Chapter 55: Dominoes IV
January 10th
Age 763 (2013), Houston, Texas
Vegeta met the man, the machine, or whatever the hell it was halfway. It took the prince several rapid steps to reach Amazo, but with one effortless leap, the hulking figure caught up to the prince. Their fists connected in midair, and the shockwave that followed was tremendous. Livewire, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, and Deadshot had managed to climb to their feet but were immediately knocked back down by the gust of wind that followed Vegeta's initial encounter with the robot.
Amazo's pale grey fist was massive. Vegeta's knuckles looked like a toddler's against his. Amazo gazed down at the Saiyan with red unblinking eyes. It was slightly unnerving, but Vegeta had faced far more fearsome challenges in the past. Frieza instantly came to mind, and unlike the androgynous Frost Demon, Vegeta doubted his current foe could vaporize a planet.
Neither of their fists budged; both combatants were locked in a stalemate. Amazo appeared to be analyzing Vegeta, so the prince took the courtesy to do the same. Amazo was easily ten feet tall, muscular, and barechested. He had a surprising lack of nipples and eyebrows as well as pointed elf-like ears. His face was stern, with chiseled cheeks, a square jaw, and a narrow, aquiline nose.
Amazo's exterior resembled skin, but upon further inspection, it was just a layer of coated metal. There were visible metallic segments with joints, and the segments that resembled skin were all pale grey. The crown of Amazo's head was as orange as a carrot, and the machine wore dark green pants with matching wrist bands. It was an odd mixture of colors, and Harley Quinn couldn't help but comment on Amazo's appearance.
"Waller sent us to fight an oversized leprechaun?" Harley asked with a quizzical expression as she scratched the side of her head. The rest of her squad had managed to regroup and were gawking at their enemy as well.
"And I thought I was tall," Killer Croc said, mentally whistling at Amazo's height.
"I have a bad feeling about this," Deadshot mumbled to himself as he aimed his gun at Amazo.
"For all that tough talk, you sure do seem to be struggling over there, little man. Why don't you step aside and let the adults handle this?" Livewire cupped her hands around her mouth as she shouted at Vegeta.
The prince glanced over his shoulder, scowling, and said, "Shut up! I don't need your help!" Vegeta's Ki ignited around him, forming an ivory aura that ascended higher and higher as he started to scream.
"I think ya made him mad, Livewire," Harley said as the flame-shaped aura reached a peak. Livewire had a snarky remark lined up, but it died on her tongue as the prince suddenly vanished from sight.
"That coward! He ran aw.…." She swallowed her words when the prince materialized behind Amazo and kicked the machine in the back, propelling it into the air. Blue balls of swirling energy erupted from Vegeta's palms and struck Amazo repeatedly as the automaton hung in the air. Fiery explosions ensued, and Livewire was forced to shield her eyes from the radiant lights until the flames finally dwindled out of existence.
Vegeta lowered his hands, placing them by his side, and inspected his handiwork. Amazo was nowhere to be found. It was plausible that his attacks had annihilated every part of the machine's body, but Vegeta was doubtful. Amazo didn't give off a Ki signature, so it would be impossible to know if the automaton was truly dead, but for now, the Saiyan was satisfied with what he had accomplished.
"I told you, clowns, that I didn't need your help," Vegeta said as his eyes fluttered over to the quartet of villains who were warily staring at him. "Waller should have sent me on this mission alone."
"Maybe you should be nicer to the guy that can make things go splody in a heartbeat?" Harley said as she nudged Livewire in the ribs, but the villainess was too entranced to speak.
"Wow," was all the former blogger could sputter out.
"Mission accomplished, let's go home," Killer Croc said; he turned to begin walking in the direction the group had come from but was pulled back by Deadshot.
"No, Amazo is still here," Deadshot tugged at Killer Croc's wrist. He didn't possess the strength to reroute the reptile, but his firm, pesky grip was enough to make the mutant think twice.
Killer Croc sniffed the air and smelled…..nothing. He blocked out the scents of the rain and his teammates, but it was still the same. His enhanced senses would have detected something, anything, even if Amazo was a machine. The overwhelming smell of metal should have filled his nostrils if Amazo was still alive. "I don't smell a thing."
