Chapter 1: The Foolish Hero

They were watching, the puppeteer presiding over the spectacle, guaranteeing that the Tale of Humanity would never Rise above their own.

Since their awakening, when the Sea of Souls touched the shores of Reality, it manipulated the feeble beings that dwelled in it. With the birth of the Era of Quirks, they only had to maintain the vicious cycle of Heroes and Villains and observe as Humanity stagnated.

Hundreds of years passed since, and a new Wild Card, an individual both willing and capable to defy Fate, never appeared. The society they shaped pushing humans to one side of the balance, where they simply accept their Fate. Without an adversary, they were victorious by default, their rule unchallenged.

Until now.

A small and pathetic Record began but in it the Legend that would not only defy, but bend Fate to its Will. A Wild Card just waiting to awaken, a Hero that would Rise above all those that came before him.

They wouldn't allow it.

It was simple to transform the life of the Hero into a living hell; society was already programmed to push the Hero down even before he was born. Some whispers were all it took for the World to turn against the Hero.

But he refused to break.

Even with every word.

I'm sorry, Izuku, I'm so sorry.

Every strike.

Stay down, Deku!.

Every crack that formed in his Heart.

Without a quirk? It's better to give up.

The Hero held to his Dream with a strength that even the World could not bend.

They had enough.

With a plan to break the Hero once and for all, they pushed the gears into motion. A series of events that would make even those with hardened determination crumble.

The attacks fell, one after the other.

Take a swan dive out the roof!.

A perfect meat suit.

Sorry, but without a quirk, you can't be a hero.

But even then, even while the cracks spread to completely cover his Will.

He refused to break.

And when finally pushed to the brink, he started to push back.

My body moved on its own.

You looked like you needed help.

And then, with a wave that was felt from every corner of the Sea of Souls, the Wild Card started to stir, and Fate started to bend.

I have to correct myself.

You can become a hero.

No, they would not permit the Hero to continue to defy their rule; in a moment of rage, they used the Hero's own will to pull him into the Metaverse. The emotion from the boy creating the Anomaly that would be his grave.

Izuku was about to start heading back home after the day he had, and what a day.

From his childhood friend turned bully trying to suicide bait him, he was sure he didn't realize the gravity of what he said, but he wouldn't do it anyway, so better let it go. To being attacked by a villain, just to be saved by All Might (and getting his autograph!), only to learn a pretty dangerous secret that could threaten the current peace that society currently lived. And let's not forget he had his dreams crushed again… he was actually used to it at this point. To top it off, saving his frenemy from the same villain after he escaped All Might, only to be saved by the man again and scolded by the on-scene heroes in the process.

Oh, and then, he was chosen by All Might to be his successor! The man offered him his quirk after deeming him worthy of it.

He still couldn't believe it, but after all that happened he didn't have the energy to question his notion of reality anymore, so just for today, he would leave his millions of questions aside and just roll with it.

Later he would look back at this moment and laugh at the irony of it all.

When he thought the long day he had was finally over and he was free to go back home, hug his mother, and hope that she hadn't seen the news or flood the building with her tears again. He could take a long shower and try to wash off the disgusting smell of sludge, eat as much of his mother's cooking as physically possible, fall in his bed, and sleep for the next fourteen hours. That was when it happened.

Around him, the world started to twist, folding on itself; Izuku was hit by a wave of vertigo so strong he fell to his knees. The typical neighborhood street turned into something else before Izuku's eyes.

The sky became a toxic green hue, the street turning into a barren dirt road, the houses twisting into walls that trapped Izuku on a desert path.

"W-What? Where am I?" Izuku's voice was weak, the effects of whatever happened to him sapping the last of his energy.

He heard the sound of footsteps behind him and slowly turned to face them; his mind turned at what he could only perceive as an amorphous shadow. The figure approached him, and Izuku couldn't help but think, as it was his most powerful and only tool in his life.

'Who is this? Is this their quirk? Is it a villain? Another one on the same day? What do they want?' Thoughts manifested in Izuku's mind faster than an average person could comprehend.

The figure stopped, and, from all around him, a voice echoed. It sounded like a million people speaking simultaneously, the multiple tones fusing into one amalgamation of sonorous information.

