I've been inspired by many rewrite fics which made me want to make my own. I don't know how often I will update but I'll try my best to deliver. I've been a Pokémon fan ever since the DP era and it's definitely one of my top five most preferred franchises.

Disclaimer: I don't own Pokémon at all.

Hope you guys enjoy reading this text.

Within the southwestern portion of the Kanto Region lies a rural and small settlement known as Pallet Town. This remote area is surrounded by white houses, dirt trails and wide, open lush areas. Just in the middle of the night, upstairs in one of the white houses a young was watching a Pokémon battle live on TV upstairs in one of. His name is Ash Ketchum, a ten-year-old who's ready to start his journey tomorrow morning, which will also the day he will receive his Starter Pokémon from the most renowned Pokémon Professor in Kanto, Samuel Oak. Find out as to how his journey to be the very best unfolds.

"I can't believe the time has finally come for me to become a Pokémon trainer," Ash cheered in excitement. "I hereby declare to all of the people and Pokémon of the world that I'll become a trainer worthy enough to become a Pokémon Master. Suddenly the door opened and the boy's mother Delia Ketchum walked in.

"Ash, go to bed. It's late and you should know better since you will be off adventuring tomorrow," his mother scolded much to the boy's displeasure. Then she turned thoughtful and went on to ask him a question that has been on her mind these last few days. "Say, have you figured out which Pokémon you will be choosing from Professor Oak?" Ash turned his head away from the TV and met his mother's eyes.

"Actually, I haven't given it much thought, all three of them are awesome, so it's very difficult to pick just one."

"Whoever you choose will be the best partner for you, I'm sure of it," she encouraged. "Anyways it's time for you to go to sleep, I'll be preparing everything you might need tomorrow, okay." She received a nod from him and left the room. Ash quickly changed into his blue and yellow pajamas, relaxing on his bed and slowly falling asleep.

The next morning, Ash is awakened by the loud ringing of his Voltorb alarm clock. He stared at the clock's direction so he can check what time it was. Luckily the time is 7:07. He took off his pajamas and swiftly put on his adventure attire. It consisted of green fingerless gloves, a black t-shirt under his blue and white short-sleeved vest, light blue jeans, white sneakers and finally a red and white cap with a conventional green L in center. Immediately he left the room and went downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast. So he made himself a delicious sandwich and a glass of orange juice. After eating, he sauntered to the front door, turning the handle and left the house.

The stroll to Professor Oak's Lab would last ten minutes, so he thoughtfully stared at the sky and considered which starter to choose. The first Kanto Starter is the grass type Bulbasaur, a blue-green Pokémon standing on its four thick legs with three sharp claws at the end of each of them, red eyes with white pupils, and a green plant bulb on its back. Next is the fire Pokémon Charmander, a bipedal orange lizard with blue eyes whose belly and soles are cream-colored. The most remarkable thing about this creature is the fire burning at the tip of its delicate tail. Last but not least is Squirtle, a blue bipedal water type Pokémon with purple eyes and a long tail that curls inward at the end. The species are known for having their bodies encased in robust shells, which is brown above and pale yellow below. He liked all of them, yet he could only pick one. After thinking long and hard, he made his decision to go with Squirtle.

After getting out of his thoughts, his mind recorded the fact that he was climbing some stairs, which meant that he had reached the largest residence in Pallet Town, Professor Oak's research lab. His first instinct was to go inside and walk upstairs to the research floor. Entering the research floor, he saw various machines for Pokémon testing and various chemicals that were neatly arranged on the table. Nearby, a blue chair stands behind the professor's status screen and computer, the first of which indicated a Pokémon's well-being along with its power, while the second was being used to document his examinations, in addition to acting as a videophone. It gives the professor the privilege to be in contact with other professors and trainers. Beside the computer is where the Poké Ball Transfer Machine resided, a tool the Professor uses to transport Pokémon over to their trainers in a Pokémon Center. The room was also made up of a book shelf, a desk with a lamp, a brown couch, a drawing board and a lamp that was hanging from the ceiling.

When he finished looking around, Ash stumbled upon the fact that he wasn't alone in the room, the sight before him filled his mind with anxiety. There was a boy of the same age kneeling on the floor with one leg in front of a Squirtle. In fact, it's not just any boy trying to befriend the blue creature, it's someone he knows all too well, namely Gary Oak. He has brown eyes and brown spiky hair. His attire consists of a purple long-sleeved shirt, a necklace and a pair of dark gray pants. From a distance, with a big smile on his face, stood his rival's grandfather Professor Oak, an old gray-haired man dressed in a white lab coat, a light maroon shirt, brown loafers and sand-colored trousers. The Squirtle is apparently very jovial due to it responding to Gary's caring nature with a friendly embrace as if it never wanted to let go, prompting Gary to flash a cheerful smile and return the hug.