Deadshot's helmet was in a frenzy. His infrared monoscope was detecting something that was moving quickly. It was too fast for him to get a clear image of, but its trajectory set it on a collision course with Vegeta.
"Look out, Vegeta!" Deadshot yelled, but by then, it was too late. Amazo's blurred body smashed into the prince, sending the Saiyan rocketing like a streaking comet. Vegeta was catapulted into the air and flew off into the distance until he became a twinkle in the night sky.
"Aww shit," Deadshot cursed and began unloading the rounds in his firearm. They pelted Amazo's skin but fell to the ground as harmlessly as the raindrops from the sky. It was an exercise in futility, and all it did was center the robot's attention on him. Deadshot blinked, and a second later, Amazo was in front of him, hoisting his body into the air by his throat. Amazo's gigantic fingers sunk into his skin, past his body armor, and squeezed until the bones in his neck started creaking.
His wrist magnums fired indiscriminately at Amazo's face, but the machine was unharmed and unamused. Deadshot's only saving grace was Killer Croc, who tackled the robot, forcing him to release his victim. Deadshot hit the ground hard, coughing as he gasped for air. Killer Croc sliced his claws on Amazo's chest, but the robot stood silently, unperturbed as the reptilian attacked him. Killer Croc attacked ferociously, growling as his claws dug into the synthetic alloy that made up Amazo's skin. He scratched and scratched and scratched until his brawny arms grew weary, and by then, it was too late for the reptilian to rectify his folly.
With the twitch of his hand Amazo backhanded Killer Croc's head. The reptilian was sent flying and skidded across the damp parking lot, upturning the pavement as his body rolled, eventually coming to a painful stop against a light pole. Livewire wasn't so eager to dance and sized Amazo up before she attacked. He was a machine, and every machine had an energy source. All she had to do was use her powers to drain his energy source, and the robot would be out of commission.
It sounded easy enough but was much harder to do in practicality, especially when Amazo punched her in the face before she could put her plan into action. She was in a world of pain as she staggered back from the blow, and she was almost certain that her jaw had been dislocated. She was in her human form, which put her at a great disadvantage. In her electrical form, she was nearly invulnerable to all physical attacks, but the downpour of rain would ensure she'd short circuit if she switched to that form. Leslie Willis cursed under her breath and gave Amazo a quick zap.
The bolt of electricity bounced off his chest and fizzled out as the rain washed it away. That was disappointing, but she had expected that. Amazo rushed to engage her, but this time she was ready. She slid underneath one of Amazo's mammoth legs as the robot attempted to kick her. Her time in the rec yard with Harley was paying off; three months ago, that attack would have smacked her dead in the face. Amazo's leg hovered over her head briefly, and Livewire jumped on the opportunity to latch onto it.
She leaped off the ground and hugged her arms around his ankles. The machine wiggled his leg in an attempt to shake her free, and when that failed, he outstretched a hand and opened his palm. Energy, similar to the kind that Vegeta had summoned minutes earlier, began to bubble in his palm. Livewire had seen its effect firsthand and refused to fall prey to its power. Cerluen electricity sizzled around her body, coursing through her every vein as she unleashed her wrath upon Amazo.
The rain dampened her powers to an extent, but at this close of a range, Amazo felt the full brunt of her capabilities. The machine wobbled to the ground, taking Livewire along for the ride as he collapsed on his back. Amazo's piercing red eyes lingered open for a span before his eyelids dropped like a curtain, and his body ceased moving. Livewire sprang to her feet, jumping in the air enthusiastically as she praised herself.
"I'd love to see Vegeta try and top that," She smiled cockily as Harley approached her. Livewire was eager to celebrate, but Harley was unusually tense.
"I hate to be a party pooper, but I don't think this is over yet," Harley gulped as she pointed a trembling finger at Amazo, whose eyes had jolted back open as he backflipped onto his feet.
"What the fu…."
Livewire never got to finish her sentence; Amazo blasted her with a bolt of electricity before the villainess could utter the last syllable. Leslie's knees went weak, and she flopped to the ground, chin first. Amazo had hit her with a negative charge of electricity. She tried to warn Harley about Amazo's replication ability, but the former psychiatrist had already hit him with her mallet by then. The handle of the oversized mallet bent as it struck the back of Amazo's neck, instantly drawing his attention.
