Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling does.
Today was the celebration for All Hallow's Eve, or as the muggles call it Halloween. Before classes started, Rose made her way towards her House head after breakfast.
"Professor McGonagall"
The stern witch turned towards her, giving her a nod in askance.
"Professor, as you know, today is the day my parents were…" she choked up a bit, she already knew they were dead, but this is the first time she knew when, and how. It was more emotional than she thought. McGonagall's eyes softened a bit at that. "I was wondering if it would be possible for me to go to their graves so that I can give my respects. It could be after classes, and I will be back for the feast" She added the last part quickly as though afraid her request might be refused.
It wasn't as though the professor would refuse her. She spoke with the headmaster, who had listened to the request as they were sitting close to each other. He agreed, under the stipulation that a teacher accompanies her.
"Of course, Miss Potter. I shall accompany you after your last class today. Which I assume to be Charms. I will come to pick you up then"
"Thank you, Professor" Rose smiled happily. She walked back towards her dorms to get her books for today's classes. She thanked Link again for the idea.
Rose was in charms looking around. A kind of nervous excitement filled her. She both dreaded and anticipated the end of the class. Restless as she was, she couldn't help but cast her eyes everywhere. They were learning the levitation charm. Most of them were, Link already mastered the spell, as he held a heavy book afloat. To the delight of the charms professor. He was awarded 30 points for Ravenclaw, 10 for the feather, and another 20 for the book. He looked so at ease with it. (She would be shocked to learn that Link is deliberately holding back so as to not arouse suspicion)
She saw him approach various students in order to help them with their spell casting. It was admirable. However, not everyone shared her opinion. Ron Weasley was decidedly not happy with him. They may be friends, but he just can't stand this know-it-all. He just keeps showing everyone up. His jealousy just kept increasing every time they shared a class. This golden-blue-boy just stealing the spotlight. He was great at everything. He kept stewing in his petty jealousy for a while. It wasn't until he was approached by Link, did he really feel like he was going to blow up. He kept it in.
When they were finally out of class, Ron couldn't hold it in anymore. He started ranting to Seamus and Dean, unaware of the two students right behind him.
"Honestly, He's such a nightmare. Such a bloody know-it-all. Can he not go around the classroom flaunting how great he was? He's worse than Malfoy sometimes. Why am I even friends with such a bookworm?"
While the two were nodding half-heartedly, they didn't really have a problem with the Ravenclaw. Yeah, he was smart, but he didn't lord it over everyone's head like Ron seems to be suggesting. He was helpful. They just didn't want to get into an argument with the temperamental redhead. However, a startled gasp interrupted them. When the boys turned around, they paled when they realized the object of Ron's rant was standing behind them with Rose Potter right next to him. She was the one that gasped.
Before the boys started scrambling for an excuse, or for Rose to start berating them, Link spoke calmly, a gentle smile never leaving his face.
"Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It's no problem" He was a Legendary Archmage. How could he be affected by the rants of a child? He can't be bothered with the opinions of the masses. "However, as you so wish it, I will not assist you any longer" That did not mean he was not petty. His childish hormones did alter his personality slightly. He was more petty and sarcastic than he was before.
The two boys besides Ron were startled, then paled when they realized there would be no assistance anymore of the years smartest. They started resenting the redhead slightly.
While the incident was over quickly, it opened Rose's eyes to the nature of Weasley's true nature. At least subconsciously. He would stay as a casual friend at most, as she can't trust someone that reminds her of Dudley.
She later followed Professor McGonagall as she brought her away from Hogwarts.
There was an afternoon sun, it was slightly chilly. Rose was kneeling before two well kept Gravestones. They were her Father and Mother's. She stayed silent for a while. Professor McGonagall was just a few steps away, her eyes moist.
She didn't know what to say. This was the first time she saw physical evidence of their existence. It wasn't until that thought occurred did she almost break down, realizing that she didn't know what her parents looked like. Her tears smearing her face, she had removed her glasses.