"You have struggled long enough; stop this pathetic and pointless Rebellion and accept your Fate!"

With it, the voices of all the people that pushed Izuku down during his life started reverberating in Izuku's mind.

"Useless."

"Worthless."

"Deku!"

The figure facing him started to spasm before bursting into a rain of black sludge. It then condensed, the formless matter gained shape, color, and Power.

It was a man with wings wearing one of the most realistic armors Izuku had ever seen. He even had a sword and dagger, like the actual knights of the period, but the visage only filled the boy with more dread.

The voices were like sharp needles in his mind. As the being approached, it began to look more like an executor ready to deliver the definitive punishment to a sinner instead of a hero coming to save him.

"Is that it? After all that happened today, after finally hearing the words you always longed for, is that how your Tale will end?"

A voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere drowned out the chaos in Izuku's mind. The World slowed to a stop as if it was waiting, "Your dream is finally in your reach; will you let it slip through your fingers?"

Something started to stir inside Izuku. The muffled voices in the background no longer made him despair but instead filled him with righteous rage. He hadn't given up. He hadn't let the people pushing him down break him, and he would not break, not when he finally had a chance to achieve his dreams.

As if dragged by an invisible force, his gaze moved to the burnt notebook on the ground. It should have fallen when Izuku did, but the World disappeared from his sight with his complete focus on it. The only thing that existed in Izuku's World now was him and his notebook and everything it represented, and the voice in his mind.

"This is all that your dream to be a Hero will amount to? After countless hours attaining the Knowledge to even the scales, to try to turn your only tool into a weapon, an instrument to your Ascension, will you let Fate deem it Worthless?"

"No," Izuku whispered into the void, causing waves he couldn't perceive, but that sent a message to all that did, like a beacon starting to shine into the night, "No! I will not let anyone destroy my dream; I will not let anyone suffer like I have! I will become a Hero!"

Izuku's notebook started to shine a bright blue, the flames of his Rebellion against Fate burning the grasp of Fate away from his Record.

"Then Rise! I am Thou, Thou art I!"

The notebook opened on its own, the pages flying into a flurry of paper, ink, and blue flames.

"With our Wisdom, we shall Free Humanity from the Darkness of Ignorance, we shall Illuminate the Path to Salvation! Take the Pen from the Hands of Fate, and Write thy own Legend!"

Izuku took the burning book in his hands and stood tall against the World. From the Depths of his Heart, he proclaimed to the World that he was here, "Persona!"

The flying pages converged into a point, the blue flames revealing Izuku's Other Self.

He was a tall figure, almost five meters tall, wearing green hooded robes that completely covered his body except for his face, which was completely hidden by a red smiling mask, its teeth bearing in a confident smile. His hands and feet were, covered in white bandages, marked by ink stains.

In his left hand, he held an old Japanese-style notebook and a spear in his right, a Hoko with black shaft and grey blade, with a turf of fibers in the base of the blade, making it as much a brush as a spear. At the same time, Izuku looked at the strange weapon, the figure said in a voice carrying both Wisdom and Kindness.

"A pen is mightier than a sword, but this weapon is both. Named Chishiki, Knowledge, for it is with it we fight Ignorance, we survive against the World, and we Ascend to be better." Saying this, he brandished the Hoko, parrying the sword of the winged knight that now looked at them with fear.

"Call my name, announce your Awakening to the World !" The figure said to Izuku, and while nothing in this situation made sense to him, it also felt right, for the first time in a long time, his mind was clear. He knew what he had to do even if he didn't know why, but once again, his body moved before his mind could.

Opening the notebook that became like the figure behind him held, Izuku let the pages fly and ignite.

"Omoikane! Illuminate the way!"

The figure, Omoikane, laughed in joy before lunging.

"Archangel, they are the second-lowest of the angels. The four heralds were originally depicted as being of this rank. However, they rose in the hierarchy for their feats in battling the fallen angels. They are the general staff of God's army, and mediators between God and humans." He recited while trusting his spear, piercing through the Archangel's armor and drawing its dark essence. The Persona used his weapon as a brush to paint the Kanji for Judgement into the air.

The symbol floated for a second before starting to shine a golden light.

"Hamaon!" Omoikane intoned. Various paper charms started to manifest from the symbol, fly to the injured Archangel, and circle it in a tornado of paper and light.