With his body still facing the opposite direction, Amazo's head twisted around inhumanly, eyeing Harley with disdain.
"Hey there, Mr. robot," She chuckled nervously. "That's a neat trick. Where'd ya learn it from, the exorcist?"
The rest of Amazo's body whipped around, and the machine went on the offensive, firing bolts of electricity with his right hand and Ki beams with his other.
"I know that wasn't my best material, but you don't have to kill me for it….literally."
Harley ducked, slid, rolled, and jumped away from every one of Amazo's attacks. Her acrobatic skills were on full display as she narrowly avoided becoming human fried barbeque. The parking lot was now littered with potholes, and their number increased every time Harley made a heart-stopping move. Her stamina was superhuman, but even she had her limits. She landed on her feet from a cartwheel and paused to catch her breath.
She panted heavily and leaned against her crooked mallet for support. Time in the rec yard allowed her to practice her moves, but that was still a far cry from the battlefield experience she desperately needed. She hadn't faced a life and death situation in over a year, and her rust was showing up at the worst possible moment. Amazo didn't care, and as the robot prepared another Ki beam, Harley wondered whether her death would mean anything.
But fortunately for her, Deadshot interrupted her skirmish, firing multiple rounds at Amazo, which did little to impede the robot but managed to draw his ire.
"Why did I sign up for this shit?" Deadshot cursed as he took off in a full sprint. Amazo immediately lit up the area he had just been standing in. Even through his body armor, he could still feel the warmth from the explosions prickling his skin. He was flung skyward as an especially deadly explosion thrust him into the air. The assassin managed to land on his feet, and once his boots hit the pavement, he looked back and saw an enraged Vegeta speeding towards Amazo.
"I'll tear you to pieces!" Vegeta howled.
The prince's white armor was soiled with dirt and stunk to high heaven. Amazo had knocked him into downtown Houston where he had eventually landed in a dumpster. This was an egregious humiliation to not only his pride but his uniform. Amanda Waller had gifted him Saiyan armor that was practically identical to the garments he'd worn during his invasion of Manhattan. He was a mirror image of that day; the only thing missing was his tail.
Vegeta's knee rammed into Amazo's chin, and the robot floated higher and higher as Vegeta alternated between knees, using each one in a successive assault. There were no visible signs of damage, but Vegeta could see the machine's jaw rattling with each strike. Amazo took the punishment in silence, and when he'd finally had enough, the robot discharged a stream of electricity that caused Vegeta to flee momentarily.
The prince backed away cautiously, scowling as Amazo gave him chase. The machine was unrelenting in his pursuit. Vegeta attempted several evasive maneuvers, but at every turn and angle, the automaton followed him. The ground was a blip to Vegeta's eyes by the time the Saiyan stopped running. He had risen hundreds of feet into the air, and thunder crackled in the distance as he hid behind a pair of clouds. But it didn't take long for Amazo's blood-red eyes to spot him.
The sky trembled as Amazo raced towards him, a sonic boom erupting beneath his feet. Vegeta smirked and began curling his fingers near his chest with the palms of his hands faced outward in opposite directions. There would be no way for Amazo to dodge this.
"Galick Gun!"
Vegeta shouted the words with every fiber of his being. The stormy sky was irradiated with a fuchsia burst of light that punctured the shadow of the night. Clouds parted, and raindrops dispersed as Vegeta unleashed his hellacious attack. On ground level, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, and a now revived Livewire gaped in amazement at the scintillating light show. The searing beam of Ki was released from Vegeta's palms and collided with Amazo, enveloping the entirety of the robot's body as it ejected him from the air.
The machine lost all autonomy over its body, and Vegeta pumped more energy into his palms to guarantee Amazo's destruction. The robot was pushed back, inching ever closer to a violent landing. The person Vegeta had sensed inside the warehouse peeped out of a shattered window, and with an alarmed expression, he began running for the hills. In a few seconds, Amazo would be at his doorstep, and no pleasantries would be exchanged.
Amazo's body tore through the ceiling of the warehouse, rupturing the roof as steel, aluminum, and other metals collapsed with him. The robot smashed through several dilapidated floors and hit the foundation of the warehouse face first. Rubble and debris consumed Amazo seconds after, and the rain from the destroyed roof began to pour in.