She had always hoped, wished, and prayed that her family wasn't really dead. That they would come and pick her up from her dreadful relatives. But it never happened. She eventually came to accept her fate, that she was the daughter of two drunkards that probably didn't even want her. However, here and now, she came to the beautiful realization and acceptance that she did have parents. They did love her, so much so they sacred their lives for her safety. Although she would have preferred if they had stayed alive, she was grateful that her parents loved her so much.
So for the first time in her life, Rose grieved. She grieved her parents' death, she grieved the life she could have had. She cried. She cleansed herself of her sadness. Just when she was about to leave she finally spoke.
"I really wished you were here, to guide me and love me. I made friends, I'm sure you would like him. I really hope you are proud of me"
When she was done and was about to stand up, a breeze swept through the graveyard. It was in the middle of Autumn, so it should be really cold. It was, McGonagall got a slight chill. Rose, however, felt different when the breeze hit her. It was a gentle touch embracing her, it kept caressing her as though from a loving hand. Her hair was also waving about similar to having a hand go through them. She felt a warmth she only felt through a hug she had with Link, but warmer. Her eyes felt a bit moister at that moment, she was sure, so very sure, that the breeze just now was her parents giving her a final goodbye.
"Bye"
She finally stood up and approached the Professor.
"We can go back now"
"Very well Miss Potter"
"Professor"
"Yes?"
"Thank you"
"You are welcome dear"
With that, they left back to Hogwarts.
Link had always been the very picture of calm. He had forced himself to grow as such. Before his attainment in magic, he was but a bastard. He was disdained by nobility and commoners alike. He didn't have many talents, especially not manual ones. His only gift was his mind. However, in the world of Firumen, a genius mind doesn't count for much unless you can back it up with power. Either Political, Martial, or magical. Thankfully he had a talent for magic as well, otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to utilize the first two due to his status.
Nonetheless, since his arrival in this realm, he has been experiencing some changes. His great intellect was infused into the body of a child, with a child's brain, and impulses. Although not major, changes did in fact occur. He is far less bloodthirsty. He has no worries about the horrors of war. He had two loving parents. They added a sense of calm serenity, and humor to his life. He was thankful for it.
Let's not forget that for the first time in his new life, he has a true friend. Like Eliard. He was fond of her. Hopefully, she would be cheered up at the feast. Speaking of which, he should make his way there.
He sat at the Ravenclaw table, chatting with a few of his classmates. They were cordial and friendly. Similar to his friends in the muggle world. Friends but not very close.
Rose had just entered the great hall. She made her way towards the Ravenclaw table and sat right next to Link (They alternate seats every now and then, she found the female company at Ravenclaw more pleasant than the gossip duo at Gryffindor). Beaming with joy. She had some closure with her parents' death. She feels untethered.
"How was it?"
"It was good. Thank you"
"Anytime"
They continued their chat. They ate and enjoyed the day. Not long after, Rose was feeling really tired, it was an emotionally draining day. She excused herself and made her way towards her dorm. Lost in thought.
Link stayed behind with his housemates, enjoying the night. It was almost 10minutes later that their festivities were put on ice by the doors of the Great Hall slamming open. The out of breath DADA Professor was wheezing and gasping, he seemed as though a single breeze might knock him over.
"Troll(Gasp)… There is a Troll in the Dungeons(Gasp)… Just thought you should know"
He immediately keeled over in a faint, triggering chaos amongst the students. Link narrowed his eyes at the man. His acting was almost flawless, only his fall gave away his act. He didn't know for what purpose, but the stench of Dark Magic was stronger than a month ago. In any case, it didn't matter right now. Rose was a bit spacey when she left. She might not have gone directly to the dorms. He would have to look for her.
"Silence!" Dumbledore thundered, silencing the panicking students. "Calm down, we will immediately investigate the whereabouts of the Troll. For now, please make your way to your dorm rooms, Prefects, please lead the way. I'll also assign two teachers to accompany the students of House Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Their dorms are in the Dungeons after all. Now make haste"
While the houses were filing away towards their dorms, Link slipped away silently. He can sense that Rose is in the less used part of Hogwarts. She seems to be moving fast… the troll. Eyes widening in shock, Link took off at his top speed towards Rose.
