Dealt a New Hand

Summary: Duel Monsters. A children's card game that kids and adults alike can enjoy, even if the anime premise is silly. My problem? I just got Isekai'd into Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V, and I'm going to have to get involved in a dimensional war. "Well, might as well make every deck that was too expensive to be made in my original world!" Gamer!OC Fanfiction

I: The Fun Begins!

Congratulations, you died!

I stared at the screen in front of me, trying to pinch myself awake to no avail. I could feel the pain, it was very real… And no matter how much I pinched myself otherwise, the screen in front of me didn't go away.

I was dead. I didn't remember how I died, the cause or what have you, but I knew for a fact that I was dead.

And yet, in spite of that, I felt oddly calm. I didn't feel sad that I was dead, or the people I left behind. Rather, I felt… At peace…

"… But if shitty gamer fanfictions have taught me anything, that peace is about to die a horrible, violent death," I said dully as I stared at the screen in front of me.

I'd been probing it for quite a while, trying to test if it was fake, or touch activated, or something! But nothing happened… Well, time to do the only logical thing and use my voice.

"Yes, I'm dead, can we get started with this now?" I said to the screen dully.

Certainly!

… I hated everything already.

As you are aware, you have unfortunately passed away. It is a tragedy that you died before your time, but the gods have decided to make it up to you. You will be sent to a random anime world, that you actually like, and given customization options based on the world you go to.

"… Okay, I like this so far," I nodded slowly, this was actually going rather well. It wouldn't last, but I was actually looking forward to this now.

Upon a world being selected, you will be given 1000 Credits with which to spend, to create your 'character' within that world. You will lose or gain credits depending on options that you pick. Please note that once you have chosen all of your options and head to your world, they cannot be changed under any circumstance (except difficulty

"So be careful, got it," I nodded again.

Randomizing World…

Randomizing…

Randomizing…

World Selected: Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V

My eyes widened in shock when I read that. I was going to Yu-Gi-Oh? No, even better, I was actually going to get to play Yu-Gi-Oh with fucking holograms!?

"I'm so happy right now," I sniffed softly. "Words cannot describe my fucking joy… Course, other worlds would have been fun, but Yu-Gi-Oh is relatively safe in comparison since everything is decided by card games."

You may now begin customizing your character and the world.

Please Select a Difficulty

[Easy] – Free
Does what it says on the tin. Easy difficulty. You won't find duels very hard, and will be able to easily cruise through life. There are no consequences to playing on this difficulty.

[Normal] – +50 Credits
Average difficulty. A good balance of Duels and Enjoyment. Your opponents won't be total idiots, and will actually use decent combo decks (yes, we're referring to Sawatari before getting his Pendulum Cards.)

I gave a small smirk of amusement at that. Really, the most ironic thing was Sawatari was actually a good duellist in the Manga, to the point he almost defeated Yuto, who easily curb stomped the guy back in the anime.

[Progressive] - +100 Credits
Duels progress based on the point of the story you are in. Earlier on in the story, duels are easier. But as the story progresses, duels become harder and harder. Cards will have either their anime or TCG effects, whichever one is more powerful (some cards will have both effects if they are deemed to be better overall if both effects are usable).

[Hard] - +200 Credits
Duels are difficult, much harder than the previous two difficulties, but your reputation and the respect you earn increases faster as a result of winning. The longer and more vicious the duel becomes, the higher the reputation and respect you earn. Cards will have their anime or TCG effects, whichever one is more powerful (some cards will have both effects if they are deemed to be better overall if both effects are usable).

I hummed softly as I read over my options and, I wouldn't lie, I was very tempted to pick easy. It was free, no consequences to playing on it, and I'd likely be able to curb stomp every single duellist without a single issue, even Zarc.

The issue with that was that I knew I'd reach a point where I would definitely regret picking easy. Yes, my life was on the line- or at least I'd get carded in some instances- but what was the point of going to a YGO world if you weren't going to have actually tough duels?

That being said, I wasn't going to pick hard, not a chance. Sure, I wanted to win, but I wanted to enjoy being overpowered as fuck first, thank you very much.

With that in mind, I chose Progressive.

Please Choose Character Options

[Standard Cast] – Free
The Standard Cast of YGO Arc-V will be present with no alterations.

[Less is More] – 100 Credits
Characters that are not truly plot relevant (That is to say, those who show up and have little to no purpose beyond losing a duel or teaching someone a brief lesson) will be cut out.

[More is More!] – 200 Credits
Characters cut out of the Arc-V Series (Aki, Rio, Shark, Johan) will be added to the world.

[Everyone Possible!] – 300 Credits
Characters cut out of the Arc-V Series and random characters from other anime will be added to the world (the characters will only come from anime you like, and characters you hate will be added as antagonists.)

Hm, that was kind of a hard choice. More is more was obviously a no brainer, but everyone possible was interesting… I could end up with girls like Saeko Busujima- and fuck if that wasn't tempting- but at the same time I'd also have to deal with characters I genuinely hated, like potentially Diodora Astaroth from DxD.

I thought about it for a long time, I really did, before I ultimately decided to go with 'Everyone Possible.' Hey, I was horny, I'll admit it. Plus, I'd get to hopefully beat up characters I hated and romance characters I liked.

Please Choose Starting Dimension

[Standard] – Free
Begin your journey in the Standard Dimension.

[Fusion] – 200 Credits
Begin your journey in the Fusion Dimension.

[Synchro] – 100 Credits
Begin your journey in the Synchro Dimension. You can pay an extra 100 Credits to be a member of the Tops.

[Xyz] – 100 Credits
Begin your journey in the Xyz Dimension.

I bit my lip as I stared at the screen.

Now this was the first genuinely hard choice that I'd been given. If I joined Synchro, I'd have a chance of meeting Aki- a personal favourite of mine- and other Synchro girls much sooner. Plus, I could be a member of the tops which meant more money faster. If I joined Xyz, I'd potentially be able to stop a lot of people from getting carded, and be able to forge a bond with Yuto and the others.

Fusion was definitely an option I'd already crossed off. The only 'Fusion' girls I could think of being interested in were Asuka and Serena… And it was definitely going to have Hell Kaiser- Zane to the people who watched it in English- and other dangerous people there.

