23. Exploration

Tiny hands reached forward and tugged on auburn locks, and a gurgling giggle resounded through the room. Blue eyes, the exact same shade of blue as his mother's eyes were, peered up at said woman, smiling a toothless, but adorable nonetheless, smile, his hands tugging insistently on his mother's hair.

His hands abandoned her hair, letting it slip from tiny fingertips, and found solace in touching her face, softly patting her face as he stared at her, eyes filled with adoration.

Sally smiled softly at her son, her handsome little bundle of joy, as she carefully cradled him in her warm arms. She blew kisses at him and tickled his tummy, causing him to giggle even harder. Her heart burned with the love she felt for him, her darling Benjamin.

While he had her eyes, Benjamin looked just like his father. His fur was black with streaks of red, and his quills were in the same style as his father's quills were. Sally was so caught up with playing with her son, failed to hear the sound of the front door opening and shutting. It wasn't until she felt warm, strong arms wrapping themselves around her waist that she turned around, staring at her husband's face.

"Hey," Sally said, beaming up at him. Benjamin squealed, excitedly clapping his hands. Shadow smiled, kissing his wife and ruffling his son's quills.

"Hey, princess," Shadow answered, capturing his lips in a kiss deeper than the previous one, delighting in the way she moaned, pressing her lips against his in answering kiss. She almost forgot about the child in her arms, but when she felt him squirming, she broke the kiss and pulled back.

She couldn't help but giggle at the frustrated groan her husband emanated.

"There'll be plenty of time for that later, Shadow. Now, come hold your son. He missed you too." Shadow took their son from her arms, holding him in the same manner as she did, gently rocking him.

Benjamin smiled at his father, tugging on quills that strongly resembled his own. He stared into his father's red eyes, but he wasn't afraid. He knew he was safe in his father's arms.
