"Our family…"
"I… can bring them back…"
"This is the power of the hope that my brothers gave me!"
"It's my battle phase again!"
"Go… God-Eyes Phantom Dragon!"
"But it isn't all over yet."
"Reiji. You—"
"What do you say to an action duel?"
"C'mon out Poppo!"
"Who needs an action card anyway?!"
"Shining wings! Deliver divine speed and illuminate heaven and earth!"
"Fight poison with poison! These monsters are dangerous when mixed!"
"The pall of darkness is slashed apart by fangs of rebellion that have gained new power!"
"What? You can stop this too?!"
"Your attack is negated!"
"Human cannonball!"
"This is our fight, Reiji! Yours and mine! Gods just get in the way."
"I activate a continuous trap! Pendulum Match!"
"My entertainment duel is just starting!"
"I'll knock down these dominoes with the power of my spirit!"
"We both take effect damage!"
"Whoa! It actually is my ace card! But I can't play it..."
"Take 100 damage!"
"We don't need a card like that."
"That's— it's the gate Adam saw!"
"We don't belong in this world. We can't stay here."
"We'll find G.O.D.'s makers and teach them a lesson!"
"I'm here, help… Yugo… Yuri… Yuto!"
Grey eyes opened abruptly to an unknown ceiling in a dark room. Turning his head, the boy in the bed could not see very well because of the darkness in the room. He tried to get up but a slight pressure in his head make him stop. Taking his head in his hand he felt a little bit of pain. The boy waited for it to go away to straighten up in his bed and after letting his eyes adjust to the darkness, he took out his surroundings. He was in a small room with the bed in a corner; a big window with the curtains closed and a desk and chair under it; in the other wall, there was a bookshelf and a door and finally, beside the bed, there was a small bureau and a door which probably let outside the room considering the boy could see light under the door. Over the bed, the boy saw some posters related to duel monsters and a band which he didn't know.
Getting out of the bed, the boy went to open the door beside the bookshelf, discovering it to be a closet so the bathroom must be in a different room. Behind the door, the boy saw a full-body mirror and the image reflected surprised him.
What the hell? The boy couldn't stop himself from thinking because the reflection in the mirror was a younger version of himself, probably 12 or 13 years old. It was really strange because the last time he was alive, he had been 18 years old and when he was a spirit attached to his younger brother, he had taken the appearance of himself when he was the same age as said younger brother.
Am I alive again? He thought, watching his black and purple hair, grey eyes and his body clad in dark blue pajamas. Closing the closet door, the boy went to the desk where he could now see a duel disk. It was a completely different design from the one he used to have before the incident in his world. He couldn't access any data because it was password protected, but he took a look at the deck.
Okay, he thought as he looked through the cards, it must really be me or the me of this place, since I still don't know where I am and the deck is missing some of my usual cards. The cards were from the Phantom Knights archetype, heavy in spell and trap cards with a lot of monsters being the same levels, as was normal when you do XYZ summoning.
I don't seem to have pendulum cards, but maybe those are in the side deck. The boy could sometimes remove the pendulum cards because it was not always necessary to bring out his ace monster to win a match. Satisfied, he went to check out the extra deck. The boy was surprised on seeing Dark Requiem XYZ Dragon as that monster required rank-up magic, all the other monsters were XYZ monsters as well. The last one was his ace monster, Dark Anthelion Dragon.
Why do I have it? He thought, I remember I left it with Yuya and that dream, is it possible that—?
Suddenly, the boy heard voices getting louder outside the room.
"We need to check if he's fine, brother," said a female voice.
"Wait, Ruri! Don't just go in like that!" said a male voice.
The door to his room suddenly opened and the lights were turned on.
The boy didn't know who to be the most surprised to see at his door entrance; Kurosaki Shun or a girl with the same face as his mother, Yuzu.
"Yuto! You're awake," said the Yuzu-look-alike with a relieved face, "how are you feeling? You shouldn't be up from your bed yet."
"Ruri, let him breathe," said Kurosaki, "and you shouldn't just enter a room like that, you don't know what the people inside will be doing." Turning to look at him, he asked "Yuto, are you okay?"
Yuto didn't know how to respond to that. Kurosaki looked a little younger to how he remembered him in Maiami City and the Yuzu-look-alike, which apparently was named Ruri, was a whole new bizarre experience; maybe this was how people reacted when they saw him with his brothers, as they all had similar faces. Maybe Kurosaki was the most out of character because he was worried about him when they never properly met. This made Yuto think that he was in a whole new timeline or, considering Kurosaki has a little sister, maybe even a different universe.
"Yuto, are you okay?" Ruri asked again.
"I— I'm fine" said Yuto a little slowly.
Ruri looked at the cards in Yuto's hands.
"Seriously, you had an accident yesterday and the first thing you do when you wake up is check your deck," Ruri said with a little smile on her face and exasperation in her voice.
"It's obvious, Ruri," said Kurosaki, "one of the most important things for a duelist is their deck."
"Accident… I was in an accident?" asked Yuto.
"You don't remember?" said the other guy surprised.
Honestly, the last memory Yuto had was of dying along with his brothers to protect his youngest brother, Yuya. This was the perfect opportunity to get information, Yuto negated with his head and went to sit on his bed.
