Prologue
At the age of 4, Izuku Midoriya would quickly realize that all men were not created equal. Ever since the day his mother put on the video debut of All Might, he would always rewatch it whenever he felt down. Seeing All Might save those people from the disaster with a smile struck a massive cord with Izuku. He also wanted to save people with a smile, however fate wouldn't be so kind to the little boy. On the day he was supposed to go to the quirk doctor to learn his quirk, fate decided to test him. He failed that test with flying colors...
"Sorry, but your son is quirkless" said the doctor.
"How is this possible?!" asked Inko.
"You see the prevailing method of determining if your son has a quirk is by looking for the presence of an extra joint in the pinky toe. Humans have no need for the parts they don't use, and those without the joint represent the next stage in evolution. Your son has two joints, so as rare as it is nowadays, he possesses no quirk at all." stated the doctor.
Izuku felt his world shatter into little pieces. He imagined himself standing proud beside All Might and Katsuki as pro heroes, and now that dream was ruined. He didn't know why this had to happen to him of all people.
'why, Why, WHY!' was all Izuku could think in his mind, his mom looked at him with a worried expression. She knew how he was already worried about the fact he hadn't shown any sign of a quirk but he always hoped for it to appear. She knew the importance this day was planned to be for him and to hear that he got nothing, broke him.
[Later that night. At the Midoriya Residence, Izuku's Room, 8:00 pm]
"No matter what kind of trouble you're in he'll save you with a smile..." Izuku said sniffling.
'Oh Izuku...' Inko frowns. 'I don't know what to do! If I could give him my quirk I would but it's just not possible. If only Hisashi was here, he would have Izuku smiling by now. Whenever he is with his father, he is always so ecstatic and whenever he is sad, Hisashi would just do fire tricks which would help lighten up the mood plus his little quotes of wisdom he gives Izuku. What can I do to help him?'
"Mom... can I be a hero without.. a quirk? said Izuku now crying profusely. The corners of his mouth wobbly point up, trying his best to smile. At this moment, Inko starts to tear up and runs towards Izuku hugging him tightly.
"Of course Izuku! You'll be the best hero in the world, I just know it. I know it will be difficult being quirkless and that people may act mean as well as say mean things to you but remember that me and your father are here for you ok?" Inko said, wiping away her tears, she slowly started to wipe Izuku tears, hoping her words had any effect at consoling the boy.
"Yeah, I'll be the bestest hero in the world! Even All Might will know how great I am even if I lack a quirk, I won't give up I promise mom" Izuku now wearing a genuine smile on his face as he stared at his mother. She knew how dangerous the profession was and wanted to stop him from doing it but after today, she promised herself to never crush his dreams. Afterall the doctor had already dealt a major enough blow to it already, noticing that the All Might video was still playing, Inko goes towards the computer and shuts it off.
"Now Izuku, how about I make you some katsudon okay?" Inko asked Izuku the question hoping to move the topic away from quirks for a while. Izuku immediately gets up from his chair and runs down the stairs jumping up and down excitedly waiting for his favorite meal.
Calm down Izuku, it's not going to magically appear without me down there!" she chuckled as she went downstairs. She somehow managed to help remedy the situation before it spiraled into an irreparable mess. Feeling proud of herself, they enjoyed some phenomenal katsudon before she helped tuck him in for the night.
"Mom, thank you for believing in me, I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't become a hero. I won't let anything anyone says stop me from being a hero, I promise." Izuku said with the biggest grin the four year old could muster.
"I'm glad that you're feeling better, Izuku. Now, if other kids start giving you trouble, you tell me okay? I don't want to find out you were getting hurt or bullied and that you didn't tell me" Inko said with a stern look.
"I promise mom!" Izuku exclaimed before his eyelids closed and he fell asleep. Inko walked out of the room leaving him be. After entering the living room, she then decided it was best to inform the rest of her family and best friend about the news. Starting with her husband, Hisashi nearly bought the first ticket home that he could get, so he could get out of America to cheer up his little hero. Inko had to spend 20 minutes calming him down and reassuring him that Izuku was feeling better after their chat. After reassuring him that everything was fine, he stated that he would do his best to be home for the holidays. After that she called her best friend Mitsuki Bakugo, who complained that it was too late to be calling in the middle of the night.