Simultaneously, all the charms stopped before dashing as one and completely covering the Archangel's body. In a final flash, the enemy disintegrated in black particles.

"A well-earned victory, if I say so myself." Omoikane said joyfully, "Unfortunately, I think we better start moving; whoever created this Anomaly linked it to that Shadow. Now that it was destroyed, this space will crumble too." Just as he said that the sky's green hue started to fade while the ground shook.

Izuku's mind once again was filled with a million questions, but he decided to once again just roll with it.

"How do we get out?!"

Omoikane laughed before disappearing in a flash of blue flames. Before Izuku could panic, the voice of his Other Self sounded in his mind, giving it a clarity his overworking brain never once had.

"Focus, to exit an Anomaly, you have to alter the World Record."

"How do I do that?!" Izuku asked worriedly, the ground beneath his feet started to crack.

Use your own Record, focus your Will upon it and connect it with the World."

Izuku closed his eyes and focused in the notebook on his hands, following the words of Omoikane.

He didn't know how he knew what he was doing; it was like an invisible hand was guiding him. His Will seemed to dive into the fabric of the Distortion around him, and then he saw.

The World Record, the foundation that connects to everything in Reality and beyond. He was a mere speck of dust in the sea of stars around him, some as insignificant as him, others immense beyond measure.

"Good, now rewrite it, change how the World perceives your existence, so you are firmly planted into Reality." He followed the instructions like he was aware of its meaning.

Extending his metaphysical hand, he changed the words written on the foundation of the World. The World noticed this, but such an irrelevant deed in the grand scheme of things was merely brushed aside. For now.

Izuku opened his eyes to the sight of a small street basked in the light of the sunset. With a deep sigh, Izuku's body relaxed, letting the exhaustion set in. So much that the boy ended up on his rear, his head heavy and vision blurry.

"It appears that you are not ready for my power; even with the events of the day, you shouldn't be in this state." Omoikane's voice sounded in Izuku's mind.

"No?" Izuku's fogged mind didn't care that he was talking out loud with the voice in his head.

"No, I am Thou, Thou art I, we should be of equal Power. However, the medium for your Record had too much Emotion contained in it. So while it gave me a considerable amount of extra Power, you are not yet ready to command that much." Omoikane sounded like a teacher explaining a complicated question in simple terms for his student.

"So, it is like a video game. You used an item that gave you a bunch of Levels, but I didn't, so I have to grind EXP to Level up and be able to use your powers?" Izuku's mind started to use comparisons to better grasp the concept before setting on that.

It was a simple way to explain it, and accurate by Omoikane's response, "Yes, that is a good equivalent. Now I know that your mind is boiling with questions, and while I will gladly answer every single one of them, it is better to head home."

Izuku didn't need more incentive; pushing his aching body up, he started to make his way home with unstable steps but a firm grasp of the Record in his hand.

"Urgh!" Izuku's groaning was met with his Persona laugher, "I love mom from the bottom of my heart, but I swear she almost broke my ribs with that last hug." Izuku's voice was muffled by his pillow. He was lying face down on his bed, too tired to do anything else.

"She has a surprising amount of strength, but her concerns were justified. Your hastily created plan was a perilous maneuver in that villain attack." Omoikane scolded his Real Self.

"I know, but it was like All Might. My body moved without thinking. I don't know what you did, but now my mind is clear," Izuku said while repositioning himself to stare at the ceiling.

"I am the God of Wisdom, also known as Ya-gokoro-omoikane-no-mikoto, 'Many-Minds'-Thought-Combining Deity.' While your mind was always brilliant, it lacked focus and discipline. Now that I have awakened, your inner turmoil will be no more." The voice full of pride of his Persona left him in awe.

"Now, let us retire for the night. I will answer your questions once your mind is rested."

Izuku couldn't complain; while he wanted to know what was happening, he also felt dead on his feet. Closing his eyes with a final "Good night." He fell into a peaceful slumber.

"Hey, wake up." A voice called from above Izuku. Bleary opening his eyes, he came face to face with the person, her face literally above his own, she was standing behind him, so her face looked upside down from his perspective.

Of course, all these thoughts didn't impede Izuku's knee-jerk reaction of trying to stand up, which led to his forehead smashing on hers.

