Chirstian boarded the express to Bourges a couple days later. He took what savings he had and bought a ticket. He sat down on a hard bench-seat. He gripped Satines letter in one hand, making it turn white with the pressure. In his other hand was a small cloth bag with a few of his belongings. One included the corset of Satines. He couldnt bear himself to part with it.
A man walked down the aisles collecting tickets. He approached Christians row, and Christian started looking for his ticket. He put Satines ltter in between his teeth so he would have an extra arm to search. He went through his first pocket. It wasnt there. The letter in his mouth vaugely smelled of Satine. He found the ticket and gave it too the man as he moved to the next aisle. Christian took the letter and held it again. He gave it a small sniff. He pondered a bit. It smelled of "The Temptress", Satines perfume. She always put it on right before she left Christian's. He put the letter to his head, as if it would ease the pain. A tear rolled down his cheek. Followed be another. He started shaking and sobbing loudly. Several people looked at him with pity, as if they sypithized with him. 'They dont know!' he thought angrily. 'They will never know how it feels!!'
Suddenly a young woman came and sat next to him. She offered him a sleek white hankerchief. Christian was hesitant to take it, but finally he reached for it. He placed his letter on top of his bag at his side. He wiped his eyes and handed it back to her. "Lilacs.' he thought suddenly. 'It smelled like lilacs.' he sighed. 'Lilacs are good, it will keep my mind off.......'
She turned to him. "Hello." she said in a featherlike soft voice. " My name is Bianca."
