Welcome to this story. What do you know, I have yet another Spyro fanfic going. I should really try to wrap up some of my others, but things have been slow. I will note, this story is a bit of a test in the whole 'human turns into dragon' genre, but more on that at the end. So for now, enjoy.

Of note, I retconned Meredy's age to 3 instead of 4. I don't know anything about child psychology , but that her age did not quite match up with how she was portrayed. Side note, I made a few mistakes in this chapter I am currently trying to correct. Also note, Meredy is 3, I did not mean for her to be able to read herself, i mean't to say she was read stories. Whoops. I corrected that now.

Pain overcame a young child's body as she woke up with a jolt, as if struck by something. She blinked her eyes open, only to find herself but in her bedroom like she had been the previous night, but instead in some kind of forest. However, as she tried to look around, she found she could barely lift her head, almost like she had no control of her muscle movements.

Meredy groaned in mild pain as she tried to move her neck. She could at least move her eyes though.

Quickly, however, she noticed something off. Instead of a nose like she always had, she instead had a… muzzle!

"W-what?" She managed to choke out. Since when did she have a muzzle? Suddenly, she found the muscle to move her neck, she noticed, and now felt as well, several new limbs she did not have previously.

Wings, a lizard tail, black scales, four legs…

Then it hit her.

She was a dragon!? "What? How did- when did this? I must be dreaming, right? Any second I will wake up." She thought to herself. She waited, and waited, but nothing happened.

After a bit, she became desperate. She tried desperately to jolt herself 'awake' but found it would not work.

After about ten minutes of trying, it dawned on her this was real. She somehow found herself as a dragon. In the middle of some random forest.

Her first question was how? How did any of this happen? Why did it? Where is she?

She could not help but be slightly fearful of herself. She had been read many fairytales of dragons being evil creatures. And now she was one?

She was almost scared of her own body. Yet, young as she was, even she knew that it would be crazy to be scared of one's own body.

So, she took a moment and calmed herself. The shock was certainly still there, of course, and would not fade anytime soon.

Still floored at this realization, she then recalled how she seemed to be out in the woods alone, hard as it was to forget that…

Her mind began to wonder. What monster could be out here? Where was she? Where was her mother? Would whatever is out here be hungry?

She hoped not. She was young, but she knew how vulnerable she was. A small creature, barely able to move or defend herself. She would be a sitting duck.

She tried to activate her legs, but found she barely had the strength to stand. In fact, she barely knew how to at all, like her brain was rewriting itself. She could barely even summon the effort to move her new limbs or tail.

"Ok… just keep trying, like Mom always says." She muttered to herself, though it would have been hard to understand her since she is not used to moving her jaw in this body.

Slowly, but surely she tried getting up, but failed. Slowly, she knew, her brain would have to rewire itself, before she got used to this new body of hers.
It would be like crawling as a baby. She would have to learn how to walk again.

The child groaned at this , as she struggled to get up. Barely having any kind of energy to do this, kept falling back to her stomach.

After the fifth time she groaned again.

This was going to be a long process of trial and error.

After what most have been a few hours, she had finally gotten used to her legs enough that she could at least walk, though it was wobbly and unstable. It was like a pretending to be a puppy or something.

For the three-year old, she could compare the experience to some of the games she played as a human.
However, it was hardly fun. Even though she knew how to walk, albeit barely, she still could not fly or anything. Nor could she breathe fire, like she knew dragons did.

As she walked through the forest, she saw a puddle of water.

When she got a look at her reflection, her eyes lit up in surprise.

She had black scales, as she saw earlier, but she finally got a better look at herself to note the rest of her features. She was tiny, even smaller than she was as a human, maybe just two feet tall at most. She had black scales, a blue underbelly, blue wing membranes, and tiny wings and a black tail. Her horns were blue, but were little more than stubs, nowhere near grown.

So this was her now. She… was not sure what to make of it.

She sighed and pressed on.

Many thoughts ran through her head. "Will mommy still recognize me? Will my friends? Will I even find my home?" She continued to think.

She did not have answers for any of this. All she could do for now is… actually, she

Had no idea what she was looking for. More humans or something? Someone who could help?

She sighed again.

She just hoped she could find… something.

As she kept moving, she took a look around the forest.

It was like those forests she had back home. The trees and grass looked… well, like any normal tree and such. Some of the flowers were… a bit weird. Some looked like lilies and such but… seemed to glow. She hardly cared though.

Suddenly, something dawned on her again. She was alone out here. Of course she already knew that, but stopping to look around instead of focusing on her thoughts made a certain feeling of dread sink in.