Standard was of course an option, but I felt like picking Standard would be a bit of a cop out, and choosing the easy path.

Xyz also had a disadvantage to it if I picked a more fusion based deck. The others might think I was a spy or something of the like, and I'd feel more obligated to pick an Xyz Deck…

I shook my head before I picked the Xyz Dimension. If I could prevent Ruri from being kidnapped, that would heavily fuck over the Academia. Especially if I was able to get Yuto and Shun to let us take her to the Standard Dimension and get away from Academia for a while.

Please Choose a Background

[Drop In] – Free
You will be dropped into your chosen dimension with an ID, Duel Disk, and Deck, all registered to that dimension's systems. Otherwise, there will be no sort of indication of your existence besides a basic background of growing up there.

[Dimensional Friend] – 100 Credits
Born and raised in your chosen dimension, you will be childhood friends with Zarc and Ray's Dimensional Counterpart. There will be nothing special about you besides the fact you are a skilled Duellist. Grants "Memories of Childhood." You may pay an extra 50 Credits to obtain "Communication with Duel Spirits."

[Incarnation of Zarc] – 200 Credits
When the Dimensions Split into Four, so too did Zarc and Ray… At least, that's what everyone else believed. By some miracle, you are Zarc's fifth incarnation despite not looking anything like him, and the inheritor of his will. Grants "Berserk Mode." Grants "Memories of Zarc." Grants "Communication with Duel Spirits."

[Zarc's Rival] – 200 Credits
When the Dimension Split into Four, two people from the original dimension remained. Akaba Leo… And you, Zarc's Rival, though you got de-aged for some reason. You will attend the same school as Zarc and Ray's Dimensional Counterpart. Grants "Memories of Rivalry." Grants "Communication with Duel Spirits." Grants "Zarc's Bane."

I whistled lowly as I read my choices. Those were some options, damn. I hummed, going over the possibilities for each.

Drop In was out. If I was going to the Xyz Dimension, the chances of being considered an Academia Spy were way too high when the invasion came, especially if nobody knew me. And I'd rather not have to fight Kaito, thank you very much.

Dimensional Friend was a good option, one I was considering, but compared to the other two which were only 50 credits more (because there was no way I wasn't going to buy communication with Duel Spirits) it just wasn't as worth it.

Really, my options were torn between Incarnation of Zarc, and Zarc's Rival. Incarnation of Zarc was an interesting one, since it granted me the Berserk State that Yuya often entered in the anime, plus I'd get more insight into Zarc thanks to his memories.

However, Zarc's Rival was more appealing to me. Not only did it grant me Zarc's Bane- which I imagined probably made my draw luck better when against Zarc's counterpart's or something- but it also granted me memories of a rivalry with Zarc.

I thought about it for a long time, before I finally decided on Zarc's Rival. While having a Berserk Mode would be cool, it would mean I'd lose my sanity during those times and became very aggressive and cruel, and I liked feeling in control of myself. Plus, being 'Zarc's Bane' would help down the line whenever I had to duel Yuri.

Please Choose a Deck Choice

[Structure Deck] – Free
Start with a Structure Deck of your choice.

[Seasoned Deck] – 50 Credits
Start with a more experienced deck with added support cards that combos better.

[Experienced Deck] – 100 Credits
Create and start with an entirely custom deck of your choice, including Side and Extra Deck. You may use support cards from anime beyond Arc-V, but may not choose any cards specific to later summoning methods (such as Judgement Arrows, Borreload Dragon, or Borreload Savage Dragon). You may also choose anime only cards.

I didn't even have to think about it, Experienced Deck was the obvious choice here. The chance for a one-off Deck Build with any cards I wanted, including anime cards? I'm sorry that was way too much to pass up.

Please Select an Appearance Option

[As I Am] – Free
You will be in the world in your current appearance.

[Predetermined] – 50 Credits
You will take on a pre-determined appearance based on the choices you have made.

[How I Want] – 100 Credits
You will be able to customize yourself to look however you please, and customize your Duel Disk to look how you desire.

This one was a bit rough as I was starting to run low on credits and I didn't know what else was coming up, but I chose 'How I Want,' there was no question about it. I'd never been comfortable with my own appearance, and the option to customize it and my Duel Disk? No contest, this was what I wanted.

300 Credits Remaining

Please Select a Route Option

[Single Route] – Free
You will have multiple romance options, but will only be able to fully romance a single girl.

[Harem Route] – 100 Credits
You will have multiple romance options, and you will be able to build a harem if you play your cards right, and all girls are single until you either succeed or fail in romancing them, or decide to not romance them. (WARNING! Choosing not to romance some girls can have consequences!) And yes, you can also romance duel spirits. Polygamy is legal in every dimension.

[Alpha Stud Harem Route] – 200 Credits
Women love you on sight, you're just a magnum stud that no woman can deny. All women will fall in love with you on sight, and will constantly be attempting to earn your affections instead of the other way around. Polygamy is legal in every dimension.

I picked the simple Harem Route. Don't get me wrong, Alpha Stud sounded fun on paper, but the way it was worded honestly made it sound like every girl basically turned into a fan girl around me. And that was honestly a major turn off.

I liked girls like Aki and Serena for their personalities. To basically degrade them to fan girls just felt wrong. They would just become boring if they were head over heels for me at first sight, just not fun.

… Plus, everyone wanted to romance Dark Magician Girl.

Please Select your Duel Luck

[Standard] – Free
Your luck is average in duels. Sometimes you get a good hand, other times it's mediocre, and sometimes you brick.

[Above Average] – 50 Credits
Your luck is above average compared to others. You very rarely brick, and will almost always have at least a mediocre hand to work with.

[Plot Armour] – 100 Credits
You have the power of plot armour, which only protagonists and other main characters can wield. You will never brick, your chances of having a great starting hand are high. You may pay an extra 100 Credits to obtain "Card Creation." (Card Creation being the power to create cards in and outside of duels).

… Do I really need to say it? Of course, I fucking chose Plot Armour, and paid the last of my credits to obtain the power to create cards!

Call it bullshit or cheesy all you want, nobody can deny the fucking awesome moment when the protagonist draws a new, never before seen card that completely turns around the duel and leads a sure path to victory.

