April fool's day! Today actually lines up perfectly for what I have in store for Elseworlds. I didn't intend for it to match up like this, but I'm not complaining. Hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: I don't own The Flash.
Oliver came to suddenly, which was strange as he'd no recollection of passing out. It was as though he'd blacked out or teleported and reappeared in STAR Labs with Barry's team talking amongst themselves.
"… most of the foster care records, but there's one that I just can't seem to gain access to no matter what I do. I've sent it to Felicity to try her best. I'm waiting for her. In the meantime you can check over all the others." Cisco was saying.
"Did you notice any mental illnesses? Cicada was experiencing hallucinations. I'd probably guess schizophrenia considering the age." Caitlin said.
"I didn't think to check." Cisco said dubiously. "Why didn't you mention this earlier? It would have sped up the search a lot more."
Caitlin shrugged. "Oops?"
"Oops? That's all you have to say? Oops?"
"Can you check it or not?"
"I'm checking. I'm checking." Cisco mumbled. "Okay, of the cases I've unlocked, 12 have mental illnesses, and another 22 have a family history of it. Most of it is anxiety though."
"Cross those out." Caitlin ordered. Cisco just nodded in response. Oliver felt this was a good time to jump in.
"I'm sorry, but do any of you have an idea as to what I'm doing here?"
"You're here to help us identify Cicada." Caitlin furrowed her brow in confusion.
"How am I supposed to do that? Who's Cicada?" Oliver asked.
"The metahuman who's been killing other metahumans and has threatened our lives on more than one occasion? Ringing a bell?" Cisco said.
"No." Oliver shook his head. "I have no idea how I even got here in the first place."
"You ran here. Are you feeling okay Barry?" Cisco asked.
"I'm not Barry." Oliver revealed. "I'm Oliver. Oliver Queen."
Barry was taken by surprise by his new surroundings. He was pretty sure he was in the Arrow cave but he had no idea how he'd gotten here. He was fast, but he was usually at least aware of where he was at all times. Barry didn't have a lot of time to think about it as Diggle started to attack him.
Attack was a strong word. They were sparring.
As Barry tried to dodge, he noticed he didn't have access to his speed. How had that happened? Instead, instinct kicked in and Barry weaved into Diggle's offense and struck him in the chest, catching Diggle off guard and delivered a roundhouse kick to his side, sending Diggle to the ground.
"Damn Oliver. Did you have to hit me so hard? We're just sparring," Diggle groaned.
"I-I didn't mean to do that. It just kind of happened," Barry stuttered. Where did that come from? Barry was usually clumsy with such tactics, his speed making up for his amateur moves. What he did was skill he didn't have. "Wait, did you say Oliver? Where's he at?"
"Oliver, stop joking around. It doesn't suit you,"
"Are you joking? Dig, it's me," Barry furrowed his brow in confusion.
"I know who you are. But I'm starting to get concerned it's you who doesn't know who they are," Diggle said in concern.
"I don't…" Barry looked down at himself to see his naked torso, but it wasn't his exactly. The shape of which was definitely his, but it was covered in Oliver's multiple scars and tattoos. How did that happen? "I'm Oliver Queen,"
"Yeah. You okay man?" Diggle asked.
"I need to make a call. Excuse me," Barry excused himself and exited the lair.
Barry put on a random shirt and found 'Oliver's' phone, but it didn't get him far as he was unable to unlock it. Barry groaned. "Of course,"
Fortunately Barry was saved when a gust of wind appeared, signaling the arrival of a speedster, only it was Oliver who was busy stamping out the flames on his jacket. When it was out, Oliver looked up at him. "Please tell me you know,"
"Oliver," Barry confirmed.
Oliver sighed in relief. "Thank god. We need to talk,"
Oliver and Barry clumped together in front of a large screen, multiple pictures and news articles pulled up about them. Everything was exactly the same, the only difference being their names had been swapped and they had apparently lived each other's lives.
"So this is kind of funny, don't you think?" Barry grinned.
"Exactly what part of this whole situation do you perceive as funny?" Oliver grumbled.
"Well I'm pretty sure there have been points in both our lives where we wished the other could walk a mile in our shoes." Barry smirked. "It's a little funny how we've somehow stolen the other's identity. You can admit it,"
"Maybe I'll find it funny when we've found a way to reverse this. Or at least figure out how this happened. You're telling me you're not worried about this?"
"Well sure, but between the two of us, I'm sure we'll figure it out. We were due for a team up anyway." Barry dismissed him.