She could not defend herself, even as a human. And now, she was a tiny dragon, who could barely walk or do much of anything.

Who knew what predators were lurking out here? Her imagination went wild, as she began to hyperventilate.

If she were a dragon, a creature that was only supposed to exist in her imagination, then what other monsters could live out here? Did they… eat baby dragons?

She looked around, as her situation finally sank in, now that she had her mind off just learning to walk, and had a more clear head.

She truly was alone. The forest seemed to grow darker and darker, as her imagination started playing tricks on her.

Finding a sudden burst of adrenaline in herself, she ran in a random direction, not caring where she was going. Though her running was unstable, she somehow found it in herself to stay up right. Tears ran down her face.

She was scared; she just wanted out of this forest.

"I wanna go home… mommy, where are you?" She thought to herself, almost begging for some one to show up.

She ran as far as she could until she suddenly tripped over a tree branch.

"Oof." She moaned as she looked at her previous path.

Of course, it was a tree branch that broke her run.

She got up, but then noticed something; a dirt path. Almost like one you might see in a national park or something. It was large, and covered by many tree branches and various foliage, but she could still make it out. She smiled at this, her fear disappearing

She recalled from going on walks with her mommy that these paths were found in things like parks. They did not just create themselves. Surely someone would be on it or at the end of it.
She could find help.

However, just as she was about to enter the path, the sound of paw steps nearby alerted her.

She darted into a nearby bush, and hid.

She did not know if it was someone or a random animal walking past.

But she wanted to be safe to find out. As the newcomer came into view, she gasped silently, in shock.

A large black dragoness, of slender build, with a violet underbelly and wing membranes, and a silver tail blade, stepped into her view. She had rounded a corner on the dirt path, which had been hidden in foliage. She was getting closer to the spot the child hid in.

As she stepped ever closer, Meredy saw just how big she was.

She was huge, at least multiple times Meredy's size. Her paws alone could almost fit Meredy's whole body in her one.

The dragon seemed to be female, going off her slender build. She did not seem to notice the child in the bushes.

Meredy would have been content with it to stay that way. She knew dragons were evil; they ate children like her all the time. At least in stories. If they were real here, then who is to say they would spare Meredy, even if she was a dragon now too? The child backed out of the bush slowly, hoping to sneak off. However, the sound of snapping twig made Meredy's blood run cold.

The dragoness stopped dead in her tracks, and turned her gaze. She was looking right at Meredy.

"Hm? Little one, what are you doing out here-"

She was cut off as Meredy screamed in fear. This dragon was scary, just like the stories she heard about them. She recalled the stories she was told. Of how dragons were creatures of destruction, and ate anyone who they came across. This one was no less scary to look at than the drawings she remembered seeing of them; her lithe form combined with her dark colors and tale blade were like something out of a nightmare for the little girl.
She stepped back in complete fear. For some reason, the dragoness did not attack her though.
The dark dragoness lowered herself a bit, and stepped closer to the girl.

"Little one, are you ok? Are you lost?"

She asked, in a surprisingly calm voice. She sounded almost… friendly.

But Meredy knew better than to trust a dragon, ignoring the fact she was now a dragon too. But she was not meant to be one! So she was different.

"J-just stay back, please. Don't hurt me." She begged.

The dragoness lowered herself more, and approached slowly.
"It's ok. Please, just calm yourself. " She tried.

But the hatchling kept backing away. Seeing that the adult dragon would not back off, she did the only thing she could think to do.

She turned and bolted.

"Wait-!"

She sprinted as fast as she could, away from the scary dragon. She did not know if the dragoness was following her, but she made no attempt to turn around and check.

She darted back into the thicket, the overgrown features of the forest covering her trail. Surely the dragoness could not find her if she hid well enough, right? She stood no chance against the adult dragon.

She bolted as fast as she could, while she heard the adult dragon's voice in the background.

"Little one, it's not safe away from the path! Wait-" She tried, but Meredy tuned her out.

Instead, she kept running.

After a while of running, she was growing weary. She was exhausted and hungry, but kept running. Tears streamed down her face. She did not want to be here, she wanted to go home. She just wanted to see her mother again. What pulled her here, why was she a dragon now? Why was this happening?

She did not know.

Eventually, she stopped in a clearing, as the sun was going down.

"Ok, I think I lost them."

She muttered. She looked at herself, covered in scraps and bruises. She could barely stand and didn't even have food or shelter for the night. Could this get any worse?

She huddled into the clearing she found herself in. Might as well make herself comfortable.

