Hello there, I had been planning to do this for a while but this here is my first Fanfiction. I hope you can enjoy it as I have been wracking my brain for a decent start for quite some time.
For this story, I will follow the Types and Learnsets from Gen VIII since it just makes the most sense to follow modern rules. Besides that, I took some liberties like aging up the characters. According to Junichi Masuda during a fan meeting, Hilbert, Hilda, Bianca, and Cheren are fourteen years old in Black and White which is the age I use in this Fanfiction since it makes much more sense than letting a ten-year-old out into the world.
That is all, and now I hope you can enjoy my Fanfiction.
Chapter 1: A rough start
It quickly became clear to me that I woke up in a place that I wasn't supposed to be in. How, you ask? Well, the first hint was that I noticed my mattress underneath me was missing, replaced by something harder and rather uncomfortable. My second hint was all the grass around me and hearing the birds chipper in the trees around me. I was pretty sure that I did not live in a greenhouse, no even then there would be any justified reason for all these trees. I was definitely in some kind of forest. My final hint was that I was staring right into the sky as soon as I opened my eyes. I was not rich but I had at least enough to put a roof above my head. My conclusion to this? Wherever I was this was not my room. Sitting up I had a look around me. It was a clearing in the middle of a forest, without a hint of civilization around, without a clue of how I got there.
Okay, first I should stop myself from freaking out… which was easier than I thought. Just by taking a few deep breaths all the anxiety that has been bubbling up inside me for the past few seconds were gone as if a bubble had burst. Next, I decided to check my body functions to make sure that everything was in order.
When I tried to stand up there was no problem, in fact, my body worked too well. I was effortlessly able to push myself up. Otherwise, I felt extremely good as well and even the usual side effects of my lack of sleep were gone. During my check-up, I also noticed that I was not wearing what I did when I went to bed… thank god. Wandering around a field with nothing but trunks on would be impractical and embarrassing.
Instead, I was dressed in an unzipped red jacket with a white interior, a black long-sleeved shirt, dark blue pants, and red zip-up boots with gray socks. I normally wasn't into bright colors but I must say that the red jacket didn't look too bad. Still, they weren't my clothes and I have no idea how I got them.
Sighting, I decided to let it go for now and first find my way back into civilization. It might be uncomfortable but not that concerning. And so I started to wander into a random direction of the forest not having a single clue in which direction civilization was.
Time continued to pass fast as I kept walking and walking for what felt like hours. Strangely enough, even after all this walking, I didn't feel the slightest bit tired. Still, I decided to rest briefly when I came across a small stream. The water in it was clear enough for me to see my reflection in it when I went to take a sip and what I saw was not what I expected to see.
"WHAT THE FUCK!"
Seeing the reflection of a total stranger in the water I couldn't help but shout. I was a hundred percent certain that this wasn't me. Staring back at me in the reflection was a lean-toned young man of average height with dark brown hair, slanted dark eyes, and thin eyebrows. This wasn't me but the reflection was mimicking each of my movements perfectly.
I couldn't help but look at the reflection for several minutes inspecting every little detail about my new body. It was strange, to say the least, but I didn't have any problems moving this body. Taking a long breath I started to sum up my situation.
"So, to sum up, my situation… I am in a place I do not know, with clothes I have never worn before. On top of that all off I am clueless about how all of this even happened. I am screwed… what now?"
As if answering my question the bush next to me started to rustle. With mixed feelings of hope and fear, I turned towards it. If it would be a human by some miracle then I could be safe on the other hand it could be a dangerous animal. With anticipation, I waited until the being stepped out of the bushes.
Upon seeing what creature stepped out of the bushes I could not help but blink a few times. What stepped out of the bush was a being that should only exist in a fictional work. I thought I was either losing my mind or this was a realistic dream I was having… I was not too sure which one I would prefer.
There was just no way that any of this can, should be, real. I did try pinching myself to see if I would wake up but no reaction regardless of how painful it was. Eventually, I stopped self-harming myself and looked at the creature once more.
It did resemble a dog somewhat but there was no way this being was an actual dog. It has orange fur with black stripes along its back and legs. The fur on its muzzle, chest, belly, and tail is beige, as is an additional tuft of fur on top of its head. It has gray eyes, a black nose, and large, round and triangular ears with beige interiors. Its forepaws have two visible claws which look pretty sharp.
