* Part 9 *
Buffy turned several corners as she entered the "bad side" of town and laughed at the term.the whole town was one big bad, this part just looked more the part
She rounded another corner as she found the building she had tracked the two vamps from last night to earlier that morning. She had wanted to interrogate them then, but knew that Dawn would be getting up for school soon and had wanted to be there for her.
Buffy had a few hours before her shift started at the double meat palace and had decided to make the best use of it that she could; pummelling the undead.
The slayer moved silently along the shadows of the building were the vampire nest was located.
She advanced on the building until she was directly in front of a large metal door and with a sharp flick of her wrist the handle was broken and the slayer slipped easily inside.
The air was stale and Buffy could feel the death around her, it permeated the place, sunk deep into the walls and coated the floor.
She reached out with her senses in the dark, abandoned warehouse, searching for the tell tale tingle that told her demons were around and.
Nothing.
No tingle, not even a twinge.
Buffy frowned into the darkness and she glided along the walls, making sure to keep well hidden in the shadows. Newbies couldn't sense her, so she wasn't nervous of being discovered.
There had been roughly 5 vamps here earlier.they couldn't have just disappeared into thin air.
She saw a figure lying on the ground in the distance, but from the way the body lay, she knew that it was a dead human. Remorse tore through her and she made a mental note to deliver the body to the morgue. Whoever they had been deserved to be properly mourned; she owed them that much.
Buffy searched the darkness for any sign of life, undead or otherwise, but again she came up with nothing and that was when she noticed a stream of light filtering down through a hole in the roof of the decrepit building. Stealthily she crept towards it and moved to hid behind a large metal pillar close by.
Staying completely still, she again listened for any signs of movement that she might have missed earlier, but she still couldn not hear or feel anything that would indicate that there was another being in the warehouse with her.
* Maybe they went sewer hopping? * Althought that didn't make much sense.most vamps and especially newbies, tended to sleep through the day. Plus, there had been several vamps, and she sincerely doubted that they had ALL decided to "hang out".
Stealing herself for anything, Buffy turned, glanced around the corner and froze.
* What.?* Confusion and apprehension crept in as Buffy starred dumbfounded at the scene before her.
Two dead bodies lay on the ground, surrounded by mounds of ash.
Brows drawn in consternation the slayer moved around the pillar and walked cautiously towards the centre of the room. It was illuminated by the ray of light shining down from above as if it were a spotlight for the macabre display.
Buffy stopped as she reached the piles of dust and she knew without a doubt that it was the remains of the vampires that she was after.and more.
Someone had cleaned house.
Buffy grit her teeth in frustration, * Damn.there goes my one and only lead on touchy-feely guy. *
She slowly ran a weary hand over her face and as she regarded the remains of her prey and two humans.
A slight noise above her caught her attention and Buffy whipped around, eyes searching the darkness for any sign of movement.
Narrowing her gaze, Buffy jumped into the air and grabbed ahold of the metal overhanging bridge above her.
Carefully pulling herself onto the bridge as it swayed unsteadily beneath her Buffy scanned the area around her.
She knew that something had been up here; she could feel it now. How was it that she had missed it before?
Buffy turned back around to face the floor where she had just stood and the arrangement of dust and flesh revealed itself.
It was a she noticed something.
The bodies and ash looked.precise, arranged in particular fashion.
It looked as if someone had moved it to form a design of some sort, but she couldn't figure out what.
The grisly design seemed familiar to her with its 'U' shape with the pointed 'J' in the middle.
A cold shiver ran down her spine, something about the symbol seemed familiar to her, but she couldn't place where at that moment.
Suddenly a burning sensation began at the back of her neck. It continued to grow in intensity as Buffy caught sight of a figure moving in the shadows below.
A cloaked figure emerged, walking towards the symbol of dust.
It turned its head up towards her, and although Buffy coulnd't see its face, she knew that it could see her.
She felt the power radiating off of it and with a sudden clarity knew that the creature of last night was before her.
It lifted one hand above the ashes and suddenly a fire roared to life in the ash.
The symbol burned brightly in the dark of the warehouse.
And the creature aws gone and with it the burning feeling on her neck.
Face solem, Buffy raise a hand to her neck and felt nothing but cool skin and she rubbed at it absently.
It had burned, as surely as the fire did below her.
The fire burned in an unearthly glow, casting a greenish light over everything before, in a blinding flash it burst upward.
Buffy fell back hard onto the metal grate of the bridge as it swung precariously from the force of the flames. It broke through the roof causing fires to break out along the buildings frame.
The bridge she was on creaked and fell a little under her weight and the strain of the heat beside it.
Buffy's eyes were riveted to the stream of light before her. The malevolence behind it was chilling and the slayer found herself cold even surrounded by flames.
The flames licked at the hinges of the bridge and it jerked again, bringin the slayer back to her senses and the danger that she was in.
Her gaze focused on a hinge on the bridge and knew that in a few moments it would give.
The burning column suddenly sucked itself down, into the symboland a sense of dread formed in the pit of the slayers stomach.
Scrambling to her feet she set off at a dead run towards the window at the other end of the bridge and prayed that it would hold until she got there.
Buffy ran at the window and crashed through it just as fire exploded behind her.
Buffy was thrown far with the force of the explosion.
She landed hard against the ashfalt of a vacant parking lot and rolled with the force of her fall.
When she came to a stop, Buffy tossed back her hair and starred up at the building that she had just been in.
It was now a firey inferno.and she was reminded of the many different notions of hell.
If she hadn't known better she might have thought that the creature had opened a portal to a hell dimension. But she hadn't seen it open a portal.
Buffy sat back on her hands, her breathing laboured as she watched the flames ingulf the wire and brick.
The sound of fire engines in the distance dragged Buffy from her stunned reverie.
She carefully rose to her feet, grimacing in pain as an intense headache threatened to send her sprawling back to the ground.
Taking deep breathes, the slayer slowly righted herself, wincing as her right knee protested the movement.
Buffy began moving away from the burning building, but couldn't help one last glance towards it. The firey symbol was burned into her memory, but she couldn't for the life of her remember why it was that it bothered her so much.
End Part Nine
