Petra had just returned come home from the Formic War and her treatment had made her a near celebrity worldwide. The fame was not what she wanted; nor did she wish to end up feeling like an outcast within her own family. She had mised out on so much and so many years with her family. She'd catch up on the school she lost quickly, even though she probably could've gone straight to college. Petra felt as if she lost everything she could have for her future somewhere in Battle School and now it was gone; floating somewhere in space.
Today was the first day in school for Petra. She felt miserable and didn't think school could help at all. All school would do was make her sit there listening to slang she didn't understand (although she would quickly catch on) and let her learn the work and within a couple of days surpass all the other students. She was going to a public school, she was possibly the smartest girl her age in the world; she was considered a military genius. Did they expect her to just stay in public school at an average level? It didn't really matter did to Petra. If they thought that, they'd be proved wrong soon. It's not like she had anything better to do.
As soon as Petra got to school everyone flocked around the war hero. She knew most of them would turn out fake; all they wanted was the popularity of being with the hero of the formic war. But they didn't know Petra was no hero; how could a hero fall asleep leading her troops in battle? How could a hero let her own men die just because she was tired? She was no hero, of course only the people at the battle knew that.
Soon the bell rang and all the students went to their classes. Petra had peers pulling at her arms saying, "Your in my class Petra. I'll show you where it is," or "Sit at my lunch table Petra. We'll be great friends." Petra arrived at math class and took a seat. The teacher began talking and putting problems on the board while students whispered rumors, gossiped, and passed notes around the room. Petra watched the students and realized that she not only lost touch of what Earth was, how society worked, and a strong loving connection to her family in space; she had also lost her chance to be a child. A small drop of a tear washed up on the side of her left eye, but she wiped