There was no way this could be real, there was no way that could be real. Yet, right before my eyes, staring right back at me was a Growltihe, the Puppy Pokemon. Being a bit intimidated by the creature that shouldn't exist I took a step backward as the Pokemon's hair on its tail bristled out.
This left me with two options: The first option was to stand my ground, and the second was to run away and pray. I chose the second. What chance would I have if this was a real Pokemon?
Grabbing the bag which was with me for some reason I took off running, in the opposite direction of the Growlithe. As fast as my legs could carry me I ran along the small stream as the Growlith started to chase me.
I could only curse this fucking day as I tried to get away from a being that could easily move multiple times faster than the fastest human while trying to not subtly over roots or a stone… which was bound to happen. And when it happened the small puppy-like Pokemon easily caught up to me.
As my vision was starting to turn dark all he could see was the Growlithe standing next to him.
'Is this the end of my story… shit, there was so much more I wanted to do. I guess that I can at least take console in having a unique ending… fuck.'
This time when I opened my eyes I found myself in a bed looking at the ceiling of a room. My head did hurt like hell but at least I didn't die at the hands of a Pokemon. I was fully prepared to write what just happened off as a realistic dream but then I took a look around.
The room had light blue ruled floors as well as yellowish cream colored walls which lacked certain posters. And I wasn't lying in my bed, I was on some kind of sofa. Wherever I was this wasn't my freaking room. How did I get here? Was I kidnapped?
None of this was making any sense. There was just one thing I knew, whatever was going on was strange. Getting up from the sofa I decided to take a look around only to find sketchy-looking machines I have never before seen. However, there was a ray of hope which appeared in the form of a window.
I hoped to see some landmarks or at least people, anything that can help me in this situation. However, what I saw out there was something that once again let me question my sanity. Right outside this window was a large meadow with trees and ponds but that was fairly normal. What wasn't normal was the beings that were roaming this place. These beings were freaking Pokemon!
I had spent a large portion of my childhood watching the anime and playing every game after FireRed and LeafGreen of the main series. Heck, I even read the different manga versions. So, I had no problem identifying the different Pokemon species out there. There was a Pidgeotto, Makey, Tauros, and even an Arcanine.
My eyes were glued to the scene outside as my mind was occupied with trying to process a hundred, thousand different things. For one I thought about all the cool stuff this could imply and what kind of exciting life I could live in this world compared to the boring one I'd lived before. On the other hand, this meant I wouldn't be able to see my family and friends again. Then there were the Pokemons… how could I get one? The age for new trainers was 10 and judging by my new looks I was in the latter half of my teens, 16 maybe.
Then I had to question myself where in the timeline and in which universe I am. Was I in the Anime, Games, Manga, or a different version? What about the Protagonist? Should I even bother with whoever they are? I guess this can wait until I have more information.
I guess that means my goal, for now, will be to become a trainer if that is even possible. What should I say when I am asked about my background? Hey, there I am from another world… that certainly will make me look like a sane person. I need a good cover story if I don't want it to stop me from obtaining a Pokemon.
Speaking about Pokemon, from the ones outside it looks like I am in Kanto. This means that I could potentially get a member of my favorite starter trio. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, I had very fond memories of these through my several playthroughs during which I used them. But among them, I had my favorite which was my first ever Pokemon…
"Ah, good you have finally woken up. You had me worried that you might never open your eyes," came a voice from behind me.
When I turned around I saw an elderly man which I immediately recognized as Samual Oak, Pokemon Professor. He looked to be in his fifties with graying hair and was dressed in a white lab coat befitting of a researcher. I didn't even notice him coming in with my mind too occupied.
"Uhhhh hi," I replied, my brain needing to restart before functioning properly again. "If you don't mind me asking, where am I?"
Seeing me so confused, the Professor smiled before he mentioned for me to sit down on the sofa while he did so on a chair. "First, let me answer your question. We're in my research laboratory. As for how you got here, my Growlithe found you unconscious and did lead me to you."
'Growlithe was partly responsible for my situation.' "I guess I have to thank that Growlith later," I said, not wanting to get on the bad side of the Professor. "But did you say research lab? Are you perhaps a Professor?"
"Ah right, I have not introduced myself yet. My name is Samual Oak, Pokemon Professor," the elderly man said in a way that showed that he expected me to know it.
