In her mind, there were just two options, either she stayed in Abnegation or she defected to Dauntless. Erudites had taken an interest in her when they realized that she had the highest marks in school, but she had just told anyone who asked her that she was not going there.
The day before her aptitude test, her mother had taken her for a walk. Beatrice had been surprised that her mother had wanted to spend time alone with her, but she had been happy regardless.
Natalie had walked a reasonable distance from their sector, and then she had stopped and looked around. When she was sure that no one was there, she turned to her daughter and said, "Beatrice, we need to talk. You are smart like an Erudite, very generous like everyone from Abnegation, but you crave the freedom Dauntless could give you."
Beatrice nodded; she already knew that it was difficult to choose a faction, because she could fit well in more than one.
pHer mother sighed. "Do you know about Divergents? People that don't conform?" Beatrice nodded. "I'm afraid that you are one of them. Nothing can be done about it, but if you want to join a faction and pass undetected, you need help. My help. I am divergent too, and although it's dangerous for me to disclose this information, I think you are too. Tomorrow your test might come back inconclusive, and we can't risk Jeanine finding out about you."
Beatrice was shocked, all her life she had waited for the aptitude test to be able to know for sure where she belonged, and now her mother was telling her that she didn't belong anywhere. There was still a chance that she wasn't divergent, but she knew deep down that she was. "What can I do to pass the test?"
Natalie smiled. "You need to choose which faction you want to join, and tomorrow during the test you need to pick the option that for you looks like it. Don't hesitate, whatever you find you need to act like an Abnegation, or an Erudite or a Dauntless. Kind, smart or brave."
Beatrice nodded. "But what will happen when I get to the faction of my choice? What if I get there and there are more tests?" She said worriedly.
"Are you going for Dauntless?" Natalie asked.
She wanted to deny it, she wanted so much to tell her mother that she was staying in Abnegation, but she knew the truth in her heart. "Yes, I want to go to Dauntless."
Natalie smiled sadly. "Then I will give you the name of my contact there, he knows how to pass every test undetected. I have to warn you, he works for Jeanine. It's the only way we can stay ahead of her, he will behave like a ruthless soldier, but he's on our side. One of the bravest, he has to walk a fine line, and sometimes he has to make difficult decisions. His name is Eric, I'll let him know that you will be there after the choosing ceremony. You'll have to wait for him to contact you, it's important Beatrice."
"I'll wait for him, mom. Don't worry. I won't do anything to betray your trust." She promised. She wondered about this man, who was risking his life for divergents. She was curious about his story, but she knew she couldn't ask her mother about it.
…..
The following day Beatrice approached the room where she was going to take the test with apprehension, she prayed to pass it undetected. She took a deep breath; she needed to be brave like a Dauntless.
She went through the test thinking of bravery and freedom, and she passed it. But the truth was that she had been aware during the test, and that was a sign of divergence.
The previous day, her mother had explained a lot about divergents, and now she was even more scared than before. Because a war was coming and Jeanine would stop at nothing to capture, torture and kill everyone that didn't conform./p
Beatrice had made up her mind, and she had decided to go to Dauntless to train, and then protect people like her and her mother.
Was Eric, the informer, divergent too? There were a lot of questions, and very few answers, but eventually she was going to find everything out.