I just really hoped there weren't more options, since I was now out of credits.

And my hopes were answered.

You have chosen [Progressive Difficulty], [Everyone Possible], [Xyz Dimension], [Zarc's Rival], [Experienced Deck], [How I Want], [Harem Route], and [Plot Armour + Card Creation].

These options will be locked in and cannot be changed if you choose to progress past this point.

Are you sure you want to proceed with these options?

This had all been fairly balanced. Choosing Progressive had resulted in me being able to choose all the most expensive options except for one option. If I'd chosen hard, I'd have been to pick all the most expensive choices. But I was completely happy with the options I'd chosen.

Chosen settings have been locked in.

Converting leftover credits into DP.

I had a small frown at that. I should have expected that you would get minor rewarded for choosing options that use less credits. An extra boost to starting Duel Points would have been nice, and likely would have let me customize a second deck sooner rather than later. But, oh well.

Please customize your Deck.

I grinned slowly. This was what I'd been fucking waiting for! The power to completely one-off customize and create any single deck I wanted!

Though, of course, even if I created a deck, it didn't mean I'd only stick with that deck. There were so many decks I'd fallen in love with over the duration of the series, like Kaito's Galaxy Deck, and Crow's Blackwings. No way that I wasn't going to make them when I get the chance, and countless other decks I thought were cool but didn't get used to their full potential in the series.

It took me a long time but, ultimately, I decided to make a Cyberdark Deck for my starting deck.

Some of you may think that was a weird choice if I was going to the Xyz Dimension, but the deck did utilize Cyber Dragon Nova and Infinity from time to time, even though it was rare.

Plus, the boss monster of the Cyberdarks- Cyberdark End Dragon- was a fucking terrifying beast that could easily FTK if you got the right hand, especially since the life points would be set at 4000. If I were to summon it and use Limiter Removal while my opponent had an attack mode monster, that would pretty much be game unless they got the Great Escape Action Spell.

And since I was playing Progressive Difficulty with Plot Armour, Cyberdarks would crush for a long while before I'd have to make something else.

I did hesitate for a second as I worked on the side deck, as there was one card that I wanted to add that wouldn't fit with the Deck at all, and thus wouldn't see any play for a long time: Dark Magician Girl.

Was I really that horny that I would take up a space in my Side Deck just for a card I wasn't going to use for a very long time?

Yes, I was… But I held myself back- barely.

I hummed and nodded as I finished my deck, pleased with what I'd made. This would be a deck that would ideally breeze me through the early part of the canon, and hopefully the midway point too.

Deck Customization Complete.

Please customize your appearance.

I gave a small grin as a new screen appeared in front of me, though internally I was cringing on the inside a little.

I was going to have to embrace my inner chuunibyou, and potentially my inner edgelord as well.

That being said, I definitely didn't want to look too edge. So, I started off with dark brown hair. A nice basic hair colour, though I added a streak of light blue that ran through a single bang up top. It was Yu-Gi-Oh, nobody was gonna question it.

Next were the eyes. I made the base eye colour amber… But I made the other eye violet. My reasoning behind it? Because I like dichromatic eyes, that's why.

Would you like your off-coloured eye to glow during duels?

Oh, fuck yes!

Ahem… Anyway, next up was working on the body. I gave myself skin a tan to it, but I made the skin colour natural so that the 'tan' would never go away. Again, it was something people would never question thanks to anime logic.

Just to be a little bit of an extra chuunibyou and edgelord, I also gave myself an eastern dragon tattoo with black and gold scales that spiralled along my right arm.

I also… Okay fine, I'll say it. I made my dick much bigger than average. Not so much that I was hung like a fucking horse, but enough that you'd definitely be hard pressed to find someone with a bigger dick than me.

Was it vain?

Yes, yes it was.

Did I care?

No, not really.

Oh, and yes, I did also give myself abs and a much more handsome appearance overall, including abs and muscles.

Yes, this was vain too.

With the main appearance all decided on, next up was deciding my clothes. Honestly, that wasn't too hard. Some basic shoes, black pants, a white shirt, and a black jacket with the sleeves rolled up. I made sure to add the necklace I was currently wearing: a stainless-steel ship steering wheel ornament on a silver necklace, as well as my silver wolf ring.

These were important gifts to me from my first life, so I was definitely going to be bringing them over with me. Plus, they just looked kinda cool.

I finished off the look by adding a black, fingerless leather glove on my right hand. Just to add a bit more flair whenever I drew cards.

My Duel Disk was far simpler to customize. I picked the Standard Dimension's Duel Disk, and went with a flat black with a golden dragon spiralling around the duel disk, the mouth opening up where the deck was so that it looked like I was drawing cards out of the Dragon's mouth.

Would you like to lock in your appearance? Please note that you cannot change your appearance later.

I double checked everything, before I nodded firmly. Yes, this was what I wanted.

Your appearance has been locked in.

Your background story is thus.

Many years ago, in the original dimension, you and Zarc- along with Ray- were three inseparable friends. Where Zarc took the path of an Entertainment Duellist, you preferred to win duels with overwhelming, absolute power, though you always took care to make sure your opponents weren't hurt.

As Zarc delved into madness, you did your best to try and keep him calm and drag him out of it. And yet your attempts were rebuffed as Zarc became completely focused on following the crowd's wishes, ignoring his own wants and desires for the sake of his fans.

Your strong desire to help your friend, along with your nature, gave you the ability to hear the voices of Duel Spirits. And as you hard Zarc's cards screaming in pain, anger, and sadness, you made it your goal to try and stop your friend and rival before he did something that he couldn't take back.

The both of you ended up duelling in several tournaments and, going into the ultimate championship, you were both tied for wins and losses. With the high stakes of the final battle on the line, you unfortunately got a dead draw, and Zarc was able to defeat you. When he ascended as the Supreme King, you stalled him long enough for Ray to activate the En Cards and separate the Original Dimension into four.

When you awoke, you found yourself as a child once again in the Xyz Dimension. While Ray held hope that Zarc's counterparts would never meet again, you knew that Zarc's anger- and the anger of his cards- was far too great to be contained by mere dimensional barriers for too long. And so, you trained vigorously to improve your deck, and improve yourself, for the day that the demon returned. And, with a little luck, you might be able to soothe Zarc's angered soul and give him peace.