"You do not mean that you are THE Professor Samual Oak, the famous Pokemon researcher!" I said faking the surprise to the best of my ability.
"Yeah, I am rather famous, aren't I? But what about you lad, what's your name?" Professor Oak asked.
I scratch the back of my head. "Uh right, my name is David Schwarz."
"Nice to meet you, David. You don't mind if I call you David?"
"I don't mind, Mister Oak."
"Just call me Professor like everyone else does," Professor Oak replied, and I nodded. "Now I have just one more question. What exactly were you doing on the lab grounds? I do not mean that you are suspicious or anything but with the recent increase in Pokemon theft in the region I just have to make sure."
"Oh," I let out not too happy about that development. Think brain, we need a good explanation. "Uh, you see… I wanted to find your lab. I am new in the Kanto Region and had someone give me the directions to your lab."
"And why is that?" Professor Oak asked.
"You may have noticed that I do not own any Pokeballs, meaning I have no Pokemon. And I came here in hope that I might, if possible, receive a starter Pokemon."
Seeing me fiddle around with my fingers as I asked nervously the Professor couldn't help but chuckle. "Now I see, my boy. Understandably, you are a bit nervous but I assure you that there is no need to be. As for you becoming a Pokemon trainer, I don't see a problem, but how old are you exactly?"
"I am sixteen years old."
"Ah, then there would be no problem. The common age to receive one's Pokemon is fourteen but there are quite a few cases where parents hold back their kids for a year or two, so being sixteen is nothing to worry about."
'Fourteen? That's not right, the age should be ten. Weren't the characters from Black & White fourteen when they received their Pokemon? Oh well, this works for me fine.'
"But what made you decide to come all the way here to receive your first Pokemon? Why not just get one in your home region?"
"My home region… have you ever heard about the Oree region?" I asked, looking to the ground hoping my gamble would pay off. I knew it did when I saw the expression on Professor Oak's face darken.
"There is no need to say more, I understand. It must have been a tough life until now."
"It was and I hope for a fresh start in this region," I replied the Professor nodding understandingly.
"I do not see a problem providing you with a starter Pokemon for this fresh start. You are quite lucky, I have a batch of new Pokemon in. They are meant for a group of new trainers who should start their travels in a week. Since there are only two who are meant to receive one, one would be left and I do not mind leaving it to you."
"Really?" I asked, excited by the prospect of truly owning my own Pokemon.
"Sure, I just need to set up a Pokedex for you and you need to fill out some paperwork but other than that nothing is standing in your way," Professor Oak said and I just couldn't help but smile. "You know what, why don't you choose your starter right now?"
"I would love that," I replied immediately.
"Okay, then please follow me."
As the Professor asked, I did follow him through the lab, he even gave me a little tour of the facility. However, I didn't appreciate it as I was too excited about receiving my own Pokemon.
Bulbasaur, the Seed Pokemon. Bulbasaur is a small, quadrupedal amphibian Pokémon that has blue-green skin with darker patches and on its back is a green plant bulb. This is the Grass Type of the Kanto trio.
Charmander, the Lizard Pokemon. Charmander is a bipedal, reptilian Pokémon with a primarily orange body and blue eyes. A fire burns at the tip of this Pokémon's slender tail and has blazed there since Charmander's birth. This is the Fire Type of the Kanto trio.
Squirtle, the Tiny Turtle Pokémon. Squirtle is a small reptile Pokémon that resembles a light-blue turtle. Its body is encased by a tough shell that forms and hardens after birth. This shell is brown on the top, pale yellow on the bottom, and has a thick white ridge between the two halves.
Which one should I choose? If this world worked like the games then Bulbasaur would be the best option for Kanto. It has balanced stats and a great move pool which includes quite a few with status effects. But, this wasn't the game that was real. And what happened after I took the Kanto Gym challenge? Is there even a correct answer?
"Just choose the one you find most appealing, there is no wrong answer," Professor Oak said as he saw me struggle to decide.
"You are right…" I replied as I walked to the ball which would contain my starter. 'There is only one real answer.'
I took up the Pokeball in the middle and released the Pokemon. When the creature materialized out of the light my Pokemon appeared.
The small lizard looked around the familiar lab until its eyes fixated on me. "Cha?"
"Hey there, buddy. My name is David," I introduced myself to the Pokemon with what probably was the brightest smile on my face I ever had.