Still lost in thought, Rose was wandering around the castle. For the first time in a long time, she was at peace. She was just enjoying the moment in all its simplicity.
She smelt it before she saw it. It had the aroma of a mixture of multiple rotten foods, mixed together into a horrible mish-mash of disgusting scents. When she looked up, she discovered it looked as bad as it smelled. She gagged.
She was struck dumb with the shock of meeting such a massive being. It turned its large head towards her. Facing her, the troll started running towards her, roaring.
The roar was what finally spurned her out of her stupor. Rose started running. It was faster than her, she was panicking but she managed to keep a calm mind. Somehow.
She started running in zig-zags, confusing the troll. She utilized sharp turns to slow it down. She didn't have the time to think to use a spell. With incredible courage, Rose managed to lead the troll towards a more remote area of the school.
Hardly anyone could do what she just did, and not just those of her age group. Witches and Wizards of all ages would be hard-pressed to accomplish what she did. Not everyone knows how to incapacitate a troll after-all.
She kept running, sprinting really, for about 5 minutes. She was out of breath, but she dared not stop. She could not scream, as that would disturb her rhythm. 'Where is everyone? I don't want to die! Where are the teachers?' She screamed in her mind.
She was on her last legs. She didn't want to die, but that is what is about to happen. She was breathing heavily, she saw black spots. She was going beyond her limits. She turned a corner.
"Rose!"
Just when she thought it was all over, she heard a shout. Hope bloomed. She didn't even take a second to see where she was heading. To see if there was anyone besides her friend. She had an adrenaline rush. She pushed forward with all her might. She ran towards the end of the corridor where the shout came from.
The troll right behind her turned the corner two seconds after her. It hit the wall to keep its balance. It started after her. It lifted its club. Rose was slowing. It just needed to bring its arm down.
Link turned the corner, and relief flooded his system as he saw Rose safe running. He shouted.
"Rose!"
He wanted her to run towards him. She did. He paled when he saw the troll behind her. He ran towards her.
While he ran, he prepared his mind. He was entering his hyper intensive mental usage. A state of mind in which time will stretch, and he could exert his full magical potential. It was a state of mind very few people could attain, even amongst the Legendary Mages of his old world.
He tried to remember all he knows about a Troll. They were large, strong, and fast. They were magic-resistant and bloodthirsty. Their weaknesses were that they were dim-witted and they weren't nimble and agile. They were also easily trapped.
He stopped moving when he was 2 seconds away from Rose, and 4 seconds away from the Troll.
"Land Lock"
That was the first spell. It's a spell from his old world. It's a level 1 trap-spell. You aim at the ground and imbue it with the magic. When someone steps on it, depending on the speed he was moving at, they would experience a backlash equivalent to their momentum. The faster one was, the worse the effect. It took 0.8 seconds to cast and deploy the spell.
The troll stepped on the mark and tumbled to the ground. His grip on the club loosened. The reason nothing worse happened was due to the Troll's strong constitution and his resistance to magic. All that contributed to the fact that he only stumbled.
That was enough.
His second spell flew right after. He transfigured the club into heavy ropes. They traveled immediately towards the troll's feet. They tied them up and forced the stumble to be a fall. The process took 1.2 seconds.
Rose was just passing by him. Still running forward.
The troll started sliding on the ground. Still conscious. He waited for a second for the magical beast to get a bit closer to him. He took off his robe and threw it towards the Troll.
Rose started looking back when she realized she ran past her friend.
He transfigured the robe into a heavy metal ball. Banishing it at fast speeds towards the Trolls head. The collision forced the Troll to stop right at Links feet. Unconscious.
Rose turned fully, intending to pull her friend with her, in case he was frozen in fear. She didn't understand what happened at first. Then it hit her. Her eyes widened, her jaw dropped. She stayed that way until Link canceled his spell on the metal ball, turning it into his robe again.
The whole fight took place in only four seconds. He readjusted the rope to tie around the entirety of the troll.