The grass felt… soft. Somehow, despite being out in the open, the feeling of comfort made her feel secure. Like being wrapped in a blanket. It was a lovely feeling, one she missed in her short time in this weird new place. Maybe she could spend the night here?

The rustling of something in the thicket answered her question. Her comfort and sense of security quickly disappeared to fear. She froze in horror as a large, canine-like creature jumped out. It was huge, over ten feet tall with grey fur and scars across its body. It eyed the hatching with a ravenous gaze.

She got up, and slowly started backing away. She did not know what to do; she was tired and could barely run at this point. Maybe she could talk to it?

"I-I'm sorry if I bothered you. Or if this is your spot. I can leave…" She tried.
The beast ignored her, and snarled more. Her blood ran cold, but she kept trying to reason with it. She slowly started backing away.

"I'm sorry I made you angry."

It only glared at her more, licking its muzzle, as if looking at dinner. Meredy's fear grew worse. She backed away more, even slower, worrying a sudden movement would provoke the creature.

"P-please… I just want to find my home. Just let me go." She begged, tears falling from her eyes.
The canine still gave no indication it either understood her or cared.

"I-I'm really not tasty, just let me go…"

The beast lunged at her. On instinct, the hatchling jumped back and summoned every last drop of energy she had.

Shrieking in terror, the hatchling bolted as fast as she could, but the wolf was hot on her tail. It growled and snarled at her, as the hatchling shrieked. "Someone help me!" She yelled.

However, try as she might, she could not remain steady on her legs, having barely learned to walk in this new body. Plus, her exhaustion was quickly over taking her body. She tripped rather quickly over a tree root in her path, having been too dazed to notice it.

Hitting the ground with a thud, the hatchling groaned in pain. She tried desperately to get up, but was way too exhausted to even do.

The wolf caught up quickly, standing over the hatchling with a ravenous gaze. It licks its muzzle, as if in anticipation of a meal.

Terror overcame the hatchling's face.

"Please… don't." She begged. The beast ignored her and approached. She tried desperately to crawl but it pinned her with a paw. It lowered its maw over its small body.

The child began thrashing and squirming like mad, but she could not break the beast's grasp.

"No, no! Please… don't eat me!" She begged one last time. The beast ignored her. She cried like mad, and closed her eyes. It lowered its maw mere inches from her body.

This is it. This was how it ended for her, she realized.

"I'm sorry mom." She thought.

However, no sooner has she done this, she felt the weight of her predator be pulled off her.

She caught the form of a black dragoness fighting off the canine. It clicked in her brain that this was the one from before.

The dragoness thrashed and clawed the canine, who dodged and retaliated in turn.

Averted her eyes, not wanting to see what happened.

"She's not on the menu!" The dragoness roared. After fighting the beast only a bit longer, she breathed some kind of black mist, which seemed to envelop the canine. It seemed to suffocate from it, enough that it decided to back off.

The wolf ran off, yelping in fear. and the black dragoness turned to the hatchling.
She towered over the hatchling, her lithe features highlighting her intimidating appearance and colors.

Meredy's eyes lit up in terror. She struggled to summon the strength to get up and run. In a a last ditch attempt to escape, she struggled to her feet and managed to run only a few feet before she tripped, the dragoness' eyes heightened in concern.

"Little one!" She gasped as she ran over. Meredy only grew more terrified as the dragoness got closer. "Are you ok? Did it hurt you?"

Helpless and unable to pull herself back up, she curled around herself and started crying.

"Please don't hurt me!" She begged. She started crying, not caring how she looked. She couldn't take it anymore.

The dragoness raised a brow.

"Hurt you?" She parroted. "Why would I do that?"

Meredy cried more. "Who are you… you're huge!" she said, glancing up at the adult dragon.

The dragoness lowered herself, and nudged the hatchling in a friendly manner with her own muzzle. "Little one, I am not going to hurt you."

Meredy took some small comfort but was still nervous. Her crying lessened just a bit, and but she was still curled in on herself. She looked up shyly.

"My name is Cynder. I was nearby on a walk and saw you wandering alone. What were you doing out here alone? It's dangerous."

Meredy glanced up, still scared. "I don't know; I just woke up out here alone. I don't know why … I don't understand any of this!" She sputtered, pouring her heart out.

The dragon's gaze softened. "You poor dear. Do you… know if your parents were close by or where you might have lived?" Cynder asked, trying to find something she could do to help.

"I don't know where she is or why I am here. I just woke up and I don't know why. I don't know where my mom is or why I am like this… " she said, bawling her eyes out.

