Satine. Even as I think her name, I feel my lips curling into a sneer. Satine: the thorn in my side, the fly in my ointment, the pain in my - well, you know where I'm heading.
Ooh, it's infuriating! We arrived at the Moulin Rouge around the same time (I think I was there before she, but she argues the opposite), and I know I have what it takes to become the most beautiful courtesan in the world. I know it! And I was about to, too, until that slut Satine came along and snatched it all away from me. Oh, how Harold loved her, far more than he ever loved me. Her red hair, her pale skin - gag me, already. Apparently brown hair and a nice body don't get you anywhere these days.
And what about Christian? Well, I'm certainly not envious of her for that. Who wants an innocent little poet-boy for their bed? Certainly not me! I thought he was cute enough when I first laid eyes on him, but with all their carrying on and sappy, lovesick expressions towards one and other, they deserve each other.
Oh yeah! The Duke! Just another man that thinks Satine is the world and I'm just another can-can-dancing whore. I know a few things about Satine's little duke that would appall both her and Harold Zidler, but they never listen to me anyway, so I'm not going to waste my breath. Let them discover for themselves the psychotic rat-man that he is. Although, I do have to admit, the temptation to spill the beans to the Duke about Satine and Christian's little fling is great. I wonder what he'd do, who he'd go to first. I can just see him wrapping his long, cold fingers around Satine's neck and squeezing - no one would be raving about her ivory skin then, after it lost all its warmth, now would they?
Oh, what you must think of me. You must think I'm a cruel, conniving, jealous woman, and maybe you're right. But you try living a life in which everything you want is stolen from you, is just out of your reach, and you see what kind of person you turn into. Satine embodies everything that I've ever wanted that I couldn't have: fame, power, a beauty that can turn the head of every man in the room. My jealousy is my cocoon - I wrap it tightly around me, and it keeps me warm, feeds me fury to live upon. I wear my jealousy like a jewel - like a green diamond. Yes, that's it. My jealousy sparkles like green diamonds. At least there's one thing Satine cannot steal from me.