I stared at the screen telling me the back story, feeling a little bad for Zarc. In this world, it seemed he'd had a friend who truly tried to help him, but he'd rejected it at every turn… And when a desperate situation came up, he wasn't saved all because of a dead draw.

Wow, that sucked.

You have been granted [Memories of Rivalry,] [Communication with Duel Spirits], [Zarc's Bane], [Plot Armour], and [Card Creation].

You may now view your Stats Page.

"I get a stats page?" I blinked in surprise, before I quickly brought it up.

[Stats]

Name: [Blank]
Age: 12
Title: None
Deck: Cyberdark Invasion
Ace Monster: Cyberdark End Dragon
DP: 0

[Abilities]

[Memories of Rivalry] – The memories of your time in the Original Dimension as Zarc's Rival. Allows you to use all summoning methods without prior training. Zarc's Counterparts are more likely to see you as a rival. Ray's counterparts are more likely to trust you.

[Communication with Duel Spirits] – You are blessed by the spirits of Duel Monsters, able to hear their voices and speak with them. Allows you to communicate with Duel Monster spirits.

[Plot Armour] – There is only one entity that can match God: The Plot. You will never brick. Chances of having a great starting are high. Chances of having a good starting hand are average. Chances of having a mediocre starting hand is low. You will always draw exactly what you need to help turn a duel around in desperate situations.

[Card Creation] – Since ancient times of Duel Monsters, the Protagonist has always had the power to create the cards they draw. Even though it's never stated, you know that's what happened. Now, you have obtained their powers for yourself. You are able to create cards in the middle of a duel to help you win. Your LP must be less than your opponents, and you must have less monsters on the field than your opponent to use this ability. You may only create cards outside of Duels once per day.

[Zarc's Bane] – More than any other duellist, you are Zarc's Greatest Rival, and the only one who can fight him one on one at full power. And while you may have lost the penultimate duel, your desire to save your friend is immortal. Increases Luck when Duelling Zarc or his Counterparts.

I hummed as I read over everything, though I was a little confused on Memories of Rivalry letting me use all the summoning methods without training. Did that mean that, if I'd chosen something else, I'd have to train to use them? It was kinda dumb, but I suppose it made sense in the context of Arc-V.

I also noticed I had a Shop Option in the little tab on the top of the stats page, but I decided to ignore it for the time being. I had 0 DP, so there was no use going to it. I also had a Quest and Triumph Option.

"Why is my name blank though?"

Your name is the last thing to be decided before you venture into the world.

"Oh, okay," I nodded, opening up the quest menu.

[Quests]

[Main Quest]

[The Plot]

Objective: Prevent Zarc from destroying the four dimensions.

Quest Completion: 1,000,000 DP. You get to go to another world, and return to this one at any time.

Quest Failure: You die. And this time, you stay dead.

… Yeah, that was fair. And I didn't seem to have any more quests, so I moved onto the triumph menu.

[Triumph]

The Perfect Duellist

Defeat any opponent without taking damage.

Reward: 500 DP. [Perfect] Title.

I hummed. Interesting, so Triumphs were just nice little rewards I got from duelling that gave me DP to use, and occasionally gave me titles. They probably gave cards from time to time too.

I read through a few more Triumphs, and there were a lot, like performing a Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Summon in one turn, or winning 100 Duels in a row.

"Before I forget, how does DP work in this world?" I asked, since in the Tag Force games DP worked by just being real world currency to an extent.

DP is the universal currency of the world. When you win a duel, you will receive a chunk of DP. When you lose a duel, you will lose half of your DP. DP can be used to buy anything, from cards, to clothes, to food, or even a house if you have enough. As long as you have enough DP, you can theoretically buy anything.

That explained a lot about why it seemed like people weren't exactly strapped for money in the YGO world. And it also helped explain how Sora and others get by so easily, they must have a lot of DP to use. Also, it explained why Duel Monsters was so popular! It was literally easy money if you were a good enough duellist!

Hell, Pros clearly made enough to easily support their families for a long time! Yusho had clearly made enough that even years after his disappearance, his wife and Yuya were living comfortably, and even had enough to feed another mouth in Sora without issue.

"Note to self, duel everyone possible early on for easy money," I muttered to myself.

Selection is now complete.

Choose your name.

"Ah, wait, before I go, are there any other reincarnates or gamers in the world?"

No. This world is for you and only you. Any others who randomize to a world of the same anime will have their own version created, and it is not possible to break the dimensional barriers and let themselves into your world.

I let out a small sigh of relief, that was good… No, great even. It meant that I didn't have to worry about other gamers on top of all the crap I'd be going through in this world, it was just another thing off my chest.

Choose your name.

I put a hand on my chin and thought about it.

The most obvious choice would be to use my own name, but I didn't want to do that. That was part of my past life. While I was carrying over my necklace and ring, it didn't feel right to carry over my name too. That person was dead now, and I was about to become someone brand new. A new name for a new life, it felt rather fitting if you asked me.

My mind then went to the fanfictions I'd written when I was alive. I'd become very fond of my username, the same name I tended to use for OC fanfictions.

But that didn't feel right either, it felt like I was carrying over something else from my past into the future. And, cruel as it might sound, I wanted to leave the past behind and look towards something new.

I thought about it for a long time, before I finally made my decision.

You have chosen the name "Ash Crestfall."

This cannot be changed later. Are you sure you want to choose this name?

This was my chosen name. It did sound a little edgelord in my mind, with 'Ash' being a reference to what I'd turn my enemies too. And Crestfall being a shortened version of the word 'Crestfallen,' meaning that I'd make people feel sad and disappointed when they lost against me.

It was kinda edgy, I'd admit it, but it just felt oddly right.

Character and world customization is now fully completed.

You will now be sent to your world.

Good luck, and have fun.

I looked down at myself as my body was covered in light, and I closed my eyes.

"Well then, I hope this is fun," I smiled lightly as my body was covered fully, and I was sent to a new world.

I grunted as I felt something hard hit the top of my head, looking up tiredly into the annoyed eyes of an adult… Wait what?