The adult dragon leaned in. Cynder had a confused expression on her face. "Umm… why don't I bring you back to Warfang for now, dear? It's not too far from here, only half an hour of flight. Maybe we can find help for you there?" She said,

Meredy muttered an OK, not really knowing what this Warfang was but she hardly was in the mindset to question anything. This dragoness looked scary but she seemed nice enough, and Meredy knew she was too tired and hurt to do anything herself.

"My name is Cynder by the way. What is your name?" Cynder asked.

"Meredy."

Cynder smiled. "Cute name dear. Here, let me get you out of here." She said in a kind tone. Taking the girl gently by the scruff, which felt weird to the child. Cynder began to walk off, likely to a clearing where she could take flight.

Being carried like a puppy felt very odd to the former human. Yet for some reason, she felt an instinct that calmed her, even as she dangled from the maw of a great beast. It was all so weird to her, and her young mind could barely register anything.

She had no idea where she would go from here. She just hoped for… something to make sense soon.

"Thanks for saving me. Sorry I was scared of you." The child added.

"It is no trouble at all, little one." Cynder stated.

After a few minutes, she was out in the clearing again. From here, she took flight, with the hatchling still in her jaws. Meredy watched in wonder as the ground beneath them became further and further away. Yet, somehow, she felt secure in the jaws of this dragon.

She sighed, she hoped wherever they were going, something would make sense soon.

Meredy could not believe her eyes. She was flying! Well, in the jaw of a dragon, but still. The lush forests beneath her made her jaw drop nearly. The sights from this high in the air were amazing! It was almost like being a bird; held by a dragon but still.

After a bit, the pair had gotten closer to a massive city. Large stone buildings adorned the city, some with reddish dome roofs. From above, Meredy saw what looked like a sprawling city , but more medieval. It was hard to describe it all but many of the roads and buildings were all made of stone and stone bricks, in light colors of brown. The streets were lined with all kinds of stalls, selling various wares and items Meredy did not recognize. But the weirdest thing to the girl was not the medicinal buildings and roads, but the creatures! All kinds of strange creatures walked the roads. They looked to the girl like cheetahs and moles, but they walked upright and wore clothes like a human. What was this?

But of a more scary note to the hatchling were various dragons, of various colors, shapes and sizes. It was impossible to describe the colors of each and every kind she saw.

Meredy grew fearful. Sure the dragoness who was carrying her seemed nice, but dragons were always the villain in the bedtime stories her mother read her.

She could barely get her head around the fact that she was a dragon now too. Regardless of the situation, being around so many dragons was scary! They were massive and had claws for crying out loud! And on top of that, she was still in some strange world in a strange new city, in a new body. Who would blame her for being scared?

The Dragoness had landed in the middle of a street. Setting the hatchling down, she lowered her head to Meredy's level.

"Ok, little one. I was due to meet my mate at a nearby store. He can help us further." She said.

"O-ok…" the child replied meekly.

Cynder nodded, noting her shy demeanor.

The two began walking,, Meredy staying very close to Cynder.

Everything around her was huge! Especially the adult dragons. Each one she walked by or who she gazed at, she shrank in fear. Cynder noted this after a the first few times.

"Uh, would you like me to carry you? You seem nervous."

Meredy nodded with haste. She allowed Cynder to grasp her by the scruff again.

Sure enough, though, the rest of the walk was not very long. Within a few minutes, the pair were near some kind of market stole, where a large purple dragon with lighting-shaped yellows horns and a yellow underbelly waited for them. When he saw the pair, he smiled.

"Cynder!" he said, walking over to greet her.

Cynder set Meredy down and nuzzled her mate in greetings.

Meredy watched them do this. So dragons showed affection to one another? That wasn't in the fairytales her mother read her…

Her thoughts were interrupted when the purple dragon took note of the hatchling.

"Oh, who might this be?" He said, leaning down to greet the child.

Meredy, ever fearful, hid behind Cynder's front paw. Spyro raised a brow, as Cynder laughed slightly.

"Uh, Spyro , this is Meredy. I found her while I was out on my walk in the forest. She…. went through a lot, and is scared and confused. Please, be slow with her." She stated.

Spyro nodded, and lowered himself to her level, trying to look less intimidating.

"Uh, so… hi little one." he said, awkwardly.

"H-hi…" the hatchling said.

Spyro tried to give a more comforting expression. "Uh, sorry about... what happened. But, don't worry, I will do my best to help." He said, a bit awkwardly. He clearly did not talk to children very decided now was a good time to speak up.

