Disclaimer: Harry Potter belongs to J. K. Rowling. This story was not
written for money, but only for my amusement. It is the result of a rather
annoying bunny that I didn't feel like killing, only subduing, hence the
short size.
He felt a tap on his shoulder and stiffened in surprise. Usually his classmates wouldn't disturb his studies- one of the benefits of being an "antisocial prick", he supposed. He turned to see he would bother him, glaring in a way that made first years flee.
The first thing he saw was a feminine hand with candy-colored nails. Only one girl at Hogwarts wore nail varnish- ridiculous stuff- and he had never thought she'd descend from her group of golden trouble makers to talk to likes of him. But here she was, the mudblood Lily Evans, her practically blood-red hair pulled into a tight tail, her green eyes not flashing for once and though she smiled, it was a nervous smile. Good.
"Well, what do you want?"
"Thing is, Sev, I-"
"Do not call me that." He gritted his teeth. How dare she act so friendly, when she was friends with those idiots who had tried to kill him.
"Sorry- Severus- everyone knows that you're the best in the school at potions. I've been very barely keeping up. I'm totally lost- I know what all my assignments are, but don't understand them. I need help." She walked around the library table he was at, and sat across from him. She looked into his eyes, daring him to break her gaze. "I was wondering. would you be willing to help me?" Her hand moved across the table to the book he'd been reading, and rested on his.
He jerked his hand back. For all that Lily looked like a walking flame, she felt like ice. He noticed a hurt expression into her eyes. Good. Let her think he hated her. That way she'd never get to know him.
When she spoke again her voice was quieter. "I'd be willing to pay, if that's what you want."
"Why did you come to me? Your little lover-boy isn't stupid. Or Lupin, he seems to have some clever moments."
"They'd get distracted- want to talk. You dislike me, so the focus would stay on the work. Besides, you're the best at potions, but don't you want to get better? Tutor me, and you can show just how good you are."
Severus smiled, the twisted sneer his classmates hated. "When you put it that way Evans, I don't see how I can refuse. And you're wrong- I don't dislike you. I hate you. Why are you waiting? Get your book out and we'll get started."
Lily looked like she might start crying, but she did as she was told. She explained where she had last understood, and he began to reteach her. It would be nice getting to spend some time with her, especially since no one else in the school would understand.
