Chap. 1
AUGUSTINE SPICULES
Augustine Spicules was probably the strangest thirteen years old girl I'd ever met. In more than one way. Augustine (born in January by the way, not August) told everyone at her boarding school in Germany that her parents were called Rebecca and John. Unfortunately they had died in a train crash and she didn't like talking about it. This was untrue. Her parents were alive and well and most certainly not called Rebecca and john. Augustine's parents were hippies. They had never been on a train (they didn't believe in that sort of transport.) Her mother was called moonbeam her father was Sunshadow. She was deeply ashamed of them. The way they went around the place wearing silly robes and waving wooden sticks. How pathetic. What was weirder about Augustine was her phobia. It was an irrational and unexplainable fear of anything unusual and mystical. She freaks at the word 'magic' and screams at any mention of it. Augustine's story begins very early on a misty day (05:58 to be precise) on Thursday 31st July. ***
"Tap! Tap! Tap!" Augustine's eyes snapped open at the noise. In a clipped voice she said "Wer ist da?" in a flawless German voice. The tapping continued. "Who's there?" she repeated, in English. The noise was coming from the window. Augustine looked at her digital clock. Now, those who know Augustine will know that she always wakes up at six am exactly every day. "Zwei vor sechs" she muttered under her breath. She had been woken two minutes too early thanks to that noise. Boy was she not a happy bunny! She grudgingly got out of bed and walked to the window to see who (or what) was tapping on it. A large owl was holding a yellow parchment letter and tapping furiously on the window with its giant talons. Augustine cautiously opened it - she didn't trust animals (especially ones that woke her up early.) The owl flew through, dropped the letter on.Augustine's bed and flew straight out. Augustine stared at the letter open-mouthed, with a delicious look of fury and fear on her pale face. *
Augustine gingerly picked up the letter. Written on the front (in emerald green ink) was the address of Regalma(ig Academy (Augustine's school.) She apprehensively read it. The colour drained completely from her face. Augustine's hands were shaking uncontrollably and she kept muttering German swear words. Augustine had received a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It said that she should have started when she was eleven but they couldn't pick up her magical talent till now (it also said something like they were sure this was as she had been hiding her talent but Augustine conveniently forgot to read that part.) She was to start in September and would be in her third year. Augustine's worst nightmare had come true. Her deepest, darkest secret had been revealed. She was a witch!