"She said she doesn't know where her mother is, or how she got into the woods alone. I don't know what to do, but maybe you can help?" She explained and inquired.

Spyro looked up and nodded. He stood back up to Cynder's level. "Of course, Cynder. Why don't we pay a visit to the city guard, see if they saw anything?"

He suggested.

Cynder nodded, and looked down at Meredy, who was still under her paw. "Sweetie, it's alright. The nice guards in the city are going to help us. But, can you tell me a little bit more about your mother?" Cynder pressed.

Meredy paled. She was young, but even she was shrewd enough to know telling these dragons that she was actually human could be… confusing. But she had no idea if they could really help her or not. She was from another world, or at least she thought she was. Dragons are not on Earth, right? But maybe her mother was sent here too?

She did not know, but it was worth a shot.

"Uh… mommy's name is Lilith." She noted.

The two dragons shared a glance and nodded. "Ok, can you tell us what she looked like?

Meredy paled. How did she describe her mother to these two? She pondered her answer.

"Ummm… like me? But taller." She said.

Both adults nodded.

"Well.. ok then. Uh, what element might she be? You look like you might actually be shadow? Is your momma the same element?" He asked.

Meredy raised a brow. "Element? What's that?"

Both dragons paled. Cynder looked down at the hatchling with a raised brow. "... the basic magic of our kind? You look about 3; most hatchlings are taught this by your age, even." She noted.

Meredy looked confused, and Cynder sighed.

Spyro, unsure what to say, just shifted the subject.

"Just follow me, we should be at the guard post in a moment."

He said. He turned and led the way. Cynder followed, with Meredy staying hidden near her legs.

She could only hope that the guards may know something.

Sure enough, they were at the guard post within a few minutes, the dragon couple having flown over there with the hatchling in tow.

The building itself was large and shaped like most of the other buildings in the city.

Spyro led them inside, while Cynder carried the hatchling in her jaw.

The hallways of the building were non-descript stone as well. Meredy watched as they passed by many armored dragons, of different colors and sizes. Some shot her curious glances and she froze in fear at them. But being carried by the scruff, she could not hide very well.

Finally, the couple had made it to the office of what most have been an important dragon. The office was, well, large, and had a big wood desk in it, along with a few banners and shelves. The banners had different symbols that Meredy did not know.

At the desk, was a large light blue dragon. He greeted the pair, and Meredy was set down on the desk.

"Spyro, Cynder, good to see you two." The blue dragon spoke.

Cynder nodded and Spyro addressed him too. "Good to see you too, Skadin. I was hoping you could help us with something." He said, gesturing to the child.

She shrank under his gaze, and curled in on herself, putting her tail over her muzzle. "H-hi."

Skadin gave a warm smile. 'Hello there, little one." He said, reaching down to give her a light nuzzle with his snout. "It's ok, I won't hurt ya." He said, in a friendly tone.

"I found her lost out in the woods nearby. We were hoping you could help us locate her mother." Cynder explained

Skadin nodded. 'Ok, any kind of description or name you can provide."
Noting the hatchling to be shy, Cynder answered for her.

"She said her name is Lilith. This hatchling is named Meredy. Apparently, her mother has similar scale colors to Meredy." She noted.

Skadin looked over the hatchling and nodded. "Ok, give me one moment." He said.

The dragons sat in late, as Skadin pulled out a list of scrolls from a nearby shelf, and looked them over. After a good several minutes, he sighed and sat it down.

"Well, I just looked through our citizen registry and reports I had on hand, but I don't see any dragon named 'Lilith' in our records. I will have the scribe run through the larger city archives later, but as far as I know, we don't have reports of a dragon like that." he said. He shot a glance at the hatchling.

"Come to think of it, I don't know of any kind of dragon of that scale color. Why, Cynder is the only black dragon in Warfang I can think of…" he noted.

Meredy frowned. But what else should she have expected? She was a human, not a dragon. But she did not know if she should tell them that.

Cynder looked at the hatchling. "Dear, I know I asked earlier, but do you remember… anything before you woke up out there? Maybe how you could have ended up like that? Or what you and your mother were doing?" She pressed.

Meredy thought. In truth, the last few things remembered were earlier morning, being awoken in her house by her mother. She remembered being carried out of the house and then…

Nothing. It just all went white.

"I don't know." She said sadly.

The adults frowned. Skadin hummed.

"Well, until we figure that out, we need to figure out what to do with this poor girl." He noted. "If she had no one to stay with, the orphanage or temple nursery could hold her. She is far too young to be out on her own." He noted.

