The Way Home
"Direct hit on the port nacelle!" Tom warned. "I can't evade their shots!"
Kathryn called, "Weapons systems are down!"
"We are losing power to shields," Seven reported.
His heart thudded painfully against his ribcage. His nostrils stung, and his lungs ached from smoke inhalation. Conduits and consoles sparked as another direct hit struck the shuttle. He shielded his eyes. Shards of electricity grazed his skin. Out of the corner of his vision, Chakotay saw Kathryn be thrown backwards by an energy surge through her station. Tom's alarmed shout was drowned out by a final blast that threw the rest of them roughly to the floor as well. And then, suddenly, all was quiet except for the heavy thunk of the Delta Flyer falling onto the floor of a docking bay.
Chakotay pushed himself upright and saw Kathryn stirring. Tom didn't get up.
"Everybody, grab a phaser," Kathryn groaned, pulling herself upright. Seven glanced at Chakotay in silent communication. Their captain looked dazed. Maybe fighting wasn't the best option right now, but they unholstered their weapons anyways. The door to the Flyer was being pried open.
Why? Chakotay thought. Why does this kind of thing always happen to us?