"Ouch!" The two simultaneously cried, holding their heads.

Izuku blinked the tears out of his eyes to see who he had accidentally headbutted to apologize for it. Now that he had time to look at the person in detail, his face instantly became red as a tomato.

She had shoulder-length pale white hair, velvet blue eyes, a slightly round face, and two butterfly earrings in each ear, making four in total. She was wearing a blue Victorian-style dress; she should be a little shorter than him, but with the heels, she was using, the kind you can stab someone with, she was standing a little taller than him.

While Izuku would like to say that he wasn't a total social train wreck, he had zero experience talking to girls besides his mom. He had almost zero experience talking to people in general. Looking around for something that could save this disaster of a first impression, Izuku realized that he wasn't in his room anymore, but what looked like a library.

He was laying down on a couch, bookcases occupied the room, the far wall was barren save for twenty-two torn tapestries. The whole place illuminated by candles that burned with velvet blue flames, casting the room in a slightly eerie light.

"I see that you had a special way to greet our guest, Angela." A deep and soft voice caught Izuku's attention. At a simple table in the middle of the room, a man was seated in an armchair.

He had the appearance of a bizarre old man with a long nose, pointed ears, and bulging, bloodshot eyes. Izuku knew that quirks could affect the physical appearance of someone, but the man felt different, he couldn't exactly put his finger on how, but he knew whoever he was, he wasn't exactly human.

Chuckling, the man turned to Izuku, who was now seated, "Welcome to the Velvet Room, a space between dream and reality, mind and matter. I am the proprietor, Igor. It is a pleasure to finally meet you, we have waited a long time for your visit, Hero."

Izuku's mind started to run a mile a minute with all the information he just received, but it ground to a halt at what Igor called him. Hero, someone calling him a hero was what he always wanted, the emotions the simple word created in him was enough to bring him to tears.

Something the girl, Angela if he wasn't mistaken, noticed, "D-don't cry, sorry to wake you like that!" She started to wave her arms like he usually does when he was too embarrassed to properly think, what happened most of the time.

"No, it's okay," Izuku reassured her while drying his eyes, "It's just that, that is the first time someone called me a hero."

"It may be the first, but there will be many to come. Your Heart guides you to Save, and your Will not even they could break, these traits will surely serve you well in your heroic endeavors." Igor helped the two out of their awkward moment. Izuku now could keep the waterworks under control, and his mind was already collecting more information.

He knew this situation wasn't normal, and he should be worried about it, but this place gave him a strange feeling of safety he didn't have anywhere else.

"Yes, we already had your Record here, with what you did you'll be a hero in no time!" Angela happily supported, before realizing what she said, "N-not that I read it, no that would be weird right?!"

Izuku, for the first time in his brief existence, was stumped to find someone as socially awkward as him.; which only made him both sad for his social ineptitude and glad he encountered a kindred spirit, "It's okay, I read about heroes online all the time, it's normal to want to know more about them. Not that I really am one."

"But you are! Even before your awakening, you saved that bully after everything he did! And now you are the Wild Card-" She hastily slapped her hands on her mouth, giving the panicked look of someone who talked too much.

With a sigh full of fond exasperation, Igor said, "Yes, you Hero, are the Wild Card. An individual capable of escaping the grasp of Fate and oppose the World."

Before Izuku could choose one of the many questions passing by his head to ask, Angela jumped in and started to talk, "Yes, you opposed Fate, awoke your Persona, and beat a Shadow, all at the same time! Your Persona is also surprisingly strong, with the amount of Power you have, I wasn't expecting that, not that I think you're weak! I-it's just that it is so much stronger than you that you probably can't use it now, not that I'm doubting you!" Then she descended in a storm of apologies and justifications that reminded Izuku of his mumble storms.

After once again reassuring the girl, and reminding her to breathe (yes he saw the irony) he started to ask his questions, "Angela-san, can you explain to me what is happening, what is a Persona, how do I have one, why do I have one, what was that place with the Archangel, what is this place-" Izuku caught himself before he too started to speak more than what was probably healthy.