"So you're not at all concerned about the fact that aside from the two of us, everybody thinks you're Oliver Queen and I'm Barry Allen?" Oliver raised an eyebrow.
"No. This is going to be like a vacation. I get to take a break from being me for a bit. My life is stressful right now man."
"And you think my life isn't stressful?"
"It's a different kind of stress. It'll be refreshing tackling your problems for a change. You can try to relax, you know. No need to worry so much."
"I'm married to Caitlin now." Oliver plainly stated.
Barry froze for a moment before a new resolve entered his eyes. "Vacation's over. We need to fix this,"
Oliver ran both him and Barry back to STAR Labs. They were the ones more well equipped to deal with what was happening. Oliver didn't have the mindset of a speedster, but it seemed he did have the muscle memory Barry had developed and was starting to get the hang of it.
"Hey Oliver. Barry, why did you bring him here?" Cisco asked.
"We've got something we need to tell you. I'm not actually Barry. I'm Oliver and he's Barry," Oliver pointed at Barry.
"You're not making sense. You're Barry. He's Oliver," Julian said.
"No, that's what you've all been made to think. History has been altered or something, where I'm Oliver and he's Barry, but it's not. That's not it at all," Barry implored.
"I'm still not convinced. If what you're saying is true, how is it that 'Oliver' has Barry's speed? Or that 'Barry' has Oliver's bodily scars?" Cisco pointed out.
"We're not sure about that. We thought our conscience had swapped but we still look like each other. We've swapped lives and we need to switch it back." Barry said.
"Okay, but first; tell me something only Barry would know." Cisco demanded, pointing at 'Oliver'.
"Dude, okay I've watched Wrath of Kahn with you like 25 times." Barry said.
"And…?"
"And everytime at the end you turn to me and say 'I have been and always shall be your friend.'"
"Barry!" And like that, Cisco was convinced as he embraced his friend. "What happened to you man?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out," Barry said again.
"That's what convinced him?" Oliver asked himself.
"Hold on just a second." Caitlin shouted. "Are you trying to tell me I don't know my own husband? You're going to have to do better than some trivia facts to convince me that this is actually happening."
"Caitlin," Barry said softly. "Mrs. Frosty, listen to me. Listen to my words. You know me." Barry tried to reach for her but she flinched away from his touch. "Forget about what you're seeing. I'm Barry. I'm your Barry. Things are messed up right now, but just know that my love for you will never change. Look with your heart, not your eyes. You know what I'm saying is true."
Caitlin paused and looked, really looked at the person claiming to be her husband. She looked into his eyes, seeing his soul behind them. She saw the vulnerability behind them, the raw emotion coming from them and it was all directed at her. And she knew. This was the person her soul, her entire being belonged to. "Barry," she breathed and wrapped her arms around him.
"So, do we believe them now?" Julian asked.
"This isn't the weirdest thing to happen around here. Believe me, this is about right on schedule," Joe said to him.
"Right on schedule? You're actually able to predict when something of this caliber happens?" Julian exclaimed in disbelief.
"Oh yeah. It happens right around now. Late November and early December are a hot zone for this kind of thing." Cisco confirmed.
"Really? Have you ever figured out why?"
"No. In this line of work, sometimes there are things you need to question, and others you just need to roll with the punches."
"People! Less talk on the mysteries of the universe. I'd like to have my own identity back by the end of the century," Oliver shouted.
"I see it now. That's not something Barry would say," Julian softly commented to Cisco.
"Maybe we should check on the Legends and Kara. With the Legends time traveling, they might have a better idea of what's going on and with Kara on an alternate Earth, she might not have been affected by whatever happened." Caitlin said.
"Finally. Something of a plan." Oliver exclaimed. "Barry and I will go check on Kara and explain the whole situation. You guys try to contact the Waverider."
Cisco tossed Oliver one of their interdimensional extrapolators that had been pre-programmed for Earth-38. "Do that you will. Finding the cause of this incident in the meantime, I will be. Meditate on this, I must."
"Why are you talking like that?" Julian noted his manner of talking having changed to resemble Yoda from Star Wars.
"I'm basically going to be tapping into the Force like a Jedi for a vision of what happened. Let me have this," Cisco whined.
"You've been doing a Star Wars marathon?" Caitlin commented.
"It's a good series!"
Meanwhile, the Legends were dealing with their own problems.
"STAR Labs is trying to contact us."
