Chapter 1—Meeting the Extended Lebrie Family

August 4th, 1999

Adam's POV

My birth mother's brothers and sisters were coming to visit my grandmother this weekend. Ollie, Bella, Gunnar and I had been recruited to help clean Grandma's house from top to bottom. Ollie was tackling the basement, Bella had the first floor and Gunnar, Grandma and I were dealing with the bedrooms upstairs. Gunnar had just taken a load of laundry to the basement for Ollie to get in the washing machine.

"Adam sweetheart there's something that has been bothering me about you," Grandma said.

I swallowed hard, before I said, "What is it?"

"There's something about the way that you act around Gunnar that you don't do when you're with your other friends," Grandma said.

Again, I swallowed hard, before I said, "How so?"

"Well, you always have your hands attached to his body and it seems that you want to kiss him, but whenever there is someone that steps in the room, you insistently break apart. Adam tell me the truth, do you like men instead of women as a romantic partner?" Grandma asked.

"I…. I….. I….. don't know what to say. Whatever gave you such a weird notion?" I asked.

"Adam it's called a grandmother's intuition," Grandma said.

"I knew I was going to have to come clean with you, but I just don't know how," I said.

"Adam be straight forward, no point in hiding something," Grandma said as she sat down on the bed that we were making in the spare bedroom.

"Ok I will be straight forward and not hide this anymore. Yes, Grandma I am gay. Gunnar and I have been together for almost 2 years now. I wasn't exactly sure until the last school year, when a girl had flirted with me while I was at the psychiatric hospital. But I can't stand the thought of kissing a girl.' Then I started to speak really fast, 'I know that you are all crazy for God and everything. But God and I aren't on the same page together. And I know that you are probably disappointed in me, and I am sorry, I am truly sorry. If you don't want anything to do with me, I will completely understand because I know that goes against everything that you believe," I said as I sat down next to her on the bed and started to cry.

"Adam, look at me," Grandma said.

I refused to look at her. "ADAM JONATHAN BOMBAY LOOK AT ME!" Grandma said in a raised voice.

I looked at her, "Adam you are my grandson. I love you for who you are. As much as I love your uncles, aunts and cousins. Am I happy with your choices, no. But I cannot control your choices, only God could do that one. I don't know whatever gave you the impression that I would disown you for being gay."

"The protests that I see on tv and in the movies sometimes, I guess," I said as I lowered my head again.

"Adam what are the two greatest commandments?" Grandma said.

"I don't know," I said.

" 'Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself' Matthew 22:37 through 39. Adam sweetheart Jesus asked us to be forgiving to others no matter how much that person has hurt us. Am I disappointed in your choices? Yes. But I am not going to disown you over something so trivial. I am going to love you as much as I love myself. I dislike the sin, but I love the sinner, because I know that I am not perfect there is only one person that is perfect and he died on a cross for my sins and your sins and Bella sins and Ollie sins and everyone sins in the world nearly 2,000 years ago," Grandma said.

I breathed a sigh of relief before I said, "Really Grandma?"

"Yes really,' Grandma said. 'Besides you are not the only person in this family that is gay, your uncle Ecclesiastes is gay."

"What?" I asked.

"Your uncle Ecclesiastes who lives in Vancouver with his partner for the last 10 years is gay," Grandma said.

"I don't believe this," I said.

"Yes, he came out to me a few years ago, when that comedian came out on her show," Grandma said.

"Comedian that came out on a show, you mean Ellen DeGeneres?" I asked.

"That would be the one, he showed up on my front porch and told me the day after she came out. We had a long talk, just like you and I are talking. And I promise you Adam I may not agree with your decisions that you have made. I may pray that God finds his way in your heart, but I am going to love you and support you just the way that Jesus supported me. Love the sinner hate the sin. But you could probably point out all of my sins," Grandma said.

"What sins? You're perfect," I said.

"Oh Adam, I am far from perfect," Grandma said.

"Thanks Grandma," I said.

"Sure sweetheart," Grandma said.

"Just out of curiosity how did you know about me and Gunnar?" I asked.

"I saw you two kissing in Tom Moreau's kitchen on New Year's Eve, that was what got my grandmother intuition going," Grandma said.

"Oh," I said.

Later that evening Gunnar and I were playing hockey in the driveway, "So I finally told Grandma, about us," I said.

"Vou did?" Gunnar asked.

"Yeah," I said.

"How did she take it?" Gunnar asked.

"Surprisingly well, I was shocked," I said.

"Vell vhat's good," Gunnar said.