"Oh, yes! Well, a Persona is your metaphysical counterpart, your subconscious self given form in the Sea of Souls, everyone has one, but few can awaken theirs. That place with the Shadow, the Archangel, was an Anomaly, a Distortion created by Emotion, it connected the Metaverse with Reality." Angela recovered from her little episode and dutifully started to answer his questions. Izuku could understand most of it, excluding some terms he didn't know the specifics but could guess their general meaning.

"Anomalies are Focal Points of Emotion, Labyrinths of cognition created from the residual mental disturbances in the general state of the mass-unconscious. Left to fester, they can plague the mind of the people, but if destroyed, the mental wounds of the public will heal in time." Igor then supplied a more in-depth explanation.

"So, if there's a villain attack, the feelings of the people caught in it will create an Anomaly, if I enter it and defeat the, what did you call it, Shadow?" He got a nod from Angela, "If I defeat the Shadow that holds that place together, the people that created the Anomaly will heal from their trauma of the event?"

"Yes, you caught on quickly. Now for this place, The Velvet Room's purpose is to help you, the Wild Card. I, as your attendant, will do my very best to assist you!" Angela gave Izuku a smile so bright he got blinded by it, but the feeling of having someone supporting him, for the first time in his life, made him so happy he couldn't describe it.

"Now, our time is drawing to an end, we will speak again soon Hero." Igor's voice was accompanied by the sound of a bell ringing, the sound made Izuku eye heavy. He blinked, a feeling of weightlessness washing over him, the velvet blue turning dark.

Izuku was brought back to the land of the living by the sound of his alarm clock, and his Persona.

"Rise and shine young Hero, the day has begun, and your last escapade only lets us with more to think about." Omoikane's voice was far too joyful for that time in the morning, but while Izuku's body was still sore, he had to leave the comfort of his bed and start the day.

"You saw all that?" He asked while making his bed.

"Yes, While not an Anomaly, that Velvet Room seems to be located in the metaphysical part of Existence."

"Everything they told me was true?" Izuku would like to believe the only people to treat him with more than pity or contempt since he was four, but unfortunately, his mind always considered every possibility.

"Yes, they tell the truth. I believe we can trust them unless they prove themselves untrustworthy." Izuku perked up at that, having someone to trust was something so rare to him he valued it like a treasure.

The decision, plus the smell of breakfast told Izuku that today would be a good day. He left his room and the universe didn't take two seconds to destroy the feeling.

"Good Morning Izuku, I'm almost finished." His mother said from her spot in the kitchen, but Izuku didn't respond, his gaze fixed in his living room. There, floating in front of the couch, was an Anomaly.

Izuku knew it was one, what else could the Distortion that seemed to suck the light like a black hole be? It was something twisted, and wrong. Izuku's mind was already working in overdrive, what he learned while asleep gave him the clues to solve the mystery, what Omoikane confirmed, "It seems our mother indeed worries too much, but we shall deal with this problem." Izuku agreed with his Other Self wholeheartedly, plans started to form while his determination hardened, they would save her from whatever was that caused this, he swore while clenching his fists.

"Izuku, are you feeling well?" Inko's voice broke Izuku from his thoughts, she was looking at him with eyes full of concern.

Izuku realized he should have been glaring at the empty living room to her, "Yes! I'm just a little sleepy that's all." His hasty response didn't convince his mother.

"I think you should stay home today, I'll call your school and let them know you are not going."

Izuku was about to protest when he realized that would be the perfect opportunity to deal with the problem currently festering in the house, "Okay mom." She smiled at him and they started to eat.

"Let's wait for a chance to enter the Anomaly, it is best if we deal with it in secrecy, more concern from mother will only cause the Anomaly to grow in Power." Izuku agreed, it would also leave him the chance to prepare, he wouldn't count on luck this time, if he would become a Hero, he needed to be capable to stand against adversity with his own feet.

After a hearty breakfast and some small talk with his mother, Izuku put his plans into motion. Emptying his backpack from the normal school supplies, he stocked it with the first aid kit they had in the house, some snacks and drinks in case the dive into the Anomaly took longer than expected, an empty notebook to help plan against the Shadows he encounters and an All Might action figure for good luck.