"Sleeping in class again I see, Mister Crestfall," the adult told me, and I quickly realised this was a teacher at school as the memories supplied what I needed to know.

Really though? Sleeping in class? … Yeah, that was totally me.

"Sorry Prof, it won't happen again," I lied easily, pausing briefly as he heard my new voice. Oh hey, even my voice was kinda sexy, at least to my ears.

"Well, since you've decided you don't need my class, perhaps you'd be willing to teach the class about this instead."

"Uh huh, what were we studying?" I asked him.

"About Xyz Summoning," he said snidely, and I heard people snickering around me.

From my memories, I could tell that I had a reputation as a coward due to constantly refusing to duel as I preferred to train in secret to hone my skills for Zarc's eventual return.

"Okay," I got up. "Keep my seat warm for me, Prof," I told him as I made my way to the front of the class, many people blinking in surprise and the teacher glaring at me… Though he did sit in my seat.

"Xyz Summoning is a summoning method that utilizes the Extra Deck," I told the class. "Xyz Summoning requires an Xyz Monster to be present in the Extra Deck, and the appropriate conditions to be fulfilled. This is almost always multiple monsters of the same level that you stack on top of one another before placing the Xyz Monster on top of them. The monsters used for the summoning then become Xyz Material that are sent to the Graveyard upon use to activate effects."

I hid a smirk as I saw the class staring at me in surprise, in particular my eyes were drawn to Yuto, sitting in the back row with Ruri. Both had looks of surprise on their face as they stared at me, though Yuto's gaze was more triumphant, as if me explaining this had helped prove something.

"Some Xyz Monsters have effects that allow you to bypass the basic requirements," I continued talking. "An example of this is Ghostrick Angel of Mischief, which allows you to either use 2 Level 4 monsters as material, or to use another Ghostrick Xyz Monster you control as material. In the case of the latter, the Xyz monster and its materials attach to Angel of Mischief as its new materials."

I thoroughly savoured the gobsmacked expressions on everyone's faces before I continued. "Along with that, are Spell cards known as 'Rank-Up-Magic,' that will allow you to target Xyz Monsters- usually on your own field- and use them as material to Xyz Summon a monster from your Extra Deck that is of a higher rank. The Xyz Monster and its materials then attach to the new monster as materials…"

"Enough!" The teacher snapped as he got up, glaring at me angrily. Oh god, he was a 'Dr Crowler' type of character, wasn't he? The kind who detested 'slackers,' and only favoured the type with natural talent.

I hated those types.

"Since you've clearly become a Duel Monsters prodigy overnight, then you won't mind Duelling someone during duelling class after lunch," he glared at me.

"By all means," I shot right back, unwilling to back down.

"Wonderful! In that case, you can duel-!"

"Me," Yuto said, standing up and making everyone look at him. I noticed Ruri gave him a slightly disproving look though. "I'll duel him."

"Ah yes, Yuto, perfect!" The teacher smirked. "When you lose to Yuto, Mr Crestfall, you'll be serving detention for a week!"

"And I assume when I win, I don't get detention?"

The teacher snorted, and a large amount of the class looked amused at my confidence that I could beat Yuto.

Seriously? Just because they hadn't seen me play the game before, didn't mean that I was necessarily bad.

I just rolled my eyes and took my seat as class continued, though the teacher didn't call on me again. He probably didn't want to risk humiliating me, only for me to make him regret it instead.

While he taught the class, my attention was taken when a soft 'ping' rang in my ear, and my Quest screen was brought up in front of me.

[Main Quest]

[It's Time to Duel!]

Objective: Defeat Yuto in your first duel.

Quest Completion: 500DP. Unlocks Ruri as a Romantic Interest.

Quest Failure: [Arrogant] Title, you are more likely to be outed as an Academia Spy (albeit a poor one). Locks Ruri out as a Romantic Interest.

Hm, so I was given quests when important duels came up… That was one harsh failure condition though. People considered me arrogant, I was more likely to be considered a spy for Academia when the time came, and I couldn't romance Ruri?

Granted, the odds of that were low. Zarc's Bane plus Plot Armour, plus the fact my Deck was a Well Built Cyberdark Deck, made it unlikely for Yuto to defeat me. The fact it also let me use cards from Vrains that didn't relate to Link Summoning just made the deck that much better in this world.

While the rest of class passed, I slowly went through all the memories I'd obtained, starting with the memories of the Original Dimension. Just like the text boxes had said, it seemed that Zarc, Ray, and I were all inseparable best friends. It also seemed that Zarc had a crush on Ray and had confessed, but Ray turned him down.

That certainly helped explain some of the animosity Zarc had for Ray in particular if that was the case… Guy was pretty much delving into Yandere territory.

I got to see the life that had been led up until this point, as well as the vicious duel between Ray, Zarc, and Ash. Though the duel cut out towards the end as Ray was playing the En Cards to stop Zarc… Probably some plot bullshit revealed later on, if I had to guess.

With my memories now sifted through, I opened up the store.

Right now, it was pretty bare bones and had booster packs that might as well have been named 'Generic Packs 1 2 and 3.' They basically held some standard, well known Duel Monsters in pack one, spells in pack two, and traps in pack 3.

There were no structure decks on sale, which was kind of a bummer, but if this was anything like previous Yu-Gi-Oh games, it meant that I would unlock booster packs and structure decks as the story progressed, and as I defeated other duellists.

I was able to look up singular cards though to purchase and… Well…

The Winged Dragon of Ra (Anime Version) – 5,000,000 DP

… They were expensive. Very expensive. Thankfully, not all of them were like the Winged Dragon of Ra. And I noticed that some cards I already owned but didn't have three copies of were significantly cheaper than some cards that were worse.

Obviously, the best choice was to pull cards from Booster Packs, and then check to see if they got any cheaper in singles so I could buy extra copies.

Or, in the case of some anime only cards, just buy them from singles… Unless a Booster Pack came out that gave out Anime only cards.

The bell rang, signalling class was over, and I got up, slinging my bag over my shoulder before I left the classroom. I paused when I felt a gaze on me and looked back to see Ruri and Yuto watching me… And behind them, I could see Assembly Nightingale and Dark Rebellion staring at me too.

