

Whenever I get weary and I've had enough

Feel like giving up

You know it's you Babe

Giving me the courage and the strength I need

Please believe that it's true

Babe, I love you.

Blaine tried to stop the tears from falling to no avail. A few people stopped and watched the performance.

Babe, I'm leaving, I'll say it once again

Somehow try to smile

I know the feeling we're trying to forget

If only for a while

But I'll be lonely without you

And I'll need your love to see me through

Please believe me, my heart is in your hands

And I'll be missing you

Babe, I love you.

Babe, I love you.

Ohhh, Babe.

Kurt looked directly at Blaine. So much love in his voice. By the end of the song, Kurt's voice cracked just a little from so many emotions. The small crowd clapped enthusiastically. Blaine looked surprisingly around as if he'd forgotten others were present. People scattered and went about their day. Blaine embraced Kurt and clung to him firmly. "I will treasure this memory for as long as I live, Kurt Hummel. You always zig when I think you're about to zag and I just love that about you."

"So, you liked it?"

"Kurt, are you kidding me? I freaking LOVED it! That was amazing!" He hugged Kurt tightly. After a while, they broke away and Blaine glanced around.

Sam walked over, "So how did I do?"

"Sam, you did great! You sounded amazing! Thanks for everything. You're a good friend. You ever need anything, please let me know, I mean it."

"I'll be sure to take you up on that."

Kurt hugged Sam and whispered in his ear "please look out for Blaine. Don't hesitate to call me on his behalf. I owe you, big time."

"Don't worry Kurt. He's going to be fine."

"Sam, that was great, man!" Blaine commented to Sam.

There was a last call to board for Columbus.

Kurt wrapped his arms around Blaine and whispered, "I have to go."

"Blaine starred into his boyfriend's eyes, "I know. Be sure to call me tonight when you get to New York."

"I will." Kurt assured Blaine.

"Thank you, Kurt, for the song. You don't know how much that means to me. I love you so much."

"You're welcome. I love you, too. I'll call you tonight." Kurt gave him a peck on the lips.

He turned and started to walk toward his train. He could feel Blaine's eyes on his back. Just steps away from entering the train, he stopped in his tracks. He turned around, hurriedly walked back and mumbled, "to hell with everyone." Kurt kissed Blaine with everything in him. Blaine hungrily kissed him back. Kurt grabbed the front of Blaine's sweater. Blaine held his face in his hands. They kissed deeply. Kurt inhaled Blaine's scent.

Blaine broke the kiss first. "Go, Sweetheart. Don't miss your train." Blaine gave Kurt one last peck on the cheek.

Kurt took a few seconds and stared into Blaine's teary, amber eyes. Then he turned around and left. He boarded his train. Found a window seat and waved goodbye at his boyfriend and friend. They waved back.

Sam began to walk towards Blaine's car. He took a few steps and realized Blaine wasn't next to him. He walked back where Blaine was rooted on the spot. Watching Kurt's train until it was out of sight.

"C'mon Blaine, my dad dropped me off. Let's go to the Lima Bean. You can have your coffee and I'll get a hot chocolate. We have that Student Council meeting on Thursday. We should discuss that."

"Sure, Sam."

Sam put his arm around Blaine's shoulder and led him to the car.

Later that night

Blaine was lying on his bed with his EarPods in his ears, listening to music.

His phone rang…FaceTime from Kurt.

Kurt: Hi Blaine.

Blaine: Kurt…you made it!

Kurt is wearing Blaine's Dalton t-shirt.

Kurt: Thank you for the t-shirt. By the way, you look so hot in mine.

Blaine is wearing Kurt's Hummel Tire Shop t-shirt. Blaine blushed bashfully.

Blaine: Not as hot as you in mine.

Kurt: How was your day?

Blaine: Sam and I went to the Lima Bean and worked on a proposal for our Student Council meeting on Thursday. But let's talk about that later. How was your flight?

Kurt: The flight was fine. You won't believe who I saw at JFK when I landed….

Kurt continued to tell him about his journey today. Blaine smiled and listened attentively.

Unbeknown to Kurt, Blaine recorded him singing earlier. He listened to Babe every night before falling asleep.

10 Years Later Autumn 2022

"Blaine, don't forget to pack your blue leather jacket."

"Thanks for reminding me. I'll grab it and be right down."

They live in a condo on the Upper West Side. It's 4 bedrooms, and 3 bathrooms. They wanted their parents to have their own room when they visited. With Blaine's trust fund and Kurt's success, they were able to find this gem across from Central Park.

Blaine dug into the back of their walk-in closet for his jacket. He grabbed it and something fell off the shelf and onto the floor. He looked down and saw it. The pillow Kurt gave him when he was seventeen years old. Ten years ago. Where has the time gone? They graduated college. Blaine from Juilliard and Kurt from Parsons. Blaine was recently selected to become the new conductor for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He had joined the orchestra as a violinist right out of Julliard. Kurt is the owner and CEO of Kurt Hummel. He started at Vogue. He learned so much there, after two years, he decided to strike out on his own.