It was then they heard the rushed footsteps of people approaching. The teachers and the Headmaster came into view shortly after. They gasped at the scene before them.
"Mr. Granger! Miss Potter! What is the meaning of this? Why are you not with your peers in your dorms?" Started Professor Mcgonagall, worry clear on her features yet still maintaining her stern persona.
"I'm sorry professor. I left the feast earlier. I was just wandering around, on my way to the dorms. But then I came across this thing. So I ran for a while before Link came" started Rose.
When the adults looked towards Link, he explained.
"I was about to return with my housemates when I sensed Rose running. I assumed that she may be in trouble. So I ran towards her location"
"How did you sense she was running? And how did you know her location?" Asked Dumbledore, interested.
"I don't know" he did know of course. However, as a muggle-born with no knowledge of magic prior to three months, he was not supposed to know yet. Additionally, it was a rare gift, very few would be aware to even research the gift.
"I see" his eyes were twinkling, as though he had figured it out. That made things easier.
"When I arrived here I managed to subdue the Troll, as you can see, before it could do anything to Rose" he continued.
"You expect us to believe such a farce, boy?" Sneered Snape. It wasn't difficult to understand why the Potions professor was skeptical. Not many people could subdue a level 3 magical beast, let alone a young boy just starting his first year.
"I do not expect you to believe anything professor. My prerogative is to state the facts as they happened. I have no control over whether you believe me or not"
That had shut the professor up, though he was slightly ticked that the boy managed to do so, so naturally. It was almost Slytherin in Nature.
"What did you do exactly? How did you subdue the Troll?" Asked the Headmaster.
"I used its club to knock the Troll unconscious. I then transfigured the club into a thick rope, then used them to tie the Troll up" he specifically did not mention his old world's spells. As that would arouse questions he had no way to explain.
The professors were shocked into silence. To think such a simple strategy would work. They were incredibly impressed with the boy's quick thinking and mastery over his spells.
"Very well. 30 points to Gryffindor, Rose you possessed extraordinary courage, by leading a level 3 beast all the way towards a secluded area of Hogwarts, thus reducing the risk towards your fellow students. The school commends you."
Rose beamed, happy she wasn't in trouble. Snape looked as though he swallowed a lemon.
"30 points to Ravenclaw. For quick wit and masterful use of spells. 20 points for subduing the beast. Hogwarts commends you"
"Thank you Headmaster" they both said.
"Now off you go, I'm sure your friends must be quite worried about you whereabouts" he smiled, and was about to turn to the other teachers when Link stepped forward.
"Sir, Rose ran for a long time. She was also chased by a Troll. I believe it prudent to accompany her to the school nurse"
"Ahh yes of course. Do forgive my oversight, Miss Potter. Mr. Granger, would you please accompany her"
"Yes sir"
The two preteens made their way to the infirmary.
"Thank you for saving me" Rose said.
"It's a pleasure"
"But I'm fine. I don't need to go to the nurse"
"I must disagree. You might have a problem you weren't aware of. Also, I suspect that you might be skinnier than what is considered healthy. I wish to suggest you receive some potions for it"
He felt her stiffen at the second part. She had slightly moist eyes. She didn't like to talk about that. But once again Link brought her hope. Hope that she won't stay so little her entire life. Hope that she won't be negatively affected.
"Thank you, Link. For everything"
"Anytime, we are friends. You have to stop thanking me for everything" He finished with a slightly joking tone. She smiled in return.
They just arrived at the infirmary. Madam Pomfrey came towards them asking what the problem was.
"Madam, I wish to request a full checkup on Rose, please. I have reason to believe that she might have some old mishaps"
She was already waving her wand, taking a diagnostic of the patient. Madam Pomfrey is incredibly skilled, one of the best medi-witches in England. It is for that reason she was appointed as Hogwarts healer. For her capability of dealing with most injuries and illnesses. She was able to first ascertain that Rose was without any recent injury, only really tired. And since it was the night, the best thing she could do is go to sleep. Something Rose was all too eager to agree to.