I turned away from the both of them as I left the classroom, heading to the cafeteria to enjoy my lunch and double check that I knew what all the cards in my deck did.

I'd read all the cards in my deck already, but I couldn't be too safe in this duel if you asked me. There was a decent amount riding on me managing to defeat Yuto… Namely Ruri, she looked adorable. Though Serena would always be my favourite girl in Arc-V, closely followed by Rin.

Yes, I was aware that Rin didn't get enough screen time, but she was adorable and I will fight anyone who tells me otherwise.

Lunch came to an end faster than I would have liked, and all of us gathered in the gym for Duelling Practise.

And yes, that was a real class. No, I don't know why. No, I wasn't complaining.

"As discussed previously, Mr Crestfall, you shall be duelling Yuto!" The teacher- who's name I couldn't be bothered to remember- told us. "Should you lose, you'll be experiencing a week of detention!"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm aware," I told him as I took my Duel Disk out of my bag and put it on, making some people whistle at the design while I stood at my side of the field.

Yeah, my duel disk was fucking cool, eat it nerds.

"Sorry about this," Yuto told me. "I wanted to duel you under better circumstances… But I suppose having a few stakes like this will make sure you get to fight at your best."

"Oh, don't worry, Yuto, you'll be getting my best," I promised him as I slid my deck into place, the cards shuffling as the energy blade formed on my Duel Disk.

Yuto smirked. "Well in that case, let's…"

"Duel!"

Yuto LP – 4000

Ash LP – 4000

"I'll take the first move!" Yuto told me. "I'll start by setting one card face-down!" He slipped a card into his Spell/Trap card zone. "Then I activate it! The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine!" The card immediately flipped face-up.

I raised an eye. "Got an effect there, do you?"

He smirked. "That's right. When I have no traps in my Graveyard, I can activate this trap the turn I set it! When it's activated, I Special Summon it as a Level 4 Normal Monster on my field in Defence mode!" A black fog erupted from the card, turning a pale blue before the boy armour formed around it, blue eyes glowing as they stared at me.

The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine (DARK/Warrior/ATK: 0/DEF: 300/LV: 3)

It looked kind of intimidating, but I was doing my best not to fanboy so hard right now at seeing actual holograms with Duel Monsters. Come on, every single kid dreamed about shit like this! This was so fucking cool!

"When a 'The Phantom Knights' is Special Summoned to my field, I can then Special Summon the Phantom Knights of Stained Greaves to the field from my hand!" he pulled a card from his hand and slammed it onto the field.

Blue fog rose up from the ground, armour attaching to it everywhere, the only part missing being the greaves, as it stood, ready to fight.

The Phantom Knights of Stained Greaves (DARK/Warrior/ATK: 1200/DEF: 600/LV: 3)

"When Special Summoned in this way, Stained Greaves gains 1 Level!"

Stained Greaves LV: 3 – 4

"And now, I overlay my Level 4 Shade Brigandine with my Level 4 Stained Greaves!" He declared as a portal formed in front of him, his two monsters turning into writhing purple lights that shot up into the sky.

"With these two monsters, I build the overlay network!" He grinned proudly as a beam of light shot up. And from it, emerged a dragon I knew very well.

"Fang of Pitch-black Darkness! Rise up against the foolish oppression! Now, descend!" He pulled a card out of his Extra Deck. "Xyz Summon! Appear! Rank 4! Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon!"

With a mighty roar, one of the Four Heavenly Dragons made its descent onto the battlefield. The Dragon of Xyz: Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon.

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon (DARK/Dragon/Xyz/Effect/ATK: 2500/DEF: 2000/RNK: 4)

"There it is," Ruri said to Shun. "Yuto's ace. Ash is going to find it hard to come back from that."

"Yeah," Shun nodded. "When Yuto takes out Dark Rebellion, you know that it's going to be tough to take him down… Still, Yuto clearly wanted to duel him for a reason, so we shouldn't underestimate his skills."

Ruri nodded in agreement at her brother's words, watching the duel carefully.

Meanwhile, I stared at Dark Rebellion, and the beast stared back at me with familiarity… It let out a roar, which I could understand clear as day. It was still angry… And afraid. It was afraid of me, it wanted to re-join with his brothers to become Zarc again, to be 'powerful' again so that I couldn't hurt it.

"Impressive," I told Yuto, fanboying inside despite the situation I was in. "That's a mighty impressive beast you have there, Yuto."

"He's my Deck's headliner, and he's won me countless duels," Yuto told me proudly.

"Well, he won't be winning you this one."

Yuto's smile faded and his eyes narrowed. "We'll see about that. I set one card face-down, and end my turn!"

Yuto Hand: 2

"Then it's my turn, I draw!" I pulled the card from my deck, looking down at my opening hand.

Hm… Yes, I could work with this.

"I'll start by activating the Field Spell: Cyberdark Inferno!" I slid the card into my deck and, immediately, flames burst to life, surrounding the field Yuto and I were using, startling many people in the process.

"What the hell is this!?" Yuto exclaimed in surprise.

"It's the hell where the Cyberdark Monsters reside," I told him. "While this card is on the field, Cyberdark Effect monsters equipped with Equip Cards cannot be destroyed by your card effects, and you can't target them with card effects."

Yuto stared at me in surprise, and I saw him glance at his face-down with minor worry.

His face-down must have been Phantom Knights' Fog Blade. That was a minor worry… But with my current hand, I had nothing to worry about.

"Next I'll activate the effect of Cyberdark Cannon in my hand," I revealed the card to Yuto. "I can discard this card to my Graveyard to add a Machine-Type Cyberdark monster from my deck to my hand," I slid the card into my Graveyard, before another came out of my deck. "The card I'm adding is my Cyberdark Horn," I turned the card to show it off, before placing it in my hand.

Cyberdark Cannon (DARK/Dragon/Effect/ATK: 1600/DEF: 800/LV: 3)

Cyberdark Horn (DARK/Machine/Effect/ATK: 800/DEF: 800/LV: 4)

"Next I activate a Spell Card: Cybernetic Horizon!" I slammed the card into the field. "Here's how it works. I send 2 Dragon or Machine Cyber Monsters to the Graveyard, one from my hand and one from my deck, with different attributes. After that, I can add another Dragon or Machine Cyber to my hand. So, I discard my Cyberdark Horn, and send Cyber Dragon Herz from my deck, to add Cyberdark Keel!"