"No! No! No!" An irate man yelled as he ran towards the pile of debris that covered Amazo. He
began desperately moving the rubble but to no avail. He was too thin, frail, and weak to budge even a single piece of steel that had fallen on his creation. "You have to get up, Amazo…this isn't over yet!"
"Oh, but it is."
The man looked up and saw Vegeta hovering over him. The prince, in all his glory, scowled at him and extended a hand that latched onto the man's throat. Vegeta squeezed hard and lifted the man off his feet.
"I don't know who you are, but you're coming with me."
January 7th
Age 763 (2013), Themsycira
Diana and Donna leaped into the air. The wind was behind their backs as the two sisters approached Cottus, punching the obsidian monstrosity in unison. Their knuckles made contact with the creature, but dozens of pitch-black hands corralled their wrists and arms before any significant damage could be done. The incalculable sea of hands that collectively made up Cottus's body had a grip as strong as iron. Anytime Diana and Donna managed to wrench their hands free of one, another rubbery hand took its place, pulling the Amazon warriors closer to his body.
Cottus stunk of sulfur, and his scent was so offensive Donna and Diana's faces blanched each time they got a whiff of him. There was only so much the sisters could do to keep the endless assault of arms at bay, and they were eventually forced to retreat, backpedaling away with haste. When they got to a far enough distance, the sisters exchanged distressed looks. Cottus's hands were like an impenetrable wall, and there was no feasible way to penetrate his skin with strikes. The fact that the monster was a Titan only made the situation worse.
If only Goku and Gohan were here. Diana's mind wandered to thoughts of her family. Her husband and son could both use Ki, which would've been a great asset to this battle. For all her strength and speed, she still lacked the ability to manipulate energy.
"Diana, what are we going to do?" Donna asked, her head turned towards Diana, who was just as clueless as she was.
"I...I don't know," Diana's throat ran dry. Donna always looked to her for answers, and for once, she didn't have any.
A couple of feet away, Cottus's grotesque body waddled as the creature slithered towards Donna and Diana. Its movements were clumsy and awkward as the Titan used its numerous hands to support itself.
"We don't have much time," Donna said, stating the obvious. Cottus would be breathing down their necks in seconds. "If I distract him, do you think you'll be able to find find the Lasso of Truth in the palace?"
Diana blinked and resisted the urge to smack herself. The Lasso of Truth was a tool that she could use to vanquish Cottus. How had she nearly forgotten about it? "If you buy me some time, I will retrieve it, and then together, we'll send this creature back to the underworld."
Donna nodded, and without a further word, she sped off to engage Cottus, meeting the abomination head-on. Wonder Woman watched her sister tackle Cottus and push the Titan back before being engulfed by legions of hands. Donna fought valiantly, but it was all in vain. Diana took one last sorrowful look at her sister and cursed under her breath before blasting off towards the palace. She flew past Cottus, who was too preoccupied to obstruct her. As she neared the torn wall her fight with Nubia had caused, Wonder Woman saw Alkyone and her followers pointing at her in the air.
"Stop her!" The false queen screeched angrily. Myrto and Philomela heeded their liege's orders and followed Diana as she swooped down into the palace.
Diana landed silently, and her footsteps were as quiet as Harpocrates as she raced through the palace. Her surroundings became a blur as she used her super-speed to comb through every single room in the palace. There were hundreds of them, and each room was more opulent than the last. The palace had always been luxurious during Hippolyta's reign, but Alkyone had invested even more time, money, and effort into making the queen's abode a spectacle of greed.
Even the god Plutus would've found the palace too grandiose for his tastes.
Diana's feet eventually carried her into the throne room, and it was there that she saw the Lasso of Truth hanging from the armrest of the queen's throne. A massive flight of ivory stairs led to the royal throne, which was made of solid gold. The throne gleamed in the reflection of the light from the torches that surrounded it from all angles. Diana floated up to the throne and plucked the lasso before buckling it to her belt where it rightfully belonged. She turned and began descending down the long flight of steps but was interrupted by Philomela and Myrto before she made it to the bottom.