The small lizard Pokemon looked at me for a few more seconds before it cried happily. "Cha! Char! Charmander!" Seeing it in front of me I couldn't help but want to pet it. For one I wanted to confirm that it was real and second… it was just cute.
"It seems like he already took a liking to you. I think the two of you will make great partners and even better friends." Professor Oak stated with a smile.
"I think so too, right Charmander?"
"Char! Charmander!"
"It is great that you get along but I should warn you. Among the three starters, Charmander is the hardest to train and most trainers replace it later on in their journey."
"I doubt I would ever separate from this little guy here," I said looking at my partner.
"Now nothing is stopping you from starting your journey except paperwork," Professor Oak said and I could only groan. "I am the one who has to fill out most of it, not you but it might take a couple of days until everything is finished with the League. If you want you can stay at the lab until then."
"I would love that and this would give me time to bond with Charmander before we set out," I said smiling once again at my Pokemon. Maybe this second life of mine could be a lot of fun.
One week later…
It has been a week since Professor Oak entrusted me with Charmander and my own Pokedex. Normally, the paperwork shouldn't have taken that long but since I am from another region there were more papers to fill out than from someone from this region. But it wasn't too bad since that gave me opportunities.
I started helping the Professor take care of the Pokemon due to wanting to repay him for letting me stay at the lab but in the end, it might have been more beneficial for me. From the Professor, I did learn a lot about properly feeding Pokemon and other essential knowledge on how to ensure they stay healthy. It was pretty hard work to take care of each of them but it was fun and fulfilling, way more than a desk job.
The lab's library was also a place I regularly visited after the Professor gave me clearance to visit it. There were a ton of books on Pokemon, way too much to finish even if I had a month but I still tried to learn as much as I could. Attacks, Abilities, special training, and a lot more. I took it upon myself to gain any scrap of knowledge to expand all I knew from the games and anime.
And then there was Charmandander. He was just a pleasure to be around even if he is a bit naughty. We did a bit of training but nothing to strain yet as he was still young and I didn't want to overdo it. Still, he was able to learn Ember in the first couple of days under me but still no fourth move.
This got me wondering how many moves a Pokemon could even learn and be efficient. If they could use all moves they learned at one point in time that could be something but was that even possible to do if possible? Having too many options can be bad too as this could lead to not remembering certain moves in the heat of battle by either the trainer or Pokemon. I would have to look into that later.
Other than that there was nothing worthy of note. I have asked the Professor who would receive the other two but he just said one would be his grandson and the other a trainer from the town. That didn't tell me if I was in the anime, game, or manga. But I thought it would either have to be the game or manga since there are only supposed to come by two trainers and no which could mean that the Protagonist ends up with a Pikachu. And if this was the case I hoped it would be the game since the manga was… well, it would make me reconsider which career I would follow. Anyway, it was finally the day I would set out on the journey.
The Professor had offered me to stay and wait till the other trainers-to-be would come to collect their starter Pokemon and I decided to decline the offer. I thought I could observe from afar who would be my potential rivals without getting immediately involved with them.
And so after I had a final breakfast with the Professor I gathered my stuff and went into the small town. I decided to go buy at least a sleeping bag with what little money I had. With Charmander by my side, I wouldn't have to worry about staying warm during the night.
Now set up I walked to the edge of the town but close enough to see what was going out at the gate. And what I saw there was a bit confusing. Instead of Red or Blue, some other guy came out of the lab holding a Pokeball. He gave the lab another look before he walked away. Not too long after a guy which resembled Gary and Blue Oak. But I was certain that it was Gary since he brought a cheerleader section with him.
"Huh, I guess that means I am in the anime verse. Honestly, this might be the best for me as it is the safest of the possibilities. I should get going if I do not want to get caught up in Ash's Spearow debacle."
With this, I finally left Pallet Town for Route 1 wondering what would be the first Pokemon I would catch. Unimportant of which it would be, I looked forward to the encounter.
Hey, I hope you all enjoyed the chapter. This is my first story so I am open to any constructive criticism to improve my writing. I tried writing the first chapter in the first person and will try the second in the third person. I am still trying to find what works best for me and your input would be helpful. I don't know how fast I can get out the second chapter but if nothing major comes up it should be up by the end of the month.
Also whenever a new Pokemon is caught or evolves I will give a small overview of it:
