Professor Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Order of Merlin 1st Class and the world's last hope of opposing the most feared wizard of all time sat with his head in his hands near to defeat.

Since he had put the Potters into hiding under the highly advanced fidelius charm he had felt almost helpless against the seemingly endless tide of attacks on muggles and wizards alike that had swept the country and was all too aware that the entire magical community was waiting for him to pull a rabbit out of a hat and come up with some miraculous way for them all to win this desperate war against Voldemort.

Though he would never have admitted it, the one rock that was Dumbledore's stability in the world was James Potter. And now that he had to limit his visits to the Potter house he was at a loss.

For now however there was nothing he could do except continue his previous efforts to stem the flow of Deatheater attacks on the population.

Lily Potter was crouched behind the sofa waiting silently for the moment when she would jump up to surprise her baby son Harry. Her long auburn hair was flowing down her back in waves that could never be tamed. Any second now, she thought as she heard the child in front of her giggle. Just a few more seconds… When somebody grabbed her from behind and lifted her up and over on to the sofa so that she landed next to her confused son who was extremely surprised to find mummy suddenly right next to him when she hadn't been before.

"James!" Lily exclaimed from her current position next to her son, "How many times have I told you about coming up from behind me?" Although her voice sounded fairly sincere the look in her eyes and the smile on her face said otherwise.

"About a hundred." Replied her husband as he swung himself over the back of the settee to join his young family.

Lily picked up her son and placed him on her lap so that he looked directly up at her, his emerald green eyes mirroring hers exactly and for a moment Lily felt as though her son, who was only twelve moths old, could read her mind and was searching through all the worries and troubles in her life and that just by being there he was solving them and smoothing out the wrinkles of her existence.

Tears blurred Lily's eyes and she leant on James for support, which he willingly gave, wrapping his arms around her. If only they could all be free of the Dark Lord once and for all. If only their son could grow up in a world free of darkness and fear.

If only…