"I don't have time for this," Diana scowled and lunged at her two would-be attackers. Two mighty punches caught them off guard before either one could voice their opinions. Myrto's nasal bridge shattered under the weight of her fist, and the blonde was flung to the other side of the room. Diana's other fist hit Philomela directly in the neck, where her adam's apple would've been, crippling the raven-haired woman. She sagged to her knees, choking on her blood before Wonder Woman ended her suffering with a knee to the stomach.
But Myrto was still conscious, and the foolhardy blonde charged at Diana, sword in hand, all the while bleeding all over the floor. Wonder Woman parried her first stab and backhanded Myrto's second one. The lean Amazon grew visibly frustrated and swung with more and more enraged fervor. Diana deflected every strike with ease and yawned loudly, intentionally, to anger Myrto even more.
"Damn you, Diana!" Myrto shouted as she brought her sword down in a horizontal slash. Wonder Woman lazily lifted her arm to block the blow and the blade split in half against one of her bracelets. Myrto wisely retreated, and her quivering legs backed away. Diana gave her no respite and tossed the Lasso of Truth on her, wrapping it around her body. The lasso glowed as the power within it awoke, and Diana forced Myrto to bear witness to all the evil she had wrought. It was too much for her mind to handle, and the Amazon collapsed in an unmoving heap after she let out a shrill cry.
Diana gathered her lasso and examined the throne room. Both of her enemies were unconscious and would pose no further threat for the remainder of her battle. Diana jumped into the air and flew straight through the roof of the building. Pieces of stone crumbled behind her as she raced to assist her sister. By the time Wonder Woman reached her, Donna was a bruised and battered mess.
Donna's healing factor was being stretched to its limit. Every wound Cottus inflicted on her was repaired almost instantly, but the Titan's barrage of attacks never ceased. Her body was healing itself at a rate that was unmaintainable, and several bruises lingered more than they should have. Magic was the source of Donna's healing ability, but neither sister knew how it functioned, and that was incredibly worrisome at this moment.
Diana kicked Cottus from behind to draw the monster's attention. Her foot sank into the ocean of fidgety hands that desperately clung to her legs and feet. Wonder Woman struggled but, with enough effort, managed to rip herself free from the Titan. She flew to the front of the creature and extended a hand to Donna, who gratefully took it and held on to it for dear life. Diana slowly pulled her sister out of Cottus's grip and embraced her warmly once they were out of his reach.
"Thank you," Diana said appreciatively.
"It's nothing; you would have done the same for me," Donna said as she wiggled out of her sister's bone-crunching hug. "What's next?" She was slightly sore but didn't mention it as she gazed down at the gigantic monster.
"I will wrap the lasso around Cottus," Diana lifted it and let it dangle in front of Donna's eyes. "And use the lasso's powers to subjugate him."
The plan sounded simple, but Donna still had her doubts. "Is the lasso big enough to hold him?" Donna questioned. The Lasso of Truth was long enough to wrap around most humans and objects, but Cottus was literally bigger than the palace, and her aerial view of the Titan only punctuated that point.
"You're going to learn something today, sister," Diana said with a sneaky smirk. Donna wanted to say something, but the princess took off before she could, leaving her to her thoughts.
What is she planning?
Diana nosedived from the sky as she zoomed towards Cottus. The gargantuan Titan was too large to evade the attack, not that he would have cared to, and remained as still as stone as the princess rocketed towards him. Diana switched her route at the last moment and took a sharp left turn as she was poised to ram into Cottus's midsection. Thousands of hands extended, nipping at the air as they narrowly missed their mark.
Diana unfastened her lasso and began swinging it as she circled Cottus. The Titan's girth was enormous, and it took her three minutes to make one full rotation around the ancient creature. Alkyone chucked a spear at the princess as she passed Cottus's back, but the steel-tipped weapon soared harmlessly above her head. It struck one of Cottus's innumerable hands, piercing the prehensile in the palm, forming a gash that leaked slimy green fluid. Diana gagged as she watched the unsightly liquid ooze, but Cottus was unfazed and showed no signs of pain.
Diana made three complete rotations around Cottus, and the Lasso of Truth extended each time the string was yanked on. Up above, Donna's eyes were as wide as saucers. Had she known the lasso could stretch, she would've tempered her words earlier. What she witnessed next made her jaw drop. Diana began flying skyward, all the while pulling the rope that was wrapped around her fingers. At first, it appeared as though the Titan would never budge, but with slight strain, Diana lifted the behemoth off the ground.