Cyber Dragon Herz (LIGHT/Machine/Effect/ATK: 100/DEF: 100/LV: 1)

Cyberdark Keel (DARK/Machine/Effect/ATK: 800/DEF: 800/LV: 4)

"Furthermore, because I added a Cyber Monster to my hand through Cybernetic Horizon's effect, it also lets me send a Machine "Cyber" Fusion Monster from my Extra Deck to my Graveyard!"

"Fusion Monster…?" Yuto questioned, everyone else looking equally as confused.

"In exchange however, I can't summon monsters from my Extra Deck this turn, except Machine Monsters," I told them, a card sliding out of my Extra Deck as I revealed it to them. "The card I'm tossing out is my Cyber End Dragon!"

Cyber End Dragon (LIGHT/Machine/Effect/ATK: 4000/DEF: 2800/LV: 10)

"What… What kind of card is that?" Ruri questioned. "Fusion Monster? I've never seen such a card before!"

"Just who is he…?" Shun questioned quietly, eyeing my curiously.

I sent Cyber End Dragon to the Graveyard. "Next, Cyber Dragon Herz activates his effect. When he's sent to the Graveyard, I can add another 'Cyber Dragon' monster to my hand," a card slid out of my deck. "And I'm adding my Cyber Dragon Core! Which I'll then summon out to the field in Attack Mode!" I placed the card on my field, causing the tiny Cyber Dragon to appear.

Cyber Dragon Core (LIGHT/Machine/ATK: 400/DEF: 1500/LV: 2)

"Now Cyber Dragon Core also has a nice little effect," I told him. "When Cyber Dragon Core is normal summoned, I can add a Cyber Spell or Trap to my hand. And the card I'm adding is my Cyberdark Impact!" A card slid out of my deck and I placed it in my hand.

"Are you going to use effects, or are you going to summon out something big?" Yuto asked me.

"Don't worry, I'm getting there," I told him. "But if you insist! I activate Cyberdark Impact! By shuffling Cyberdark Horn, Edge, and Keel into my Deck from my hand, field, or Graveyard, I can Fusion Summon Cyberdark Dragon!"

I slid the three cards back into my deck, one from the Graveyard and two from my hand, and the Polymerisation realm appeared above us, my three monsters forming above me.

"W- What is this!?" Yuto yelled in shock. I couldn't blame him; he was seeing what was- to him- a new summoning method for the first time.

"Three mechanical dragons sleeping in the depths of the underworld! Become one now, and bring forth an era of Darkness!" A card slid out of my Extra deck and I slammed it onto my Duel Disk. "Fusion Summon! Appear now, Level 8! Cyberdark Dragon!"

Cyberdark Dragon (DARK/Machine/Fusion/Effect/ATK: 1000/DEF: 1000/LV: 8)

Out of the portal, Cyberdark Dragon roared as he appeared, looking like a fusion of Horn, Edge, and Keel.

"Fusion… Summon?" Ruri whispered in shock. "What…"

"Kind of summoning is this?" Shun finished for her, his jaw dropped, and the nobody else was much better, not knowing what to think about this.

"Cyberdark Dragon's effect activates," I told him. "When he's Special Summon, I can Equip 1 Dragon-Type Monster in my Graveyard to him as an Equip Spell, and then he gains ATK equal to the ATK of the monster equipped to him! And I have a prime candidate in my Cyberdark Cannon! Plus, Cyberdark Dragon gains 100 ATK for every monster in my Graveyard! And all that will be more than enough to take out your dragon!"

"I don't think so!" Yuto told me. "I chain my Trap: Phantom Knights' Fog Blade, and target your Cyberdark Dragon! Your Dragon's effects are negated, it can't attack, and it can't be attacked!"

Cyberdark Dragon let out a roar as he floated down to the ground, rendered useless… Or so Yuto thought.

"I'll admit, you caught me off guard with that, but now your deck's ace can't help you!" Yuto told me.

"When did I ever say Cyberdark Dragon is my Deck's ace?" I asked him.

Yuto's eyes widened. "What did you say?"

"When I mentioned Cyberdark Inferno's effect, I saw you glance at your face-down. That told me your face-down must have been some kind of targeting card that would keep you safe long enough to use your Dark Rebellion's effect. You love that card, so I'm well aware of its powers. I knew if I brought out a monster with a strong enough effect that could defeat your Dragon, you'd use your trap prematurely when I mentioned equipping something."

"Then… You mean-!?"

"I'm not done yet," I confirmed. "From my hand, I activate Overload Fusion!" I slammed the card onto my field. "Here's how it works. I can Fusion Summon 1 DARK Machine-Type Monster from my Extra Deck by banishing cards on my field and Graveyard as Material! I banish my Cyberdark Dragon and Cyber End Dragon!"

Cyberdark Dragon roared as he floated back up into the air, a ghostly silhouette of Cyber End Dragon forming beside him as the Fusion Portal appeared once again. "Dragon residing in the depths of the Underworld! Take on the power of the Dragon of the End, and bring an Era of Darkness upon us!" A card slid out of my Extra Deck, emanating a powerful aura as I grabbed it, my violet eye glowing brightly. I took great pleasure in seeing Yuto flinch. "Fusion Summon! Rise up, Level 12! Cyberdark End Dragon!"

Out of the portal flew a malicious dragon, with Cyberdark Dragon's body melded onto Cyber End Dragon's, causing it to lose its 'clean' look, now looking dusty and slightly old.

Cyberdark End Dragon (DARK/Machine/Fusion/Effect/ATK: 5000/DEF: 3800/LV: 12)

Yuto gulped and took a step back. "Cyberdark… End Dragon…!?"

"What a beast!" Ruri gasped. "And it's got 5000 ATK!"

"It's huge…" Shun said. "He played this duel perfectly, and read Yuto like a book…!"

I lifted up the last card in my hand. "I equip Attachment Cybern from my hand to Cyberdark End Dragon!" I slipped the card into the Spell/Trap card zone. The golden creature appeared on the field, a tendril unleashing from Cyberdark End Dragon and wrapping around it. "With that, Cyberdark End Dragon gains an extra 600 ATK, putting him up to 5600!"

