Michael Nesmith let out a sigh as he stepped into the small apartment, the paper under his arm. After a twelve hour shift of doing almost nothing worth the while, he was exhausted. He locked the door and threw the keys onto the counter.

As usual, he was able to get the paper free today. Partly because it was already in the evening and most people didn't want them then, and partly because it was actually yesterday's paper. Frankly, Michael didn't mind if he was a day behind on the times. Any amount of money saved, even if it was just a few cents, would be worth it.

He went into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of Coke, popping it open and taking a small sip before he sat down in the recliner, looking at the newspaper.

"Let's see…" he whispered to himself. "What's going on in good ol' Hackensack…"

Somehow, there never seemed to be anything interesting on the front page of the paper. He briefly skimmed over it, mostly looking at the pictures rather than the actual stories. It's not like there was much happening, anyway.

He flipped around in the paper, one story catching his eye.

"LA-Based Rock Group The Monkees Debut Album Reaches #3 on US Charts" he read aloud, a slight smile on his face. There wasn't any news here, so they had to borrow some California's.

"Good for them," he said under his breath, reading more.

"The up and coming rock group from LA has just released their self-titled debut album. The album itself is a diverse mixture of different genres and styles, already showing the many talents the group possesses."

"Wow," Michael nodded, eyes widening. He had to admit, he was amazed. It was impressive for any group or musician to get this amount of praise, especially on a debut album.

Below that paragraph, was a photo of The Monkees, presumably at some sort of press release of their album.

"From left to right," Michael continued, reading the caption of the photograph. "Drummer Micky Dolenz, singer and percussionist," he had to admit: it was amusing how a band could have both a drummer and a percussionist. "Davy Jones, bassist Peter Tork, and guitarist Mike Nesmith."

He chuckled slightly, shaking his head.

"Guess I'm a rockstar too," he muttered. A few years ago, he had a friend, Sean, who was always showing him different news articles of famous people with his name doing big things. One Mike Nesmith was a track runner, another was a chef. There was even an M. Nesmith who was some sort of young prodigy lawyer at a large law firm. And now, there was an "up and coming" musician. It always seemed like every other Mike Nesmith was famous and successful, and he wasn't.

He let out a sigh and was about to turn the page before he got a better glimpse of the photo. It was him. It felt like he was looking at himself through a mirror.

He didn't just share a name with the guitarist, but also shared the same face.

For a second, he half believed that it was him that was at that press conference and he just didn't remember it.

None of the other Mike Nesmith's he's read about ever had any pictures, but this one did. And it was his picture. The one and only difference between the two was the haircut.

Already, a hundred thoughts began racing through his mind. He didn't know what to think or do. All he knew was that he needed to find this band, in any way he could.

Quickly, he ran to the phone and dialed a number, not able to read the rest of the story.

"Pick up, pick up, pick up," he whispered to himself as he waited.

"Mike Nesmith!" A familiar voice said on the other end. "How's my favorite 'LA-based up and coming guitarist?'"

Mike sighed.

"I guess you saw it too…" he said quietly, looking down.

"Of course I've seen it," Sean scoffed. "Who do you think I am? Anyway, have you seen that picture? I'm amazed no one's come up to you asking for your autograph. With a face like yours, I'm sure—"

"Look, I just need your help, okay?" Michael asked quickly. He was practically praying it wouldn't come off as too desperate.

"Shoot."

"Um…" he started, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "What else do you know about the Monkees?"