"So, when am I going to talk to your mom and dad?" I asked.

"Soon," Gunnar said.

"Gunnar, I have been working on my Icelandic, I think that I have enough knowledge to be able to say hello to them," I said.

"No, vou don't. It's a complicated language," Gunnar said.

"Why is it that I am getting the feeling that they don't know you are gay?" I asked and then I shot a puck in the net.

"Vice shot. And my parent's know, they just have a vard time accepting it, soon vou will speak to them very soon," Gunnar said.

"I hope so Gunnar, because I can't keep waiting forever," I said.

"Vou need to vork on vour Íslensku," Gunnar said.

"Are they coming to graduation?" I asked.

"I don't know. Vhen is vhat again?" Gunnar said.

"May 14th," I said.

"I don't know, my father fly's all of the time for his vork but trying to get mamma in a plane is like pulling strings," Gunnar said.

"The phrase is pulling teeth, Gunnar. And how many times are they going to be able to see their oldest child graduate high school?" I asked.

Gunnar shot a puck on the goal before he said, "I don't know."

Paddy and Bella came up the driveway from their walk to get ice cream. "Hey Paddy, Hey Bella," I said.

"Hi Adam Hi Gunnar," Paddy and Bella said together.

"Paddy you have got to quit buying ice cream for Bella, she is going to get out of shape for the season, with all of the ice cream she has eaten this summer," I said.

"Oh, piss tosh. Bella is perfectly shaped," Paddy said.

"Yeah, besides the diet starts tomorrow," Bella said.

"And what about Sunday, when you get baptized because you know that there will be cake and ice cream at the social," I said.

"Adam, it will not kill me to have a small slice of cake and a scoop of ice cream. I swear you take the idea of a diet way too far," Bella said.

"I just want to be playing with you, this is our last year together. I want to be on the same line up with you and Charlie. Charlie has been working really hard lately," I said.

"Adam relax, I will be back into hockey shape by the first game of the year, besides Paddy and I had to celebrate our anniversary. Am I allowed to do that?" Bella asked.

"Of course, you are, I am just saying is all," I said.

"Then drop it Adam," Bella said, and she and Paddy went into the house. Gunnar held his arms around me and said, "I still love vou."

"I love you too," I said.

Charlie had been working out hard this summer. Gunnar and I would often meet Charlie at the gym to lift weights together. However sometimes Charlie would have to go somewhere in the middle of a set, I just assumed it was too the bathroom, because when you have to go you have to go. I never really thought of it being anything else.

A few days later I met all of my uncles, aunts and cousins. My uncle Nick and his wife Gertrude and their boys Tim and Tom. Tom had a wife Jerry and a little girl Sally who was about 3 years old. Tim has a fiancée Kate

Then came my Aunt Hadassah and Her Husband Dan and their children Daniel Jr, with his wife Vivian which she is 5 months pregnant. Sarah, Naomi, Shane and Carl. Carl was younger than Bella and I, since he was born in December of 1982.

Then came my Aunt Samantha and Her Husband Steven and their son, Jerome. He was the youngest of all of us, born in 1988.

Then there was my Uncle Ecclesiastes and his partner Billy from Vancouver

Then there was my Uncle Thaddeus who came from where he was serving the Lord in Nepal. I could tell he was grandma's favorite child.

"Hey Uncle Ecclesiastes," I said.

"Please, It's Les and this is my partner, Billy. You must be the infamous Adam I keep hearing about from mom," Les said as he put an arm around another man that looked to be about the same age as Uncle Les.

"Yes, Uncle Les. This is Gunnar he's my boyfriend," I said as I put my arm around Gunnar's shoulder.

"Good to meet you Gunnar," Uncle Les said as he shook Gunnar's hand, followed by Billy.

"Vikewise," Gunnar said.

"That's an unusual language, where are you from Gunnar?" Billy said.

"Ísland," Gunnar said.

"Iceland, very cool," Billy said.

"You will have to forgive Billy. He is an English Professor at the University of Vancouver," Uncle Les said.

"What do you do Uncle Les?" I asked.

"I am a Marketing Manager for a small advertising company in Vancouver. You remember the Budweiser dog commercial from the Superbowl?" Uncle Les asked.

"Yeah," Gunnar and I said together.

"My idea," Uncle Les said.

"Get out of here," Gunnar and I said together.

"Les is the best at what he does," Billy said.

Uncle Les and I really bounded during the family reunion, I was told that if I got a shot in the NHL and came to Vancouver to let him know, he could get tickets. He told me that he and Billy were going to have to study up on hockey this season.