Meredy frowned. She disliked the thought of being put in some random orphanage. The nursery sounded a bit more appealing, but she didn't really like either. She wanted her home, not this.

She pouted and looked down on the desk.

Skadin noted this.

"Sorry, little one. Buts it's only temporary. And hey, are caretakers are very kind. They will take care of you." Skadin tried.

Cynder, however, seemed to take note of the hatchlings' saddened reaction. She and Spyro shared a glance.

"Actually… about that. Could you give Spyro and I just a minute or so to speak?"

Skadin raised a brow and nodded.

Both the purple dragon and the dragoness walked out of the room, leaving Meredy alone with Skadin.

Skadin looked her over again. "My dear, you seem a bit bruised up. Maybe some healing crystals might help?" He said, in a calm tone.

Meredy looked up at him, still a bit nervous. Sure, she did suffer a few bruises, but what was a healing crystal?

"What are those?"

Skadin raised a brow. He reached into his desk and pulled out what looked like a red crystal. He held it in his paw towards her.

"This is one. It a magic crystal that heals physical wounds on dragons. Just apply it to your body and it does the rest." he noted.

Meredy looked baffled. Magic crystals that healed wounds? What is this?

Skadin sighed. "Here, let me show you how it works." He said. Holding a paw out for trust, Meredy tilted her head a bit confused, but got that he was asking for trust and put her paw on to his. He then lowered it, and she let him apply the crystal to her body, which was absorbed before her very eyes. Any bruises she had vanished.

She stared in awe "Woah!" She said.

Skadin noted her baffled reaction and smiled. He did not comment further, however.

Soon enough, the other dragons opened the door and were coming back in.
"Awe, welcome back. Little Meredy here was just learning about healing crystals. I patched up her bruises." He noted.

Cynder and Spyro nodded.

"Thanks you for that." Spyro said. "We appreciate that."

Skadin hummed. "She did not seem to know about the crystal though..."

Cynder raised and brow but said nothing else. Meredy barely paid any heed to the comment.

Cynder looked down at the hatchling, with an inquisitive look.

"Sweetie, how would you feel about staying with us? I know we just met but I promise we would take care while they try to- until they do find your mother. How does that sound?"

Meredy considered her options. Be put in the care of some random nursery or be with the one dragon she felt she fully trusted right now.

She did not need long to have her answer.

"That sounds good, thank you." She said. Cynder smiled and nuzzled her.

Spyro nodded, and turned to Skadin. "Is there anything else you need from us in that regard then, Captain Skadin?" He asked.

Skadin shook his head. 'No, you should be good. I will note it in my report, and inform the necessary officials. Just keep in touch with me if she recalls anything else that might help our search. Oh, and have a word with some of the caretakers in the main temple if you need anything. My mate there could be of service." he noted.

Spyro nodded. He then turned to Meredy. "Well, guess it is settled then." He said. Cydner nodded and picked up the hatchling.

"We will see ourselves out then. Thank you, Skadin." he noted.

Skadin nodded and let them be on the way out.

The flight to their house only took another few minutes. The city was beginning to calm down; the streets less crowded and the lights from crystal fixtures began to turn on.

When they landed, they landed in front of a rather large house, that looked like the other buildings, but had more ordinate stone on the front.

Spyro let them in through a front door, which was made of some kind of wood, large enough to fit an adult dragon.

When they got in the house, Meredy was still being carried by the scruff, the hatchling's eyes lit up in awe.

The house was huge! It was made up of lavish stone and marble. The walls and floor were a light stone, but marble pillars adorned the periphery and center of the rooms. Various decorations, including elemental banners and the like, were hung on the walls. Adding to this, there were various crystal light fixtures on the wall, like the lights Meredy had at home. Some paintings of Spyro and Cynder were also present. It seemed rather lavish.

Meredy stared in awe.

"It's huge!"

Cynder blushed. "It's a little… much did our tastes, but the city would not give us anything less after what we saved the world." She said sheepishly.
Meredy did a double take. "Saved the world?" Dragons could be heroes?

Spyro raised a brow. "Um, I don't mean to brag or anything, but I thought it was common history to teach hatchlings what we did. Stopping the dark master and, well…." he trailed off, being met with a slight eye roll by his mate.

"It's fine you don't know. I don't mean to flaunt it or anything. Besides, you are still very young after all." he said sheepishly.

Meredy's stomach growled. She smiled sheepishly. She had not eaten all day.

"Guess someone's hungry," Spyro said with a laugh.

"Can you feed her? I am going to prepare her room for the night." He said.

Cynder nodded, and he walked off into another part of the house.

