It wasn't supposed to end like this.

He was supposed to save his princess. He would be the knight in shining armor, riding in on his noble steed and whisking her away to his castle in the sky. Then they would live happily ever after, until the end of time. That's the way his childhood books ended. But, sadly, he had come to realize that books were fiction, and real life was not.

It had happened so quickly, it had seemed unreal. A stray nightmare that had crossed his subconscious. Oh how he wished it was so. But when we opened his eyes, it still remained. When she had been covered up, he blinked again.

"No!!!" he cried, running to her side. His head placed on her chest, his eyes staring at her already pale face. His raw, emotional screams tore through him like a chainsaw. His sobs, racking his body until he hurt.

"Help her, please! She's not dead! We can still save her!" His pleas broke the hearts of everyone around, the uncontained hope and denial in his voice stabbed through them. The doctor finally arrived, trying to sedate the heartbroken man. "Let me go! Help her, please! LET ME GO!!" He struggled out of their hands, always trying to make it back to her. He kicked and flung his arms in all directions while his friends tried to grab him. They finally got him down on the floor and the doctor approached with a hypspray.

He stopped moved and lay limp on the floor. "Please." he begged. "Help her."

Those were the last words he spoke before passing into oblivion.

It wasn't supposed to end like this.

His fairy tale dream had died with his princess.

The books never ended like this.

But, he supposed, they never did.