Ash hadn't seen Gary smile like that since the disaster four years ago. An unfortunate car accident took the lives of his parents, leaving Gary an orphan. But luckily for him, his grandfather decided to take care of him. Still, the accident left Gary emotionally traumatized and he never recovered from it. Ash himself understood what it felt like to lose someone in his life. A year prior to the mishap his father passed away from a terminal illness, leaving him and his mom alone in this world. At that point, Gary did everything to cheer Ash up and it sure did take a while before he succeeded.

While Ash attempted to do the same for him, Gary did not want his sympathy and ended their friendship immediately. He resented the other children because all of their parents were still living unlike his who passed away. He isolated himself from everyone and only hung around his grandfather's lab. Every so often Ash would pass by Oak's corral to play with Pokémon and most of the times Gary would be there too, though he kept his distance. Ash tried talking to him several times but to no avail, so he gave up trying to get Gary back to his original self.

He was brought back out of his thoughts as Gary got up, standing still, while letting go of Squirtle. Feeling that someone was watching him, Gary turned in Ash's direction locking eyes with him, causing the blue turtle and professor to take in Ash's presence with the professor smiling upon his arrival. However the same couldn't be said for Gary, who glared at his rival with eyes so fierce that Ash almost felt that they could peer into his soul. The atmosphere grew tense and no one said a word until a sneer had formed on Gary's face.

"If it isn't my old friend Ashy boy, how are you? Did you come to see me get my Starter Pokémon." Gary provoked in order to get a reaction from Ash, who didn't respond. He continued. "Listen carefully because you won't like what I have to say. Thing is, I managed to get the only Pokémon left in the lab, so I'm sure you can understand what that means for you. The other two trainers came before me and as luck would have it they didn't pick the starter I desired, which is this Squirtle you see here behind me."

"Wait, so that means there aren't anu Starter Pokémon to choose from" Ash questioned dispirited. Gary said nothing and only smiled with satisfaction written on his face.

"Actually Ash, there is still one more Pokémon left." Professor Oak decided it was time to intervene.

"What!" both Ash and Gary shouted in unison. Before they could inquire anything about the unforeseen revelation, the elderly man dug into the pocket of his lab coat and held out a Poké Ball for them both to inspect.

"I must warn you Ash, I only intended to give this Pokémon away to the last of the four trainers that were to appear today," the professor explained with a serious expression. "The creature inside isn't fond of humans and I caught it just a few weeks ago. It's up to you if you really want this," Ash mused for a few seconds and nodded. The professor smiled and handed him the Poké Ball. "Take these Poké Balls as well as this Pokedex, they will be useful for your journey." Professor Oak handed him five Poké Balls and a Pokédex.

"Okay, it's finally time for me to begin my Pokémon journey." Ash pressed the button on the front of the Poké Ball, enlarging it. Everyone was feeling the suspense even though Professor Oak already knows what Pokémon is inside and at last Ash held out the Poke Ball in front of him, unleashing it with a blinding flash of light. The Pokémon materialized, unveiling itself as a yellow two-legged mouse with two brown horizontal lines on its back and a lightning bolt-shaped tail. It also had a red circle on each cheek as well as long, pointed ears with black tips and brown eyes. The Pokémon looked at him with bewilderment.

"Ash, this is Pikachu." Professor Oak introduced. The said boy was baffled and didn't know what to make of the rodent but was happy to finally have a Pokémon. Gary is annoyed that Ash has a special starter and he doesn't. Ash tried to pet Pikachu like Gary did earlier with his partner, however it didn't go well because he was electrocuted by the rodent when he got close, much to his rival's amusement.

"Seems like your Pokémon doesn't want to be your partner, that just proves how bad of a trainer you are." Gary ridiculed. "You can never beat me if you can't befriend your own starter."

"You know what Gary, I've sick of you and your attitude," Ash retorted, glaring at him fiercely. "You and I will battle now, I will prove you wrong by winning."

"Alright then, let's find out who's the better trainer between us," Gary proclaimed, welcoming Ash's challenge. "Your Pikachu may have the advantage owing to the fact that it's an electric type, but I know Squirtle will take that mouse down."

"Alright you two, let's go outside where you two can have your match." Professor Oak suggested. Both trainers nodded and everyone left the research floor.