Cynder carried Meredy to the kitchen, which was also stone with carved walls but had a stone table, sized to accommodate dragons. Meredy was sat on the table, as she was too small to reach the top on her own.

Cynder went to a nearby storage cabinet, grabbed and set out a plate, and grabbed some food from the pantry. The 'pantry' was actually a small stone bin, carved into the walls.

Raw fish was what she offered. Meredy glanced at it and went back to the dragoness. She felt weird. The thought of eating raw meat would normally be repulsive to her. Yet, for some reason, it seemed… enticing. Like there was some instinct telling her to scarf it down.

"Well, it's not much but…"

She was interrupted by Meredy chomping down on the fish. The little girl did not even realize how hungry she was. To her own surprise, she did not mind the raw meat. Almost like it was on instinct that she liked it that way. Being a dragon was weird.

Cynder gave a slight laugh as the child finished the fish. "Hungry little thing, weren't you?" She asked, in jest.

Meredy nodded.

No sooner had she finished the fish, however, she felt a feeling of drowsiness overcome here. The day had been taxing on her little body, and she was just now realizing it. She drooped her body on the table, and yawned. Eating food made her tired anyways, her weariness from the day only made the feeling worse.

Cynder laughed. "Someone seems tired." The dragoness laughed.

Meredy would normally argue, but she frankly did not even have it in her. "Yeah…"

"Ready for bed already then, little one?" She asked, in an almost motherly tone.

Meredy muttered another "yes".

Cynder grasped her by the scruff again and began walking elsewhere in the house.

Only a few moments later, Cynder and Spyro had taken the hatchling to a guest room they had. Spyro had been preparing the room for the hatchling. The room itself was also stone but had some nice black carpet. In the center, was a large, what Meredy would describe as, a pillow. It was like a large cot made of soft fabrics, with a red cover on top. She sat down on it, and the moment she was, a feeling of comfort overtook her weary body.

Instinctively, she made what she could describe as a soft purring sound.

Spyro laughed. "Someone seems happy." He said.

Meredy nodded.

"Let us know if you need anything, dear. We are in the next room, just a bit down the hall." she said.

"Ok. Thank you for…helping me and everything." Meredy said.

Cynder nodded as she turned with Spyro to leave. "Of course, dear. Good night."

'Night night." Meredy said.

With that, she was left alone for a bit.

Finally, she had a few moments to herself to think, when she was not in any mortal danger or busy.

The realization of everything that was going on hit her like a truck.

She somehow woke up in some weird new world, in the body of a dragon hatchling, nearly got eaten by some wolf thing, then was saved by a dragon.

A freaking dragon. Something that is not supposed to exist. Something that was supposed to be evil. And yet, they were helping her; even going as far as to let her into their house and give her a bed to sleep in. In any other occasion, she would never have trusted a stranger.

Just what was this?

At least she had been lucky enough to end up in the care of a rather compassionate couple. She could not believe they would just let her into their house like that. Come to think of it, who knew dragons would even have houses?

And yet, something still bothered her, above all the questions she had about her situation.

How was her mother? Did she know she was alive? What was she doing right now?

The hatchling did not know. And she was too tired to think about it.

Yawning one more time, she gave out and fell asleep.

The two adult dragons stood out in the hallway. After ensuring she was asleep, Cynder looked at her mate. They were a bit further down the hall, so as not to wake Meredy a

"I don't know Spyro… something's a bit off about her." The dragoness stated.

Spyro raised a brow. "What do you mean? I mean, she seems a bit nervous but…"

Cynder nodded. "Yes, very nervous. She's afraid of just about everything. Even other dragons…"

Spyro frowned. "She is just a hatchling. But, even so, you have a point. I've never seen a hatchling as frightful as her."

Cynder hummed. "There's more though. She seems afraid of dragons in general, like she forgets she is one. Hell, she seems to lack basic knowledge about our species and our society. Even basic facts hatchlings her age would typically know, like healing crystals. Heck, she seems to have trouble just walking, she stumbles over herself and seems a bit unstable when just moving around." Cynder noted. "I saw her stumbling in the forest and on our walk in the streets."

Spyro raised a brow. "Maybe she was raised in isolation? I mean, my parents were dragonflies and I barely knew anything about myself or dragons until I was twelve. Took me a while to get used to things too." He noted.

Cynder shook her head. "Maybe, but it just seems… off. And the way she seems scared of nearly everyone, even for a child her age… it worries me."

Spyro frowned. "Do you think… she might have been abused?"