"It must be that time of the year for our crossover."
"Should we go?"
Simultaneously, they all said "Nah,"
"This isn't right," Charlie muttered to herself after seeing them and walked back out.
Surprisingly, Kara wasn't actually in National City. Instead she was visiting her cousin Clark and his wife Lois at the Kent family farm. It made Barry question whether the universe was sentient enough to know exactly where they needed to go and the person they were hoping to find, without them knowing where she was. Because they definitely didn't.
"Barry! Oliver!" Kara shouted her greetings. "It's great to see you. How did you know where I was? I didn't tell any of you guys where I was,"
"Cisco set the directions. You're going to have to ask him. Just to be clear, you know that I'm Oliver and he's Barry?" Oliver asked for some confirmation. Barry just nodded along.
"Yeah. Why would I think otherwise?" Kara asked.
In order to clarify, Oliver vibrated his hand at extreme speeds, displaying that he'd somehow gained Barry's powers.
"That's new," Kara commented. "I'm guessing this is a recent development?"
Oliver and Barry sighed in harmony. "So you know. Everybody else in our world thinks we're the other. It must not affect beyond our universe,"
"So you need my help? As you can probably tell, I've got some time off," Kara stated, gesturing to the fact she wasn't currently in National City.
"That would be much appreciated. We have no idea what we're up against but if they have the power to alter reality, we're going to need all the help we can get,"
The trio of heroes returned to Earth-1 where Oliver's team had also joined. "Hey, no need to catch us up. Oliver and Barry's lives have been swapped and now we need to figure out how to reverse it," Felicity said after noticing their arrival.
"Hey. The Legends here yet?" Barry asked.
"I've tried calling them but they're not picking up. I'm gonna keep trying, but it seems like they're leaving us on our own for this one." Caitlin said.
"How about Cisco? Did he find anything?" Oliver asks, noting the meta tucked away in the corner in a meditative stance with his goggles on.
"He's been like that the entire time." Diggle informs them. "Should we be concerned?"
At that moment, Cisco stood up and removed his goggles. "I think I've got something,"
Cisco explained what he'd seen, but he admitted he couldn't see much. It was as though there was a fog blocking his vision of what was happening. Nothing specific, but Cisco was able to get a general idea of what happened.
There was an object that resembled a book. But when it opened, a bright light was being emitted and suddenly there was something different. Nothing tangible to see, but just a feeling in the air.
"Could you see who it was?" Caitlin asked.
"No, the person's face was shrouded. Which is weird since this has never happened to me before. I was always able to clearly see every part of my vibe, it was just deciphering it and finding which part to focus on was the problem. Not the lack of focus." Cisco states.
"Performance issues. Who hasn't been there? I know I have." Felicity nodded solemnly.
The statement was received about as well as could be expected, with everyone looking at her strangely.
"Foot in mouth Felicity. We said we were going to work on it," Felicity mumbled to herself.
"Okay. If we can't figure out who did this, maybe we can figure out where it happened. Did you see anything to indicate where this took place?" Barry asked.
"Maybe… a school uniform?" Cisco thought back.
"A school uniform? We're dealing with a child?" Oliver asked.
"Actually when you think of it, it makes a little bit of sense. What other kind of person would do something so juvenile? A juvenile. This is all just some big prank from a little kid," Caitlin realized.
"So there's some kid out there that found a reality altering book and the first thing they did was make Barry and I swap lives?" Oliver asked.
"Not the craziest thing out there. Remember Vixen? She got an amulet that allowed her to wield the power of animals." Barry commented.
"Barry," Oliver sighed.
"I'm just saying, we've encountered a similar situation." Barry shrugged. "So all we need to do is grab the book from this kid, change everything back to normal and then lock up or destroy the book to stop it from ever being used again."
"That's just the beginning, if we can even accomplish that. Maybe there are more of these books. Maybe someone gave this kid this book. There are other things we need to find out as well." Oliver pointed out.
"We can figure all of that out once we get the book." Barry waved him off. "Where can we find this kid?"
"I think the uniform said 'Gotham Academy'." Cisco said.
"Guess we're going to Gotham City." Oliver said.
Oliver, Barry, Kara, and Cisco were sent to Gotham in order to track down the adolescent that had somehow obtained this all powerful book.
"So now that we're here, how do we continue? How are we going to find either the book or the kid if we don't even know what they look like?" Kara asked.
"That's why I'm here. Now that I'm closer to the sight of what happened, I should be able to conjure a clearer picture of what happened." Cisco declared.
