I started writing this weeks ago after I'd finished If I Had You and realized a lot of people also liked the Beca/Calamity pairing and I saw there was no story about them, which is really sad, so I decided to write one! This is set during PP3 by the way. I'll keep the rating T for now, let me know what you think!
PS: This is also one of those stories of mine that was supposed to be a oneshot but I fortunately wrote too much hehehe I mean you're welcome
Chapter One - Friend or Foe
Beca wanted to slap herself sometimes. More like slap Cynthia Rose, she was the one who came up with the idea of the riff off against the other bands. Not that it's something she wouldn't have done, maybe she was just upset she lost.
But maybe it wasn't the best way to start the competition. Those other bands were so different, the Bellas never actually competed against bands who played instruments before and all that made the brunette think they were in way over their heads.
Beca let out a heavy sigh as she sipped her beer, sitting at the bar, thinking about everything that happened in the last couple of weeks. She was glad to have some time for herself, she felt like she was always surrounded by people. She occasionally looked up at the news playing but didn't understand a word, of course, because she doesn't speak Spanish and let out a chuckle before shaking her head.
"Being able to laugh at oneself shows good character," a voice spoke from her left side.
Beca turned around and saw the blue eyed brunette who identified herself as Calamity step up next to her and order a beer as well. Beca said nothing and sipped her beer.
"Here to gloat?"
"Oh, no, no," Calamity said. "I was just gonna say, after that riff off thing, it's good being able to laugh at yourself."
"Ha ha ha," Beca said. "Already feeling pretty shitty right now, but thanks for adding to the pile."
Calamity chuckled.
"I hope you know I wasn't talking about you, Bella," Calamity said. "You were actually pretty good."
"It's Beca, actually," Beca said but then realized. "You meant that I'm a Bella. Okay."
Calamity turned to face her and eyed her up and down with another chuckle.
"You've been with these girls long?" she asked.
"Yeah, since college. I actually live with two of them," Beca said.
Calamity nodded, sipping her beer again.
"Well, I'm excited to see what you guys got tonight," Calamity said. "Playing with no instruments sounds pretty hard."
"Kinda, just means you have to make the arrangements," Beca said with a nod, playing with the label on her bottle.
"Why are you here all alone?" Calamity asked.
Beca sighed.
"Sometimes.. I don't know, sometimes I feel like we spend too much time going back to the past," Beca said. "I mean us Bellas."
Calamity nodded.
"But at the same time, they're like my family, so," Beca sighed.
"Some time away from the family's good," Calamity nodded.
"Yeah, definitely," Beca said before sighing. "Oh great, I must be so jetlagged, I'm here venting to the enemy, great."
Calamity looked surprised, placed a hand over her heart.
"I'm the enemy?" she asked.
"Well.."
"I'm only the enemy if you make me the enemy," Calamity said.
Beca gave her a look and the girl offered her a half shrug and a wink.
"See you tonight, Bella," she said before walking off.
Beca shook her head from the experience, deciding to go up to her room to meet the other Bellas.
oO0Oo
Later that night, as the girls watched the other bands, Beca got more and more nervous. They were all great and really seemed to get the crowd going. She seemed, once again, to be in a daze. She told herself it was the jetlag.
As Evermoist was introduced and began to play, the girls knew they were next, so Beca almost forced herself to snap out of it.
"I'm gonna smile when it hurts
Going out tonight with all my girls
Party 'till I can't see straight"
"Wow, they can really shred," Emily said as they watched the band perform.
"They're better than Saddle Up even," Aubrey spoke.
"Yeah, okay. So they're pretty and polished," Beca said, watching the lead singer, Calamity, in particular, "and sexy and, like.." she quickly pulled herself together once she realized, but she was lucky her Bella sisters weren't watching her. "I don't know, I was just listing stuff, and now I'm sad."
Beca felt someone put their chin on her left shoulder and tapped their cheek once she learned it was Lily and they were informed they were up next.
"Great," Beca said with a sigh.
As Evermoist finished the song, Calamity stepped away from the mic and stared at the Bellas backstage. She locked eyes with Beca and licked her upper lip.
"Thank you so much," Calamity said to the crowd. "We are Evermoist."
Calamity and the girls walked off stage, two of the other girls high fived as they passed the Bellas. Beca tried to hide the butterflies in her stomach, they could really mean anything.
Thankfully for her, performing with the Bellas was always a good distraction. Beca could turn her body and mind into auto mode and just let the magic happen. And hearing the crowd cheer as they sang and danced together for the first time in 3 years felt so good, Beca soon found herself loosening and really throwing herself in her vocals.
Beca was in her own world and yet with her Bella sisters, which made her feel so great. This is what she had come for after all.
That is, until they were interrupted.
Beca felt like an idiot all over again when they were all saluting and being laughed at. Going back to her room seemed like a great idea, but she felt compelled to stop at the bar beforehand, this time she ordered a Scotch neat.
"You know, mixing beer and Scotch can really mess you up," the voice was there again and Beca turned to see Calamity smirking at her before taking the stool next to her.
"Yeah, sure, one beer I had a few hours ago will definitely mess me up," Beca said.
"I like your sarcasm," Calamity said.
"Well, can't laugh at myself right now," Beca said, spinning the drink in the glass before taking a sip.
"Yeah, I'd laugh at your blonde friend who told you to salute," Calamity said.
Beca chuckled.
"But you were actually great tonight," Calamity said. "I'm surprised."
"Thanks," Beca said. "Wasn't our best performance. It was barely a performance."
"I didn't mean your group, I meant you," Calamity said, making Beca look at her. "You were really in your zone."
Beca found herself offering her a small half smile, feeling herself getting less tense.
"You guys were great too," Beca said. "Better than the other bands."
Calamity smirked.
"Thanks," she said.
Beca sipped her Scotch again and shook her head. She looked around and saw Emily walking across the bar, she stopped and looked at her for a moment in confusion before continuing on her path.
"Can you teach me how to play guitar or do you think it's too late for me?" Beca asked.
"I thought you guys liked to keep strictly oral," Calamity said before laughing. "Seriously."
Beca shook her head.
"I should just go to my room and drink alone," Beca sighed.
"Drinking alone is depressing. Drinking with company is much better," Calamity said.
Beca eyed her suspiciously before sipping her Stotch again.
"You know, I better go before I do anything I'll regret," she said, sipping the last of her Scotch. She realized what she said and stopped, shutting her eyes. "I mean, 'say'."
"I understand what you mean, Bella," Calamity nodded, sipping her beer.
Beca eyed her again.
"It's Beca," she said.
Calamity eyed her up and down with a small smirk again and sipped her beer.
"I should go," Beca said awkwardly.
"I'm not stoppin' you," Calamity said.
Beca said nothing but she still found it hard to step away.
"See you later, Bella," Calamity smirked and winked and Beca awkwardly stepped away, finally going to her room, feeling the other girl's eyes on her backside as she walked away.
Young & Hungry quote (Because why not?)
Sofia: Just tell the doctor you need weed to calm your nerves.
Gabi: Hey, that's a great idea! And then I won't be lying, but since I won't be lying, I won't be nervous. So I will be lying.. but I also won't be.
Sofia: Are you stoned already?