Cynder sighed sadly. "Maybe. But she reacts well to affection. She trusts me and I think she will trust you. But still.. she was out there all alone. She damn near got eaten before I saved her." She noted.

Spryo looked unerved to hear this, and hummed.

"Maybe she was neglected then? Her parents clearly didn't rear her very well, with how she lacks basic knowledge. Maybe they even outright abandoned her?" Spyro suggested

Cynder nodded. "Would explain her mannerisms and why I found her out there alone." She said sadly.

She looked aside, casting a glance at the entrance to the room they had her in.

"Perhaps, yes. But she did mention a mother, though." She noted. "Maybe it was recent, and she doesn't understand?"

Cynder shrugged. " I don't know. We should see if we could learn more from here when she wakes up."

After pondering something, she turned back to Spyro.

"Did we do the right thing bringing her here, to our home? I don't know if we are the most qualified to care for her."

Spyro shrugged. "I… don't know. You're better with hatchlings than me, though." He said, with a slight chuckle. Cynder returned the smile briefly but grew serious again.

"Maybe, but that's not exactly what I meant." She began with a sigh. "I may have been a bit impulsive to bring her here…"

"But you had reason to do so, I imagine." Spyro noted.

Cynder nodded. "She seemed so lost and scared. She clung to me throughout the day like I was the only one she was remotely comfortable to be around. I was worried how she would be if we left her to the care of the city's orphanage or nursery. She's so anxious and scared." Cynder noted.

Spyro nodded in agreement." That's why I agreed to this. I felt the same way." He stated. "I think it's best that she gets more one-on one care. She clearly needs it. She is so skittish around everyone, from what you told me. I think she might be dealing with trauma from being lost; and was more or less glued to you, sense you were the first one to help her." He noted.

Cynder nodded. "Well, I will do my best. Hopefully, we can find her mother soon… assuming she's around. But, if push comes to shove... we will make it work." She glanced aside. "I am sorry if i forced this-"

"No, you didn't at all. I am in the same boat as you, Cynder. And you and I already discussed helping her. Its ok." He assured her.

Cynder nuzzled him. "Thank you, Spyro." Spyro nuzzled her back.

Afterward, she spoke again, this time with a more worried expression. "I did not want to bring this up with her around, since she seems to know little about elements and... well a lot of things in this world. She looks a lot like a shadow dragon, and I think I sensed her element earlier. The thing is... there have been few dragons of that element I have seen since the war. And to find a young hatchling of this element. The dragons I know who had corrupted themselves to get it, like I was. To think a hatchling was born with it... I don't know if she would even realize how rare this element is." She noted.

Spyro nodded solemnly. "I... don't know what to say. That's part of why I wanted to bring here, so we learn more about her." He said, trailing off.

Spyro sighed. He looked at the room door again and back to Cynder.

"Cynder… there is something else I wanted to tell you, about the girl." He said. He was met with a raised brow.

"I… sensed something about her. Something about her aura… she has a dark element but there is something more. I sensed… some kind of unique magic in her."

Cynder paled. "Unique Magic? What magic?"

Spyro hummed. "I don't know… but it seems potent… " He muttered. "Its like she has a great potential or capacity for it, beyond what I have sensed in most other dragons..." He trailed off.

Cynder frowned. "So… what's that mean then? And how is that the case?"

Spyro shook his head. "Don't know. For now, we should keep watch on her. I doubt these abilities will manifest anytime soon, since she is just a hatchling. I don't even know if she is aware of them. I think we should just let her rest tonight. Maybe we can bake more sense of things tomorrow." He said.

Cynder sighed and nodded. "Agreed."

With that, the two adults left for their own bed chambers, tired after a long day.

As they got ready to rest, Cynder could not help but wonder about the hatchling.

"Just where did you really come from, little one?"

Ok, thank you for reading this. So a few things to note, this story is kind of a test of sorts. I wanted to try my hands at the whole 'human into a dragon' story, but do it in a different way. At yes, I am aware this one is similar to Flygon's "Fate Decides" (which is probably a lot better than this story is, go read it, its a really good fic) but I was never trying to copy that. I wanted to explore what things would realistically be like for someone to randomly wake up in the Spyro universe, and doing it from the mind of a child seemed like an interesting approach.
I don't really know if or when I will update this story; as I said, its more of test in the setting, and I thought I would share this story here instead of keeping it confined to my google docs.

I have other stories I am focusing on and updating. But if this one somehow gains traction, I might look into updating it.

So anyways, let me know what you think of it, if you feel inclined to. I would love to hear some feedback about how I explored the whole 'human to dragon' thing.
