Something That Could Have Been

"Mom, Luke's looking at you," Rory Gilmore told her mom in a hushed voice.

"He is not," Lorelai said, her eyes darting over to where Luke Danes stood, behind the counter as usual.

"Don't look!" Rory hissed, placing a hand on her mother's. "He's coming over."

"Well, of course he is. I'm almost out of coffee. I get a refill."

"Hey, Luke," Rory greeted.

"Rory, Lorelai," Luke smiled.

Rory nudged Lorelai under the table.

"Hey, Luke," Lorelai said, shooting her daughter a look.

He nodded. "More coffee?"

"Yes, please."

"Rory?"

"No thanks. I have to get to school."

"But you don't leave for another ten minutes."

"I've got stuff to do. You know, the Franklin."

"Alright...See you later, sweets."

"Bye Mom, bye Luke."

"Bye," they chorused.

Luke turned away and Lorelai almost called him back over to ask if he had been staring at her a minute ago. Not like it mattered...She wouldn't have cared, but it's almost like she needed to hear him say he was looking at her. She didn't necessarily trust Rory and Miss Patty and the others when it came to her and Luke. They had this weird fantasy in their head that Luke liked her. The other night Rory even went as far as accusing Lorelai of liking him, also. Merciless teasing had been involved, and Lorelai remembered defending herself numerous times.

It felt weird to think of her and Luke like that. What would Luke be like on a date? 'Woah, hold on there. Where did that come from?' She wondered if he dressed up for a date. Did he wear his backwards baseball cap? Did he even own a suit?

Lorelai glanced over at Luke again, and he looked up and half-smiled at her.

"Did you want anything else?" he called.

"No, I'm fine," she replied. She held his gaze for a moment longer, before turning to the window.

She didn't know how Luke felt about her, or how she felt about him for that matter, but she knew one thing" If they both kept avoiding the subject when it came up, they'd lose their chance at something that could have been great. But for now, that's all it was—something that could have been.
