Redwall Poem - of Martin the Warrior & Felldoh
Based on the novel Martin the Warrior from the "good" side.
By Sarah Leung
A bold young mouse called Martin
Was the first to defy him,
The evil creature Badrang,
Tyrant stoat of all Marshank.
He was tied, for the whole night,
To a pole 'till morning light
Bringing great birds of the sea
While the slaves watched from the quarry.
Little did they know of Rose,
A mousemaid, and Grumm a mole.
She made the great eagle's cry
Which rang high into the sky.
They and the slaves struck the vermin
With hard stones to help save Martin.
Brought to Badrang, whose paw he bit,
He was sentenced to the pit.
The pit held Brome and Felldoh,
A mouse and fellow slave squirrel.
But Grumm, being a strong mole,
Tunneled there and dig a hole.
The three climbed out and were free
And from Marshank they did flee.
In a longboat, they set sail
Onwards to Brome's home Noonvale.
But they did not manage to stay
Together all of the way.
Martin was with Grumm and Rose
And Brome was landed with Felldoh.
The groups went their sep'rate ways
Kept apart for many days.
Felldoh and Brome, not much later,
Met the Rambling Rosehip Players.
Meanwhile, mouse, mousemaid, and mole
Met up with a lot of trouble
From lizards to pigmy shrews,
Mirdop and Gawtrybe squirrels too.
Felldoh and the newly made friends
Went back to Marshank once again.
They put on a fake trick play
And took some of the slaves away.
Along with some friends they met
Martin, Rose, and Grumm all set
Back to Marshank to defeat
The stoat that no beast yet could beat.
Felldoh mocked him, armed with javelins,
'Till Badrang came out from within.
Felldoh beat him until he cried
And took down scores before he died.
Martin came back for the warlord
To retrieve his father's sword
That Badrang took in the capture
Of Martin and his grandmother.
There was a real mighty war
On the castle's sandy shore.
The good joining with the good
As evil beasts never would.
Martin, in time, fought sep'rately,
With loyal friends, in the quarry
Against Badrang, to settle
Things in which others could not meddle.
Rose struck the stoat, but was struck down,
Head snapping as she hit the ground.
Martin fought Badrang in a fury
'Till the stoat was at his mercy.
Mouse killed stoat with a thrust in the heart
And lay down by Rose, his life now dark.
The honest beasts had won at last,
The evils of the time now past.
No longer in the land was there strife.
Martin had changed, he led a new life.
Free, bringing his sister Rose, Brome
Set back, where she could lay at rest, at home (sweet home).