They finally have time to go away. Just the two of them. They were so busy with school and getting their careers off the ground, they just couldn't find the time to get away alone. Blaine is taking Kurt on a long awaited honeymoon. They're spending ten days in Greece. The timing is perfect for both men. Fashion Week is over and Blaine has time off before starting his new position next month. Kurt's clothing line is doing extremely well. He currently has stores in Manhattan, Chicago, and Los Angeles. He also has an online store and ships worldwide. He's looking to expand to San Francisco, Miami, and Paris in the next few years.

Blaine picked up the pillow and sat down on the bed with it. Remembering the day they exchanged gifts. The day Kurt left for New York. The promise rings, the pillows, the song. Later on, Blaine surprised Kurt by putting his recording of Babe inside his pillow and Teenage Dream inside Kurt's. It was the first song he sang to Kurt. He found a company in New York that adds your favorite voice recording to pillows. He squeezed it and the music started.

He closed his eyes and let his mind drift back to the past. He could see Sam playing the intro on his guitar. Kurt began to sing while staring into Blaine's soul. He felt so loved in that moment. His love for Kurt has grown exponentially since then. When Blaine joined Kurt in New York, they shared an apartment in between both their schools. Just the two of them. They found their own place before Blaine moved in. Their walk was thirty minutes in opposite directions. Their train ride was even shorter. Two years after Blaine moved to New York, Kurt proposed. They were married one year later. After Kurt graduated and at the start of Blaine's senior year. They married in Ohio. On the grounds at Dalton, the place where it all started.

Yes, it was an Autumn wedding. The trees were bursting with colors of red, orange, yellow, brown and green. It was a beautiful ceremony with family and close friends in attendance. The former Warblers and New Directions provided the music. Mercedes sang At Last as they walked down the aisle with their parents.

Blaine's brother, Cooper was his Best Man. They became close friends when they both moved to New York. Cooper, who once said Broadway was dead, became a Broadway star when he was cast in Waitress. He's been working steadily since. Kurt chose his friend, Elliott to be his Best Man. Elliott is the front man for a popular band and is on tour.

There were four memorial seats with loved ones' pictures placed on the chairs. Kurt's mom, Elizabeth, Kurt's brother, Finn. Finn passed away a few months after Kurt left for New York. Blaine's maternal grandparents, Mr. Gabriel & Mrs. Inez Santos.

Present Day

Listening to Kurt sing always moved him. A tear rolled down his face as he remembered that day at the train station. Remembering the days and weeks that followed. Missing Kurt, longing for him, even. But they kept their promise to each other. They texted good morning daily, called in the evening to talk about their day. Then FaceTimed each other when they got into bed. Some days they talked for hours, other days it was just a few minutes. Sometimes, it was just to hear the other's voice for a couple seconds. They left each other encouraging voice messages to get them through the loneliness and stress from their studies. They had spent Christmas break, Valentine's Day and Blaine's graduation together.

The song ended.

"Daddy? Papa says you need to hurry or you're going to miss the plane. Are you crying?"

"Sweetheart, these are happy tears." Blaine commented as she climbed onto his lap and wiped his tears away with her little thumb.

"Tell Papa I'm coming. Can you do that for me?"

"Yes Daddy. No more crying, though." Aaliyah ran from the room.

Blaine took that moment to place the pillow on their bed. He glanced around the room, with his jacket in his arm, as he closed the bedroom door.

"Hey, Kiddo, you okay?" Burt hugged his son in law.

"I'm fine, Dad. Good to see you! You too, Mom! I hope the kids won't be too much trouble."

"Our grandkids are no trouble at all. In fact, they're little angels." Carole announced as she wiped Caden's mouth. Caden Finn Anderson- Hummel was eighteen months old and the spitting image of Kurt at that age. Chestnut hair and a big smile for everyone. Sitting in his highchair eating his oatmeal and grinning at his grandma. While Aaliyah Elizabeth Anderson-Hummel, age four, looked so much like Blaine. Dark curls and all. She had Kurt's mannerism, though. She was very protective of her lil brother. Like Papa, she took care of everyone. Like Daddy, she's shown an interest in music. Blaine has started giving her piano lessons recently.

After they lost Finn, they all became extremely close; closer, if that's possible. They all learned they've got to hold the people they love close to them no matter what. The Anderson-Hummel's make sure to travel back to Ohio at least three times a year. Burt and Carole come to NYC to visit them as often as they can. Kurt started calling Carole mom. It was just a matter of time before Blaine followed, calling them mom and dad. They were more his parents than the Anderson's were. Blaine loved his parents. He had accepted that they would never be very affectionate with him.

"Kids, give Daddy and Papa a hug. Behave for your grandma and grandpa, okay. We will be sure to bring you a present back!" Kurt shouted as he checked one last time to make sure their tickets, passports and IDs were in his messenger bag.

"I'll be good, I promise!" Aaliya said confidently.

"Da-Da, kiss! Papa, kiss!" Caden lifted his arms to be picked up. Kurt lifted Caden out of his chair and gave him a sloppy kiss on his fat cheek. Blaine kissed him on the opposite cheek. Caden laughed with glee!

