I want you, but not like this
by Hanikka
Summary:
Imprinting among La Push shapeshifters is considered a blessing, a gift from Gods, a way to find your perfect match who, the old farts quoting the Spirits say, is your soul mate. But Paul Lahote doesn't believe in that bullshit. He's not going to imprint, or if he won't accept it. It's the man that says who he wants, not the animal.
Rating M, AU.

Chapter 1
Life was different these days for the La Push resident bad boy Paul Lahote. It was Sunday morning, and instead of finding himself in the bed of some random bitch, he was sitting in his car outside his girlfriend's house with her twin brothers, waiting for her to hurry up. Yeah, you read right; his girlfriend.
"Are you ready Ang?" Paul shouted. "Isaac and Joshua are driving me mad here."
"Yes, Paul, coming!"
Sometimes Paul thought, what the hell had happened? How the fuck was he heading to the playground with two six-year-old boys and their sister on a Sunday morning and of his own free will? But Paul would be lying if he said he didn't enjoy the change his life had taken. He did, but it didn't make it less weird.
Angela came running from the house and hopped into the truck. Boys were sitting in the back seat on their booster seats, arguing about who could use their new scooter first. Why the hell they didn't have their own scooters, Paul couldn't understand. Quite many arguments could be avoided if they had their own damn stuff. But no, Reverend Weber wanted his kids to learn to share, and that is how they did it: fought all the damn time. But most of the time, the Reverend himself wasn't there to listen to them arguing over stupid things. Lucky bastard. He would probably bend his mighty high rule if he were the one hearing the shouting.
Angela moved closer to Paul and took his other hand.
"Are you taking me to lunch later today?" she asked.
"Aren't we having lunch with your parents?" Paul asked, feeling oddly disappointed. Yeah, he was disappointed not to have Sunday family lunch with his girlfriend's parents. Damn, he hardly recognized his life anymore.
"No. Didn't I tell you that they are going to visit one of dad's colleagues and have lunch with them? They are taking the boys with them. You know what that means?" Angela lowered her voice, "you could take me home with you."
Paul had to suppress a laugh. It was hilarious when Angela tried to be sexy and seductive; if anything, his girlfriend was a prude. But he was on a mission to coax Angela out from her shell and make her beast in bed. Occasionally, Paul thought he had taken on too big of a challenge; they'd been dating for around eight months, and she was still struggling to have sex while lights were on or in a room with curtains open. Why did he put up with such inexperience from a woman who usually loved his women feisty and willing for hardcore fucking. Well, it was as he said; he was on a mission, and if anything, Paul wasn't a person who gave up too quickly.
"I might do just that," he replied, feeling up for some teasing whispered, "and take you to bed and have you as my lunch. Spread you open .. hmm...delicious."
Angela swatted his arm, and her face turned red as a tomato.
And Paul laughed.
Hopeless? Probably, but no, Paul wasn't going to give up. He had never been with anybody so innocent, and something was alluring about that.
Someone might ask how he had been able to bed the daughter of a local Reverend, but it hadn't taken much sweet talk; on the contrary, the girl had been remarkably eager to jump his bones and lose her virginity, and who was he to say no? She was an adult, after all.
"Are we there yet!?" Isaac shouted.
"Yes, Sweet pea, we're almost there," Angela answered her brother, glancing at the back seat with a wide smile.
"Cool!" Isaac hollered. "I'm taking the scooter first!" he informed his brother. "No, I'm taking it," Joshua shouted back. "No, I am!" Isaac shouted, slapping his brother.
"Boys! Stop it!" It was Angela's turn to shout.
Paul had had enough of shouting. "Hey, I want to wrestle with you guys. So when Isaac is riding the scooter, Joshua, you can show me the best you got. And then you swap, okay?"
"I want to wrestle first!" shouted Isaac. "No, I want!" Joshua piped.
"Damn, you two are annoying," Paul chuckled, shaking his head.
But he didn't mind, not really. Paul had never had siblings of his own or a family that mattered. His parents were abusive drunks and were no longer present in his life. Thank fuck for that. His mother had died of liver failure a decade ago, and his father had moved out of the rez. Paul didn't know where he was and didn't give a damn about his whereabouts.