"Maybe we should take him to the doctor," said the girl with a worried face.
"I'm okay, it's just that my memories are a little mixed up," Yuto went to reassure her quickly. He needed to get information and going to the doctor would warrant a lot of questions.
"What's the last thing you remember?" asked Kurosaki.
Taking into account his hurting head and the fact he was a duelist in this world, Yuto went with a possible scenario.
"Not much about yesterday but I— I hit my head while playing in a duel?" he said carefully while touching his head as if trying to obtain a faraway memory.
"That's correct," said Ruri, "we were all… and with all I mean Allen, Sayaka, Kaito—" No idea who those are," —my brother, you and I, in the Main Plaza close to Heartland Tower—" What the hell?! Why was he in Heartland City? "—and you were in a duel against my brother, but you guys took it a little too far and the last attack pushed you all the way to a wall."
"Sorry man," said Kurosaki, "I got a little excited."
Okay, I am in Heartland City, thought Yuto, I need to find out who all the people Ruri said are and Kurosaki and Ruri are definitively brother and sister, I never considered Kurosaki as the brotherly type. Now Yuto had a little more information to work with, but still a lot of questions, and asking these two could make them notice he didn't remember that much, for not saying he didn't remember anything about his life with them. He needed to make them leave so he could investigate.
"Maybe if I rest a little, I'll remember," Yuto said.
"That's a good idea," said Kurosaki, "c'mon Ruri, let's go and let him rest."
"Are you sure you will be okay?" asked Ruri.
"Don't worry… Ruri, I'll be fine," hoping to not have made a mistake by calling her by her first name; his worries were for nothing because Ruri didn't say anything about it.
"Fine, either way you do need to rest, we have classes tomorrow," she said. "Call if you need anything, okay?"
Kurosaki and Ruri were about to leave when suddenly Yuto remembered something.
"Guys!"
Both stopped to look at him.
"Do any of you know the password for my duel disk?" he asked a little embarrassed of himself.
"You don't remember?" asked Kurosaki.
"I wouldn't be asking if I knew." Ruri laughed at that.
"It's DRXYZD," said Kurosaki, "in honor of Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon, seriously, you really love that monster, I'm surprised you forgot."
"Thanks, Kurosaki," said Yuto without thinking.
"What?" said Kurosaki, and both he and Ruri had questioning looks on their faces.
Damn, I messed up, thought Yuto.
"Sorry… Shun, I do need to rest." Yuto let out a little laugh trying to dismiss his mistake, and with skeptics faces both took their leave, closing the door behind them.
I'll need to be very careful of what I say from now on, to not rise suspicion.
Yuto raised from his bed and went to the bookshelf first to look at the photos. There was one with just him, Ruri and Kurosaki—Shun, I need to think of him as Shun now—in front of Heartland Duel School and considering the logo in their uniforms, they must study in the Clover Branch. He had heard about Heartland Duel School back in his world. Students were divided in four branches but all of them specialize in XYZ summon, the school even had some top graduates who had made it as pro duelists.
He and his brothers went to his grandfather's duel school in Maiami City as it had courses for all summoning methods. They also did a lot of dueling between them and so the four could go head on against any type of summoning method; it also meant they know each other's decks really well.
Another picture showed him with a group of friends. He recognized Shun and Ruri meaning the others must be the friends Ruri talked about. Sayaka, Kaito and Alan…? Better get more information before speaking to them, thought Yuto. There was a picture of just him and Ruri in what seemed to be a date, which was weird for him when seeing how much she resembled Yuzu. And the last photo showed a beautiful picture of Heartland City and Yuto became sad thinking he never got the chance to visit that city in his world.
Well, I don't get along with my family or I don't have any here. He wasn't the most sentimental member of his family, that was more like Yuya or Yugo, but even he had a photo of his family back in his old room in Maiami City.
Next in his inspection came the duel disk to which he was going to change the password. Yuto started reading news to know what type of world he was living in and maybe find something about his family. They were well known in the media because his father was a pro duelist, the pioneer of dueltainment and co creator of solid vision with mass, and his younger brother Yugo was a rising star in riding duels. He found something related to his friend Kaito (the one from this universe), who was a pro duelist, however, nothing about his family. The strangest thing was that in this world the only summoning method they used was XYZ summoning.
What is going on here? He personally only used XYZ and pendulum summoning, but a world with only XYZ was strange. There were no riding duels and the most common cards for fusion (Polymerization) and synchro summoning (Tuners) didn't exist either.
Reviewing all his conversations and emails, Yuto found a little more about his friends and that the only family member he had was a long-distance aunt who paid for his education in Heartland Duel School until he turned 18.
Is it possible that everything I know was a dream? Thought Yuto. That I don't have brothers and I really lost my memories of this life?
Yuto didn't want to believe it but all the evidence was pointing to that reality… until he remembered something important. Going for his deck, he took out his ace monster.
Dark Anthelion Dragon DARK – Rank 7/PS 10 – DRAGON/XYZ/PENDULUM/EFFECT – ATK 3000/DEF 2500
"This card proves that everything was real," said Yuto out loud to himself. The memories he had of his family could never be fake, he knew it deep inside himself and that dream before he woke up must mean something.
"I'm going to find you all," he said with determination.
