The Promise

Catherine Willows sat on the carpeted floor right next to the bed that held the sleeping form of her daughter Lyndsey. The room was dark except for the glow of the moon that crept in through the curtains, bathing her babies face in beautiful light. Lyndsey shifted slightly and sighed before relaxing once more. Very carefully Catherine reached out to smooth some of her long golden hair away from her peaceful face and as she did that felt something clench deep inside her. Powerless to stop it she bowed her head as tears flowed down her cheeks.

She felt so blessed to know that Lyndsey was happy and protected and safe from the harsh realities of the world.

A world that allowed last minute baby-sitters to sexually assault and rape innocent nine year old boys. A world that forced those boys to keep that terrible truth a secret from the people who loved them and could have helped them. A world that made one of those boys tell her that this had helped him to become the man he was today. God, how she hated this world.

She would forever see the naked emotions on the face of her co-worker and friend Nick Stokes. Grief had been there, and fear, and shame. The tears threatening to overflow from those brown eyes had nearly undone her when he told her about what had been done to him in one of the halls of the CSI building. His words echoed in her mind even now.

"I was nine. And she was a last-minute babysitter. All I can remember doing afterwards is sitting in my room, in the dark, staring at the door, waiting for my . for my mom to come."

She had wanted to hug him then and there, to tell him that everything would be alright, but she had held back. Nothing she said could have done anything to help him. And so she told him that she was sorry. Empty words. Nick had nodded and had turned away from her after telling her that he had never told anyone before and that he was sorry, his voice braking on the last words. He was sorry, but for what? For making her a part of his world that had become bitter and twisted since that night when he was nine? Or sorry for his behavior on the case?

Looking again at the beautiful face of the small girl in the bed before her Catherine made her girl a promise. She would make sure nothing would ever happen to Lyndsey that would turn her world upside down or she would try dying.

And she would offer Nick Stokes her understanding and her help. She had no reason to believe that he would accept either, but she had to try and do something to mend what had been done to him.

Wiping away her tears Catherine crawled to Lyndsey's bedside and she softly kissed her on the cheek before getting to her feet and leaving the room.
