Chapter 63

With Drew's words still buzzing in her ear, May couldn't help but admire the rose he had given her. It was the first time he'd openly admitted to a rose being for her, and she found herself feeling like she was walking on air.

Recalling his shy smile, she couldn't help but flush as his words filled her mind.

Sure, she had no idea what had caused the man's animosity to disappear quite so suddenly, but whatever had done it made her feel all the more relief. She just hoped he remembered to be positive the next time she saw him.

The only problem was the unknown woman who May had accidentally eavesdropped on. It left her feeling ashamed to have witnessed another's despair, and May honestly did not want to cause the unknown woman any more distress. However, whoever this stranger was, she had her sights on Drew, and May did not feel like she had any claim or right to the man. After all the years she'd neglected their tenacious rivalry, who was she to stand in the way of the happiness of others?

With a sigh, she didn't see Iris climb a nearby tree as comfortably as any Mankey. Instead, she walked beside Cilan, her thoughts consumed by another green haired man as the Unovan native spoke about the freshness of the air.

'It's always hard, when the journey begins. Hard to find your way, hard to make new friends,' Iris sang as she swung through the trees, pulling May out of her thoughts.

With a light laugh, May tried to climb up a nearby tree, ignoring Cilan's exasperated sighs. She vaguely heard him mutter something about both Iris and herself being as childish as Ash, but did not respond to it.

'But there's nothing you can't do, cause you've got the power inside of you,' May continued once she was perched beside Iris, though the violet haired woman did not pause in her movements before latching onto the next tree, an eager smile on her face.

'It's not always black and white, but your heart always knows what's right. It's not about win or lose, it's the path you choose. Let the journey begin,' Iris grinned, jumping smoothly from one branch to the other, looking almost as though she knew this forest like the back of her hand.

'Ladies, stop,' Cilan cried with narrowed eyes as he ran underneath them, struggling to keep up.

Hearing the man's plight, May hesitated slightly, though Iris paid him no heed, continuing to sing eagerly.

Jumping awkwardly out of the tree, May chuckled at the man's garnet green eyes, which were intent upon Iris, a small smile visible on his lips. His affections for the Unovan woman were becoming increasingly obvious as she got to know the man, and May couldn't help but want to tease him.

'You're drooling,' May whispered to the man, who blinked and began searching for a tissue, a flush filling his cheeks.

'You know, that was a joke, but it's good to finally see you showing some emotion that isn't quiet confidence,' May giggled before rushing after her friend in the trees.

'Hurry up, guys! What's keeping you so long?' Iris' voice boomed through the forest.

'Coming!' May called back as Cilan rushed after his fellow Unovan, shaking his head at May's words.

'I can't wait to eradicate Alder!' Iris laughed as she swung from one tree to the next.

'She sure moves quickly for someone in a tree,' May murmured in disbelief as Cilan panted softly beside her.

'She's incredible,' Cilan agreed quietly before letting out a strangled noise, glancing nervously at May, who grinned at him.

'She sure is,' May winked back before following Iris who'd dropped from her branch and was waiting for them with crossed arms, all joy eradicated from her face.