Attachment Cybern (LIGHT/Dragon/Effect/ATK: 1600/DEF: 800/LV: 3)

Cyberdark End Dragon ATK: 5000 – 5600

"5- 5600!?" Yuto exclaimed, stuttering slightly.

"It doesn't stop there," I told him. "Cyberdark End Dragon activates his effect! I can equip any monster from either of our Graveyards to him! And I'm choosing my Cyber Dragon Herz!"

In a flash of light, Cyber Dragon Herz appeared, before another Tendril wrapped around the small creature, now another sacrifice to my Cyberdark End Dragon.

"What's the point in that? It hasn't gained any extra ATK!"

"He doesn't need it," I told Yuto. "Cyberdark End Dragon can attack each battle phase for every card equipped to it! Since Attachment Cybern and Cyber Dragon Herz are both equipped, that means my Cyberdark End Dragon can attack two times this turn!"

Yuto stepped back in fear upon hearing that. "But that means-!"

"This duel is over," I confirmed. "Cyberdark End Dragon, attack Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon! Dark Evolution Burst!"

Flames gathered in all of my monster's mouths, and all of them were aimed straight at Dark Rebellion.

I heard Dark Rebellion scream as the flames enveloped his body, before he exploded into ashes, causing a small shockwave to ripple through the area that almost made me lose my footing. Thankfully, everyone was too focused on Cyberdark End Dragon to notice.

Yuto LP – 4000 – 900

"Dark Rebellion!" Yuto yelled as his ace monster, his favourite monster, was destroyed by my attack.

"Now Cyberdark End Dragon, attack Yuto directly and end this duel! Dark Evolution Burst!"

It didn't take long for the flames to envelop Yuto, causing him to yell before he fell to one knee, defeated.

Yuto LP – 900 – 0

Nobody spoke so much as a word as the Duel came to an end, Cyberdark End Dragon fading away with the conclusion of the duel. And, immediately upon completion, several screens appearing in front of me.

I blinked, nodding slowly at what I saw, opening up my Title screen to see just what my new titles did.

[Perfect] – A flawless duellist, you're so good that you don't take damage in duels, and get respected for it. Increases DP obtained from Duels you don't take damage in by 20%. Complete further triumphs to upgrade.

[Fledging Royalty] – You beat someone in a single turn, a rare feat in Duel Monsters. Increases DP obtained from Duels where you win in a single turn by 20%. Complete further triumphs to upgrade.

Not bad, not bad at all. I equipped Perfect for now, as I didn't see myself One-Turning people for the foreseeable future, unless I build a deck specifically designed around that.

With the screens now cleared out of the way, I slowly made my way over to Yuto, slowly reaching out to him with my hand to help him up.

Yuto stared at me, and then my hand… And then he began to laugh as he took my hand, letting me help him up. "That was amazing," Yuto told me. "I knew you were strong, I always felt it, but to think you were hiding something like this! An entirely different summoning method I've never heard of before! You don't even have any Xyz Monsters in your deck, do you?"

"No, I have a few," I told him. "But only a couple, this deck is primarily built around Fusion Summoning… You were strong though; I can tell that. You didn't have a choice but to activate Fog Blade there, or you would have lost Dark Rebellion to my attack. It was just your bad luck that I was also holding Overload Fusion. Granted, you had no way of knowing what kind of cards I was holding when I busted out Fusion Summoning."

"Yeah, you really got me," Yuto chuckled. "But I'm glad you did. It shows me that I still have a lot of room to grow. And it gives me an objective to aim for: taking you down!"

"Come at me, I'll duel you any time," I shot right back at him.

"By the way, think there's a chance you can teach me about Fusion Summoning?" He asked me, surprising me. "Any opportunity to get stronger, I'll take without question. If I can get stronger by using Fusion, then Fusion is what I'll use!"

"Me too!" Ruri said as she walked over. "I've never seen a card like that before, monsters not needing Xyz Materials to use their effects, just able to move freely! Teach me too, please!"

"And me, if you have the room," Shun added as he walked over right behind Ruri. "I can't let my friends leave me behind, after all."

I was surprised by their eagerness to learn Fusion Summoning… But, in hindsight, it made sense. Fusion right now seemed more friendly, even if Cyberdark End Dragon was very intimidating. Fusion wasn't a weapon used to ruthlessly hunt down and card their friends and family, it was just another Summoning Method that they could use to progress further as Duellists.

"Alright, I'll teach you," I told them. "But fair warning, it might take some time for me to pick up the cards needed to help you use Fusion Summoning. It's not like Xyz Summoning, where you can just use two cards of the same Level, there's steps and layers to it that have to be followed."

"That's fine by me," Yuto told me. "Let me introduce myself properly now. I'm Yuto. Yuto Amakawa."

"I'm Ruri Kurosaki," Ruri smiled warmly.

"I'm Shun Kurosaki, Ruri's older brother," he told us. "Though Ruri and I are in the same year, I got held back for fighting too much."

"That's why I told you to control your anger better, brother," Ruri told him, making Shun rub the back of his head sheepishly.

"I know, I know, I'm sorry," he told her.

"Well, it's nice to meet all of you," I told them. "You know me, but my name is Ash Crestfall. Though my friends call me Glitch."

"Glitch?" Ruri tilted her head. "Why do they call you Glitch?"

"They always claim their disks must be glitching, because there's no way that my monsters are actually legal. Eventually, the name Glitch just kinda… Stuck."

"Glitch, huh…" Shun smirked. "It's oddly fitting. I hope you won't mind if I only call you that from now on."

"Please no," I told him.

"Too late, Glitch."

"I could just not teach you; you know!"

"That's fine, Ruri will teach me if she doesn't want people to know about-!"

"Ah, ah, ah!" Ruri covered Shun's mouth. "That's enough out of you, mister!" She growled; her cheeks red with embarrassment.

The sight of an embarrassed Ruri was enough to make Yuto and I both start laughing, the girl letting out a sound between a whine and a groan that had Shun joining in too.

Yes, I was rather liking the start to my stay in this new world. I just hoped I could prepare them for the hell that would be coming in two years.