"Mitsuki, this is serious. Izuku...he's quirkless" waiting for her best friend to respond as she paced around the living room.
"WHAT! Inko, how's the little brat holding up? I can come over tomorrow if you want. He is practically my little nephew, it'd be a shame to see him all mopey over something he can't control, meanwhile my brat gets to create damn firework shows from the palm of his hands" said Mitsuki in an uncharacteristic panicked tone.
"Really it's fine, Mitsuki. I was able to help him get over it and now I think he's even more determined to be a hero. I don't know if it was the right choice though" said Inko with a slight frown.
"Look, the brat wants to be a hero more than anything right?" asked Mitsuki.
"Yes, I know but-" Inko started to speak but was cut off.
"Then, you did the right thing. Look, lord knows me supporting Katsuki's dream is a big mistake for the future of society but you gotta understand that to these boys, at this age, being a hero means the world to them. So, yes I would say you did a damn good choice in supporting the brats dream" said Mitsuki.
"Thanks Mitsuki, I really needed to hear that," Inko said, relaxing abit.
"Anytime Inko, welp i'm tired. We can talk tomorrow if you need to but right now I've gotta go." said Mitsuki yawning.
"Of course, sorry for interrupting your beauty sleep" chuckled Inko on the other side of the phone. She hung up and then dialed the last person she needed to chat with.
[At the Higashikata Residence, 12:00 am]
Tomoko was opening the fridge looking for some milk to drink before going to sleep. She hears Josuke yelling something about an arrow on the phone with his friends, Koichi & Okuyasu. The home phone starts ringing and she groans wondering if it's another damn scam call, she had just about had it with those annoying callers. She picks up the phone and answers in the most threatening voice she could muster.
"Hello, I swear to god if this is another scam caller, I'm going to find your house and I'm gonna-" She was abruptly cut off by the sound of her little cousin's voice. It had been quite awhile since they last talked so she was a little happy to hear from her. While they did chat at her fathers funeral, she still was glad to hear from her.
"Tomoko, is that you? I know it's been awhile! How's Josuke doing?" Inko asked cheerfully
"Ah Inko! That delinquent of a son of mine is doing just fine, ignoring how he keeps talking about some mysterious arrow that he and his friends are trying to find. So, why are you calling me now? Must be pretty important, I mean I was just going to be-" she was cut off by the sound of sobbing and waterworks, a common action of her cousin.
"Oh Tomoko, Izuku is quirkless! I know that in Morioh, everyone's mostly quirkless or have very weak quirks but over here a majority of people have quirks. Izuku wanted to be a hero so bad and I just-" Tomoko was trying to comprehend all the word vomit that was being said to her. Sure being quirkless sucked but as she said pretty much everyone in Morioh except a few people excluding Inko, had quirks. They knew what it was like outside of Morioh but still it was weird to be seen as an oddity in the world.
"Look Inko, it's not the worst thing that could happen and if it ever becomes too much you know he's welcome here in Morioh." Tomoko tried her best to be reassuring although she was a little tired after coming home from work to deal with getting her son to get off his games. Josuke would always find a way to piss her off but she still loved the little menace.
"Oh I know and thank you for that. No, what I was calling was to ask for a second opinion, you see Izuku asked me if he could become a hero and I told him yes. I just hope I didn't make a mistake" Inko said worriedly.
"Ohh, well if that's the case don't worry. You did the right thing. Last thing we want is for him to go from being a bundle of sunshine to a mopey delinquent." Tomoko replied sarcastically.
Just then, Josuke walks into the kitchen looking for a midnight snack, his mom chastises him for being awake due to him having school tomorrow. He quickly tells his aunty hello then sprints off to his room to stop his mom from further yelling.
"SEE WHAT I MEAN INKO! What a delinquent, god I wish we could swap children geez." Tomoko was far too tired to continue yelling.
"Yes, I understand. Well that was it, good night Tomoko" Inko said chuckling.
"Yeah yeah, see ya Inko" as she hangs up, she closes the lights and goes to bed.