"Thank you, Ma'am, it's deeply appreciated" said Link.
"See I told you, nothing is wrong" pouted Rose, slightly smug.
"Before you leave," interrupted the matron. "I haven't finished. From what I can see, you suffer from slight malnutrition. However, it might affect your growth. So you will have to take this nutrition potion. It should be able to regulate you in a few months. You should take it right before you sleep." She handed Rose the vial. Of course, it was only slight, can't be too obvious for the world to see, plus her magic helped mitigate the worst of the neglect.
"Thank you Ma'am" she replied, still pouting, this interruption made her previous comment seem like a joke. She could feel Link's complacent smile.
They left the infirmary. Link was accompanying her towards her dorm.
"You can say it"
"Say what?"
"You know what"
"I have no idea what you are talking about rose"
"AAHH… Say I told you so already. Get it over with"
"Hmmm… maybe later"
"Humph"
She really hated him sometimes. He knew how to push her buttons.
"Can I see the potion?"
"Sure"
He took the potion and started examining it. It was of good quality. But he could make it better. He could make it so that the effects take place within the week, rather than the months the school nurse spoke of. The question is, should he? He looked towards the girl he became so fond of, in such a short amount of time. It was weird, he was never that open with people before, but she somehow made her way to be one of the most important people in this new life. Right after his parents. He already knew he would.
"Follow me"
Confused, she did. Until they entered an empty classroom, nothing but a cauldron in the middle of the room.
"What is this room?"
"This is where I come to study potions and spells. You can come too if you want"
"Not more studying. Maybe in the future. Before exams" she whined, looking with puppy eyes at the end.
"Sure" he chuckled.
"Why are we here?"
"I want to see if I can make the potion better"
"How?"
"Make it so effects take place within a week. The effects would be more efficient too. And don't worry, if I mess up I will go ask for a vial myself. I would say I broke it."
"Okay"
She watched him work. It was like art. As though he were a maestro in an orchestra and the ingredients were his musicians. They dared not do anything but exactly what he wished for them to do. Watching him she was reminded of a sentence uttered by Snape. 'Potions is a precise art and subtle science' she finally understood what he meant. Link was amazing.
Half an hour later, he turned off the fire, the fumes wafting within the room. Smelling of herbs. It was refreshing. He pulled a pill out of the cauldron. Noticing the questioning look of the girl he said.
"I made it so it's very concentrated. That way you won't have to taste it. Take it before you sleep"
"But how?"
"Secret" he said winking. She huffed, pouting.
He can't exactly say it was alchemy either, they don't teach it here. They left and made it to the Gryffindor common room.
"I'll see you tomorrow" He smiled and left.
Once inside the common room, Rose was greeted to the sight of Ron playing chess with Seamus. There were others doing their own things, but she didn't know them.
"Rose, where were you?" he asked.
"The infirmary"
"Why?" Seamus looked up at that interested in the reason, with slight worry. Ron was still concentrating on the game. It was his turn.
"I was chased by the troll, but Link saved me"
"Why were you with him?" he asked, completely ignoring the troll part.
"I wasn't, he came to help me."
"Oh, ok. Well, at least you're good" with that he returned to the game. Seamus smiled at her and offered his good wishes before returning to the game.
She went to her shared room and sat on her bed. It's odd. A house was meant to be like a family, but somehow, she felt much more at ease and closer with Link than anyone in the house.
She changed into her PJs, took out the pill Link made. She put it into her mouth, about to reach for water to wash it down. Before she could though, the strangest thing happened. As soon as the pill entered her mouth it dissolved, it turned into a sort of energy that immediately permeated her entire being. It was so soothing, so comfortable that she started closing her eyes. Just before sleep took her, she remembered Link saying this was a Panacea.
It was the most comfortable sleep she had in a very long time.
A/N: I hope everyone enjoys this chapter. I tried to make it different to the best of my abilities. Please tell me how the Troll fight went. Hopefully, I did it justice.
Next chapter is meeting Hagrid, Norberta, and Christmas.
Thank you
