Don't Cry

*** I don't own the Matrix, characters, the Neb or anything. It all belongs to the gods that are the Wachowskis and Warner Brothers. ***

Summery: A brief look into the mind of one of the characters of the Matrix.

Don't cry…

Morpheus believes he has found the One. The One… I hope to god Morpheus is right this time. Then, the war will be over and we can all go home and live safely with our families. Trinity crying. Although she has no one on Zion waiting for her, she is eagerly anticipating, hoping one day to see the great city itself. She cries at these words. Tears of joy, I can see.

Don't cry, Trinity. There are better ways to express happiness.

Neo is with us now. He is so confused, so afraid, so helpless. At night I hear him cry, alone in his room, desperately wanting his old life back.

Don't cry, Neo. Soon you will understand.

Cypher is going mad. He has to get out of here. At first he was just like the rest of us – willing to risk his life for the cause of destroying the Matrix. Now he wants nothing more than to be back in the Matrix, with no horrible memories of the Real World.

Don't cry, Cypher. Even though I know you won't let yourself.

Mouse sits at the computer screens, watching the Lady in Red walk by, winking seductively. He is the youngest. He is lonely. He wants someone his own age to relate too – he is too young to be put through a life like this.

Don't cry, Mouse. When this is all over, we will all go to Zion. You won't be lonely anymore.

Switch, lurking in the shadows, her eyes carefully following Apoc as he walks towards his room. She is jealous, jealous of what she cannot have. Apoc. He doesn't even give her more than a passing glance, yet she is in love with him. Madly in love.

Don't cry, Switch. Just because Apoc is not for you doesn't mean you will never find anyone.

Wait…

Wait for Zion.

Zion…

We are all waiting, waiting for Zion. Waiting for the One. Waiting for the end of the machines and our freedom. Humans are nothing but slaves in this world, not even knowing the slightest part of the truth.

Again, Trinity is crying. This time it is because of death. Deaths all around. And she fears for her life as well as Neo's. She tries not so cry in this single moment of madness, but her efforts are failing.

Don't cry, Trinity. I don't think I can bear it.

Morpheus…they have him. It's all because of Cypher. God damn Cypher. They are trying to force the codes to Zion's mainframe out of his mind. He knows he can't hold on much longer.

Don't cry, Morpheus. Neo and Trinity are coming for you. Hold on.

And I? What have I gained from all this? I don't even think I have gained anything. Nothing but the losses.

I have gained losses.

I have gained a whole in my heart.

I have gained more grief than I could ever imagine.

I don't know how much more I can gain. I'm all alone, the last of my kind on this small wreck. I wouldn't even call it a ship anymore.

Everyone here thinks things about me. They see me only as the operator. Always cheerful. Always smiling. But this mask can not hold up much longer. It's breaking; eventually, it will be gone, and I will be left helpless, alone, in the world where I have nothing more to live for.

I wish I had someone to tell me not to cry…