"Hey, guys, what do you say," Angela tried to get her brothers to shut up, "if you play nicely, we can take you to have ice cream after?" Angela offered.
"YAY!" both shouted. "I want vanilla and pear!" "Chocolate. I want chocolate." Hell, they just didn't shut up.
They arrived at the park, and as soon they were out of the car, both boys jumped on him, and the scooter forgot.
Angela giggled and went to sit on the bench.
Paul scooped the boys under each arm, ran to the grass, and fell to the ground. The boys were screaming in delight, which hurt his sensitive wolf ears, but he didn't ask them to turn it down. Paul loved to see them happy and enjoying themselves. He wanted to give them what he never had as a kid; a fun time with an adult who cared about them. For the first time in his life, Paul knew he might want to have kids someday.
So yeah, Paul loved spending time with the boys. He could forget all the shit while playing with them.
Angela and her parents knew about his past and what kind of people his parents had been. It was fucking embarrassing. He had wanted to sink to the ground when Angela's father had told him how Paul's mother had come to him and asked for help when Paul was only three or four years old. Paul's father had kicked her out and kept Paul with him.
Paul grimaced every time he thought about it. Why the fuck does he have to tell him that? He much rather didn't know about any of that shit. Wasn't it supposed to be under confidentiality? Hadn't it been a confession or some shit? But he couldn't hold it against Reverend Weber. He was nice and treated him like he was part of their family. For the first time, Paul felt he had a family.
Finally, the boys got bored wrestling with Paul, and they ran to the scooter. Paul left Angela to deal with the fighting and went to sit on the bench, enjoying the rare sunshine.
Boys started to fight over who could ride it first. Paul would buy them another scooter. It was bullshit to make them fight over something so trivial. Of course, they both wanted to ride scooters. It was what the little shits like them were supposed to do; drive around and see who was the fastest.
Looking at Angela and her brothers, Paul was thinking, was he in this for a long haul? He didn't know. Angela wasn't his imprint, but that hardly mattered since he wasn't going to imprint, no matter what Sam thought. Sam was always bitching about how it would only be a matter of time. Paul hated the mind fuck, and if he imprinted, he would never give into that bullshit.
So, he would be with Angela now and see where it took him. He had never dated before and enjoyed the stability of having the same woman, albeit a bit timid. It was a fresh breath of air from the skanks he usually fucked. Oh, it wasn't fucking with Angela either. They had sex. Angela talked about making love, but that was one step too far even for this new shiny dating girl, kind of Paul; Paul Lahote didn't make love. But if Angela wanted to think they were making love, she was all free to do so.
Angela came to sit by him and took his hand. "You know Paul," she started looking at him shyly, "I want to tell you something," she seemed very nervous, and it made Paul damn nervous. Please fucking, God, don't let her be pregnant. She can't be pregnant. They used double protection every fucking time. Fuck he couldn't deal with her being pregnant. He might have been thinking about being a dad just a minute ago, but it was someday, not now. Don't be pregnant.
"I think I love you," Angela whispered, and her face turned scarlet.
Paul let out a breath he'd been holding and smiled. Feeling relieved, he didn't think much about what to say and said, "Me too."
Angela shrieked and wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him quickly. "I'm so happy, Paul!"
Damn. Paul felt he had just told a lie.
"Boys! Let's go to have some ice cream!" Angela shouted, and both boys yelled in excitement and ran towards Paul's truck.
"Collect your scooter!" Angela shouted, and Joshua turned back to get it.
Paul was still slightly uncomfortable with what Angela had said, and he replied. He liked her, and he enjoyed these moments together with the boys. But did he love her? Of course, he wasn't sure if he even knew what it felt like to love someone. Ever since his mother died, he hadn't loved anybody, and his feelings toward his mother had been strained during the last years of her life.
But the boys' joyful laughter and singing pulled Paul from his dark musings, and he found himself laughing at something Isaac said.