Changing into loose pants, his "t-shirt" t-shirt, and red shoes, Izuku was ready. Quietly making his way to the Anomaly, Izuku held his Record firmly in his grasp and connected to the World Record. Once again he was on the Fundament of Existence. Finding the Anomaly, Izuku this time did the opposite of what he did before, altering the World so he would be in the Anomaly's grasp. The World once again dismissed his meager transgression against it, and the Metaverse swallowed Izuku as written in the World Record.

Izuku opened his eyes and was greeted by the green light of the Anomaly entering by the windows. He was in a big open room, but the architecture wasn't so different from his apartment, it was even furnished like it. The sound of wings beating reached Izuku, which made him quickly ride behind a couch in fear of being ambushed by a Shadow, peeking from behind it, he saw what he could only describe as a fairy, but Omoikane had more to say.

"Pixie, good-natured fairies who love pranks. They live in groups centered around a king. They are about the size of one's palm, but can grow to human size as well. They love song and dance, and the morning after their revelries, a fairy ring is found. This Shadow has assimilated this Legend, acquiring Power from it."

"So that's why the Shadow from yesterday was only a mass of sludge and then turned into that Archangel, it assimilated a Legend?"

"Yes, this is how Shadows acquire Power, they can grow stronger after, but their base Power and form is that of the Legend they first assimilate. Fortunately, this is a young one, so it can't be much more than its base, it is a perfect test for you."

Izuku felt his Record shake before opening on its own, "You are not ready to wield my full Power, however, our connection is more than that, I am Thou, Thou art I, my Legend is also yours." From the open notebook, a vibrant forest green shaft started to come from the pages, Izuku pulled it, and in his hands was a Hoku similar to Omoikane except by the color scheme, the blade a pure white along the fibers in its base, "The weapon is Named Gakushu, Learning, for Learning is the key to acquire Knowledge. This is your weapon to wield, show that you are capable of it!"

Izuku held the spear close to him, it was better fitting for his body, but he had never used a weapon before. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, he started to move, the Pixie had its back to him. Holding the shaft with two hands, he dashed at her.

With a thrusting of Gakushu, he drew the dark blood of the Shadow, who cried in pain and surprise. For one second he hesitated but remembered that if he didn't do this, his mother would be left to suffer, every doubt he had lit up in flames, he couldn't call himself a Hero if he couldn't save the most important person in his life. Twisting his body, he batted the Pixie aside, sending it crashing into the wall.

"You'll pay for that!" The distorted voice of the Pixie, full of pain and rage, shouted at him, "Zio!" The spell name created lightning in her hands. Izuku threw himself aside, barely escaping the bolt, the smell of ionized air hitting him as he hit the ground.

"Stand up! Your brush has ink, use it to write your victory!" Izuku jumped to his feet, holding the spear, he felt his hands being guided by his Other Self. With quick strokes, he wrote the Kanji for Sky into the air itself, he then shouted the name of the spell that appeared in his mind, "Sukukaja!" The symbol shone with a green light that enveloped Izuku's body, making him feel light as a feather.

The Pixie was back up, but Izuku didn't give her time to attack again, moving faster than ever before, he closed the distance in the blink of an eye. Thrusting his Hoku, Izuku impaled the Pixie's body in it before sending it smashing on the ground.

The body dissolved back into black sludge, leaving Izuku holding himself up by his spear while taking hard breaths, "A well-earned victory, while we still have to work in your form, it should be sufficient to clear this place if the other Shadows are of similar Power, especially as you gain more Power." Omoikane congratulated the boy.

"Wait, I gain more Power by fighting Shadows?" His earlier comparison with video game mechanics came to mind.

"Yes, you gain Power as your Legend grows, every victory, every achievement, they are all Feats that will be marked in your Record."

"So while cleaning this, not only will we help mom, but I'll get stronger?" Izuku's mind was already formulating possibilities, with this, with his powers as the Wild Card, he could achieve everything he ever wanted. He could help people, he could be better…He could become a Hero.

While All Might had offered him his quirk, One For All, it still didn't feel real to Izuku, but this, this was in his reach, he could finally see a way forward. Izuku's Record appeared in his hands, the flames in his heart materializing into the notebook. He could do this.

He already heard someone say he could become a Hero, but now he could finally say it himself, "Let's go, mom needs a Hero, and I'm not letting her wait any longer!"

He grabbed his weapon and stepped forward, in the direction of his future.

I know, I know, this is the last one I swear!