Alkyone watched in horror as the monster she'd summoned rose higher and higher into the air. The darkness that fell over her and the palace was akin to an eclipse as Wonder Woman dragged the Titan past the clouds. Donna departed the area with haste as Diana ascended closer to where she had formerly hovered. Wonder Woman flew so high that Donna questioned whether her sister was taking the beast into space. It was highly improbable, considering the fact they were trapped in an unknown dimension, but maybe Diana wanted to see how far she could go.
Donna lost track of her sister as Diana reached a mind-boggling altitude. Cottus's body impeded Donna's view of Diana, and all Hippolyta's clone could do now was anxiously ponder what her sister was planning. Donna didn't have to theorize for long; milliseconds later, Cottus plummeted from the sky. The obsidian nightmare was in free fall for several minutes, flailing its countless hands in the air helplessly as gravity guided it towards the plateau above Paradise City. Diana added to the creature's misery and sped toward Cottus, slamming into the Titan as she pushed it towards the ground.
Alkyone was powerless to do anything. Tears slid from her eyes, cascading down scrunched cheeks past grit teeth as fear blossomed in her heart. It had been ages since she'd felt that emotion. Her chest pounded so loudly even the gods in Olympus could hear it. The impending sense of doom was terrifying, and it sucked the breath from her lungs. There was nowhere to run now, and even if there had been, she would've never made it in time.
Diana and Cottus hit the ground with a thunderous splat, and a plume of dust and debris followed in its wake. A gale-force wind that proceeded the impact disintegrated every tile in the royal courtyard and demolished the myriad of columns and pillars that upheld the palace. The various statues of the gods were reduced to ivory rubble. What was left of the palace crumbled underneath the hefty weight of Cottus's body. The top half of the Titan had landed almost directly on top of the palace.
Donna descended from the sky and landed amongst the ruins. Everything was in tatters, and there seemed to be no visible signs of life. She approached Cottus's base apprehensively, and even though the monster had yet to stir, she was still concerned about him attacking her once she let her guard down. She probed one of Titan's arms, kicking it, and it failed to react. She breathed a deep sigh of relief and began the long trek toward the head of Cottus's body.
Donna was halfway there when she suddenly stopped, pausing as she neared the center of the creature's body. The gigantic hole in the Titan's torso had once glowed lustrously, but the red light had now dimmed and given way to darkness. The midnight sea of hands made it difficult to distinguish where the hole began and ended, but Donna realized she was near its top as something began to rustle. Hippolyta's clone had nothing to arm herself with and resorted to shielding herself in case of an attack.
She raised her arms, crossing them over her face, and readied herself for the unknown. But much to her surprise, nothing pounced on her. She lowered her arms in slight confusion but then smiled as she saw Diana climbing out of Cottus's body. She ran toward her sister, and this time she was the one to encase her sibling in a tight, joint squeaking hug.
"You did it, sister; we are victorious!" Donna lauded as she patted her sister on the back."I've never been prouder to share the same blood as you."
It was the biggest compliment Donna had ever given to her, but it felt unwarranted. "I would love to share your zeal and echo those sentiments, but I'm not sure Cottus is dead."
Donna looked over her shoulder at the Titan, who was still motionless. "I understand your concerns, but he is out of our way for now," She separated from her sister and quickly scanned the vicinity, failing to spot the false-queen. "Alkyone has to be dead. There's no way she could've survived Cottus's fall."
That was one thing both sisters could agree on. Diana quickly nodded her head. "I'm sure her body is here somewhere, below Cottus's body or amongst the rubble."
"It will take an eternity to rebuild the palace," Donna noted as her eyes fell upon the once magnificent building.
"That's a subject for another time," Diana dismissed her sister's words. "Alkyone might be dead, but we still have her followers to worry about. Hermes said he would assist us, but he….."
"Hermes will be of no help to you!"
An ominous voice shouted from above. Any hint of sunlight was snatched from the sky as the heavens began to darken. The waters near Themyscira's shores started to rise in an all too familiar fashion, beckoning to their master's call.
"Hera!" Diana and Donna said in unison as they looked up.
