Why?

She turned the key in the lock and slowly stepped inside, her mind elsewhere. A foreboding had been on her heart throughout the day, distracting her from attending to important matters of the ESUN.

This was too much. The only one who could ever grasp her thoughts like this was-it hit her. He'd always said life came cheap, especially his. But he'd found love, hadn't he? He wouldn't as long as he had someone to live for, would he?

Her heart races as she snatched the key out of the lock and dashed out to her car, almost forgetting to open the door in her rush. It seemed to take hours as the car stubbornly started; the stoplights were almost unbearably long, her pleas rising to heaven throughout the entire ride. What if she wasn't there in time? It would haunt her heart until the day she died. An eternity of fear and she sped up his doorstep.

There was no point in leaving a letter; no one would bother to read it anyways. His hand reached into the drawer, as though being moved by some higher power. No tears stained his face, and they would stain no other, not over his loss. Well. maybe. but no, what would he have to offer them? They had everything they wanted; there was nothing he could do to change their heart.

There was only one who could save him now, but that one did not care. His entire life was unrequited love. Slowly, steadily, the barrel came to rest on his temple.

Fear drove her on. Not bothering to knock, she opened the unlocked door and found herself face to face with her greatest nightmare.

"Heero. Please, I beg you, do not do this." her voice choked as tears started to fall gently down the slopes of her ghost-white cheeks.

Before he could follow through with what would end it all, her beautiful form graced his eyes. "Heero. Please. I beg you, do not do this." Was she crying? No, it wasn't possible. Why would she ever cry over him? He didn't deserve her. His eyes must have been tormenting him. They were giving him taste of the punishment he knew would come when he did this.

"Why shouldn't I? There is no point in this life. I thought I'd finally known love, but it was a lie." Hatred and pain seemed to flow through his eyes, for what seemed the first time.

"So he didn't love you."

The tight grip on the device of death was loosened. "He? What are you talking about?"

She blinked, surprised, "I thought.you and Duo."

To her disbelief, he emitted a small laugh, "So best friends are always lovers now. strange how the times have changed. The one I speak of is the most important girl in my life, and many others." The gun found its way away from his head and back in the drawer. A small light seemed to flicker in his eyes, a light of minuscule hope.

Something leapt in her heart, but was quickly shot down. Why would he love her? She was the pacifist, always against what he did, and she knew she was generally annoying, too needy for anyone like him to have time for her. She furrowed her eyebrows, "So you've found someone? I'm happy for you."

His hand left the gun completely and closed the drawer. "Are you really so dense? I love you, Relena. It took me awhile to realize it, but I love you, and I always will. But I know you do not love me, why on earth would you?"

Her eyes widened and she swayed in her stance, only to be steadied by his hand. "Promise me now that you are not lying."

His arms wrapped around her small waist and pulled her close. Gently, perfectly, his lips pressed against her own. Nothing was wrong anymore. Too quickly, it ended. His eyes gazed in hers, "I swear that I would not lie to you. I swore to protect you for a reason. I do love you."

She barely whispered, "You are loved," before she was swept into heaven once more.
