Delayed Affinity

The room is a gleaming, spotless white. The faint scent of floral decorations and stronger hints of medical alcohol and lemon fresh Lysol linger in the air.

Hospitals were not always bad. Sometimes they meant a new life was being created, or a pained elder whose spirit was truly fulfilled was moving to the next life.

But hospitals never seemed to bring serenity to her, she thinks as she sits quietly by the occupied bed, starched white sheets lying carefully over the sleeping patient.

A heart monitor beeps softly yet disturbingly above him, and she watches it with a nervous anxiousness, tears glinting in the corners of her eyes and threatening to fall.

She takes a deep, shaky breath and in an almost inaudible tone, speaks, "Vaughn… I don't know what happened to you. I really don't. It had to be something in that water, but you were fine until now…. You're alive though, and that's all I care about," she raises her voice ever so slightly. "You're going to stay that way, too. You thought you were going to take the easy way out? Think again, because there's no way you're leaving me now."

She shoots another nervous glance at the peaking green line and continues. "I'm not sure if you can hear me. But I'm going to talk to you anyway. God, I sound so cliché. I know that sounds like a soap opera…. But I meant it. I'm going to talk. And you can listen….

"On the topic of T.V., I realized that I don't even know what shows you watch. I don't know your favorite movie or favorite book, or what kind of music you listen to… there's so much I don't know about you.

"But I promise you, Vaughn, you'll get better from this… you'll get through it. And then, when this whole mess is over, I'm going to find all that out. I swear to you."

Gently, she takes his limp hand in her own.

A tear falls and stains the stiff sheet as she realizes how weak he is. His hand is barely able to remain in hers. She takes it a little more tightly, careful not to hurt him.

Suddenly, the steady beeping sped and all at once, dropped to a single toned, high pitched sound.

"BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP…"

She stares in horror at the monitor, the line now moving flat against the grid. On first impulse, she holds on to his hand more tightly and whispers, "Vaughn… oh, God, no. You can't do this… please… I'll get help. Just hang in there. Oh, God…"

She places his hand carefully back by his side and hurries out of the room.

She can't stand to watch the procedure the doctors perform on him, so she gives his hand a final squeeze before leaving again.

On her way through the lonely hallways, she hears footsteps echoing through the eerie quiet. She recognizes the blonde woman coming towards her. She is memorable only by a faint flicker, a photograph etched in her mind.

The women brush past each other and the blonde turns back around to face her.

"Do you work here? I'm looking for someone… my name's Alice Walker. I'm Michael Vaughn's girlfriend."

"No, I don't work here. I'm sorry," she answers, maybe too quickly.

Girlfriend? The word shocks her, but right then she can only think of his life being almost drained away, and she cares about nothing else.

If he lived, and she knows he will, everything would be alright. She has confidence in this, as she does in him. He would be okay. He would get through this. Then everything would be back to what she has come to know as normal.

The affinity will have to wait.