"Boys, you need to get going. The car is here and traffic is a mess." Burt warned them.

Blaine picked up Aaliyah and they both kissed her on her cheeks, professing, "we love you Babygirl!"

"I'm not a baby, Papa!" Aaliyah corrected him as he put her down.

Blaine turned around, remembering something. "Oh, Mom, don't forget Cooper and Quinn are coming by to watch the kids while you and Dad go out to dinner Friday night. If you're overwhelmed and need a break, just call them, they will gladly take them for a night or two. Since they're expecting, they need the practice. Also Rachel and Jesse are taking the kids to the park and brunch on Sunday around noon. They love playing with their son, Julian."

"Uncle Coop coming!" An excited Aaliyah squealed. The kids loved their Uncle Cooper and his wife, Auntie Quinn. Cooper met Quinn at Kurt and Blaine's wedding.

Rachel and Jesse St. James became close on the theater circuit.

"Boys, we know. Kurt gave us both a typed, double spaced print out of their schedule. Of all your contact information, including hospitals, emergency numbers, their pediatrician, Cooper's and Rachel's. Now go! Do not miss your flight! Burt, will you get these two out of here, please?"

Burt came over and ushered them out the door. "We love you, boys. Now go and have a good time! You two work so hard and we're so damn proud of you! You deserve this honeymoon. We won't let anything happen to our amazing grandkids." Burt assured them while Carole shook her head agreeing.

"Okay, we're going!" Kurt grabbed Blaine's hand. And led him out the door. Blaine quickly shouted, "Bye everyone!"

Thirteen hours later, they were in their private villa they're renting in Tragaki, Zakynthos, Greece. But Greece is seven hours ahead of NYC. It's 5:00 am the next day. They called the kids as promised. They knew they were asleep. They talked to Burt since it was 10 pm in New York. He assured them the children were fine. They sent pictures so Carol could show Aaliyah in the morning. They will call again later. Though it's 5:00 am in Greece, they decided to take a nap. They will tour the house and grounds when they get up.

"Happy Anniversary, Kurt. Are you enjoying yourself?" Blaine asked as he handed Kurt a champagne flute.

"Thank you! Happy 6th Anniversary, Blaine. I am! Can you believe we've been married for six years and together twelve? This has been some of the happiest days of my life. Being here in Greece with you is just a bonus. A beautiful bonus nonetheless! Blaine, being your husband and the children's father is everything I've ever wanted. I love you, Babe."

"Love you, too, Kurt." He looked down at his platinum wedding band. "The day you married me was the happiest day of my life. Seeing you walk down the aisle towards me, I couldn't keep it together. I tried, I was a crying mess. You looked so beautiful in your Kurt Hummel tux. I couldn't believe at last, we were getting married. Alexa, play At Last by Etta James."

The music started. Blaine put his drink down and asked Kurt, "may I have this dance?"

Kurt put his glass down on the table. "Why yes. Yes you may." Blaine led him to the center of the deck and pulled him close.

The sun began to set over them. "This is the most spectacular sunset I've ever seen, Blaine. Thank you for this trip."

"Anything for you, Sweetheart."

Their bodies came together with familiarity. Blaine's hands on Kurt's back. Kurt's hand around Blaine's neck. Blaine started singing along softly. Their bodies moved to the beat. Chest to chest, they moved together beautifully. Kurt's glasz eyes glistened with tears. Blaine smiled so bright as he set his head over Kurt's shoulder. They continued to dance. Both lost in the music. Blaine singing along with the song. Their love washed over them completely.

"Just when I think that it's impossible to love you any more than I already do, you prove me wrong." Blaine's voice was raspy and sexy af.

"My Disney Prince. You take my breath away." Kurt whispered against Blaine's ear.

"After all this time?"

"Always"

They broke apart and roared with laughter. "Oh my God, Dumbledore? Seriously, Blaine?"

"You said 'always'! I guess that makes you Snape!" Blaine blurted out.

"You take that back! That hair! That wardrobe!" Kurt began to tickle Blaine. They laughed for a while longer. Then Blaine kissed Kurt.

"We are so cheesy!" Kurt claimed.

"You love it!"

"I do!" Kurt admitted as he returned to Blaine's arms.

Blaine leaned in and kissed Kurt sensuously. So soft….yet, his entire body was tingling with desire. They tasted the champagne in each other's mouth. The kiss was soft at first, then with an intensity, he parted Kurt's lips. His tongue slid into Kurt's mouth. Kurt bit him on the lips, sending tremors throughout Blaine's body. He became weak in the knees. Kurt held him closer. Breathing heavily as their lips pressed together. The kiss was fervent and filled with desire.

"Blaine, I…" They laid down on the outdoor sectional. Blaine unbuttoned Kurt's shirt. The song was still playing on loop.

"I know, I know. I love you too, Mr. Anderson- Hummel." Blaine uttered so softly.

Ohh yeah yeah

You smile

You smile

Oh and then the spell was cast

And here we are in heaven

For you are mine

At last