Outside at the Oak Corral, the environment consisted of separate areas that were suitable for different kinds of Pokémon such as deserts, grassy terrains and several lakes were present. As of this moment, Ash and Gary were standing on an empty lawn, preparing for their battle, while the professor watched from the sidelines. They were both discussing strategies with their starters or rather Gary was strategizing and Ash was arguing with his disobedient Pikachu. Eventually they both turned around facing each other while standing a few feet away with their respective starter in front of them.

"I'm taking you down today Gary." Ash proclaimed while his Pikachu kept a bored countenance, clearly not in the mood for a fight.

"Oh yeah, don't forget to acknowledge me as the superior trainer after this beatdown." Gary replied and nodded to his Starter, making the Pokémon assume it's fighting stance.

"I'll be the referee for this match," the Professor announced. " This is a one on one battle and the winner is declared only if he manages to defeat his opponent's Pokémon, is that clear?" Both sides eagerly nodded. "Good, now start the match." In an instant Ash gave an order upon hearing those words.

"Let's go Pikachu, it's time to attack," But nothing happened, his Pikachu just stood still in place. "Come on Pikachu, use thunder shock." Pikachu glanced at him for a few seconds and disregarded his command.

"Guess I'll have to start to this battle myself, go on Squirtle, use tackle," Gary commanded.

Squirtle responded to his trainer's command by rushing towards Pikachu, who jumped out of the way. The turtle came to a halt and his trainer ordered him to use the same move again, causing him to dash towards Pikachu once more, while the rodent reacts the same way and dodges. Gary was starting to lose his patience.

"Come on Ash, face me head on instead of running away like a coward."

"Pikachu, please listen to me." Ash pleaded, but to no avail Pikachu kept on ignoring him. The rodent turned his head to face him, only to be greeted by his trainer's saddened eyes.

"Take advantage of this distraction Squirtle, use tackle."

Squirtle heeded and lunged forward. Pikachu was completely oblivious to the impending attack this time and turned to look at his adversary, who struck him in the face with his shoulder. He was hit hard and knocked off his feet, while sliding cross the field. The pair of Gary and Squirtle were grinning at the rodent who was lying on his back, while Ash became worried for his partner.

"Pikachu, are you okay?"

The mouse managed to get up and his face contorted with rage towards the smiling turtle. Pikachu begins to glow yellow and unleashes his thunder shock attack on his opponent so he could return the favor. The lightning bolt succeeded in catching up to Squirtle, shocking him with electricity.

"Squirtle!" Gary called out in worry.

Squirtle was left standing on one leg, visibly taking a large amount of damage from this attack. In spite of that, he was unable retaliate because another thunder shock was heading for him, hitting him once again with more intensity than the previous one. Sadly for Squirtle, the lightning bolt struck long enough for him to lose his consciousness.

"Squirtle is unable to battle, Pikachu is the winner, therefore the victor of this match is Ash." Professor Oak stated. Ash smiled at that and dashed towards his Pikachu, who again responded by electrocuting him. Gary's eyes were shadowed when he recalled Squirtle into his Poké Ball, unable to comprehend as to why he lost. He approached Ash and Pikachu, glaring at them.

"You want to know something Ash, you didn't win," Ash was taken aback by this but Gary continued on. " To tell you the truth, the winner of this battle is Pikachu and I know it's hard for you to admit that but a trainer who can't work together with his Pokémon is not a trainer at all," Ash gasped at that and tried to contemplate on whether Gary was being sincere or a sore loser, he begrudgingly came to terms with it being the former. Professor Oak continued to observe in silence. "Guess it's time for me to leave, listen carefully Ash, I'm going to train together with my Pokémon harder than ever for the purpose of avenging our loss today. You better be prepare yourself because next time it won't end the same way," He then turned to look at his grandfather. "I will be going now Gramps, so smell you guys later." His grandfather nodded and his grandson gave Ash one last glance and then slowly began walking away.

"I'll be waiting for our next match and when that day arrives I'm going to win." Ash insisted with resolve while Gary kept on walking, slowly fading out of sight.

The hollow victory had opened Ash's eyes, making him more determined than ever to be the very best, knowing very well that Gary will be one of his biggest obstacles in his path to becoming a Pokémon Master.

That's the end of this chapter. I thought that it was crazy that Ash and Gary only battled once before their eventual showdown at the Silver Conference, so that's why I made them have a battle now.

Ash won't be catching any legendaries in this fic because it would feel cheap and weird.

I may somewhat involve some game storylines.

For every region Ash will have between 8-13 Pokémon excluding Pikachu.

That's all for now. Feel free to leave a review and add it to your favorites list.
