Thanks for reading me, and thanks to those who read my other stories.
This one is inspired by Orange is the new black's characters, current events in France, and in the United States, even if the plot comes out of my imagination. The fic takes place in an alternate universe.
Good reading, and please leave a comment.
Chapter 1
"Mom!"
She doesn't answer. Diana watches her pour water into a cup. Her face is a bit blurry because of the steam.
"Mom!" She repeats.
"What?"
Her mom puts the kettle down, turns to her.
"Is Mrs Morales disappeared?"
"No."
Her parents exchange a look.
"We have to explain to them, Blanca," Diana's dad whispers as if she and her sister weren't in the room.
"They will understand pretty quickly anyway," her mom replies in Spanish. Then, after long seconds, she explains:
"Mrs. Morales, she hasn't disappeared. She's ... she's ... gone."
"Where did she go?" Diana sighs. She wants to prove to her sister that she is wrong, that people don't go to prison because they drew on a poster. Flora puts her toast on the table, narrows her eyes.
"I already told you that she's in prison, the police took her away a week ago. If she doesn't come back, it's because she's in prison."
Her sister's voice is higher when she says these last words. Diana glares at her.
"Can I finish my breakfast in peace now?" Flora concludes, angry.
"It's enough, girls." Her dads calm voice surprises Diana. She feels like she forgot how to breathe, and can do it again. She wonders when it started. Maybe Sunday morning, just after this conversation in Spanish that she overheard, through the wall of her parents' room. It was on that day that their tone had change.
"Mrs. Morales is not in prison because she drew on this poster," her dad explains . Diana makes a face at her sister. "Her teacher isn't in prison, she knew that.
"She's in prison, because ..." Her dad hesitates. Her mom frowns, finish his sentence:
"It's because she doesn't have the right to stay in America. Some people need a paper to be there, and she doesn't have it," she adds.
The girls don't say anything. Neither of them asks who these people are and why they needs a piper to live in Litchfield. Diana gets up. She wants to put on her new yellow coat, watch the snow fall through out of her classroom window ... everything to avoid thinking about what her mother just said. Her half-full glass of orange juice remains there. She won't finish her breakfast this morning.