They arrived at the coffee shop. The boys ran inside, and Angela tried to keep up with her little brothers. Paul followed them, and the most delicious smell wafted into his nostrils when he stepped inside the cafe. What the fuck was that scent? Were they making something new here? It was a mouthwatering combination of vanilla and something flowery but with a little edge of spice. Paul's mouth was salivating.
"I want vanilla and pear!" shouted Isaac. "Me chocolate," Joshua added.
The shouting made Paul wince. His senses were all over the place. His wolf was alert like he'd sensed something that would be of great interest to him. But there were no leeches anywhere. Why was he so hyper? Was he trying to tell him something?
"Paul?"
"Hmm?" he asked, not having heard a word Angela had said.
"What flavor do you want?"
"I'm good, don't feel like having any, thanks," he said. His head turned around when he heard the most alluring noise in his life, a woman's soft laugh. It belonged to a young brunette who sat by the window with a dark-skinned man. She had long wavy hair and fair creamy skin. Paul couldn't see her face because her hair was falling over her shoulders, covering her features. She laughed again, and that sound went straight to his cock, stirring it to attention.
What the fuck was this all about? Paul adjusted his pulsing dick and almost moaned when the fabric rubbed it.
"Paul, come," Angela tugged at his arm and took his hand, leading them to sit on the other side of the cafe. Paul followed and fought the urge to turn around and a need to go to the girl, whose voice was like a siren's call to him. She was now whispering something to the man sitting by her. He didn't hear the words, but her velvety voice made him fucking shiver.
"Paul, what an earth has gotten into you?" Angela's voice dragged him out of whatever the fuck it was.
"Sorry, what did you say?" tearing his eyes off the girl.
Angela leaned to kiss him lightly on the lips and giggled. "I was asking where you want to go to have lunch later?"
"Um.. I don't mind, whatever you want."
"Paul, you are usually so picky about where you want to eat. What's this, huh?" Angela chuckled and elbowed his side. Paul felt irritated by her, and he couldn't understand what the fuck was the matter with him. He didn't want Angela to touch him. He turned to stare at the girl.
The boys ate their ice creams, and Paul's whole body was humming. What shit is this?
He fought to keep his eyes off the girl that had spiked his interest but found it almost impossible. Then the man cupped his hands around her face and kissed her. Paul kept himself on his chair by grabbing the edges. Fuck, how he wanted to rip the head off the fucker.
Fuck! Paul physically shook his head, trying to get rid of these irrational but the most potent emotions he'd ever experienced in his life.
"Paul, what the heck is the matter with you?"
Paul ripped his eyes off the man and turned to look at Angela, who looked annoyed.
Paul cleared his throat, not entirely trusting his voice. "Well, it's not like we had a lot of choices here. I could make us something."
"I would like that," Angela said, the smile returning to her face, and then she gasped, "Oh my God, Bella. It's Bella and Tyler." Angela got up and shrieked, "Bella!" and it was then when the girl whose voice had made him hard turned to look at Angela, and a bright smile spread on her face. Paul gasped; she was the most beautiful woman Paul had ever seen.
"Angela!" she shouted back and then turned to look at him, and his world stopped spinning; he was looking into the beautiful eyes of his imprint.
AN:
And here I go again: I started a new story. I said I wouldn't, but... I've spent quite a lot of time reading wolf fics last two years, and I'm craving certain types of stories that just aren't there, or I can't find them, so I have to write one myself. This one popped into my head when I read a wonderful story called In Omne Tempus by La Vita Nuova. It's a Bella/Jared story.
Be warned, though: You are taking a risk starting to read this. I've written eight chapters so far (which are far from ready to be published), and even though I know where I want this story to go, I'm not yet sure if it ever gets there. I intended to write it so it would be almost ready before I start publishing, but I've noticed that writing is more fun when I get input from you, my dear readers. So if you are interested in getting on board with this story, let me know what you think and if it is worth reading.
I'm asking forgiveness from those waiting for updates to my two AH stories. I won't abandon them, but this one needed to get out first. My mind is a very fickle place at best of times, and try as I might, I couldn't get myself to continue those two when thinking about this one. I have nice chapters waiting for There is something about Bella, but need more chapters before I can publish them. So you need to be patient with me.
Let me know what you think. Do you want to read more?
