The Burden of the Ring

By Sarah Leung

I left my home to go adventuring,

To go on a quest for which I did not care,

To carry firth and destroy the One Ring,

A heavy burden for me alone to bear.

Leaving my cozy hobbit-hole behind,

To faced the unknown, worse than any nightmare,

Fighting off orcs and evils of all kind.

A heavy burden for me alone to bear.

With the ring on, I'd be invisible,

But at Sauron's watchful eye, I'd have to stare.

I wish it would make me invincible.

A heavy burden for me alone to bear.

The power of the ring would make me weak,

Making my heart lifelessly cold with despair.

I knew I was the one he did seek,

A heavy burden for me alone to bear.

Why not a man, a wizard, or an elf?

As a half-ling, I couldn't even compare.

Of all people, it had to be myself,

A heavy burden for me alone to bear.

Chased by Sauron's creatures and black riders,

I avoided them, but was caught in a snare

At the end, by Gollum and a spider.

A heavy burden for me alone to bear.

And I was down before I could know it,

But my friend Sam escaped from the spider's lair,

Destroying the ring, thrown in the fire pit,

Oh, a burden no longer for me to bear!
