On Monday, Dolores Jane Umbridge was named Hogwarts High Inquisitor. Jade stared at the sign on the wall, shaking her head.

"Why such a bitch has a name so similar to mine? It makes me sick!" Jade exclaimed, as if that was the worst of that sign. "And what the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"She can get rid of any professor she wants," a seventh-year Ravenclaw boy told her. "Basically she's above all of the other teachers."

"I hate that toad," Jade exclaimed being heard by some Slytherins, that Ravenclaw, Ron, Potter and Granger.

"You are not the only one," Ron said with a shrug.

The following day, while they had double transfigurations, Umbridge was there to inspect McGonagall. They were learning how to vanish living things. Last week Jade vanished the snail on her first try, so she moved to a bigger animal. That day, the rest of the class was doing the spell with mice, while she had a rabbit.

This was the first time for Jade having Umbridge as inspector. She had inspected Trelawney the day before but Jade had dropped that class as she found it a waste of time, at least in the way Trelawney taught it. And she had heard from older and younger students about Umbridge being in their classes.

"Hem, hem," said Professor Umbridge, for like the fifth time.

"Yes?" Professor McGonagall said, not being able to ignore her any more.

"I was just wondering, Professor, whether you received my note telling you of the date and time of your inspect..."

"Obviously I received it, or I would have asked you what you are doing in my classroom," Professor McGonagall said, turning her back firmly on Umbridge. Jade let a small giggle out as others exchanged looks. "As I was saying, today we shall be practicing the altogether more difficult vanishment of mice. Now, the Vanishing Spell —"

"Hem, hem."

"I wonder how you expect to gain an idea of my usual teaching methods if you continue to interrupt me? You see, I do not generally permit people to talk when I am talking."

Umbridge looked as she had just been slapped in the face. She did not speak, but straightened the parchment on her clipboard and began scribbling. Professor McGonagall seemed to not care, while the students were enjoying the exchange.

"As I was saying, the Vanishing Spell becomes more difficult with the complexity of the animal to be vanished. The snail, as an invertebrate, does not present much of a challenge; the mouse, or in Lias' case a rabbit, as a mammal, offers a much greater one. This is not, therefore, magic you can accomplish with your mind on your dinner. So, you know the incantation, let me see what you can do."

Jade at once vanished the rabbit and Slytherin was awarded five points. She was given a cat then. Jade was satisfied and happy with her performance, but she also enjoyed the way McGonagall talked to the Toad. She was liking McGonagall more now.

Later that day Jade's mood drop, though. They had now double Care of Magical Creatures and of course, Umbridge was there. Jade felt like she had had enough of her for that day.

"Doesn't she have to teach?" Jade asked, noticing she seemed to be more in other classes than her own.

"Who said that?" Umbridge asked.

No one said a word. Umbridge looked at Jade but she didn't show any sign of nervousness or guilt so Umbridge wasn't sure if it had been her or not, even when she could swear she heard Jade's voice.

"Stop it, you don't want more detention, do you?" Draco whispered and she just shook her head.

Umbridge took a different approach that time, instead of asking the teacher, she asked the students several questions and apparently Hagrid, who wasn't present at the moment, they had a substitute teacher, had done his job well. Everyone seemed to answer correctly to her questions.

"Now, I hear there have been injuries in this class?"

"That was me," Draco said. "I was slashed by a hippogriff."

"A hippogriff ?" Professor Umbridge asked, now scribbling frantically.

"Only because he was too cocky to think the animal wouldn't do anything to him, plus he insulted the hippogriff," Jade said quickly, not to defend Hagrid, but to defend the creature, she was an animal lover and that's why she chose that subject in particular.

"Yeah, because he was too stupid to listen to what Hagrid told him to do," Potter added angrily.

Potter and Jade were in opposite directions, Umbridge turned to look from Jade to him and then back to Jade. She smiled, as though she was waiting for that moment.

"Another night's detention, I think," Umbridge said softly to Potter and then walked to Jade. As usual Jade didn't look nervous or looked down or anything, she stood where she was and looked directly into Umbridge eyes. "Miss Lias, you'll be joining Mr. Potter tonight."

"I'll be there," Jade muttered in a voice that was hard to read. She was pissed off but she didn't show it. It almost seemed like she was being defying.

As Umbridge left, Jade glared at her the whole time until she was elbowed by Draco. She turned to look at Draco with such coldness that Draco was a bit surprised.

"Well done, Jade," Draco told her angrily. "Got what you wanted?"

"I didn't mean to put you in a bad position but you know the hippogriff wasn't guilty, you insulted him. And about that toad, I don't care. It's detention. It's not like I've never been to detention, I'll survive."

That night Jade went to the third floor after dinner, she was still angry at everything, and Draco wasn't helping as he kept scolding her and telling her to try to control herself. She saw Potter coming from the opposite direction and actually waited for him so they could go in together.

"Well, how ironic, isn't it? The person who mocked me for getting detention is now doing detention with me and it's only the second week of school," Potter exclaimed and Jade rolled her eyes.

"I just wanted to spend time with you," Jade said blinking an eye. "But I've got to admit that woman has something that just boils my blood."

"Same here."

The two walked in together and sat next to each other. Jade was about to get her things out when Umbridge told her she was going to write the lines with special utensils, so parchment and ink were given to her.

"What do you want me to write?" Jade asked nonchalantly.