The four of them ducked into an alley for some privacy in order for Cisco to summon a vibe. He placed his goggles in front of his eyes and turned them on. Letting out a sigh, he let the vision come to him.
Cisco was transported to an afternoon. The sun is hanging in the sky. The area wasn't very populated. He was at a construction site. A kid was coming this way. A boy, maybe 15 years in age. A sudden crash, a new hole appeared in the dirt. The boy rushed to see what it could be. Reaching the hole and seeing a brown book. Not damaged at all despite the heavy impact. Curious, the boy took it and placed it in his book bag.
Cisco tried to get a good look at him, but was still frustratingly unclear what he looked like.
A jump and Cisco was in a bedroom. The sun had set. The boy hunched over his desk. This was familiar. A white glow emanated from the open book and suddenly things were different in a way that could not be seen with one's eyes.
Cisco returned back to his own head. "This way. I know where the kid got the book. We can start there,"
So Cisco led the way to where he saw the book fall out of the sky and land. And exactly where he said, they all saw a hole in the ground with a square shaped imprint that might have resembled that of a book. "Okay, so this is where the thing came from. But where?" Oliver asked.
"What are the chances that it just came out of the sky?" Barry asked.
"Come on? What are the chances of that?" Oliver rolled his eyes at the absurdity of the notion.
Kara coughed loudly, drawing all attention to her. "Pretty high actually."
"Right." Oliver nodded, remembering they were harboring an alien that fell from the sky. "Well what are the chances that it happens again?"
"I am the second time." Kara corrected.
"Okay, clearly I know nothing about space. Was there a third time?" Oliver sighed.
"An alien prison ship," Kara confirmed.
Oliver huffed in frustration. "I'm just glad our interactions with outer space aliens are reserved to you and the Dominators. Where do we go from here?"
Cisco took a look around, trying to familiarize himself with the area from his vision. "This kid was coming from this direction." Cisco pointed to one side of the street. "Meaning he would be heading over there," Cisco shifted his position to the other.
"That doesn't exactly narrow it down," Barry said.
"We'll head there. Hopefully I'll pick up something the closer we get to it," Cisco put his goggles back on to increase his sensitivity to the disruptions to reality on the off chance he would receive another vision of what happened.
They followed the trail. It wasn't clear and nobody knew where they were going. They made for a very odd group but none of the citizens of Gotham tried to stop them. Finally they reached a house. Then another house. And then two more houses after that.
"This one. This one for sure." Cisco excitedly pointed to an average looking home.
"Are you sure? Because that's what you said about the first four houses." Kara raised an eyebrow dubiously.
"Lucky number 5. I'm like… 54% positive this is the one." Cisco said.
At that moment, a dragon burst out of the roof with what appeared to be a person sitting on its back. The reptile let out a screech, a breath of flame into the air before soaring into the sky.
"Like I said. 100% positive this is the house." Cisco said.
"The three of us will go into the house, talk to someone, get an idea of how this happened." Oliver gestured to himself and Barry and Cisco. "Kara-"
"I got it. Go after the fire breathing dragon and get the kid back on solid ground." Kara launched herself into the air to give chase to the flying scaly beast.
"Alright, let's go check on the house," Oliver said.
With that said, the three of them approached the house hoping for some answers. They took in the destroyed ceiling and spread out, looking for anyone still in the house.
Barry managed to find a woman wedged underneath some rubble. "I found someone here!" he called out. Barry went to push the debris off of her as Oliver and Cisco appeared, pulling the woman out and dragging her out of the house.
"Hey, are you okay? Is there anybody else in there?" Oliver asked. He could have sped through the house looking for any survivors but he still had yet to feel comfortable moving at such speeds and in extremely tight corners. He didn't know how Barry did it.
"No. It's just my son and I living here. And you just saw him fly away on his dragon." the woman sighed as though this were a regular occurrence.
"This doesn't bother you at all?" Cisco asked suspiciously.
"No?" the woman furrowed her brow in confusion. "Should it?"
"How long has your son had this dragon?" Barry asked.
The woman developed a look of concentration as though the answer were right in front of her but she couldn't seem to say it. "I don't know," she finally settled. "One day he just had one and I never thought ill of it. I can't remember when that happened."
"What's your name ma'am?" Cisco asked.
"Annie. Annie Fanal." Annie introduced herself.
"Okay Annie. And your son? Do you have any idea what he's doing on the back of a dragon?" Barry asked.
