Hello all! Welcome to another distraction from my multitude of other work in progress. I've been enjoying and reading mha fanfics for a while and wanted to write a simple what if fic that focused a bit more on Izuku's life before UA.

I hope you enjoy!

Notes:

Ayane Akari – fire hand quirk

Hoshiko Hiroko – Ball of light quirk

These characters are derived from the scene where Izuku's teacher says that everyone wants to be a hero. You can find the both of them using their quirks in the scene.

Izuku Midoriya is 12: 2 years before he meets All Might for reference

Izuku Midoriya was the punchline of his class, no, of his middle school. A quirkless child who wants nothing more than to be a hero. But in a society that is quirk dominant, where being without one is abnormal, quirkless people are seen as the bottom of the barrel. It does not help when one of the school's top student and biggest bully targets you either.

Izuku flinched when he saw Katsuki Bakugo walk by. The sneer on his old friend's face made Izuku hang his head down. Staring at his notes, Izuku felt the suffocating feeling of loneliness and despair surround him. Middle school had barely started but nothing has changed since kindergarten. Always alone and the outcast thanks to Bakugo. Sometimes Izuku wondered, hoped, it would be different if he had a quirk.

A loud conversation next to him drew Izuku from his thoughts.

"Hoshiko, what am I supposed to do," his redhead classmate complained next to him. Ayane Akari, quirk fire fists. Her hands are able to turn into a flame which she has limited control over. Ayane was currently covering her face with her, normal and unlit, hands as she sat at her desk.

"I don't know Ayane. You know you shouldn't have tried using a bargain brand notebook. Not with how often you accidentally light your hands up," A short brown-haired girl said shaking her head while sitting on Ayane's desk. Hoshiko Hiroko, quirk starlight. She is able to create a ball of light that glows reminiscent of a star.

"I had no choice, there was no way I could ask mom or dad for another fire-resistant notebook. Not if they find out how I ruined the last one by dumping coffee on it. They would never let me live that down."

Hoshiko patted Ayane on the shoulder, "Sorry Ayane, with the midterm coming up tonight is really my only chance to study my notes until this weekend. I would invite you over, but I know your family wants you home."

"Right, not that I don't mind my grandparents showing up out of the blue but my parents' insistence that we're all there doesn't help. And of all subjects why did it have to be my English notes, my worst subject."

Hoshiko said nothing as she gently patted Ayane on the shoulder. Izuku focused his attention back on his notebook. It was his own English notebook, one of the few subjects Izuku felt confident about. Spending a lot of time online browsing through articles and watching documentaries about superheroes in English helped a lot with his understanding of the language. It would be the one subject Izuku felt he could miss a night of review and it sounded like tonight was Ayane's only chance to get in a good review session before the weekend. Considering they have another English class in two days time and then the exams next week Izuku remembered the stress and distraught look of his classmate.

Without a word, Izuku stood up on shaky legs. His hands quivered a little as he gathered all of his belongings together. Only his English notes stayed out on the desk. Izuku gulped once more before he picked up the notebook and walked over to his classmates.

They didn't even seem to notice him until he cleared his throat. Hoshiko's and Ayane's heads snapped towards his direction causing Izuku to flinch. Hoshika looked at him with a face full of disdain while Ayane's teary-eyed face of disappointment made Izuku internally wince.

Izuku did not let that stop him as he cleared his throat again.

"I-I-I'm sorry to bo-bother you, Akari-san, Hiroko-san. I-I overheard you need English notes to-to study and I-I-I thought I offer you mine." Izuku bowed low, his torso nearly horizontal to the ground as he held out his textbook to Ayane. While Izuku's wide eyes and pale face stared at the ground, he never saw the wide eyes of Hoshika and Ayane.

"I, er, that… that is very kind of you, er, Deku but won't you need it for your own study?" Ayane said.

"Please do not worry, I already did some review over it earlier this week. I will be alright missing it a night or two," Izuku said in a firmer voice still unable to look at them.

Ayane gently took the notebook from Izuku's slightly shaking hands. Izuku snapped upwards standing stiff like a soldier. He gave the two a quick nod and bolted from the room. Ayane and Hoshika could only blink at their classmate's behavior. They shared a shrug as they turned their attention towards the notebook.

Opening it, Ayane let out a small smile not seeing any sign of a phone number or a dumb pick-up line that she expected to get from some of her other classmates.

"Whoa, those are some detailed notes. I think those are better than anything I've ever taken." Hoshika looked at the pages with wide eyes.

"I think I'd get a good review from just copying this," Ayane muttered. She snapped the book shut and stuffed it into her bag, careful not to ruin it. "I'm not going to waste this goldmine. I talk to you later Hoshika."

"Share your copy with me when we meet up this weekend, yeah?" Hoshika called out receiving a thumbs up as her friend ran out of the school.

The next morning, Izuku simply sat down at his desk. He noticed Ayane had arrived early and was busy reviewing something. Izuku's eyes widen as he felt a book inside his desk. Pulling it out he saw that it was his notebook. Izuku absently flipped through the book until he came to the last page. On a sticky note was a short note saying 'Thank You : )'." Izuku briefly glanced at Ayane who gave him a small smile before returning to her notes. Izuku went red at the thought of a girl smiling at him.

That thought quickly left when Bakugo slammed the door open to the room and took a seat at his desk. Izuku did not miss the glare Katsuki gave him. Any thoughts besides school and being a hero left him as he focused on his notebooks again.

A deep sigh escaped from Izuku as he stood by his locker. The exams had just finished and Izuku could not be happier about it. A smile crossed Izuku's face when he picked up his latest Hero Analysis journal, Vol 11. Flipping through the pages, Izuku made mental notes of the sketches that needed to be redone or notes that needed to be updated.

Izuku almost literally jumped out of his skin when he felt someone tap his shoulder. Shakily turning around he found Ayane looking at him with an apologetic but amused smile.

"Hey Midoriya-san, I wanted to thank you for your notes. They ended up helping me and Hoshika a whole lot with our review," Ayane said bowing her head.

Izuku gave a nervous chuckle as he rubbed the back of his head.

"Th-think n-n-nothing of it Akari-san. I-I'm happy to have helped," Izuku said smiling.

Ayane returned it with a smile. Izuku watched as she took a few steps away before turning around. Instead of her carefree smile from before Ayane now wore a serious yet gentle smile.

"Midoriya-san, I know it's your dream to become a Pro Hero. I… I don't know if you could," Izuku felt his confidence shatter at Ayane's words until she continued, "but I want you to know that this week, you were my hero. So, thank you, Midoriya-san."

With that Ayane turned around and speed-walked out of the school. Izuku could only stare at her retreating form in shock, awe, and gratefulness. He was somebody's hero. He a quirkless boy became somebody's hero. That alien thought bounced around in Izuku's head until he felt an epiphany. Izuku could become a hero, he did not need some powerful quirk, he did not need to save the world and stop villains. He just wanted to be able to help people who needed it. Izuku smiled down at his notebook, he still wanted to be a Pro Hero, to be able to save people with a smile, but maybe, maybe there was something else Izuku could focus on. To try to help out the people around him with small acts of kindness. To be the Everyday Hero.
