Prologue

With a quiet swishing sound, the doors to the Mess Hall slid open. Lieutenant Tom Paris looked up from his plate to see Ensign Harry Kim approaching the replicator. "Apple Pie, chilled," said the young Ensign. The computer chimed in response, and sparkling blue lights danced around the replicator until a small slice of apple pie stood on a plate before Harry. He picked it up, and sat down at Tom's table. Ensign Kim quickly began shovling forkfulls of applie pie into his mouth.

"You know, it might taste better if you chew before you swallow," said Tom.

"Hmm?" Harry looked up at Tom, his mouth full of pie.

"I'm going to the Holodeck after dinner," began Tom. "Do you want to come? We can play a few hockey games against the Vancouver Canucks." He stared at Harry, awaiting a response.

Ensign Kim struggled to swallow the huge amount of pie in his mouth, then replied "What the heck is a Canuck? Or a Vancouver, for that matter?" He blinked, and Lieutenant Paris laughed at him.

"The Vancouver Canucks were a hockey team in the twenty-first century. They played hockey against other teams to earn the Stanley Cup." Harry already looked confused.

"Why didn't they just replicate a Stanley Cup?" asked the naive Ensign.

"Because, Har, it's just not the same thing as--"

The entire ship shook violently, as the main lights dimmed and the alert lights began flashing red.

"Red alert! All hands, battlestations!" The Captain's voice echoed throughout the room. Crewmen and officers began rushing out the doors of the Mess Hall, as Harry and Tom stood up. They made their way through the doors, and headed down the corridor.

The starship shook again, and the main lights began to flicker around them.

"What's happening?" asked Harry. Tom could sense the worried tone in his voice.

"Everything's fine, Harry. Let's just get to the Bridge." The ship shook again, and a console blew to the left of Harry's head. He was knocked off his feet by the explosion, and lay unconscious on the floor of the corridor. Lieutenant Paris grabbed his friend by the arms, and began dragging him toward the nearby Turbolift. Another explosion, nearby. Tom ducked down, and covered Harry.

The computer's voice was heard throughout the corridor. "Warning: Hull breach on Deck Two."

Tom looked up, and saw only the emptiness of space. The flickering forcefield was all that kept him and his friend, Harry, from being sucked helplessly into the vacuum of space.