"His name is Jared. I don't understand. For the past day, there are so many things that have happened that I can't recall being feasible beyond yesterday."
"Can we get some examples?" Oliver asks.
"There was a pool that appeared in my backyard, another room in the house when we've never had renovations. At one point, I think I remember Jared having a little sister that I didn't give birth to. And then the next second, she's gone." Annie lists off.
"So Jared changed things, but only for this day. Events that didn't exist beyond today. That could mean he didn't think to change events that have happened in the past. That's why nobody remembers the things happening, but don't think it strange." Oliver states.
"So Jared isn't really thinking beyond the present. Not ideal, but could be worse," Barry says.
"I just hope Kara can get the book away from the kid before any more fantastical creatures appear out of thin air," said Cisco.
"What book are you talking about?" Annie asks.
In the air, Kara was busy chasing down the flying fire breathing war machine. There didn't seem to be any specific destination in mind as they were just moving in a straight line with minor turns here and there.
Kara eventually caught up to them and tried to shout "Hey! Could you land? We need to talk about this!"
The boy on the dragon's neck was young. He was dressed in some kind of bodysuit, a helmet, and goggles. Her shout caught his attention and he turned to her. Pulling on the dragon's horns like a horse's reins and the dragon stopped, flapping its wings in order to maintain its position in the air.
Now that they weren't going anywhere, Kara could take in the dragon with more clarity. The first thing she noticed was its green scales covering its body. And like a bat, its wings were its arms. Long fingers with skin between them. Sharp talons on its toes. Spikes protruding from its back all the way down the large muscular tail which swayed back and forth.
"What do you want?" the boy shouted, bringing Kara's attention back to the situation at hand.
"I need to talk to you about something. A book you found the other day." Kara declared.
"I've got lots of books. You need to be more specific." the boy retorted.
"You know which book I'm talking about. You need to give me that book and let me change everything back to the way it was."
"Wait, how do you know the changes I've made? That shouldn't be possible." Jared furrowed his brow in confusion. "I'm not letting you take the book from me."
"I understand how you feel, but you need to give it up. Nobody should have that much power. Just give it to me. Everything will go back to normal," Kara tried to convince him.
"Normal is boring! Why would I want that? With the book, I can literally do anything I want. I'm omnipotent! And you can't stop me!" Jared shouted. He pushed down on the horns, causing the dragon's maw to open and commanded "Fire!" The rush of flames escaped from the back of the dragon's throat, and all of it was heading directly towards her.
In response, Kara released a breath of icy wind that met the flames, causing a rush of steam to appear, obscuring her vision. Switching to her thermal vision, Kara scanned the area but the boy and the reptile were gone with no indication of where they were.
Kara sighed at being forced to give up her chase and returned to the house where she left the boys at.
"So Jared's really just doing whatever he wants with that book, damn the consequences." Cisco summarizes the situation. "I honestly can't say I'm that surprised."
"Did he mention why he did this?" Oliver gestured to himself and Barry.
"Nothing." Kara shook her head. "But from the impression I got of him, it's really because he could and for some laughs. No sinister plan behind it. Probably didn't think to change you back afterwards."
"Well this isn't funny. I want my identity back." Barry said.
"Well how are we going to convince him? The kid's got the universe in his pocket. And I don't exactly feel comfortable attacking a kid." Cisco said.
"We don't need to attack him, we just need to steal the book from him. If we can manage that, we can change everything back to how it was by ourselves."
"So how do we do this?" Kara asked.
"We're going to need to call in everyone." Oliver declared.
This was the first chapter of Elseworlds and I hope you liked it. The day and chapter title make a little more sense, right? Because the first bit of Elseworlds is basically what I think of is the biggest prank in the history of the Arrowverse, switching Barry and Oliver's lives.
But what else are you going to do with ultimate power? Use it for your own gain and entertainment sounds pretty typical. Besides, I think it makes more sense as to why Barry and Oliver got switched. Did we even really get an explanation for why it happened in canon? Doing it for the sake of doing it sounds childish, which is why I made it childish.
Obviously there are benefits and disadvantages for having the Book of Destiny in the hands of a child. They're not really thinking ahead and important things will be ignored because they're not interesting enough. So not too much has changed, just what my OC Jared decides. He can do it, he just doesn't because it doesn't affect him. But like wise men say, few people know an evil greater than the mind of a child. Something like that anyway.
I'll see you all next week for the next part of Elseworlds.