"I must respect the authority." Jade had to bit her lip so she wouldn't laugh. "You'll keep writing until I say you can stop."

Jade knew something was out of the ordinary even before starting, when she had a look at Potter's hand which was next to her. Jade being a lefty, and having Harry on her right, looking at his left hand was easy, especially as it rested on the table.

Jade started to write and almost immediately she started to feel this burning sensation in her right hand. She didn't stop writing, she didn't even take a look at her hand. To anyone it could seem as she didn't feel any kind of pain, and she knew that was bothering Umbridge as she kept looking at her with an unsatisfied look on her ugly face.

Jade wasn't sure how long it had been when Umbridge finally told them they could both stop. Jade gave Umbridge the utensils while looking at her straight in the eye. She wasn't going to act weak in front of that woman and it was obvious Umbridge wasn't enjoying that.

"Here," Jade said to her, her voice was strong and firm. She could feel the blood dripping down her fingers but she pushed that feeling to the back of her mind.

"I hope the message was learnt," Umbridge told her with fake sweetness.

"Of course," Jade said in the same tone and even smirked. Umbridge smiled faded.

Jade grabbed her things and walked out of the office in a calm manner. When she was out, already in the hallway, she heard Potter calling her but she pretended she didn't listen. But Potter ran, got in front of her and stopped her.

"What?" Jade asked annoyed.

"Didn't you feel it?" Potter asked her, stunned.

"Of course I felt it!" she exclaimed. "Don't be stupid!"

"Then..."

"I've had worse, Potter," Jade said, trying to walk past him but he stopped her again. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. She was annoyed.

Jade sighed once again, feeling uncomfortable by Potter's gaze. She looked down and saw his hand. She grabbed it without warning and Potter felt instant relief. He looked down in amazement. The blood had stopped flowing and the wound was starting to close.

"Yours is quite deep," Jade told him as she let go of his hand and he started to examine it more closely. "I can't promise you that won't leave a scar but we can try."

"Thank you," Potter said, he was still astonished the Slytherin girl had helped him. "Why don't you do it to yourself?"

"Nah," Jade muttered shaking her hand. "I'm alright."

"Lias... usually people don't know healing spells. Just simple ones, if even that."

"That was a simple one."

"How do you know it?" Potter asked ignoring her. Jade looked down.

"What's up with you? What do you want me to tell you? That I was forced to learn that spell? That I've used it more often than I'd like to admit, that I've gone through some really messed up shit...?"

For the first time Potter saw something in those eyes that now were brown. Potter remembered that last year Ron had mentioned her eyes turned colours. They could be brown or green or a mix and he hadn't realized that until now. He just knew that they were always cold and empty. It was like seeing a doll, no emotions, but now he saw sadness and hurt until she looked away.

"Good-night, Potter."

Jade was so annoyed and felt a bit exposed and felt even angrier because of it that she forgot to hide her hand. She wasn't going to heal it because she knew it was a stupid wound that was going to heal on its own but someone saw it, and eventually it got to Draco's ears.

Draco sat next to her during breakfast and grabbed her right hand, she tried to yank it away but Draco's grip was strong. He looked like he was about to murder someone. Jade had never seen him like that.

"I must respect the authority?" Draco asked perplexed. "Care to explain, Jade?"

Jade stood up, not wanting to be the centre of attention, especially when Umbridge was present, and rushed out of the Great Hall. Draco followed her, and for the second time in less than a day, she had been stopped in her tracks.

"Jade, what the hell did that woman do to you?"

"I can handle it. It doesn't matter."

"It does matter! We must tell your parents!" Draco exclaimed and Jade actually laughed.

"My parents, Draco? Let me tell you something about them... They don't care about me. I was injured many times when I was a kid, sometimes because of them, the house-elves healed my injuries. There was one time I fell very high from my broom and I broke my back and some other bones. A house-elf took me to my mother and when she noticed it was bad and I was having a hard time breathing she took me to St. Mungos. But she didn't... pamper me while I recovered, which was really painful. She told me that was what I deserved for not paying attention, for not doing it well. I'm sure they won't care about this, they will tell me to stop whining and to not get more detention."

"Okay, then I'll tell my parents," Draco exclaimed. He was outraged.

"No, it's useless. That damn decree that made her High Inquisitor was approved by Hogwarts governors and guess what? Your father is one of them, isn't he? So he is in favour of this and her... So don't waste your time. I'm fine."

"Stop lying."

Draco was so enraged, she had never seen him so wrathful. To be honest, Jade hated to be in disadvantage like she was now against the toad. But she could fight her battles, not even when her brother was around she went to ask for his help. No. She stood up for herself every time. The only good thing her parents had taught her was to not be weak or at least not show it.

Jade knew though that somehow she was going to get even, she was not doing anything but smile and be kind. She wasn't showing any sign that what happened affected her, and Umbridge was evidently upset about it. Maybe she needed to fight the toad with another strategy. She enjoyed seeing Potter suffer and hearing him whine from time to time. She smiled every time he moved his hand when it hurt too much but she stayed still and made it seem like she wasn't in any kind of discomfort and she hated it and Jade loved that.

Jade knew she couldn't play Umbridge's game, but she was going to play her cards as best as she could. And while she might be angry and wanting to do something to her, Jade had learnt that at times she only needed to act slow, wait and be patient.

But she also knew that at times she would just act without thinking, as she was like that and she would end up in detention.
